With Sterling Hofrichter’s commitment yesterday the Orange will vastly improve its kicking game. According to Kohlskicking.com, Hofrichter is the sixth-best kicker in the 2015 class, and the 13th-rated punter.
Last season Syracuse missed four extra points and six field goals. The Orange started last year expecting Ross Krautman to kick but he went down with a hip injury and missed the majority of the season. Ryan Norton then emerged as the Orange’s kicker and was having a fairly solid season until he got suspended for underage drinking and had to miss SU’s game against Wake Forest. Norton was suspended again a few months ago for violating team rules and missed the spring game. Senior Alex Hodgkinson took over the kicking duties in Norton’s absence.
Hofrichter’s commitment means there will no longer be a kicker carousel in the Carrier Dome. Hofrichter should be the starter from day one.
Last December Scott Shafer watched Hofrichter kick a 55-yard field goal and was instantly sold. It really is hard not to be. Many kickers come in as preferred walk-ons and have to earn their scholarships but Shafer was so impressed he offered Hofrichter one on the spot.
Hofrichter can also punt and may take over both the kicking and punting jobs for the Orange in the future. In an interview with Syracuse.com he said, “From what it sounds like they want me to do both.” His scholarship offer makes even more sense if he ends up playing both positions. SU would be paying for two positions for the price of one.
Hofrichter is the 16th Orange commit for 2015 and will fill a clear need. His commitment caps a remarkable month for Syracuse recruiting: eight players committed this month alone. The class of 2015 is certainly shaping up nicely.

In its much better days(before mid Coach P) SU usually had a decent FG kicker!! History has shown the Dome a perfect place to FG kick so talent was easier to find. This player is definitely a quality FGK I hope!! SU is making strides. Except I don’t believe the staff didn’t know about the grade issues of the two players just non-qualified. If that surprised them then what quality are they in today mecca media world of facts. GEZZ!! The staff gambled and lost. Now they have two slots empty and one player was their best get. This hurts the program in talent and depth. They could have 2 players qualify in their spots. STUPID!! You can not build a program with an empty bench. Get real!! Don’t gamble any more. This shows it can really hurt a program!!
Fredricks looks good, but what is his 40??? But remember this he had to convince his parents into coming to SU so he might be a soft verbal too!! Look out on this one!!
Scout 46 and Rivals 39 so SU is moving up the charts. Scout is pretty on and rivals I have my doubts on!! But here I agree with Ron on this issue!! I don’t believe all the talent thing when it comes to team rankings. There are decent players and almost the same hope and prays on SU’s list. But any way its better than the last few years. Shocked are you!!

Underage drinking. A kid in college drinks probably inhales a substance that is still considered a moral lapse in some parts of the country. There must be some room available in Attica.

I agree with you and disagree at the same time. I am with you that It is very unlikely that they did not know that these two might have difficulty qualifying. I do not believe that they can talk about academic issues due to privacy laws, so not unusual for them not to announce that.
Where I disagree is on taking the risk. We have not arrived as a program where we can not take risks on kids. If we don’t recruit them and back off because of grades, we never get these kids. Now, these kids could both go to prep school and still choose the Cuse because we stuck with them and showed them some love. If they are smart, they will choose the prep school route over the JC route.

Let’s get real here and face the facts. If either of the two recruits who failed the academic qualifying standards were to enroll at any of the southern universities there wouldn’t have been any problems with those two qualifying at all.
Take a real good hard look at what’s going on at UNC. Does anyone out there actually believe that KJ Williams and Treevon Prater are the only two players that didn’t make it? Comeon people!!!!!
Over the last week,it looks like progress has been made on the IPF. Ground work continues and it looks like to me that they have all of that 5′ and 4′ diameter piping buried in the ground taking care of the drainage problems.
Took a look this morning at the national class rankings
scout.com jumped Syracuse eleven spots to the 46th spot,rivals.com jumped Syracuse five spots to the 39th spot and 247sports jumped Syracuse two spots to the 29th spot. When averaged out Syracuse is currently setting at the 38th spot in the rankings. If this trend continues I see Syracuse breaking into one of the top 20 classes(if not this year)maybe over the next couple of years.
Current ranking is a hell-of-alot better than what Syracuse was over the last couple of years setting anywhere from 62-75.

I have been saying this since Shafer took over as head coach. This staff took a bunch of heat when they started before they even had a chance. On short notice, I thought they did a great job with that first class. This years’s class(2014) was better than it had been in years. The 2015 class is off to a great start. What excites me is that kids now seemed interested in the Cuse. I love the recruiting foot print they are establishing with Florida, Illinois, Ohio, Georgia‚Ķgetting back into New Jersey!!! The numbers you just posted, suggest that others agree‚Ķ.The Cuse Recruiting is on the rise…
I think finishing in the top 45 would be a good goal. Our class is mostly full and we have to hope that the last 7-10 recruits are highly ranked for that to happen, or that evaluations or re-evaluations of current commits trend upward. Our class volume numbers wise has us ranked high currently, but some traditional powers that have fewer recruits will likely pass us as we reach next february.
What is nice is that the staff has proven to have a good eye for talent and appears to be getting kids they really like and want. If you believe in their ability to evaluate talent, especially underlooked north east kids from conn and mass, then you should feel pretty good about our status regardless of how the rankings finish up.
Just got a commitment from D. Kelley, a 3 star highly recruited safety from Jersey. The Bobby Acousta hiring is paying off already….We are back in Jersey!!!!..that is huge for us going forward. Kudos to coach Shafer for adding a guy with Jersey connections to the staff!!!
Our class is filling up‚Ķ‚Ķ..Recruits better think quick…..before there is no more room on the bus‚Ķ.

