There are two Denzel Wards connected to Syracuse University.
One frightens defensive linemen at 6’6” 307 lbs. that committed and signed with the Orange this past February as a member of the 2014 recruiting class. We can only hope another joins the SU bandwagon next winter in the Class of 2015.
Macedonia (Ohio) Nordonia cornerback Denzel Ward is 140 pounds lighter than the Syracuse bound offensive tackle Denzel Ward. The Orange offered the Class of 2015 Ward back on May 13th. He fields offers from some of the Midwest’s best, Michigan and Ohio State. Bowling Green, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Kent State, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Miami (Oh), Rutgers, Tennessee and Western Michigan have also offered. 
In an interview with Cleveland.com’s Ari Wasserman in late March, Ward credits his legs for much of his success:
 “My speed is a really important part of my game, and the coaches were telling me that they loved how fast I was. Now I just have to stay focused and get better with my technique and footwork.”

A 4.31 second-long 40-yard dash makes this Denzel Ward an attractive piece for a defensive backfield. Wasserman writes Ward has strong ties with Ohio State and Urban Meyer, as Ward is from The Buckeye State. The coaching staff at OSU likes the speed obviously. The raw talent certainly stands out, but like most recruits with speed, improvement in technique and footwork is always possible.   
Ward has to be amped for an opportunity at Ohio State. However, still no offer from the Buckeyes despite Ward’s attendance at their April 12th spring game. Has OSU’s interest decreased in the last two months? Arguably the state of Ohio’s fastest high school player has said all the right things. Again with Wasserman before the spring game:
“I enjoyed going into the defensive meetings with Coach Coombs and watching him dissect the defense and talk about their game plan and scheme. That was really interesting. Then I enjoyed watching them practice later. They played physically, they played fast and it would be something I would love to do.”
It makes me believe Northeast programs like Syracuse and Rutgers are still in the hunt. Scott Shafer’s Midwest ties, as well as chances for immediate playing time could put upstate New York on Ward’s radar. As it tuns out, this is not a George McDonald prize, unfortunately. No long shot here considering SU has already offered and has been in touch.
Ward has blown up the Best of the Midwest Combine and the Orange wouldn’t mind this flash of talent at all. Let the summer swing settle in a bit. We’ll find out just how bad Ohio State wants Ward. If not, look for Syracuse to slide into the discussion more seriously.

Another shot-gun pellet from HCSS!! But who knows!! Maybe he’ll catch the CUSE mojo!! Hope so. Skinny!! But the speed is what SU needs the most. That might sell if offered for starting time right off the bat!! HCSS has to gamble on talent. Not gamble on “hope to have talent”(2 star/NR types)!!
DO NOT FORGET THE KIDS OF PSABUSEDU!! THE NCAA DID!!
Got a feeling one of the other programs in the midwest is going to land him. Body frame does look skinny, but then again these are still teens. Their boddies’ are always changing lol.
Got to give Shafer credit… It may look like shot gun recruiting but kids that never even looked at Cuse.. Good size, good speed, heavily recruited…are at least looking at Cuse. I don’t like being the bridesmaid over and over but that’s how you get in the mix.. Playing time is a big issue to these kids and it should be! I don’t buy the rating systems but it’s all we got. Lots of kids looking at us causes a buzz… I hear the local ,S. Fla, coaches talking Cuse more than ever. We’re in the mix. We’ll get the leftovers. We’ll grab some kids the high school coaches are trying to find homes. Good kids, kids coaches know will work and appreciated the chance…it’s how you build a recruiting program.
I’m pleased with the direction and activity….imagine if we had a decent facility and an Administration that supported the Program!
Getting back into Ohio is a big step for the program. Ohio used to be a prime recruiting territory for the Orangemen. Think Larry Czonka, Charlie Brown DB Anthony Smith and others of course.
Speed speed speed is hard to beat. The competition (e.g., Ohio State) is tough but we are at least fighting a good fight and I always give a grade of E for effort.
If you want to be a big dog……you have to run with the big dogs…..
Here is what recruits should be hearing from the Cuse: We are in one of the top conferences…The ACC. We are an up and coming program and as we continue to rise, so will our media attention and coverage. As we continue to assemble talent, we will be a major player soon!
I have been saying this for some time, because of our football history and our presence in New York, the media is just waiting for Syracuse football to be really good again. When that happens, and the players responsible for making it happen, will all get recognized for having done so. Syracuse Football could be the next Big Thing in College Football…Not Penn State, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Alabama, Texas, Clemson, The U!!….But Syracuse…..Who wants to be a part of this…better sign up quick…..

