Weighing the Good against the Bad: Syracuse Athletics and Daryl Gross

When it comes to SU athletics, does Gross’s good outweigh his bad?

In his time as Syracuse’s Athletic Director, Dr. Daryl Gross has gotten his fair share of criticism. Much of it is warranted, but right now, Gross has the Orange moving in the right direction as a whole, and is the right man to lead the Orange into the ACC.

Gross’s tenure has not been without the bad. Of course, there was the hiring on Greg Robinson, which SU is still recovering from more than nine years after the decision was made and six years after he was fired. Yes, that hire may have set back SU football about five years, but the two coaches Gross has hired since look like slam dunks. Doug Marrone did such a good job righting the ship that he was hired away to the NFL. And even though it is just one season, Scott Shafer looks like he is on his way to being a great college coach as well, as Gross even said as much last week to Syracuse.com. As bad a hire Robinson was, the program was already on a decline following the great years under Coach Mac and the early part of Pasqualoni’s tenure.

The next big criticism of Gross is the delay of the new football practice facilities. This is very much warranted. Syracuse’s football facilities need updating, and they needed to be updated before the Orange moved into the ACC. But it still hasn’t happened. Now, construction is not expected to begin until at least after Memorial Day weekend. This means there is likely no chance these facilities are ready for next season. While the designs of the practice facility may be another point of contention, it almost doesn’t matter what the building looks like at this point, it is just important that the building gets done as soon as possible.

Lastly, football game attendance has been a notable problem. It has not been at the level it should be as a major conference program. The attendance needs to get better, but this is unfairly put on Dr. Gross. The attendance being in the 30,000s is not only Dr. Gross’ problem, but also falls on the students, the school, the team and the fans.

Ultimately, it is important to look at the good things Dr. Gross has done for Syracuse University. He has brought the university into the ACC, bringing in more revenue to the athletic department. He has moved on from the Groober era by hiring both Doug Marrone and Scott Shafer. The football team has played in, and won, a bowl game three of the last four seasons. The basketball program is poised for success for years to come, and it looks like there is a plan to elevate Mike Hopkins to head coach when Jim Boeheim decides to retire.

Gross is moving into a territory where his biggest negative, hiring Greg Robinson, is nearly 10 years in the past. He has since taken steps to grow the football program through advertising, creating the “New York’s College Team” slogan, and hiring the right coaches. Gross moved the Orange into the ACC at the right time and brought more money into the school. Doc Gross has show that even with the problems he has had, he is the right person to lead the Orange as they continue to transition into the ACC.

    In a discussion I had with him(Dr. Gross) last October,he made the statement that the materials needed to build the new IPF was completed and was going to start arriving on campus through November and construction was going to start right after Thanksgiving. Fast forward(5 months)to May of 2014 and the damn building hasn’t started yet and now your telling us construction won’t start until sometime in June,if it’s started at all.

    Because of that discussion I feel that DR Gross is a con artist in over his head and needs to get released/fired from his job and sent back to USC where he came from. I don’t like being lied too. But what can we expect? He’s following what every other liberal Democrat does,just look at what’s happening in Washington DC as they continue to destroy our country.

    So what is the hold up concerning the start of the new IPF? Why doesn’t he come out and tell us what’s happening? Is the university in a argument with certain city officials as to how much they need to get paid in kick backs? Mayor Lee Alexander was great at receiving monies that he didn’t deserve.

    I just want to kbnow if the damn thing will ever be built.