Thanks for the comments,I was going to tell everyone that we received our 18 commitment today by getting 3* 6’3″ 210 lb (S) Daiquan Kelly to give us hia verbal.
I’m as happy and a homie as all get out,and your right,things are changing here at Syracuse.
I’m going to make a couple statements about this commitment and I know one of them will probably get some people upset.
If I were Devantae Davis I’d be a little worried right now. Looking at what Syracuse has recruited as safeties,there just might not be any room for him if he changes his mind and decides that he want’s to come back to the orangemen.
Knute Rockne had his Four Horsemen. When Dontae Strickland commited to the orangemen he said that he hoped his three friends would join him here. Well fella’s we have two of the four players out of NJ committing to the Orangemen.
Will we end up with all four of those players and should we get ready to call these players “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”?

I can’t remember when Syracuse ever had 20 recruits before the end of June. A month ago everyone was nervous as all get out because we weren’t getting any recruits. Isn’t it funny on how fast things can change? I have a funny feeling Terry that more good things are going to happen here recruiting and I strongly believe that Coach Shafer is going to have to make some decisions as to who he wants on the team. Remember now we have three openings on the 2014 team. Will he do what Malone did and clean house and make room for some of those recruits that going to commit to us after their high school season ias through?
I guess we’re going to have to wait for the answer to that question,aren’t we?

I know that some disparaging remarks were made when Coach Shafer hired Coach Bobby Acosta away from his DIV III job at Widener University. It kind of looks to me any ways that Shafer is showing all of us his genius.
Hiring Bobby Acosta was probably better for Syracuse than Texas hiring Charlie Strong as their head coach. He’s opened up,(NO)he’s barged through broken down the gates that have been locked for so long to the State of New Jersey.
Dr. Gross better give this guy some of that $23 million that we got for the ACC payout. Wouldn’t you agree?
Two things!! Dr Bill HCSS and staff knew about the grade situation no doubt!! Its just about how bad was the situation. In todays world nothing is quiet!! The staff HAD to know pretty close to exactly what was going on and failed the program by letting it go by. The righteous thing to do is at least get some depth some where in the program and HCSS and staff lost two spots not much but depth has always been an serious issue at SU. This has been happening to regular lately. HCSS needs to learn from there mistakes!!
Ron I must confess like I always do but few OTHERS here can’t spell confess that I might be wrong about Acosta! He can recruit(so far) will see if true in 2015 and farther. The huge issue I have with him is can he coach and that so far is unseen so don’t knight this guy yet. But he is getting NJ back into the fold-GREAT NEWS!!

Just maybe sometime in the near future we meet at a football game and we get into a healthy discussion about academics and why the public education system is failing the kids. This is not the forum to discuss the problems,but boy I would sure like to talk to you in person about what’s wrong with it.

Late to the convo, but here’s my 2 cents. Terry, I love your concern from academics, but Dr. Bill is right on this and I have said the same on other posts. We need to take some risks, especially on 4 star talent. I don’t think it hurts the team at all. We may still have him in January, and as for depth, we now seem to have more WR than we can get on the field in two years! I don’t think they are all of the caliber of KJ Williams, so again, where’s the hurt?
Ron, not qualifying I beieve refers to the minimum requirements set forth by the NCAA. You don’t meet those, you don’t play no matter what school. Once they get there, yes, the UNCs and others can cheat to their hearts content, but you need the min. qualifying scores to play, it is not an admissions thing. This is why I don’t really understand Terry’s “hurt the team” comment. Should we have taken a lesser WR that would make the grade, but not the team? We are still in the driver’s seat to land KJ when/if he does get the needed scores, and if prep, he still has all his eligibility.
I think our current class is great, but the ranking is based on quantity more than quality right now. I am not saying it won’t better, but it may instead get worse based on other gets for other schools, as well as senior season evaluations. I am hoping our coaches prove out as great talent evaluators, and our guys get better rankings.
The kicker get is GREAT! SU has such a kicking history and when you watch the last two years and losing games because of our FG kicking, or HCSS going for it on 4th and long from the 35, well something needed to change and we’ve been on this kid for a while.
Ron I think Devonte Davis is long gone. I am glad we got a verbal from Kelly, but he may be just as hard to hold on to. It will only take PSU or Mich St. calling with a need to fill a spot for him to flip IMHO.
The NJ four that Strickland spoke of was he, Ellison (silent verbal until 8/11), Ryslick, and Fox I think. Fox is a long shot. I am not sure we are into Ryslick. I want the TE Jake Pickard. That is a NJ kid, who with Kelly on board would still make a pretty fearsome foursome. Don’t forget that CT kid Guidice is really from NJ. This is his first/last year at prep school in CT. He was in NJ the last three. The name is being recalled, the books getting dusted off in NJ. We are slowly coming back to prominence there. PSU will be our major comp in NJ for the future (along with all the other bigs who cherry pick the state, like Michigan and ND).

I just read that the above mentioned Fox listed a top five. We are on it. I don’t think we have more than 5 spots left and I am worried we will have more candidates than spots. The D-line has holes to fill (Austrian Robinson, Jamal Milan) three – five LBs, (Qaadir Sheppard, Jordan Fox, Sawyer Dawson, Troy Henderson, Kyle Pugh) and TE/Y has at least two candidates (Alex Parkinson, Jake Pickard).
I too believe that Syracuse will drop in the rankings come February before NLO signing day. It’s a nice topic for group discussion this early in the year though.
