Defensive tackle Anthony Giudice first became interested in Syracuse after attending an invite-only camp for recruits after his sophomore year of high school. He then visited SU, which was enough to earn his commitment. He might be under-the-radar for some scouting services, but he makes up for that with his well-recognized motor. Giudice is one of 19 commits in Syracuse’s 2015 class. He went one-on-one with The Fizz to discuss his favorite coaches, a transfer of high schools and getting motivation from being unrated.

On the coaches that lead to his commitment:
“Coach Bullough and Coach Daoust are great guys. Coach Bullough was the one who recruited me so we have a very good relationship. He’s a great guy, real intense. I’m fired up to be part of this program.”
On how the coaches sold the program to him:
“Last year I went to a camp and I worked with Coach Daoust. Like Coach Bullough he’s a real intense guy. After they offered me I knew I liked them and I wanted to visit the school to see the academics because that’s really important to me. After the visit, I went to the business school. Great people and great school.”
On talking with other commits:
“We all talk on Facebook. There is a group message that we have, but nothing really specifically.”
On transferring from Monroe Township (NJ) to Avon Old Farms (CT):
“It was a much better opportunity. There are great coaches [at Avon]. It’s just a great place.”
On his goals for the upcoming season: 
“To go out there and ball out, do my thing. Work hard, my motor is my biggest thing, motor every play.”
On the motivation from scouting services not rating him: 
“I know the way I play. I might not be the biggest guy, on the field, but that was definitely motivation for me.”
On possibly redshirting his freshman season:
“I would like to redshirt my freshman year because I would like to get my MBA. I would love to play obviously as soon as I get in, but I know I would have to work to get big. I want to come in freshman year around 275 [pounds]. We’ll see where it takes me.”
Scott Shafer wants an aggressive defense, so a player with Giudice’s tenacity is a great fit. Keep an eye on him this upcoming season, as the high school standout will try to build off his stellar junior season. You have to love any player who uses that chip on his shoulder to push his play, and doesn’t let it affect his confidence in a negative way. If his motor is any indication, Giudice won’t let up a bit.

“Under the radar” also described recent past player who was a star at SU and will now be playing in the NF this coming season. Jay Bromley wasn’t even given an offer until Marrone saw him in an all-star game. He quickly accessed the offer and the rest is history. The radar doesn’t catch everything as its original and military use will attest.

I could be crazy, but I think I see a contrast between the 2 Dtackles from last year’s class and Cross/Giudice.
The guys from last year are about 6’1″ and close to 300 lbs. I get the impression they are there to plug up the middle and stop the inside run game. This year’s class they seem maybe a bit lighter/more athletic..get off blocks and pursue and maybe pressure the QB more.

During his second visit to Syracuse University,I’m wondering if coach Shafer teamed Defensive tackle Anthony Giudice with Jason Bromley? Similarities between the two can’t be ignored. Both players come to Syracuse as N/R recruits that were overlooked by all of the websites. Jason came to Syracuse as a 245 lb defensive end and gained 60 lbs of muscle and moved to the defensive line as a tackle. Anthony is coming in already at 275 lbs and by the time he arrives will probably be around 295 lbs and will play DT for Syracuse. I’m expecting him to gain some weight/muscle and graduate weighing approximately 315 lbs,making him a force to be dealt with in the NFL.
The most important thing about both of these young men is one has already graduated and the other wants to get a MBA from Syracuse University. Seems to me that these two young men should/would be great Ambassador’s for the university and ROLL MODELS for kids just starting out in Pop Warner playing the game of football

Grimes from same school as Gerald “Bubba” Robinson and he is being talked about as one of the next great South Florida LBs. Don’t think anyone’s fibbing. Look what happened to Devonte Davis. We offered and next you know he’s decommitted and we’re not in his top 5. I think we need to keep some gems quiet. Robert Washington isn’t coming here, but we may be happier with an unheralded RB with something to prove.