    Seth,
    Try architecture. You just built a real pile of crap!
    Gross no more brought us to the ACC than he brought Pitt to the ACC. It was inevitable. Big East football/basketball couldn’t coexist. At best, he didn’t screw it up! They wanted and needed us.. Cuse is almost a NYC team! Games at Madison Square Gardem are home games! The ACC wanted a NYC TV audience.
    Robinson was a disaster we haven’t recovered from. He was Gross’s hand picked USC partner! All to please the “witch”. They kept him inspite of the fact he was making us a laughing stock! It takes years.. More than 10 to regain a reputation. He has done nothing to fix it!
    There is no question Coach P was has his days as a headcoach. The game has left him behind. That said.. He was a classy guy and a good guy! The “witch”, and her sycophant Gross, treated him like shit. Syracuse people are better than that.. At least till those two showed up! Coach P gave a lot to Cuse and he deserved to be treated with respect!
    The facility is an on going embarrassment. The money rolls in from the ACC. There is no bigger example of his lack of effectiveness. He is a clown..
    I like Shafer.. Let’s not crown him a winner after one year. The last short timer hadn’t really proved anything yet but ran for the hills. So will Safer..no one want to be with a team that doesn’t get support from the athletic director or administration.
    I can’t imagine why anyone would try and dress up this pig! He has hurt our University. He has behaved badly. He continues to be ineffective. Send the little bastard to Newark with the other piece of garbage!
    Fire Gross.. He sucks!

    Really VA, I am with you. Ron I understand that you are upset about being lied to. you are right to feel that way, but I am not sure how much of it was a lie, and how much of it was what he understood to be the truth at that time. he is really not involved in the IPF on a day to day basis at least. I would be surprised if he wasn’t just regurgitating what he was told by Joe G. If the job of staying the course is so easy, and I agree, it seems to be, then what is going on with Julie Hermanson and Rutgers? I think we need ot acknowledge that Gross has brought a new mindset and aggressive approach to the Athletic Dept. that wasn’t there for a while, as much as I liked the career of Crouthammel. It was Jake that helped create the Big East and he that assured we were a hoops power, potentially at the expense of football. Gross is trying to take a full scope approach and while many of us would like to see football put in front of the priority list, it seems he had a large task in front of him and he is trying to knock off the list the smaller easier tasks first, like Olympic sports. Don’t blame him for his pedigree, he was hired in from the PacTen, where Olympics are highly valued. It shouldn’t surprize us thats what he’s bringing. If we wanted football only, we should have hired an SEC or B1G associate AD.

    The IPF delays are embarrassing, but I think that blame needs to be put where it belongs, on the city and the private businesses of Syracuse who are looking ot go for another ride on the dime of the private university up on the hill. It is not SU that is delaying the project. Ron, you know the materials are there. There is no way SU invests in that material only to delay it, or walk away. It will get done. Should SU take a harder line with those creating problems? I think so, but I don’t think I would buy in to extorsion if that’s what’s happening.

    Now Seth, to Cuse17’s comment, stay away from architecture. Your comment on the design is your opinion and smells of a stink without a source. Complaining for the sake of complaining. The article you referred to from Zephan is WAY off base and I have told the FizzFam this on too many occasions to count. The $17 mil is not the cost of the IPF. The IPF budget is more in the $9-10 mil range. The other money went to other projects that were captured under the IPF budget. All anyone talks about is what a great facility the Melo Center is. It is a white box. This facility brings a cohesive look to the Lampe/Manley/Melo complex. The sloped roof not only helps with the harsh winter snow load, it is a less expensive means of getting additional height. To bring the sides of the facility up taller had an exponential cost. There is additional structure required for taller solid walls in the form of wind loads. That adds to much bigger costs FAST. I am biased, but I like the sleek contemporary design. I think it better matches the program direction, like the uniforms that all the fans hate (and the players/recruits love). Does it lack some programatic flourishes that would put it over the top? I think so, but again, that is a cost issue and without any donors, SU pledged $10 mil to the project (Melo center had Melo and his money before it had a design and construction plan).

    Your looking for an argument I’m not involved in… Recently, I suggested Seth avoid Journalism as a career! The architecture comment was a suggestion he had built a story from nothing.. Architected a myth!
    Gross sucks.. And I do know something about that. I don’t give a damn what the outside of the building looks like and neither do the kids!
    I care what’s inside.. Proper facilities to build student athletes! Facilities that compete with first class programs!
    WHERE THE HELL IS IT! WHEN?
    I stand behind Gross being a little sycophant and the witches lap dog! We’re was he when we needed him! He let her run all over our football program with her liberal bullshit! I was there when the ball players struck! They were right..was it necessary to present awards 30 years later at halftime on national tv. That was for her and Gross not the ballplayers. There are a hundred examples. He stood by and watched her and Robinson wreck our athletic programs and department! They built us a reputation that had self corrected years ago! Just like the bullshit with the girl raped at the downtown campus! They both live in a world that Cuse would be better without!
    Fire Gross and send him to Newark with the “witch”!

