CBS Sports released its preseason bowl projections yesterday and the Orange was nowhere to be found on the list.
What is even more surprising is that fellow Atlantic Division teams N.C. State and Boston College were picked to go to the Detroit Bowl and Bitcoin Bowl, respectively. The Wolfpack did not make a bowl game last year, while Arizona crushed Boston College in the Eagles’ 42-19 loss in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl. Meanwhile, the Orange won its 3rd bowl game in the past four seasons in the Texas Bowl.
Syracuse is no stranger to low expectations from the national spotlight. Bovada, an online gambling site, currently has the Orange at over/under 5.5 total wins for the upcoming season. Considering the team now has a guaranteed quarterback and is returning many of their starters from last year, it seems as if 5.5 games is setting the bar low. But as we have seen many times in the past, Syracuse thrives in the underdog role.
The Orange will not be in an underdog role to Scott Shafer, who still has his eyes on an eight-win season. Syracuse should have a better offense than in previous years. Terrel Hunt will get his shot to prove he can be the starting quarterback after having a quarterback competition with Drew Allen linger in the first half of last season. He will have a fair share of receiving threats in Ashton Broyld, Bristly Estime, Jarrod West, Adrian Flemming and more, any of whom have an opportunity to become Hunt’s favorite target. The ground game also should certainly help to contribute plenty first downs.
Predictions and preseason expectations will come to fruition when the team hits the gridiron in less than two weeks, but it is important to talk about if the Orange wants to take the next step into the spotlight of the college football world. Brent Axe wrote a piece yesterday about Syracuse’s disappearance from the AP Top 25 since 2001. It does make for an interesting conversation about when fans will believe SU football is “back,” as Axe puts it. Some believe that SU football is already back due to its bowl presence and bolstered recruiting. Others who have followed Orange football since the late 1990s know the program can still get better.
Low expectations from national publications and media have caused the Orange to play with a chip of its shoulders the past few years. Let’s see whether the trend will continue this season.

When was the last time you believed anything that CBS News or sports had to say about anything?
Friggin bunch of idiots at that place.
The first two paragraphs of this article give you an idea of how stupid the bowl games series can be…
Detroit Bowl
Bitcoin Bowl..are you kidding
Advocate V100 Bowl
Texas Bowl
Pinstrip Bowl
The only thing missing is the toilet bowl!
Let’s hope the day comes …soon ..where we are seriously considered for
A real Bowl game with national consequences…playing in these bowls means nothing and accomplishes little. Nice for the kids.. A few buck$ in teams pockets…it’s bullshit!
So is CBS Sports!
If SU would maybe think about scheduling a few lesser teams, then they wouldn’t have to struggle to get the 6-7 wins necessary. A few years of 8+ wins easily is probably better for the national perception than 6-7 against a tough schedule. Obviously, the best scenario is winning 8+ against a schedule like this year’s, but it wouldn’t hurt to go and beat up four weaker teams instead of two weak teams and then Maryland and Notre Dame. For example, let’s examine Mississippi’s schedule. They are in the SEC, so they get the tough games in conference, but they also have games lined up against Memphis, Louisiana-Lafayette, and Presbyterian, plus a harder one against Boise State.
Given that the schedule got stronger moving to the ACC, it wouldn’t hurt the program to schedule winnable games instead of aiming for a top ten most difficult schedule. That works when your program is rolling; it doesn’t work to build a program up.

I hope not! It isn’t about beating up on weak sisters… Sounds like Maroone….let’s play a quality schedule…and we are. Let’s take on the best and improve our program. Kids don’t choose schools that play bad teams to record wins.
I’ll use your example… Mississippi doesn’t get any better and the never will!
Back as in Top 25? Probably in two or three years. In the meantime, I foresee a gritty, tough football team that will play above their level of talent. I do believe they will make a bowl this year. As for scheduling “lesser” teams, I would rather see SU play strong teams during the season as opposed to scheduling cupcakes that will not draw attendance or viewership. SU v. LSU will draw eyeballs, even if it means an SU loss.
I’m not advocating a schedule of Presbyterian, Wagner, Villanova, and Tulane as the four out of conference games, but with the rotating schedule as it is now, you can envision a year where SU plays FSU, Clemson, Louisville, plus crossover games against Miami and VaTech. With a schedule like that, there is no reason not to play a couple of easier games, teams that fit in the 50-75 ranking, not extra bowl teams.
I disdain Ole Miss: superior recruiting, mediocre results, and they still draw talent. But they took a look at their SEC schedule, and decided to balance it out with creampuffs, and it hasn’t hurt them. SU could look to someone other than LSU when trying to break out of the 6-6/7-5 area. If/when SU does start hitting the 9-3/10-2 record, then go after the top teams. SU is not there yet, and could use “we went 9-3 and a bowl” season(s) instead of “we went 6-6 and a bowl”, along with the national perception that comes with it. To go 9-3 now requires them to play out of their minds, and beat at least two if not three teams no one expects them to. Which they *can* do. 7-1 against a group of maryland, notre dumb, duke, pitt, bc, nc state, wake, and louisville is not easy, but isn’t something that can’t be done. i just think taking an assumed 4-2 and having to go 5-1 against the same group, minus MD/UND, makes it easier to be a national player than taking an assumed 2-2 and needing 7 wins.
Kev
we’ll see
Hey guy’s I see that they have 6’5″ freshman Jamal Custis working out at tight end, could be used in red-zone situations.
This kid is the real deal if you know what I mean. After the football season is through, look for him to walk-on to the basketball team. I haven’t seen him play football yet but I know this kid is one hell of a basketball player. I wish him well. Good luck Jamal and thank you for choosing Syracuse University as your school of choice.

