Terrel Hunt seemed surprised after he was ejected for punching Villanova linebacker Dillon Lucas, and he wasn’t the only one. Postgame, Scott Shafer talked about the incident as more of a competitive and fiery play than a mistake. He said three or four years ago it would not have been an issue. That may be true, but the reality is that Hunt punched an opponent. He needs to know that that’s not acceptable.
Earlier this week Hunt talked to the press about how he plans on being more of a team leader this year. It’s his redshirt junior season and he is the returning starting quarterback; he needs to be a leader. Last night proved that he is not yet ready to take on that responsibility, however. A team leader is smarter than that.
Looking at video of the play it’s understandable why Hunt would be upset. He was hit in the head in a defenseless position and had his helmet rolled up on his face. It was definitely painful. His reaction is still not warranted, though. Hits like that are part of football. Punches are not.
Luckily for Hunt and the Orange, SU still beat the Wildcats without its number one quarterback for a large chunk of the game. Any other game on the schedule is most likely a loss without Hunt under center. He is that important to this team. That is what makes the punch so shocking. He’s Syracuse’s go-to guy; the success of this team depends on him and he forgot that last night.
Shafer may not see Hunt’s punch as a major infraction, but that’s exactly what it is. Hopefully SU’s quarterback will learn from his mistake and bounce back in two weeks against Central Michigan. His team certainly needs him to.

The issue here is leadership. Hunt has been around long enough to get hit harder than that hit was. No excuse for that. Hell 10-27 wow great stats to, before he left!!
This game still shows the glaring unfortunate down turn of this program. Still playing with dougies left overs and average talent. Poor coaching too!! This team was not prepared at all. This is the 10th ranked FCS school out there. Yes their coach is better than ours and so is the QB, but the other part of the team was not. Every game on now SU plays DIV 1 talent. Good luck. Play better and have the coaches stop reading the press clippings so SU might get to .500 this year. Another average to below average year here at SU. Can’t wait for the homers excuses. SU almost had a JB(get beaten by a much lesser team) happen to them last night. ENOUGH ALREADY!!
DO NOT FORGET THE KIDS OF PSABUSEDU> THE NCAA DID!!
Hunt’s punch isn’t the story. The story is they looked bad and we’re very very lucky to get away with a win. Let’s not fool ourselves that we were ahead and coasting.. We were in a dod fight with a school from a small program that we should have dominated.
Hunt is no better than last year and any conversation to the contrary is bunk! The offensive line can’t move them in overtime?
I say..put Hunt on the bench and let’s move on….maybe the 2015 recruiting class didn’t see that performance. Maybe they realize they will play real early. That was awful!
My 6-6 is looking like 3-7.
Hunt wasn’t the issue!
Terry.. Your right. We were out played and out coached. Their kids put more energy into the game. They were actually better!
The overtime told it all. After 4 quarters of football our O-line couldn’t push 1 yard in three tries.
It was Villanova not Florida State.
It was embarrassing! We didn’t deserve to win……
Only good thing is Wilson?? Really. Were you watching same game the rest of us watched?? His first drive was great leading to TD, but after that his head must have gotten to big for his helmet. No question he has an arm and can throw it hard. But it doesn’t matter how hard you throw it if your WRs or RBs can’t catch it. It’s all about putting fine touch on ball so someone can catch it. I know it’s his first game, but guess what just like tonight you can be called upon in a blink of an eye.
Ditto Terry !
Looks like my decision to go to the fair last night instead of the SU debacle was the right one. Was drinking some milk and checking game updates in the dairy building and read that Hunt was ejected for punching another player. I cursed a bit, got a little pissed. Then went to the Villa for some fried dough. GO ORANGE!
Way to phone it in Stevie. Terry is at least talking about a game he actually saw.
Bad start. I hope the bye week gets some things straightened out. I have never been happier for a bye week.
For all of those Dr. Bills and Dans out there who thought that Terrel was a much improved player should rethink their decision. Before knocking Austin Wilson just remember that his stats were better than Terrel Hunts and looked a hell of a lot better than Hunt did against PS a year ago.
After the final game last year both Terry and I agreed and was telling everyone that Hunt wasn’t the QB and shouldn’t be the face of the program in 2014. I guess by going to Mannings QB Camp,Terrel Hunt didn’t ;earn a damn thing,did he?