    I am confused on why we are so frustrated with Gross. I know the building being held up isnt his fault. He wants it done. I also dont get how now one sees that he has taken our overall athletics program considerably higher in the rankings than we have ever been. There are some things he could do better, but we all have that. Every sport we are in is on the up, boys and girls. It will be a star on his belt buckle if he can get football facility up and going.

  8. Malone Avatar
    Malone

    Cuse17, I wasn’t looking for an argument with you at all. I just didn’t like a lot if the article, architecture commentary especially, so I was riffing off your comment. I guess I am not fully aware of all you describe, but I never liked the idea of the warehouse being permanent and I have NO love for Nancy. Robinson will be hard for him to live down, and I don’t think he should have retired 44. In general, I’d say he’s doing better than Rutgers or PSU or Maryland, and I find it funny that it was Rutgers that hired Cantor. Like I said, he may not be the right guy for football, but he is what we should have expected, and I can’t hate all that he’s done.

  9. Ron Avatar

    I guess the people who are worried about the design of the building haven’t been following ESPN when they are reviewing the players that might get drafted working out for the NFL scouts in their own facility. Don’t expect a castle for the future recruits to practice in here. What you can excpect is maybe a 120/140 yard long by maybe 70/75 yards wide indoor field for the players to run and practice their plays for the team that they will bge playing on a Saturday. Practicing punting the ball will be held on an outdoor field.

    I personally like the design of the building and the 10-15 people that we tailgate with will enjoy the sight while tailgating every weekend that there is a game. Will they build offices for the coaches,a room to review tapes in to get ready for the next team,a weight room,a sauna/showers for the players? Who know’s and more importantly who cares? Syracuse has all of the above amenities already at the Manley Field House complex. Why would you want to build more wasting money on things that you already have? Doesn’t make any sense to me for all that complain about a new building getting built.

    The main focus right now is for the damn thing to be built.

    Malone your probably right. Dr Gross can only tell us what is being reported to him.

  10. Malone Avatar
    Malone

    Ron, your views on the building are refreshing. The IPF is exactly what the acronym implies. It is not a weight room, locker facility, offices, or any of that. I do believe that will come. I also think football will eventually take the field hockey field, as it is between Manley and the IPF. Upon completion, SU will have 3 indoor turf facilities. That is an embarrassment of riches for a mid-sized private school. Too many people saw the video of Bama’s locker/training facility, or Oregon’s Nike funded student/athlete education center. We don’t have that kind of cash or donations and I’m not sure we ever will, but as Ron said, this isn’t even that type of facility. It is an indoor, full sized practice field, of which we only have one now.
    Ron, I’m not saying let Gross off the hook, just that he probably didn’t even know he wasn’t telling you the reality. If he said he didn’t know the status, instead of saying what he did, we’d all be up in arms about that (me included).

  11. John Humphries Avatar

    Sorry Seth. SU was brought into the ACC because of Woolford not Gross. Anyone who knows SU history understands that SU would have gone to the ACC when Woolford raided East Coast Miami, Virginia Tech and BC but for Virginia politics preventing it. To give credit to Gross for the ACC move is a huge overplay. The damage side of the Gross ledger (Affirmative Action West Coast hire) far outweighs any possible accomplishment. Thanks to Nancy we have had him and IMO we need new blood at that AD post.

  12. Ron Avatar

    @Malone;

    Dr Gross is an enigma that for me is hard to figure out. Look,I’ve seen the good side of what he does. There’s no question that all of the athletic programs have improved during his tenure as AD.

