Coming into Saturday, Syracuse had not started a season 3-0 since 1991. It will need to wait until next year to try and accomplish that feat.
SU lost to Maryland 34-20 in the Dome in front of a crowd over 40,000. Early on, the Orange was unable to get much going against the Terrapins, but Syracuse ended with 589 yards of total offense, compared to 369 for the Terrapins. The score was the only thing that mattered, though.
The turning point came when the Orange drove down the field late in the second quarter. Already down 24-13, Hunt completed a long pass to Jarrod West, putting SU in the red zone. ¬†On the next play Hunt threw his first interception of the season and it was returned 88-yards for a touchdown by Maryland’s William Likely.¬†After the Pick-6, the energy in the Dome deflated, leaving the crowd stunned.
On the ensuing drive, the Orange drove all the way down field, but was faced with a fourth and goal at the eight. SU attempted a 25-yard field goal with Ryan Horton, but missed wide left. Two red zone opportunities, zero points. Syracuse headed into the half trailing 31-13. Looking for the field goal was questioned by many SU fans. The game was over from there.
The SU defense did a good job in the second half, keeping the score at 31-13. But again the SU offense couldn’t finish drives, never getting closer than the Maryland 31-yard line in the second half until very late in the fourth quarter.
Scott Shafer preaches discipline, but post game said the most disappointing part were all the Orange penalties. SU did not follow its own formula of winning the turnover battle, winning the ground by 50 yards, and protecting in the kicking game. The Orange was inept in most of those departments, committing a pick-6 and a fumble, missing a field goal and allowing a blocked punt.
Was SU looking ahead? Maybe. Cornerback Julian Whigham said everyone is looking forward to the national stage in prime-time against Notre Dame. But SU isn’t good enough to look past any team, and admittedly did exactly that against Nova as well.
SU played a sloppy game, but Terrapins wide receiver Stefon Diggs really didn’t do much to hurt the Orange. Quarterback CJ Brown was relatively held in check on the ground. The Orange just couldn’t get anything going offensively, and when it did, could not finish off drives.
In light of the disappointing loss at home, two members of the Orange made program history on the ground. Hunt became the first SU quarterback to rush for more than 100 yards in a game since Donovan McNabb in 1997, and Prince-Tyson Gulley moved into 25th all time on the SU rushing list.
It’s back to the drawing board for Shafer’s Orange, because next weekend is no easier. SU takes on a ranked Irish team with the nation’s eyes on them.

Embarrassing day today at the dome!! Poor play from OL, DL, DBs and QB showed through the game. Plus poor coaching to!! Hunt will never be a great QB. He just does not have the mental game for it as well no touch on the ball. He lumbers when he runs. Its funny watching him. But the biggest minus is SU has no speed at all and has been that way for years. 6-6 might be over the top after this game. This is Maryland you know!!

I agree, this game was bad for the Cuse‚Ķbut how can you say Hunt lacks the mental game for it? He doesn’t call the plays‚Ķ.. His problems seems to be more physical, namely inaccuracy as a passer and a lack of touch‚Ķall his passes are hard and sometimes uncatchable. Hunt appears slow‚Ķ..but he is an effective runner. You can not deny that part of his game! With his physical limitations as a passer, he needs more play makers( players with speed and a knack of making people miss). Hunt missed a lot of open receivers today‚Ķ..there were also a lot of drops as well. Our defensive line can play better and defensive backs need to be better. Overall, considering all of the mistakes Cuse made, there were some good things in their performance. Our margin for error is slim. What concerns me most‚Ķ‚Ķis the lack of play makers on offense and defense!!!!

I hope Ron and I are right…play the freshman…play your options at QB… Get your 2015 class with a promise of playing time and use the freshman you play this year as the example….hope Shafer is around after 2015!
I’m not negative..I just watch the games and see a weak team loaded with mistakes and marginal talent. Coaches that aren’t coaching the kids up and predictable results.
I wish they could win them all but that isn’t in the cards.