I believe the media blows smoke up everyones asses by putting articles in the papers telling us that Hunt was a changed man and shouldn’t have problems leading this team.
during Fan Fest Terrel looked pretty damn good,but remembver he was throwing the ball against the 2nd and 3rd team defenses. Christ my 15 year old grandson would have looked just as good if he had a chance to do so.
Now onto my thoughts of the game lastnight.
a)I thought the game was going to be a dog fight and it was. Syracuse stole the game,Villanova should have won,they missed a 2 point conversion and 2 field goals during the game.
b)our defense looked pathetic. The LB’s looked lost and the secondary played like they belonged in Pop Warner.
c) I’m sorry fell’a but our offense didn’t look any better either. Where was Steve Ishmael,Jamal Custis,Ashton Broyld and Brisley Estime. Were they even in the game? Where was that vaunted rushing attack? Did George Morris 11,Devantae McFarland get into the game?
d)Let’s not take anything away from the Villanova QB. Preseason reports have him as the front runner to recieve the equalivant of the Heisman Trophy for Div. II and it showed us lastnight why. Our defense couldn’t contain him at all.
e)We were told all during spring practice that McDonald want ed to speed the game up. Well it didn’t look like to me he accomplished his goal. Did it to you? I think both Shafer and McDonald should gert their heads out of each others asses and start coaching these kids.
f) Terry I agree with everything that you’ve said about the team in you post,EVERYTHING!!!
In closing gentlemen I predicted a 9-3 for Syracuse this year and after lastnight I’m changing it to 3-9. I that I can say is, after watching that game,I had my heart ripped from my body again. That’s how frigging bad they looked.
In two weeks they travel to Central Michigan and if they don’t fix their mistakes by then will probably lose the game. Pathetic,Pathetic,Pathetic.
I hate to say this but Terrel’s ejection lastnight does not mean he’s done or is going to get demoated to second string. He will continue as the starting QB for Syracuse.
I could go on more about the game but I’ve taken up enough space. Pathetic,Pathetic,Pathetic.
we need to flush this game down the toilet and take the win as a courtesy from villanova. i only hope we play much better or all of us will be in for a rude awakeening. wilson did a nice job getting us through but other than that nothing really impressed me.
You guys need to branch out to other sites for pieces of information. I like the Fizz and know that they are a small shop outfit, but believing “facts” in their articles as being accurate is always haphazard. First of all, there is no way that you could have followed the game and thought Hunt was 10-27. Come on!!…for someone who clearly follows the team, use your head man! It was a typo. He was 10-17 and this site is rampant with typos, grammar mistakes and inaccurate info and analyses. Not trying to be a jerk and knock it, as I take it for what it is…a blog for entertainment and I obviously get enjoyment checking it out.
Yes, Morris and McFarland played. Morris didn’t do anything with his handful of carries…not sure if the mediocre O line was to blame.
This game was a perfect shit storm. I’m very disappointed that a great crowd showed up and the team pissed away the fan support. We lost 2 o line starters which clearly hurt our running game. Hunt infinitely provides a better chance for victory and sustained drives. The play calling is designed for someone like hunt, not Wilson. Hunt’s running is key to team success and if you want to throw away the season, go ahead and play Wilson. The real concern is the defense….run D and secondary play. That being said, great play from the QB position can mitigate major advantages for the other team. That gent played his butt off and made Nova into the better team through willpower and heart. This perfect shit storm all worked against us. We’ve seen this team crap down its pant leg over the last 5 years plenty and then come back and play decent. A mid-level talent team will be inconsistent. This is part of the growing process. The season is not lost without a bigger sample set guys. Think about Georgia tech last year…similar weird circumstances Hopefully yesterday will be a throw away game like that one was. We won, thankfully and I’m reserving judgment for the season until I see more. Coaching, effort, discipline and execution all need to improve…but I’m hopeful that this was a learning experience and not a prognostic game necessarily.
Also…we consistently struggle vs FCS teams…stony brook, road island, Colgate, Maine….all close games. Wagner is the only FCS blow out I can recall in recent history.
Sorry for the long post, as I’m usually just a reader of the site….but you all are just so sensationalistic….and Terry, you seem to revel in negativity. You claim to be a fan but your comments always show how much you love to see the team fail or perform below expectations. I agree with calling “homers” out for lack of objectivity….but a homer is a fan man and you honestly seem to get a hard on when bad things happen to Cuse.