I can remember back when the fans stayed away from attending the games because they used the excuse we didn’t play anyone and wanted good teams to come to the dome. Well the fans got their wish,we’re playing the good teams now and now you want Syracuse to go back to playing the nobodies in order to have a winning season. I personally believe that your arguement is cyclical and your barking up the wrong tree with it. Syracuse is in a position of your damned if you do and damned if you don’t play the good teams. Syracuse University should stop trying to please everyone because it just can’t be done. I like the schedule they have now,the teams in the ACC and the likes of an LSU in 2015 is nothing to be ashamed about.
If I’m reading you correctly, just remember Villanove is a team that went to the DII playoffs for the last 2-3 years and won’t be a push over on the 29th. Central Michigan went to a bowl last year and their goal is to go to another one in 2014. We’re playing the #17 ranked Fighting Irish of ND and also playing a team from the BIG 10 conference in Maryland this year. I believe the 2014 non conference schedule is exactlty what your asking for and will be a lot tougher than what you might think.
I for one feel Syracuse should stay the course. LSU coming to the dome in 2015,can you imagine that?
Kev- Good teams dont want to play 10-2, 9-3 OOC games these days. They will pick a middle of the road team in a Power 5 conference, beat up on them and get the league name recognition on their schedule while playing what is an essential cupcake for them. Syracuse wont see games against USC, PSU, LSU and ND if they are consistently winning 9-10 games.
I think the scheduling needs to be a mixture of both, Keep an occasional regional “cupcake” on the schedule, but definitely keep some equal to slightly superior out of conference opponents. I would even like to see the Orange schedule some more out of conference matchups against teams that are close to the Orange’s status but in places that we don’t normally play.
as for the topic question: We will get “Back” when we are able to finish in the top 25 for atleast 2 back to back seasons. Then at the start of that third season, I would consider us back.
could not agree more with Kevmonstah’s comments above. Since the mid 1980’s Syracuse has had a top 30 strength of schedule year in year out. When you have the great teams and talents like Marvin Harrison, Freeny and McNabb – yes you can knock off a Michigan, Nebraska, Texas or Florida (like we did). But when you are struggling to build back a program and even get to the 6 or 7 win mark to make any bowl – it doesn’t behoove you to have the #8 strength of schedule in the country. Forget Mississippi (from above ) – take Ohio State. The Buckeyes play 1 ranked team all season (yes, said that right, go check espn – ONE ranked team). SU plays 3 top 20 teams alone. After the Buckeyes wax Navy and Kent State they really put their feet to the fire with games in conf. vs mighty Rutgers, Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota. not exactly tearing up the strength of schedule charts. Guess Urban Meyer wasn’t looking to test his team too much. But no one will criticize them for getting to 10 or 11 wins and getting into a BCS bowl. Our schedule is more difficult that half the teams in the vaunted SEC. makes a lot of sense . . . .
HedgeHog, I understand what you are saying, but on the recruiting side, OSU does attract a higher caliber of recruit and is known as being a pretty good football program so them winning 10 games with that schedule may not hurt them in terms of perception(until they get blown out by an SEC team lol). So we have to be careful when comparing schedules. There are SEC schools with SHAMEFUL out of conference games. I mean they should be embarrassed for playing some of the schools they play considering their talent gap. But, because they are the SEC and are loaded with NFL caliber talent, they still get the respect.
I want to see Cuse get to 9-10 wins, but I don’t think we’ll get respect if 3-4 of those wins are comprised of 2 FCS schools and 2 lower FBS caliber schools. Considering Cuse’s current status in football(viewed as an ok, decent program). Whereas some other schools can win 10 games and be seen as legit, us winning 10 with a weak schedule will be seen as fraudulent since we haven’t developed a rep as being a power. The only way to possibly win 10 with a lower regarded schedule and gain respect, is if we go out and beat a high caliber opponent in the bowl game.
Following up: Thats why I prefer to see Cuse play a fair challenging schedule compared to what their talent level is. I’d like to see them take on teams that are on their tier and/or slightly better in non conference. Then if you come out with a winning record, you get a little more of a boost.
