With all things looking up in the world of Orange, one first-year player has decided to transfer before ever stepping on the field in a game for Syracuse.  He announced his decision in the middle of last week, and although the team will be fine without the wideout, his presence would have helped the offense.
Corey Cooper was originally a member of the 2013 recruiting class, but was reclassified to 2014 because of academic issues.  Finally given a chance to step on the field, he was buried on the depth chart behind numerous players.  At the start of training camp, the Orange had 17 receivers on the roster.
Cooper was likely to redshirt in his freshman season, according to George McDonald.  Instead of this, the receiver decided a transfer was a better option.  Syracuse will block his transfer to all other ACC schools.
Looking at the depth chart, Cooper would not have made an impact in the coming year.¬† However,¬†top recruit KJ Williams was deemed academically ineligible¬†and 3-star Adly Enoicy went down with a lower-body injury.¬† Fans can exhale, however, because Enoicy is due back in just a couple weeks. ¬†He could play in the team‚Äôs opener against Villanova.¬† The freshman wide receivers include Enoicy, Steve Ishmael and Jamal Custis, as well as a handful of players classified as ‚Äúathletes.”
Custis will be very important in the offense down the road, as his 6’5” frame could potentially be a hybrid of wide receiver and tight end.  He worked out with the tight ends while at Fort Drum last week.  Ishmael, on the other hand, is fighting for playing time in a group of receivers who underperformed last season.
How important is having a dependable receiving core?  In 2012, Alec Lemon had over 1,000 yards receiving yards and Marcus Sales came close to that number.  However, last season, Ashton Broyld led the way with only 452 yards receiving.  Jarrod West had only 397 receiving yards, the second-highest total of the season.
The Orange’s ground game took a big hit when Jerome Smith graduated.  The trio of Prince Tyson-Gulley, George Morris and Devante McFarlane can certainly help fill those big shoes, but it’s time for the Orange’s receiving core to step up and help junior Terrel Hunt.
Cooper’s decision to transfer will not hurt the Orange this year as much as it will down the road, but the team is equipped with plenty of players to combat that.  Enoicy’s approaching return is a huge part of that, as is Broyld’s development.  Fans can get their first glimpse at the improved receiving group in the Orange’s first game in two weeks.

Syracuse had too many receivers on the roster! Corey Cooper was one of the higher rated recruits from a state SU would like to have a bigger presence in, North Carolina. Having said that, I don’t think his loss will hurt us. He had not demonstrated that he would be a factor this year and with his transfer, we can recruit a wide receiver in this class or look for an additional receiver in the following class. We can also bring Corey Wingfield back to the offensive side of the ball. Go Cuse‚Ķ‚Ķ.
This is all going to happen. To get kids I’m sure their talking playing time… When it doesn’t come the kids have grand ideas about their talent level and want to jump.
With better and better recruiting classes..expect more academic problems and more transfers. It’s all part of the NCAA mess. College football/ basketball at these levels isn’t sport…it’s business!
Depth at WR and RB would seem to be an issue. Hope the depth holds up?

I thought Corey Cooper would come in and contrubute as a freshman right away. Syracuse has 17 WR’s listed on it’s roster. I didn’t know that and should have looked at it a little harder.
I’ve read articles saying the reason for his transfer is that he’s homesick and wants to be closer to his family,and that could very well be,but I feel that he saw a lack of playing time and was going to get redshirted and that too probably played into him transferring.
I thought Corey Cooper was going to be a special player at Syracuse, I wish him all the luck in the world at whatever it is he decides to do.
i feel coreys decision came due to being homesick, however i feel we have enough wide receivers for now. i due wish corey the best though. i would say that ben lewis has caught my eye at fan fest as he is picking up his a game which is promising so is sean avant.. i feel very comfortable at wide receiver. with corey winfield i’d still keep him at corner for now but who knows..

I think he was homesick and while he won’t have the ACC NC schools to choose from, I hope he gives an HBCU down in the VA-NC area some consideration, in addition to a program like an ECU.
But to stay with the theme, I don’t think it immediately nor long term hurts the Orange. It would be nice to have him produce and open up pathways in the midatlantic/south. But you can always try to target other kids in the region. They have a ton of wr with his classmenship/eligibility. So I think the Orange will be fine there. I honetly believe that in 2-3 yrs, that will be a position of strength.

The answer to your question is yes only in practice and in scrimmages. if you were at the spring football scrimmage you would have known that. Wilson and Kimble have my votes. Let’s wait and see what happens during the season. Like I said in an earlier post,if those two don’t get playing time this year I believe that both will transfer out at the end of the season.

Your right,with a years experience behind him Hunt should be,”SHOULD BE” miles ahead of the other two,but please do me a favor look at the mechanics of throwing the ball. Does he move his feet correwctly? does he have a quick release? Can he throw a deep ball down field? Are all of those screen/bubble passes aa that he knows how to throw?
Let’s see how Hunt does when he goes against an opponents defense. Should be interesting to say the least.

If i’m wrong about Terrel Hunt at QB. I will give the kid an apology to his face and tell him what a fool I was to judge him at such an early age. I’ve seen Terrel away from the football field interacting with other members of the team. I believe that Terrel is a leader of men and I’m really hoping that he has a great year. If i’m wrong,i’m not above apologizing to some one and telling them I made a mistake.
I am concerned with our ability to pass the all down field. With Hunt last year, in his defense, the receivers were really bad…..but he deep ball was bad.
We need a QB that can get the ball down field combined with receivers that can get open down field and make plays. who remembers Mike williams‚Ķ.before Doug kicked him off the team‚Ķor he quit the team, can’t remember what the deal was‚Ķ.but that guy was slicing through defenses‚Ķ..they could not cover him‚Ķ.and our QB play was not very good(Greg Paulus). We need a guy like him on the outside‚Ķ‚ĶIs a guy like Marvin Harrison or Rob Moore too much to ask for?
after 2014 and then 2015 we have 5-6 WR on the roster. McDonald and Shafer/CO. need to find a quality WR immediately.