I said it before…I wasn’t going to take much from this first game whether it was a blowout or not. I think the real indicator is when they face the meat of their schedule. This was a bad display all around and admittedly I can understand concern…but someone needs to do a study on eh mindset of a fan. Because I cannot think of anywhere else where people live and die which each individual moment. Imagine having a bad first day at school and totally writing off education after that. Or making mistakes at work but ultimately completing your task only to feel like quitting the job. It’s amazing. I don’t expect Pom poms cuz we def shoulda lost the game. But it was a narrow win. They have to pick up from here and do better. They got a bye to get their heads out of their asses and get ready for a tough pair..,maybe even trio of running backs and a dynamic college receiver on the road.
Btw it’s prob not the best indicator but part of me wishes Nova joined the big east prior to the big break down. I will forever have it in my head that the big east could have survived if it had gotten 12 teams and kept some natural geographic rivalries in play.
Hunt has gotta let the officials deal with the legality of hits..and not let his emotions take him out the game.
I do somewhat think that the Orange strolled in thinking that they were a much better team and that Nova was going to roll over…but as the cause fan said….they always seem to struggle v. These North east fcs squads.
Let’s be honest Ron, Wilson only had one good series leading to touchdown. What happened after that?? You and Terry seem to know it all and I wondering when your both going to apply for head coaching positions?? You both seem to be wasting your talents here on this web site. I’ll admit maybe Hunt not the guy to lead this team, I’m in holding mode right now. Wilson doesn’t have to quickness or legs to make plays if the original play falls apart.
Ron!
Im the guy who said Hunt would prove you wrong, ugh oh. He still has time.
You predicted the score exactly sir?
Cusefan75…what?
Did you read it before you posted it?
My advice..remain a reader of this site.
Dan;
I never said Dan that either Terry or I knows all about coaching a football team.
I will tell you though,Terry and I are diametrically opposed on a lot of topics,but I do know one thing, if ever given a chance both would come together as ONE and serve to bring a national championship to the program that we were coaching for.
Terry and I are both old school,don’t give a damn about political correctness and not afraid to tell you like it is.
And you can take that to the bank,my friend.
Dan;
your post say’s it all. Get a life will you please.
BK SU FB fan;
I think your right. Syracuse has and will probably always play to the level of their opponent. If I wewre a betting man,I would say that they all thought Villanova was going to bow to the orange on their home court.
Syracuse better watch out for Central Michigan. If they don’t they go 1-1 on this early season.
Matt;
Thanks for the compliment. All I’m doing here is telling you all what I feel and why I feel the way I do.
We have some great members here that know what they’re talking about.
Ron
Your a Monday morning Quarterback, you think you know so much about football, but in reality you probably never played. You spend endless hours on this site telling everyone what’s going to happen. I think it’s time for you to get a life, because quite frankly I don’t think you could wash the teams jockstraps. Your a has been and a never will be. Plain and simple
I know we lost and everyone is unhappy..but do we need all this stuff?
Everyone make nice….
Let’s talk football , the rest is not necessary!
Everybody gets to have an opinion…..
I for one enjoy Ron & Terry’s opinions and take them for what there worth…their just Cuse fans and love football!
That works for me!
Dan;
Really,I MEAN REALLY. Is your post the best you have to offer? Shows everyone again the level of your intelligence.
Take my advice young man,seek some professional help,you need it.
And I thought Malone would take home the “jerk” prize for his post stating that I should not be commenting on a game I did not watch, but listened to on the radio. Dan wins this prize for his blatant nastiness. Both Dan & Malone belongs over at the forums on Syracuse.com
StevieCuse;
When I responded to Dans comments I took into consideration it being a Sunday. I could have gotten real nasty with him and would have won the nasty award. I decided to practice what I’ve preached since joining the Fizz and stayed civil when getting/being critized. Cuse17 is right when saying we don’t need this stuff.
Terry and I have always stayed positive to one another. I will tell you over time, have had some real good debates with him and have always stayed civil to one another. We’re both honest individual OLD SCHOOL fans who aren’t afraid to tell it like it is. I don’t know about Terry,but I’ve stood my ground for the last 69 years and I’m not about to change for the likes of anyone called Dan.
I can’t believe Ron called me out! Really!!!! I never said Hunt was the answer‚Ķ.never. I was always optimistic that the Team would be better‚Ķ It is only the first game, but I was not impressed with Wilson. It takes more than a strong arm to play QB. Did you see his passes? Accuracy is very important ‚Ķand he couldn’t hit the side of a barn!‚Ķ I watched Alabama ‚Ķand Clemson play yesterday‚Ķtwo games‚Ķand not a single Bubble Screen!!!! Those Qb’s were slinging the ball down field‚Ķthe Clemson kid treaded a ball in a tight window against double coverage and he put it right in the bread basket for a touchdown!..we don’t have a QB on the roster who could make that throw‚Ķ.