    What bothers me most about Dr Gross,was he became Nancy Cantor’s(knowingly or not) accomplice in destroying the Syracuse Football program in witch it’s still trying to recover. The way the two of them handled the firing of Head Coach Paul Pasqualoni to the hiring of Greg Robinson still befuddles the hell out of me. His comments about Syracuse University not accepting any transfers of any of the Duke Lacrosse players,because he too thought the whole team was guilty of raping that girl. My point is since he’s been here he’s made some stupid remarks and if your right about him being a guy who doesn’t have day to day knowledge of the program that he’s in charge of. Well what good is he?

    The dynamic duel “Chancellor Melvin Egger’s and AD Jake Crouthammel. Both of these men brought their vision of what Syracuse Football should be and brought it to fruition.

    In the end though,I think if Dr. Gross is to stay as our AD,then it’s paramount that he becomes more of a “hands on” type of director and gets more involved in the day to day operations of Syracuse Athletics.

    Just my thoughts gentlemen. Just my thoughts.

    Your surprised Nancy went to Rutgers.. Are you kidding.. You didn’t hear the Rutgers crap with Condy Rice? They are as left of left as it comes. It was a safety net for one of their own. The President of our Trustees did a masterful job running her off! It’s a great insider story of a clever businessman outsmarting an arrogant little academic asshole!
    She is in the middle of Newark in a downtown campus at the bottom of her profession…right were she belongs.. Send Gross to live with her!
    Maybe he can start a women’s/ minority/ convicted felons/ welfare receipiences downtown campus football team.. Head coach.. Obvious.. Robinson!

    Ron..your right.. It was time..but the way they handled Coach P was an embarrassment. He deserved our respect..they treated him like garbage…one more addition to a rotten reputation they created. Only guy that was safe was Jimmy! He told them to stay out of his program..they had no choice!

  15. Ron Avatar

    Cuse17;

    Look at what we have with Jimmy B. It’s taken him close to 40 years to build the program into what it is today. Your right when you say that Cantor wanted to get rid of him too but didn’t have enough fortitude to fire him.

    Nancy Cantor did to Syracuse University exactly what she did to the University of Illinois and that was she took two very proud very distinguished athletic programs at those two schools and almost totally destroyed them.

    We were on the right track to national respectability again under Coach MacPhearson and it continued with Pasqualoni. Let’s skip Robinson and Malone. I felt at one time not so long ago if Syracuse continued it’s fall from grace that it would become a DII or DIII program. That would have been down right shameful.

    I honestly feel that we’re on the right track again with Coach Shafer and I support him 1000%. Dr. Gross and the adminstration better get behind this man fast and I mean like maybe 10 years ago.

    WOW!! RON this “liberal to centralist” guy and PROUD of it knows something about new facilities. Less than 10 years ago we were promised a brand new facility and a much needed one at that. Now in value it is not as much as the IPF, but still a good chunk of change!! There were issues as with all NEW jobs, but it got built and the grand opening in little over a “year”=honestly. So SU and the Doc screwed that up. A good administration would have beaten down the bushes and pushed some buttons to get this going!! My admiration did and it got things done!! Its all about the super popularly of the SUBB program than the SUFB program and the disgrace of that. A great AD would demand a change in that feeling nation wide. Gross just refuses to do that!! So far because of this I’m not a fan of his, but not convinced on firing him yet. With no major improvements in the SUFB program athletically or image wise and the IPF stalling then I’d say its time for him to go!!

    Where do you(Seth) feel dougie did a good job!! Check his over all record????? .500 ain’t good!! STOP making dougie a savior. He’s coward to leave SU without any real reason or at least manning up and telling us why he left!!!! It wasn’t his dream job!! But he left because he didn’t like were he was at-PERIOD!! STOP YOUR HOMER CRAP NOW!! You sound like the Axeman!!

    Malone I totally disagree with you, you said “he’s doing better than Rutgirls, PSABUSEDU and Maryland”. The final results DO NOT show that??? Talent is always leaving and going to these programs yearly. SUFB has lost way too many players to them. If he was doing his job SUFB sincerely should nab at least 50% of them. That’s showing an improvement in the SUFB program in the NE!!