I Know I have defended Hunt as a QB, and my response has consistently been the same‚Ķhe is the best of bad bunch! I know this is only his second year as a starter, but he has been in the program for 4 years. At this late stage, it is doubtful he will become the kind of passer we really need to be a great offensive team. His technique is bad, his accuracy is bad, and he may never get any better at the things he’s does poorly at this point. The problem is who do we have that is better? We need a QB‚Ķ..If I am I big time HS QB, I would give the Orange strong consideration‚Ķ‚Ķ

Hunt is not a good answer and while I know little about the kids on the bench…what the hell do we have to loose! We’re the second worst team in the ACC and will be lucky to win 5. Games..real lucky. Coach McD is marginal at best and unfortunately he has a few kids that can play…he just doesn’t know how to use them. To many mistakes…slow on both sides of the ball…I have no idea where your enthusiasm was coming from….
And the media hyping this team didn’t help…I’ve appreciated Seth’s articles of late..fact..not fiction!

I have no idea how many games this team will win, but I do think that the season is still young and they have a chance to get better and play better. QB is a concern for this team, but the best QB on the team is playing and that is a huge weakness for the program. Hunt is not the only problem for this team. It’s easy to be negative, I do not believe in hype and I can evaluate a team based on what I see, but I am going to continue to encourage the team and the program and hope they get better on the field and in the recruiting game!!..Go Cuse‚Ķ‚Ķ

Terry is right..a lumbering ..perfect word QB. Big and lumbering! There is no explosion and the passing skills are extremely limited. I’m not sure how everyone is so sure he’s the best QB on the team! We saw a half of Wilson. Not awful coming off the bench. We know what we’ll get will Hunt. Don’t really see any downside to giving the other QB’s some reps. Last quarter of Central Michigan would have been a good opportunity.
After week one and before the bye week Ron said Hunt would be watching from the bench….MCD should have listened.
Now it’s ND and the rest of the ACC.

Wow 598 total offensive yards and we lose the damn ball game. Look I’m done arguing the point on Terrel Hunt. I wasn’t one the those who bought the hype after the Central Michigan game. Because they put 40 on the board, I didn’t think they played that well . We had some in the media telling us that Terrel was an elite QB. WHAT A JOKE,A FRIGGING JOKE!!!!
Terrel failed to hit Brisley Estime 5-6 different times throwing to him in the flat and over the middle. Hunt run the ball 23 times in this game, now comes Notre Dame where he’s going to set himself up as a setting duck by running the ball at least 55 times for Syracuse to have a chance of winning the game. I think instead of practice all week long he gets on a tread mill and runs like hell as if his life depended on him getting faster. I’m concerned for Terrel. Notre Dame’s defense will destroy any thought of him going to the NFL where the men play the game. Last week I asked the question, with the game in hand,why the coaching staff didn’t put Austin Wilson in in the 4th quarter to get some game time experience? With Terrel struggling yesterday I thought Austin would have been thrown into the mix.
Some times in ones life you just have to swallow your pride and realize your wrong. I feel NOW is the time for Shafer and McDonald to swallow their’s. If they don’t make the switch at QB soon,like yesterday,then Syracuse won’t win another ball game for the rest of the year. If they fail to qualfy for a bowl game this year,changes in the coaching staff have to be made. George McDonald may be a great recruiter,but an offensive genius he’s not. Syracuse is in big time trouble gentlemen. Notre Dame will shut them down in next week’s game. I just hope that Terrel doesn’t get hurt in any way next week.
Here’s my question to all of you being negative after Su losses. Who is at fault? If you look at the game as a hole what cost Su the game the most, to me it was the kicking game. Norton missed a 25 yard field goal and the punt team had a punt blocked that led to a Maryland td. So if you had the 3 points from the missed field goal and subtract the punt that led to a td it’s a different game with that being said the score going into half would’ve been Maryland 24- Su 16 you have a different game. But here”s the other thing how can u bash on Offense that puts up almost 600 yds. Yes did Hunt miss some open Wr’s, did the Wr’s drop some catch able balls yes, that fault is on both we still needed speed on the Outside at the Wr postion for the deep threat. The last thing I will say is that Su beat their selfs yesterday costly penalties.

You make some legitable points,but let me add some of mine to what you saw in the game that I feel cost us the game.
Hunt running the ball 25 times in the game is not what our running ame should be. We have 5 backs on the team,why not use them like their suppose to be used? I agree that the recievers dropped a lot of ball that should have been caught,but Terrel Hunt couldn’t hit Brisley Estime over the middle at all. Brisley goes all of 5’7″ tall,Terrel was throwing way over his head and when needed couldn’t lead any of the receivers for them to catch the ball without breaking their stride.
Most of all on what I think was the most damaging aspect of the game yesterdaywas the red zone offense. When you drive the ball the lenght of the field and expect a TD and settle for a field goal because your QB can’t get the ball on a 3rd and 1 opportunity a first down and march into the endzone is what hurts. The damn play calling is atrocious and needs to be changed. The way I see it is a lack of leadership on the field and a lack of coaching from the side lines.
At one point in the game,when I looked at the stats on the scoreboard, Syracuse was the time of possesion,I believe it was something like 28:53 minutes to Marylands 13:20 and then I read that we had 589 total yards of offense for the game .