It wasn’t so much of a call out on Terrel as it was on Austin.
Look you all know my feelings on Terrel as QB. I’m not trashing him on his personal life. Maybe all of our problems with the QB position goes away if and when Alin Edouard returns to the team.
Terrel has a years of experience behind him,the school has sent him to Peyton Mannings QB school where he recieved rave reviews from everyone.
With all of the experience gained over the last year,Terrel looked horrible. Couldn’t throw those damn bubble screen passes accurately. Only scrambled I believe once for a 15 yard gain. Completed 10-17 passes for 94 yds.with 0 TD’s.
Austin Wilson came in WITH NO GAME EXPERIENCE and completed 11-17 for 89 yds with 0 TD’s and no sacks.
I’m sure that the school didn’t send him to any camps over the summer. Look I agree with you when you notice other freshmen QB’s playing the game who are fantastic. Why can’t we get players like that? Why?
We’ll see in two weeks at Central Michigan if Terrel and the rest of the team corrects the problems they had in the Villanova game. I think Terrel hasn’t improved from last year at all and were all getting on board for another scary roller coaster ride this season.
Cuse17. Yes, I read it and just read the post again. It was long, which is not ideal but was perfectly cogent. Your posts are incredibly insightful and I think so highly of you that my entire weekend is now ruined because I was desperately seeking your affirmation.
My advice to you…fist yourself….oh wait, you’ve apparently got that covered. Carry on.
Personal life what does that have to do with Hunt losing is cool in heat of battle?? If I remember correctly two or three plays before Hunt was ejected he was hit late which drew personal foul penalty and 15 yards. I’m sure he was still pissed for being hit late and took his anger out on the linebacker. Again Ron I’ll say I’m not sure you watched the same game the rest of us did. Getting tossed out of game had NOTHING to do with Hunts personal life.
Wilson has had a full year last year with play book and this summer. It’s part of being the backup, could be called upon in blink of eye. No secrets to that it’s been talk for whole pre season camp
Sorry you think I’m a jerk Stevie. So now you’re telling me you listened to the game on the radio, while in your first post, the one I reacted to, you said you were tracking updates on your phone and READ that Terrill Hunt was ejected. All this so you could say you are GLAD you didn’t go because you probably wouldn’t have enjoyed it, but I’m the Syracuse.com jerk. OK. Guess I’ll see you there. I don’t love Terry’s brand of negativity, but at least I can respect it as coming from someone who watches and seems to care about the team and their performance. Yours is a whole different breed. You don’t even care enough to watch the team you’re bashing.
Too soon to chuck the season, but fair to lob criticism (if you watched that is). Not a lot went right it seemed, and it doesn’t make me feel great about the season. I hope this solidifies the team’s focus. Unfortunately, I think Shafer may need to do more steering of the D and get McD. some help designing and calling plays.
WOW!! Quite a # of posts here. That’s what SU fandom is about. I don’t see myself as negative as some of my site buddies think I am. Most of my sayings are objective to the facts. Hunt when he was kicked out for stupid play was playing below average= terrible. SU is in trouble this year. 6-6 is the best they can do this year. If not look for mass DE commits from their verbal’s. SU could not punch it in from the 2 yr line also. Lack of toughness shown there. Poor coaching showed there also. Yes NJ recruiting is better, but on field play was terrible!! Call this negative if you want, but its the facts too!!
DO NOT FORGET THE KIDS OF PSABUSEDU!! THE NCAA DID!!
Yes Terry, the coaching didn’t look like it was up to task Friday. The O-line was put together with gum and tape, and it looked it. I can understand how that would create concern about Joe Adam from people. That said, NJ recruiting is primarily Bobby Acosta. McDonald has his work cut out for him. I think he needs to fine tune his vision for the O and then figure out how to make that vision a reality with the players he has. Then he can recruit to that, and slowly add in the pieces he wants to add in both with personnel and plays. Right now, I am seeing the cart before the horse.
Terry as you well know ,you and I have had some good debates over the years. Some people consider your comments as being negative,that’s because they don’t understand the point that your trying to make. We have a lot of members that I enjoy debating with and your #1 on the list.
Just remember this,I will stand beside you and fight for your right to free speech guaranteed to all of us under the US Consitution. It’s just some people make comments that don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.