    After a round of golf(kicked butt too) we stopped at a local tavern to tip back a few. The owner was there I’d say he’s in his 50’s and he has a Syracuse t-shirt on. So I asked him how he felt about the HCSS and the SUFB season coming up. He said “I don’t care”!! Now we are sitting very close to the Pennsy boarder here=FOOTBALL COUNTRY!!! He said “I’m a season ticket holder” for SUBB. I hear this more and more and more!! I’m telling you SUFB has its hands tied with its own fans let alone other regions of this nation!!

    DO NIOT FORGET THE KIDS OF PSABUSEDU!! THE NCAA DID!!

    Terry, I respect that, but there is an issue that needs to be shared with the fanbase, and your barkeep story just screams it. It is not entirely Gross’ fault that the fanbase is not interested in SUFB. Winning will cure all ills, but this is a problem with the fanbase, at its core, not the AD. I only fear that they go backwards with a new hire, and I think Gross has done a more than servicable job, even though I am not happy about everything. Marrone was a good hire. You may be able to say that Gross dropped the ball keeping him, but I’d say that he was going no matter what. I think this all stems from Nancy and the GRob hire. The damage was horrific, but we are coming out of it. We will see the other side of the mountain, and I think soon. Like Ron said, Jimmy B has been at it for 40 years, and he has one NC and only recently are we a consistent national power. Part of that, is getting to the Final Four, or beating Duke and UNC. Part of that is the old Georgetown rivalry. These are the types of things our football team needs to do or find to get to similar status I think. We need a team to hate, and we need to show we can beat them, as well as anyone else in our league. Right now, we have not shown we can beat FSU, or Clemson. I think we can take Clemson soon, FSU I am not as sure. I think we need to hate Miami again, as they are on the rise (and to that point, Gross is lobbying to play them more often).

  19. Terry Avatar
    Terry

    Malone dougie was not a good hire. A hire I’ll agree, but not a good one. History shows him not a winner that’s not a good hire. He’s just one win above GROB-really!! As for the SUFB failure to connect to the CUSE Nation, DR Gross has tried very little to improve that too. He has the legitimate soap box to challenged this injustice, but he’s a Basketball guy and it shines through. He won’t raddle the bushes at all around JB’s program!! I’ve mentioned this number of times. As for the JB example. Its simple and its spelled “THE DOME”. SUBB would be another nothing without the Dome. Players just love the massive crowds. Year in and out SU has this fantastic scene at the Dome for BB. Since just before PEARL(the best time for me-no BS then)the DOME got the players. But now yes SU gets talent, but not like the old days!! College Football is by far NUMBER ONE in the USA for ALL COLLEGE sports-PERIOD. Yet this blind fan base would rather see its traditional FB program die on the vine than to be on equal terms with the SUBB program. DR. Gross should or better yet has to let the word out to the fan base stop kicking the SUFB program around. HCSS has enough problems breaking into the bottom of the elite ACC yet let alone having no real support from his boss. DR. Gross could say and mean it that the fan base of SU needs to get excited about the SUFB. But he’d rather drink cocktails with Melo or other past SUBB players. Don’t even get me going on the delay of the IPF the whole nation see’s that disaster and recruiting will show that. Bless you HCSS!! Your a saint!!

  20. Ron Avatar

    @Terry;

    You keep on mentioning the Dome as what has made JB. I hate to disagree with you as to what made him as one of the best in the nation.

    What’s made Jimmy B is the fact that he’s been here for going on 40 year’s and has given us 20+ win seasons for the last 35 years. Gone to the NCAA numerious times and brought home a National Championship in 2003,and still with all that that man has done for his players and community,doen’t get the credit that he deserves.

