The Syracuse Orange recruiting team continued to build on their string of recent commitments on Saturday afternoon when they received a verbal from the unrated but versatile Shyheim Cullen, who plays linebacker and also had experience at running back.
Boston College, Rutgers, and Miami also considered Cullen.
Last season, Cullen totaled 60 tackles and 12.5 sacks for Lowell High School in Massachusetts.  He has solid size at 6’1” and 210 pounds.  He becomes the 14th member of the recruiting class of 2015. While his commitment is big, what is really important is that Cullen is from Massachusetts. 
Scott Shafer has started to open the gate for recruiting in 2015, and is diversifying his commitments.  Florida is an extremely popular recruiting zone for Syracuse football.  Of the 14 commits for the class of 2015, five are from Florida. 
But Shafer has started to pull players from other zones.  He is using his Midwestern roots to appeal to recruits like Andrejas Duerig or Cody Conway from Illinois.  Shafer is also reestablishing the Orange’s recruiting prowess in the mid-Atlantic and New England region.  Shafer already has one New Jersey recruit locked up, and two Connecticut recruits.  New Jersey is considered one of the most talented states with regards to high school football, and there would be huge implications for Shafer, George McDonald and co. to reestablish the Orange’s presence there.
2014’s recruiting class had only one player from New Jersey, and six from Florida alone.  There are three recruits from Pennsylvania, and six from Illinois.  Shafer’s ties to the area really helped him in his first recruiting class.  While having a presence in the Midwest and in Florida is very good, what Syracuse needs to do is become the predominant recruiter for New Jersey, Massachusets and the surrounding states.  No other teams in the area are laying claim to it (Rutgers and Boston College haven’t capitalized) and with another successful season, Syracuse could really start to work towards controlling the area and put Syracuse in the driver’s seat for recruiting in the coming years.

love it, i see us turning the corner on recruiting. i like what there doing recruiting wise going florida, chicago, conn, mass, and nj. i hope we can get a couple more from nj though.
Another NR for SU!! But wait a minute I like this get!! I hope the king of homies RON doesn’t fall off his orange thrown. He has that toughness in him. Over the recent years S has gotten maybe’s in with a hope of building up. Cullen is already there. That’s the difference I see in most NR that SU gets. They just are not close to being ready. SU needs talent now. Yes Cullen might not play in 2015, but I’d gamble on him for sure. The other 20 or so NR’s over the last decade no frigging way!!
CAUTION on Cullen. Great story, but some where in that story there has to be something about qualifying on grades. After all he was a surprise get. Poor recording not to say something on his grades. Not qualifying in this world of CFB is throwing away a verbal=worthless. Hope I’m wrong, but have seen it before from SU’s coaching staff!!
DO NOT FORGET THE KIDS OF PSABUSEDU!! THE NCAA DID!!
In time our NR/2*/3* recruits will be just fine. Brandon Ginetti, the CT DE that gave a verbal looks like a very good player and in 3 years he could be another contributor. CT TE Chris Clark who was NR last summer got his 1st offer from SU. He is now a 5* TE and Scout’s #1 TE in US that just gave a verbal to Michigan. Clark and Ginetti are both in the CT Prep league and may play against eachother this Fall.
Guidice is in the CT Prep league as well.
It will be interesting to see how our NR rated recruits stack up athletically against Clark who is a 5*.
Shy Cullen looks very good. If other schools are staying away due to grades I have no proble sticking with the player as long as he can turn his schoolwork around. If it means a year in prep school so be it.
Spruill and Davis took that route and it turned out well for the players and SU.
Five star recruits and 4 star recruits think they are better than Syracuse!! It will take some consistent years of double digit wins…contending for ACC titles and big time Bowl wins, before 4 and 5 star talent seriously consider the Cuse. Having said all that, I like the direction our recruiting is going in. These NR recruits, if our staff thinks they can play, then who are we to criticize them, after all, their paychecks depend on these kind of evaluations…what’s at stake for us/…Not much!

Shy is a LB, and the word is that he’ll likely be an OLB at Cuse. He hits hard and is more a run stopper and blitzer than a pass coverage guy. He has issues or concerns with grades, and apparently that is what scared BC away. I heard Miami had good interest, but they were concerned with his strong lean to SU (maybe smoke, but that’s what I heard). Kid wanted Miami,(nostalgic for their old 80s-90s days) and mom wanted BC (close to home)but all seemed to be very excited and impressed with SU through the recruiting process.
Today’s commit from the Safety Marquise Blair from Ohio is more Terry’s speed (4.4 speed, 6’3″ 180 lbs) My worry with this commit is in part the timing. It seems the staff was expecting/hoping for a visit from Daiquan Kelly the big safety (6’3″ 200 lbs) from Union City in NJ. He didn’t make it and claimed car trouble as his reason. He was at PSU the next day and it seems we are a backup for him (he has no PSU offer, and me be content to go to Rutgers if it doesn’t happen and we are full). It could be that our coaches decided to move on from him, and took Blair’s commit.
Giudice is on the same team as Chris Clark. Both are NJ guys that go to prep school in CT.
Jake Pickard is a TE with 3 stars from NJ that visited the campus Sunday and had a positive outlook. He was coming from Ohio State. I don’t know if he has an OSU offer, but I know he has an Oregon offer. I think we could make that one happen.
Strong rumor is that we have a silent from Daivon Ellison, a safety/corner from Don Bosco in NJ. Not sure if that will bring in DT Ryslik as well, but not sure if we’ve offered. He wants PSU too, but like us and RU as options.
The two NY products on D that we want (Q Sheppard and A Robinson?) seem to be absent, and both like RU it seems. Blech.