Yesterday absolutely was a frustrating game. But like Ron said, I would the Orange did put up nearly 600 yards of offense. The team was moving the ball fine between the 30s, but stalled in Maryland territory. With that said, I still think this is Hunt’s team. No reason to make a change there. He ran for almost 160 yards, threw for another 220, and ran for 2 TDs. Was he off on some throws, he absolutely was, but I feel like Maryland was more focused on taking away the pass after what he did last week through the air, and were open to giving him the run. I wouldn’t bench Hunt, he wasn’t the only one to stop moving when the Orange got into Maryland territory. He finally threw a nice deep ball to West, so that is in his arsenal now, too. As for how many times Hunt ran, I really don’t know why that is a problem. If he is taking off and gaining yards, which he did, it shouldn’t matter how many times he runs.
The wide receivers definitely dropped a couple catchable balls. I think a huge part of the game was when Ashton Broyld left the game. He has clearly become Hunt’s first option at receiver. He is also a quick receiver, much like Estime. The two of them look good as receivers, it looks like the coaching staff finally found a role for them.
Don’t forget, this is an offense that just put up almost 600 yards, ran for almost 340! It was a relatively successful day for the Orange, and usually when you have that kind of offensive day a team puts up more that 20 points. Next week they won’t put up 600 yards, but let’s see if the offense can move like it was for the most part against Maryland and Central Michigan.
Hunt will never be a Div 1 quality QB. And yes one reason(for Dr bill) he’s brainless on FB knowledge and does not have the touch either. I do not know what to do about the program right now. The coaching I like but are directing this team like a high school team. The “D” can’t stop my grandmother!! The “O” can’t finish any decent drive. So SU depends on its lumbering QB to win games with his slow feet. And throw stupid TD passes to the opposing team. He SUCKS-period!! Maryland is a decent average team. They made SU look like Liverpool high!! Wait to see what’s next. The coaching sucks too. That blocked punt was a poor coaches call also. Don’t blame the FG kick either that happens. Blame as always with no improvement at all lately for SU on poor coaching and below average talent too!! I said 6-6 at the beginning of the year(BORING). I was at the game and 6-6 is a pipe dream now!! DAMN IT!!!!
I think the game changing play came with the score 17-13 syracuse had the ball around mid field or so. If I remember correctly cuse had 3rd and 3 yards for 1st down. I believe the ball was handed off to PTG attempting to get 3 yds, defense stopped him and we punt. As I sat watching the game I asked myself why didn’t they spread defense out with spread formation and let Hunt run for 1st down much like Nova did against us?? Game changed from there as I believe terps score off that punt in middle of 2nd quarter.
I agree a lot with what Ron said about the game. Time of possession and total yards are usually stats that lead to victory when one team has a significant advantage ……except when the other teams scores quickly on long plays,the defense scores touchdowns, or turnover, leading to a short field, leads to scores.
All of these things happened to the Cuse. We lost because of those things! The offense clearly moved the ball…..but the name of the game is scoring…..and we did not score enough to win. Many of our problems are fixable! Hunt clearly needs to improve his accuracy. If Broyld is not hurt, you have a 6-4 slot guy going across the middle as opposed to the 5-7 Estime ..maybe those high passes to Estime are caught by the 6-4 Broyld…maybe….but Hunt needs to be able to hit a receiver in stride regardless of his height. Our wide out are not getting open often enough…We need better playmakers on offense regardless of who the QB is. All these new young guys…What are they doing? Custis is 6-5…I see him drop a pass, Ishmaeil, starting, how many catches does he have? Our running backs look good..we have great depth there. Amen-Moore looks good. We need some wide receivers to step up. I keep going back to when we had Mike Williams. You remember him….now plays for the Marrone in Buffalo. That guy was making plays all over the field…with no QB!!! They could not cover that guy….that is why he is in the NFL now. We need a receiver who can play like that!! Hunt would look a lot better with guys making plays around him. Those guys need to step up.
Our play calling is terrible. Our offensive coordinator has to figure out how to be productive with the players and the talent that he has. This team looks like it’s best chance to produce on offense involves a strong running game with a physical dominating offensive line(These guys need play hard nosed) and a short controlled passing games with some long shots down the field mixed in to keep the Defense off balance. Tight ends‚Ķ‚Ķ.we have a bunch of them‚Ķ..start using these guys in the middle of the field. We have 3 tight ends that are 6-5‚Ķ..can they play?‚Ķ.Can they catch??? The middle of the field is wide open.
That is what I see. We don’t yet have the players in place to have a wide open‚Ķdown the field passing attack. That starts with a QB?
Missed the game and had to follow it on gamecast(this will be my weekly routine for now). BUT, I am going to catch the replay on watch espn at some point this week. What I will be looking for in particular is Hunt’s play. Because I want to see if the opinions stated are just confirmation bias because its preordained that Hunt isn’t very good or if his play was really lackluster.
Hunt isn’t a really fast or elusive type runnner, but on the ground he has been able to get yards. Like Tebow, his passing leaves a lot to be desired. As a runner, I just want to see him hold the ball more securely because I can see a saavy defense forcing a fumble after one of those 15-20 yard runs. As a passer, he definitely needs more touch(oddly enough Nassib had the same criticism while being a much more polished qb ofcourse). Arm strength is sufficient. But I think he is a victim to the skill position talent and offensive scheme in some respects. Need some more explosive playmakers when you have a qb like Hunt cuz, he’s not going to be like a Brady or Peyton or a Brees where his timing and ball placement can help the wr.
I’m going to start watching the replay in a few minutes. Might not get through the whole game until later