    What’s made JB is his unique coaching style. I started watching Syracuse back in 1975 at Manley Field House when JB had the Louie & Bouie show. At that time Manley field had a reputation as one of the worst in the country to come play a game. Jbh tried and failed to get the likes of North Carolina and Dean Smith to come play. Dean smith told syracuse the only way for that to happen was to spot them 20 points to start the game. It wasn’t until 1982 or 1983 that North Carolina led by Michael Jorden,James Worthy came up to Syracuse and played in the dome. Moving from Manley Field House witch seat 9500/10,000 fans max to the dome witch seats 35/36,000 was brilliant,simply because it gave more fans an opportunity to come watch them play live. Now remember they didn’t have the big TV contracts in the early days either,which helped draw the fans to the dome.

    When 36,000 fans show up for a game dressed in Orange and shown on National TV,they become part of the game,that alone makes you want to sit and watch it. The football team is a couple of years away from getting the same kind of crowd. We all just need to be patient and let Scott Shafer do his job rebuilding the program. Remember Terry,there’s nowhere else in college/NBA basketball that draws the fans like Syracuse does. I think that we all should take a bow for a job well done.

    Terry, and all. I am not saying you have to like Gross, but blaming him for focusing SU on hoops too much is rediculous. More title shots, higher profile recruits, more recent championship, and most of it before Gross got here. Jake helped create the Big East, and it didn’t include football at first. Jake built the Dome, and it was to get a bigger venue for hoops. Football was #2 for him. He set the table, Gross is just sitting in the big chair now. As to Marrone, Robinson buried us so deep that a guy who tore it all apart and rebuilt it, leaving with a .500 record and a big win in a bowl did a good job in my opinion. He moved on, and so did we. If he was still here and still producing .500 teams, we’d be screaming for his head.

  22. Ron Avatar

    Sorry everyone,I spelled witch wrong. It should have been which.

  23. Terry Avatar
    Terry

    Malone YOUR WRONG ABOUT THE DOME. It was built for FOOTBALL!! And Gross is a BB junkie no doubt!! Results are as matter of a record. .500 season and a low bowl victory do not make a successful coach anywhere!! Other words SU would be in the national lime light like you think dougie did for SU!! Instead SU struggles to get to .500 or one game above that. That’s good????

    RON ask any quality sports media figure out there that KNOWS College Basketball and he/she will tell you that JB is not a good bench coach!! The DOME made his program. At first JB bitched like a old women(sorry to use that term)that MFH was the place not the DOME. He said “the DOME was for football not basketball”!! JB is for JB just watch ONE of his pressers let alone all of them and you can see that. Most away games in a small Areas are scary!! MFH was one I’ll grant you that. But I think the DOME does not do that for the SUBB team. The Pomp and Circumstance of the DOME make the SUBB program. Really JB’s assistants made the team more than he did. Since Bernie got fired SU’s big men are average compared when BERNIE was there!!

  24. Ron Avatar

    @Terry;

    Terry all of the so called experts have nit picked Jim Boeheim and the Syracuse Basketball program to death and all that they can come up with is”JB is not a good bench coach!! Come on man give me a frigging break,please!!!!

    Longevity(40 years and 35 years of 20+ winning seasons) as the (HOF head coach of the program)is what has made Jim Boeheim,Jim Boeheim. The dome has allowed 23-36K fans to witness live the games that they love so much and has turned itself into nothing more than a “cash cow” for the university.

    The only real quality sports media figure out there that KNOWS anything about College Basketball is Jay Bilas. Everyone else needs to go back to school and learn how to write and learn how to comment on a sport they know nothing about.
    It’s pennies to dollars when comparing the travel expenses of the basketball team to the football team.
    I think it was the 2010/2011 basketball team that generated $25.6 million dollars for the university. I think by joining the ACC that number has increased.