A couple of years ago, we couldn’t get any kids interested in Syracuse‚Ķforget thinking about 4 and 5 star kids. There was very little interest in the Cuse. Now, we are getting kids excited about coming to the Cuse. Some of these NR kids, most of them have size..or speed‚Ķor a skill set that should translate to productive major conference players. I remember when we were competing with the MAC for players and losing out!! We were recruiting undersized players with no speed. Our recruiting is on the rise.
We should all be rejoicing in that!!
With the class of 2015 filling up faster than a bolt of lightening,I can see the coaching staff making some major decisions down the road. We’ve received a ton of commits from a lot of N/R players,making the class of 2015 unique to say the least.
We have 3 open spots left to fill for 2015 and a ton of recruits from the NJ,Florida,NYC and Illinois area’s that still might be interested in coming to Syracuse. What’s going to happen if 9 maybe 10 more players want to commit to the Cuse. Keep in mind fella’s were only in July.
It’s hard to say if we’ve hit the mother load panning for and finding a couple of small gold nuggets or stumbling onto a huge deposit of diamonds. I guess we’re all going to have to wait and see which developes with this class.
I guess “Dr. bill” was right in saying that recruits are interested in the Cuse again. Shafer has to be one hell of a salesman,I hope he keeps on doing whatever it is that he’s doing to get these kids coming to Syracuse.
Here is some thinking I have heard on the numbers/room at the inn. We have a lit of depth at some positions and may lose some guys to transfer. We may take some guys off scholarship. And then there’s this… Get ready Terry… We already know that some of our targets/commits are not academically qualified. Call it insurance for what you are so angry about with Williams. We take 29 and let 4 go prep or JuCo? Maybe. We classify early enrollment guys to the ’14 class what with two new openings? Don’t know the rules that well, but if possible I have to believe that will happen. Interesting strategies. Possible hurt feelings. May be a dangerous game.
Yes the classes are better!! And the quality has inched upward. But its still gambling on SU programs future. My one concern for just interest sake is why all the interest from quality players(this spring) yet “NO” quality plays biting at SU’s bait??? That smells?? Why do it?? That’s not leadership!! SU’s verbal list has maybe one of those prized apples on it. So why even talk about it. Is it media inspired for a look see or staff inspired for what ever reason. If SU has no chance at a player stop the ham boning and look else where its a childish move!!
Let us not forget that there is still the perception out there that Su Football still is not “BIG TIME” Football‚Ķ.so, many of these kids are waiting for better offers. That is why the staff is offering and accepting commits from these NR kids who they feel can play!!!
With winning comes recruiting success. There will come a time, when more of the solid 3 star and some 4 stars will view the Cuse as the go to location‚Ķ..Enjoy the ride guys‚Ķ‚ĶI think we can say the future looks brighter than it has been in the last 10 years…
Instead of wasting time courting 4* players we have little chance of signing, the SU staff is focusing on their niche player with upside and are doing very well.
Our recruits are similar to those who verbaled so far to Pitt, BC, MD, Rutgers, Cincy, NC State, Virginia. VaTech and MD have one 4*. NC and West Va are doing better with four or five 4*. VA signed 2 5* last year which is not the norm. Look at a UCF team that has 2* and 3* players every year. George OLeary coaches these kids up and they are a hard team to beat. It doesn’t hurt when one of them was Blake Bortles. I did leave out Louisville but I think they are having a comparable recruiting year. Petrino will coach them up. These teams from different conferences are similar to SU with regard to playing on the same level and having close games with all of these “2nd tier” teams. SU is not top tier. SU is getting closer to a season when we have a McNabb on one side of the ball and a Freeney on the other side (both 3* recruits) and we can go into the big house and dominate a Tom Brady Michigan team in front of 110,000 fans. Or, blanking Wisconsin in the Meadowlands pre-McNabb/Freeney. That’s what keeps me interested in SU Football. This wasn’t happening in P’s later years and certainly not with GRob. Marrone got SU beathing again and I do see a good future under Schafer.
Take a look at the offer list for OT Denzel Ward from the last cycle of 2014: Look at the schools that offered this kid and he chose the Cuse‚Ķ… Ohio State, Florida, Nebraska..and he chose the Cuse. You can’t tell me that our recruiting is not getting better!!!
Dr Bill,I see you have a good understanding of recruiting. We can forget 5* guys except in the rarest of circumstances(as can most non-FB factories) but with 1 or 2 4’s and solid 3’s as the bulk going forward great things are possible and for the first time in yrs I’m satisfied with our recruiting(for now)..the thing now is keeping the trending upwards in FB with W’s,bowling and HCSS satified financially here in this day of HC musical chairs!!I have a hunch more fans will show this yr with a decent start though QB is my worry as much as TH improved!!