Dr bill I agree with you. There is a chance SUFB can get into that high tier, but winning must come first!! Over the past 10 years or so the program took gambles that just didn’t work! They have to get decent quality player to SU!!
chris I agree. OHIO is a decent hot bed for talent. Maybe not Fl. or Tx. or Cal, but better than NJ and on par with PA and Georgia. Ohio has a quality HSFB system and coaches too!! Better than most!!
Cuse17 That’s the problem!! When shot gunning talent other talent gets un-interested because of all the blasting going on. In the short run it looks good for SUFB, but in the long run its a failure because it chases away good players, because you can only look/have so many players!!
Terry– don’t agree– we have to get into the conversation…, lot of kids talking Cuse.. Chance to play early.. Rebuild the history….
If we go one on one for the best players we loose. Weak program, marginal facilities..a low profile program.. We get nobody!
Cuse17 Conversation starts interest yes, but lately gets SU nothing. If you got 10 spots left and have 30 invites someone will see the light get pissed and leave. Also a portion will never came to SU!! Either because where it is, not a solid winning program or at the bottom of a conference. Yes go after realistic talent. Stop this ask 30/40 for ten. These players and their influences are not stupid!! Be smart and offer solid talent at a respectable number!!
My response to Terry’s critizism of the Orangemen not getting any top recruits from NJ has always been to be patient and good things will staret to happen.

Ellison told the paper he plans to visit Syracuse “over the next couple weeks, or so.” He added he is in frequent contact with cornerback Dwon Walker and linebacker Jordan Fox, teammates at St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, as well as athlete Dontae Strickland; and “all four of us like Syracuse.”
Russell MacEachern,Malone what do you think? Is this the year syracuse breaks down the damn gates to the State of NJ.

You can ask…they have to agree to come… We’re not a high profile program! I get what your saying..it’s a balance. Still believe we have to
have the kids believe there is lots of interest. Lots of buzz..something is changing . Of course then the has to be change. Let’s see who Shafer gets. The candidates are a step up from the past…in the end can he start getting size and speed?
So far he has been a pleasant surprise!
I recently went up/down and east/west in the NE area for each state either Top 10(top 5 at times NY, Mass, Conn) to Top 50, (NJ, Maryland, Pa and DC) for HSFB talent. The interest is rare for good talent for SU!! I’m not saying no way, but our new NJ guy is just that new and really no difference as of yet. Matter of fact Maryland/DC area look more promising than NJ!! Ton of talent in Maryland. For years SU got talent from that area and DC, and lately SU has not tried there much as of yet!!
Cuse17 Pleasant surprise??? Where?? SU depth is better, but not mid-level ACC yet. 6-6 would be a good record, but boring as hell all over again!! The schedule is a killer!! but the talent level just doesn’t keep up with it yet!!
Cuse17 most players shot gunned by HCSS say they are visiting. How many times have WE heard that and a no show. I do feel for HCSS. Because the recruiting season is a huge frigging show and the players know that and play it like a drum. Davis might be a surprise if he signs, but as of this year so far the sun is out and that is pleasant, but lack of pure talent HONESTLY interested in SUFB is still lacking. But its early. Love HCSS, but after a 6-6 season is not a pleasant surprise its adequate at best!! Please!!! I’m tired of 6-6 seasons and this season looks like another 6-6 with excellent play from SUFB team!! Sorry HOMERS just a frustrated fan that is tired of the slap on the backs of this program yet still at a .500 season!! Enough already!!! Time to move on to a better pasture!! Please pass the sun screen!!