Seth..You’ve been helpful in the last two weeks analysis…but while I appreciate your view..it’s educated..I’m with Terry/Ron..Hunt is no more an”elite” QB than I am! Unless you think the QB’s on the bench are beyond help..what do we have to loose! We get no where with Hunt… Might as well build for next year. It looks like that’s what Shafer is trying to do…needs these recruits..play freshman…he won’t..but dump MCD and his staff. We all knew..accept Dr. Bill…it was going to take time and effort to get competitive in the ACC!
We’re a 4 win team…all the hype and homer/optimism isn’t going to change that. Lots of offense ( Maryland’s defense was weak) and a sloppy/undisciplined performance. We lack talent and coaching! Other than that…things are good..right Dr Bill….
Cuse17‚Ķ..there are some really excellent college football teams out here that already have all the things you are looking for‚Ķ‚Ķ.Sounds like it is time for you to start rooting for one of those teams‚Ķ..because it is obvious you are not a Cuse Fan. I don’t know if you have ever played or coached sports‚Ķand if you had, I would not like being on any team with you‚Ķway too negative. I played sports all my life and coach girls varsity basketball. As a coach, I would love to have a roster of HS All Americans‚Ķbut as each season begins, and I don’t see that kind of talent on my roster, I guess we should just forfeit all the games? Coaches have to work with the talent they have until they get better talent. They have to coach up and encourage the players that they have‚Ķor else there is no point in suiting up. As a Fan of The Orange, I want to see my school do well. I know what there limitations and shortcomings are, but I root hard for their success none the less. The team is 2-1 with a bunch of tough games to come. It is the job of the coaching staff to figure out a way, with the current roster, to try to win each game that remains. My job as a fan and Alum, is to encourage them and support them each and every time out. Call me a “Homer” or whatever, but I am proud to wear Orange and always will be regardless of the coach or the players suiting up‚Ķ‚Ķ‚Ķ.That’s who I am Cuse 17, the question remains‚Ķwho are you?
Doc, I feel where you are coming from. I understand Hunt’s shortcomings and I’m not 100% sure what he is or can’t be as a qb. At the same time, I think Hunt can be an effective starter at qb. I can’t lie pre-season, I had hopes of him showing much more development and eventually turning himself into a borderline NFL prospect by the start of the Sr season. That doesn’t seem like a possibility at this point because he needs to really mature as a passer. His throws are not always crisp and he does miss receivers(which is not so odd for a developing qb). I think the talk of replacing him is way too premature too because Hunt’s running ability does help the team extend drives and move the ball..and at times finishes drives. The team as a whole is hamstrung by not having a really dynamic big play guy who erases qb mistakes and consistently beats coverage. I like Ashton Broyld and like Hunt, had hopes of him turning into a borderline pro prospect by years end. But Broyld, while athletic still doesn’t feel like a natural pass catcher yet. And his athleticism isn’t burn you down the field type great and I’m not sure how far along his route running is. Ideally a target like Broyld would be the kind of wr that could cover up Hunt’s lack of precision. Like a go up and get it type of wr. But again the coaching..mainly pass play calling seems like it won’t help the passing game. The runners are good(enhanced by a running qb).
btw: I saw an early drive(where Ben Lewis caught a nice pass…think PTG had a nice run on that drive too) and Hunt didn’t look so bad. I think Broyld and Ishmael had bad drops where Hunt put the ball right where it needed to be. The Ishmael one was really disheartening to me.
If I’m not too tired(taking a FSD course tonight) I’ll try to watch the entire game and give my honest feedback. But my general feeling is that there is an irrational rush to boot Hunt out when his play really isn’t so bad to suggest that he get pulled. I think its a grass is greener type of deal where the backup is everyone’s favorite a la NYC sports talk radio. I love Nassib, but you had a faction of fans who wanted Eli to get benched not considering how much of an adjustment time the offense needed and how piss poor the skill position guys had performed. Its only 1 game, but the offense looked much better against the Texans(based on the stat sheet..I want to see if I can watch that replay somehow too).