  25. Malone Avatar
    Malone

    Ron, Terry has it out for JB and hoops. No one program should have to suffer to see another succeed. If Terry wants to believe the Dome was built for a middling independent program, instead of the new hoops league the AD created, designed to showcase North East basketball on TV and in huge venues, to capitalize on budding greatness and budding rivalries while the football team played on the road, without a home field. Yeah, it was for football…it’s all Gross’ fault we won in 2003, or made the finals in ’96 & ’87. Bing, Louie/Bowie, Pearl, Moten, Wallace, DC, Sherman, Raf Addison, Shayes, Owens, Rautins the Elder. All Gross’ doing at a football first school, right? Football can and should be great again, but don’t blame the success of a marquee program, that brings money and athletic publicity to the school for footballs position, and don’t over credit Gross for making it that way. He has done a good job of keeping hoops on top. Now he needs to work harder to get football on that plane. The fans need to do the heavy lifting right now. Prove football a worthy investment to the administration by showing up to witness the next golden era for the program.

    RON/MALONE you two are the reason SUFB is ranked lowly nationally. Your satisfied with the SUBB program and nothing will change that-fine. But Gross has failed on more than hiring GROB. His TOTAL interest in the nations 2nd best sport(CFB-NFL=1st) is lost. He’d rather let the good times roll on for the SUBB program. Malone you listed name of PLAYERS I to can list many FB players that really made it past college. Bing and maybe DC are the only two to make after SUBB. Football history is far above that. Yes SUBB brings the $$$$$$$$$$$. But the MOVE TO THE ACC OUT OF THE LOWLY BIG LEAST WAS FOR FOOTBALL NOT BASKETBALL!! SO SUFB will bring in $$$$$$$$$$$$$ to if GROSS does his job correctly!!
    RON-JB is a decent coach, but not a great coach. He has broken our hearts more times than One NC can cure!! Has had to many embarrassing(last years is right there)moments too!! I do not hate SUBB!! I watch every TV game they play if I can!! But its (college basketball) not college football!! Many times I stick up for them against anyone who does not like them. But you homers just refuse to see the faults that are there!! The lack of SUPER interest from the AD, poor fan support and promised facilities not showing up yet. All of these are a few issues holding back SUFB!! Malone stand in the center of the DOME like I did at the time it was to be opened, it was very impressive!! And not one of us saw a Basketball Area we saw a wonderful FOOTBALL STADIUM!! That’s the truth!! Go there today and stand at the 50 yard line and you’d see the same as we did. Yes I’m football first like most of the USA is!! That does not make me like a Hoya fan. Does it???? It makes me protective against ones whom for some reason refuse to see the light that hurts my beloved CUSE FOOTBALL PROGRAM. And that will never change!! Either against non SU fans or so called SUFB fans who think they know it all. They first have to take their binders off and see the true light!! GEZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!

    @Terry;

    ‚ÄúRON/MALONE you two are the reason SUFB is ranked lowly nationally‚Äù I’ve followed the football program since I was a kid in 1959. Got married and had three sons that I’ve converted into Syracuse Football Fans. I truly enjoy the tailgating we share with the friends that we’ve met over the years and the discussions that we’ve had during that time. I’ve seen/been through the best and worst times of Syracuse Program. I’ve been a season ticket holder for almost 25 years now. I’ve traveled to a lot of away games and this year will travel to the Central Michigan and Boston College games. I’m sure Malone has probably done as much as I. Because we both see things a little differently than you,doesn’t make us an enemy of the program. To make a statement Terry that fans like him and I are the reason that ‚ÄúSUFB is ranked lowly nationally‚Äù is one of the most ridiculous statements that anyone can make. One attribute that both Malone and I share is the fact that we’re both patient and realize it’s going to take time to rebuild the program and we both feel that Coach Shafer is the man leading this effort at the right time for the program.
    RON-JB is a decent coach, but not a great coach. Terry this is another one of those comments that I consider is STUPID. I’ve never said I was satisfied with SUBB. If I was,they’d be bringing home the national championship every year. But you see that’s almost nearly impossible. I’m one of Jimmy B’s biggest fans,love the man. What more can I say. When he loses a game people jump on the band wagon and try telling the rest of us how lousy of a coach he is. If all of you that complain about the way he coaches the game,go to the Basketball Hall Of Fame and see how they feel about the man and the basketball program you’ll come away knowing that others that live outside the Syracuse area feel differently about the man and program that most of you hate and criticize.
    I’ve told you before Terry just how much I love Syracuse Athletics. I try not to pick one sport over the other,I love them all. One of the perks that I enjoy working my part time job at the University is I get a chance to meet and talk with a lot of different athletes from all of the different teams and for me,there’s nothing more enjoyable. I always have been and will always be a Syracuse Fan Terry. Just because Malone and I see things differently don’t make us bad people.

