Nobody said it would be pretty.
Despite the Orange defense being a sieve and its quarterback leader getting ejected from the game, the Orange somehow came out of Friday night with a win.  And just like that, the team is on its way into the 2014 season.
While there were plenty of negative takeaways, some players had impressive stat lines worth noting.  It is well known that the Orange will need increased production from its wide receiver group.  Despite not having any player catch more than five balls, Hunt and backup quarterback Austin Wilson hit eight different targets.  Freshman Steve Ishmael got on the board in his first game with two catches. Jarrod West led the team with 59 yards and Aston Broyld was close behind with 57.  Both West and Broyld need to step up in the event that Hunt is suspended.  
Last season, the Orange averaged 182 yards per game in the air and barely surpassed that on Friday with 184 yards.  Kendall Moore caught the one passing touchdown by way of a fake field goal that gave Syracuse the win in double overtime.
But, just like last year, the rushing and screen-pass game stole the show.  Aided by a 65-yard touchdown run, PTG led the team with 100 yards on 11 carries.  With 136 yards on the ground as a team, the rushing unit underperformed from last season’s 195 yards per game average.  It is worth noting that both George Morris II and Devante McFarlane were ineffective, totaling four yards on six carries combined.
Defensively, the team was rather average.  The unit allowed its first 100-yard rusher in over a year, when dual-threat quarterback John Robertson ran for 115 yards on 34 attempts.  The defense allowed 389 total yards, the most they have allowed in a win since November 2012 at Missouri.
Senior linebacker Cameron Lynch was a defensive standout for the Orange.  He registered 15 tackles and a sack.  NFL prospect Durell Eskridge had four tackles on the night.
Wilson was very mediocre in his debut.  The publicity that the backup QB battle gained over the summer suddenly mattered when Hunt went down.  Wilson went 11-of-17 for 89 yards.  Hunt was 10-of-17 for 94 yards before his ejection, which really derailed the offense.
The team will have two weeks to knock out the kinks before its road matchup with Central Michigan.  While Friday’seffort is certainly discouraging for fans, look for the next game to be a lot better on all sides of the ball.

On balance, I think the analysis is good – I do disagree somewhat that Austin Wilson was “very mediocre.” Terrell Hunt was less than very mediocre, considering the punch, and the fact that he came into the game the well-established starter. Considering the situation, and that it was Austin’s first game seeing the field, I thought he did a nice job. Room for improvement all the way around for the Orange. They’ll get it cleaned up, and I expect to see a MUCH sharper, MUCH more focused Orange team in two weeks at Central Michigan.
Hunt getting ejected derailed nothing…if he is the best we have at QB we are in for a long season! Might as well play Wilson..give him a year and hope that:
1. We get a new offensive coordinator
2. The 2015 recruits show up
3. We fire Gross.. Reminds me of the “bitch”
Didn’t realize Lynch had that many tackles.. Good job..he was the only one tackling.
Offensive line didn’t show up
Defensive backfield was a no show.. The kid could definitely play QB but they didn’t even challenge him!
Team looked unprepared..numbers verify!
Looks like 4-8..3-9.. Battling for the bottom of the ACC northern division!

Wilson did a fine job at QB for being thrown in there at a moments notice. And for the “Punch?” OK, Hunt should not have reacted – but that ejection call was total B.S.! Football is a violent sport and minor skirmishes are part of the game. This is what you get when the P.C. Police infest the great game of football.
Cuse17 – that’s a typical, negative Syracuse fan’s take on the state of the program after all of ONE game. Did you stop to think for a moment that Friday’s game was Villanova’s Super Bowl, and that just maybe the Orange overlooked them some – they’re kids, it happens. How on EARTH Daryl Gross has ANY part in your rant is ludicrous – the guy is primarily a fundraiser for the athletic department, and he’s doing a GREAT job of it. Facilities are greatly improved, with more to come.