None of that has anything to do with believing Hunt is an “elite” QB. You can’t wish the team good. It is going to take time and like anything in life that leads to success…Hard work and honest self appraisal . Putting your head in the sand doesn’t help make things better.
As I continue to say…I want them to win them all! I hope before long they will. Tough as a private Institution..but doable.
Maybe believing your “elite” …and criticizing those that recognize your not …works in girls basketball.

He did sail some passes..mainly when throwing to the 5’9 Estime. A couple in the first half were thrown while under pressure). The one bad underthrown ball came on a play where the defender got flagged for getting Hunt’s facemask. But at the same time Hunt helped move the chains not only with his feet but with his arm as well. I don’t live in the IF world, but for the sake of argument, the Orange offense should not have gone into the half down 31-13. They botched some opportunities on drives where they were eating up yardage.
Random throws and Hunt notes as I watch the replay: Hunt had a nice throw on a slant to Broyld that netted 20+yards. He put the ball where Broyld could catch it on the run and pick up good yards.Bad overthrow on a 3rd down to Ben Lewis. Had he thrown it better Lewis might have gotten a first down. Threw a nice ball to a wide open West for 15 yds(but ofcourse it would be hard for any decent qb to miss that throw). Bad overthrow by Hunt in the 2nd Q while rolling out. Too high for Estime who if the ball was thrown better could have probably done damage with space to work. Followed that throw with another bad Overthrow on 3rd down. Devante McFarlane dropped a catchable(but not perfect) pass on a 2nd &6 and next play he threw behind Estime. Then the Riley Dixon blocked punt. Next series, Hunt hits Estime for 20(though the throw was still high) follow that up with the big pretty 51yd downfield completion to West(that debunks the prevailing preseason thought that Hunt doesn’t have a strong enough arm to go downfield). Then the killer pick 6 thrown by Hunt. Is that all on Hunt or just miscommunication between him and the wr? Either way it was a Momentum killer. But up until that point, I’d say Hunt was doing ok. He was helping the O move the ball with his legs and arms. The Next drive the Orange moved the ball with PTG’s legs but Hunt hit Estime on a roll out for about 20 putting the Orange into the redzone. A Hold nullified a would be TD run on that drive by Hunt. A hold called on what looked like a pretty pass and catch from Hunt to Ben Lewis that appeared to be a TD but wouldn’t have been because the left foot of Lewis landed out of bounds. Hunt hit an easy pass to PTG leading to that missed fg at the end of the half. I’d say Hunt played ok in that first half for the most part with some miscues but nothing that screams bench him. His abiliities helped the offense move the ball and if Foy hadn’t gotten flagged for the hold, the Orange go into the half down 31-20 instead of 31-13.
I’ll try to finish the game tomorrow but the first half wasn’t exactly horrible qb play. His completion numbers were not solely on him and the offense was moving the football.
As for Hunt being a lumbering qb, Thats fairly true. He’s not super graceful but It doesn’t mean he’s totally unathletic, He’s a big guy. Pretty decent spin move on one of his carries in the 1st q and a little juke move on another carry. He was a fairly good HS pg on a top level NYC Catholic HS squad at Christ the King so I guess he pulled that spin move from the hardwood. At any rate, He’s probably a good 35-40 lbs heavier than he was back then tho.