    Amen Ron. Terry, I think I see your true point, which I interpret as “never be satisfied”. I assure you as Ron pretty much stated above for himself, I am not satisfied. I would love to see more success on the gridiron, but I’ll be slow to put the entirety of the blame on Gross, and I absolutly refuse to blame him for the basketball first culture that existed at our school long before he got here (which is why I was naming those names). We have the movie “The Express” and a great fball history, but it is hoops that ESPN is doing documentaries on. It is hoops with the HOF coach no matter what any of us thinks of his ability. I was on the inside during my time on the hill. I had the somewhat unique position of being a pure student, with a basketball player and a football player for my roommates. Hoops has held the crown up on the hill for a long time now. I would love to see them share it. What the rest of the nation does is immaterial if the local community doesn’t care. Can’t just force it through, the fans need to come out.

  29. Ron Avatar

    @Terry;

    If you need someone to blame for the low rating of our football program,always think of and thank Nancy Cantor for all that she did to help turn the fortune of the program. I want you to send her an e-mail asking her questions like, how is it that during your time at Syracuse you tripled the schools debt 300% to a new total of $495 million dollars and not one penny of the amount you spent went to upgrading the football program? Her salary was well over $1 million per year,put her husband to work at what maybe $150/$250K per year and had a shadow/ghost chancellor that was put on the payroll. Ask her how much that cost per year? Also ask her how much it cost to live in the Sheraton Hotel and how long where you there while renovation on the chancellor’s mansion was getting done?

    You have some valid points,but your hell bent on ignoring other people who has different opinions than yours. Attacking the true fans of the program Terry puts you into another realm where noone there knows what the hell their talking about and that’s sad.

    Your message might resonate with some like minded people,but when you make statements thinking fans like Malone and I are to blame because of what we feel,I have to answer the critizism.

    As someone who works on a college campus downstate in NYC, that delay in the IPF is not really an oddity. I have seen delays in research facilities where the grant money has already been allocated. I’ve seen all kinds of obstacles and false starts etc.

    So Ron, when you say lie to you, I can’t say they he did or didn’t based solely on the IPF delays. There are MANY factors at play especially in construction.

    To be honest, I don’t see dr Gross as a horrible AD, because I have some realistic expectations of the fb side and while not a fan of SU BB, they are fairly consistent. They have a good track record of success and perennial top flight program.

    btw all this “leftist” and “liberal” word slinging really has no place on a sports messageboard/site. Political ideology and race are supposed to be irrelevant in the ultimate meritocracy of sports.

    In the end, I’m really not sure how good or bad Gross is for SU. With another AD and no change in the attendance to Fb games, or cash influx, the SUBB and FB programs would probably be in the same exact position.

    BK sounds like an enormous voice of reason. Your conversation about the construction of research facilities in NYC has me very intrigued as that sounds like we may have crossed paths or run in similar circles.

  32. Ron Avatar

    @BK SU FB Fan;

    During my conversations I’ve had with Malone over the few months he’s shed the same light on the subject that you have today. The materials for the shell of the building are stock piled up in a Skytop parking lot. I know at some point the construction crews will arrive and start doing what they do best and start building the building.

    I know it doesn’t happen overnight. I just wish others that use this website would understand that. Malone also explained to me he thought Dr. Gross wasn’t lieing to me back in October. I’ve accepted his explanation of that as well.

    Thanks to both of you for the wisdom that you both have. At times its refreashing to know that some of the members of this website are level headed.

    Like with any online purchase, the person who chooses to buy wine online
    needs to exercise a reasonable amount of caution; there are unscrupulous online wine merchants out there.