Throw a 19 year old into his first game ever and look what happened. IMO he did a serviceable job. Good for him and lucky for SU. 5 tries to score within the 3 yard line and we get zilch? The OL is suspect. The running game gets a “C” grade at best. Passing game is mediocre. Robertson had his way all game with the SU secondary. Lots to work on.
I totally disagree on the Wilson kid‚Ķ..I understand it was his first game‚Ķ‚Ķ.but if you drop back to pass‚Ķ.and the defense doesn’t sack you‚Ķ.and you get a pass off, you should be able to hit your target. Some of his receivers were closely guarded‚Ķ.but he overthrew, and threw behind guys who were open. A “passer” can pass..period‚Ķin a game‚Ķin practice‚Ķ.time to throw and an open receiver‚Ķ..you got to deliver the ball. I have not seen a passer on the SU roster so far‚Ķ..and I wonder why we can’t recruit one! I see plenty of games and redshirt and true freshman playing big time D1 football‚Ķ‚Ķ
It’s just the first game. The coaches and players have lots of work to do. I think the team will be fine. We will continue our climb back to respectability. We will have a few surprise wins and losses. But I think this team is capable of getting a bowl eligible record. Nothing has changed with an ugly win of Villanova. Each game will have its own mountains to climb.

My sons and I thought that the Villanova players were playing dirty and Terrel was just reacting to it. I’ve seen the hit that Terrel Hunt took in the game and for me it seemed like a good clean hit and Terrel didn’t like it and reacted by throwing the punch.
The QB has to stay focused in the game,he has to stay calm and collected when dealing with a physical team that was controlling the game and playing them equally if he’s to be the leader of the team.
No one is talking about it,but if you were to flip the coin and look at Terrel’s actions,maybe just maybe he was sending a message to the team and to Villanova telling them all that Syracuse is his team and will defend the players at all cost even if it means getting ejected. He might have thrown that punch to send a message to his team mates to get fired up and play harder. Syracuse football is better,so lets show the fans just how good we really are.
Based on performance last season, I’ll chalk up the beyond disappointing running game to the fact that two starting guards were out and Lasker was forced to play out of position. I would guess that first game rust, jitters or overlooking an opponent may also play in. Losing Hunt, who greatly enhances the running game was damaging too. The offensive scheme is primarily Based on a running QB.
I just can’t see how the same very successful offensive line from last year, besides Macky, won’t put things together once Palmer and Robinson are back….and they watch the film and get pissed enough to make amends.
If I’m wrong and the Nova game isn’t a blip on the radar then it’s gonna be a loooong season.
Ron, I agree that Hunt has to remain composed. I’m sure he has been hit much harder than that on multiple occasions. My guess is that he thought the rake to the face mask was purposeful and that the hit came late. It can be really hard to tell exactly what happened when you’re on the field getting popped. That being said, he needs to walk away. Overall though, you see a player lose their emotions in just about every college and pro game out there. Pushing, shoving, jawing occurs in every game and some sort of penalty like Hunt’s probably in 25%. The problem is he should know better and plays a low emotion position where you have to maintain balance. I guess I’m just saying that I don’t condone the action but this stuff happens a lot more than people are intimating here. Having played…I can attest that a punch in some capacity is being thrown almost every game….you just can’t be dumb enough as a QB to get involved.

I couldn’t agree more with both of your post. In todays paper Terrel made the statement that,that type of action would never happen again. He has to understand by being the QB the opposing defenses have painted a target on your back. He has to stay calm and in control.
I’ve also read that according to the NCAA rule book section 6.1 the ACC has a right to enforce more penalites againt Terrel for his actions if they want to..
Not justifying Hunts actions..as youmay have read in the other topic threads. But i dont thibk he reacted to the harshness of the hit..I think he felt the hit was dirty. You will notice he punched the second defender not the main guy making the tackle. I thibk he felt that second.defender hit him from behind as he was going down in a defenseless position. Wasnt a hard hit obviously and Hunts has gotta let the refs handle that. I think the offense wouldbhave clicked.a.lil more if hunt didnt take himself out the game. Wilson isnt as athletic as Hunt and there was probably a bunch of stuff they couldnt run without Hunt. I said it in the redzobe topic a week back that Hunts runnibg ability would be a redzone asset. For the record, I thought Ron Thompson played very well and almost got home is several occasions, often flushing the Nova QB (a 2* NJ kid for those who were wondering). Problem was nobody was there to clean up/contain.
