Terrel Hunt is the man right now.
The future is bright for the Syracuse quarterback, who led the Orange to a Texas Bowl victory in his first season under center. It was not an easy start for him. Drew Allen won the quarterback battle at the beginning of the season, but Hunt took over and was 6-4 as the starter.
At times he struggled with consistency. He is a mobile quarterback, but did not always pass the ball with accuracy. This is a new season for him, and the expectations are higher. The spring game on Saturday was the chance to see how he improved since the Texas Bowl, and it’s a sign of what he needs to work on before SU opens the 2014 season on August 29 at the Dome against Villanova.
Here’s the good news: Hunt was 12-for-15 passing and threw for 95 yards in one half of play in the spring game. The passing is the most important number there. Although he was solid at times, he struggled to be consistent. That is his key moving forward into next season. Part of his struggles last season was the group of young receivers. They were inexperienced, but showed the potential to be the next big names on offense. They took over for two of SU’s big-name receivers – Alec Lemon and Marcus Sales. Now, the receivers are more experienced and that helps Hunt be better.
Ashton Broyld and Brisly Estime were Hunt’s main men. He always connects well with the two of them. One of Hunt’s big flaws last year was the lack of a go-to receiver. SU fans can expect Hunt to work with all of the receivers before the season starts to make sure he is on the same page, but having one or two go-to receivers always has a benefit in certain game situations.
It is especially more important for Hunt to work on finding that go-to receiver because the running back situation is very unknown. Syracuse has Prince-Tyson Gulley and George Morris II as its top two guys, as well as Devante McFarlane, who could have a very good season in certain situations. Gulley and Morris have little starting experience, so it could take time for those two to get used to working in the starting role – whoever it may be. This makes it especially important that Hunt finds good connections with his receivers, whether it be wide receivers or a tight end.
He comes into this season much more confident than any point last season. He knows he is the starting quarterback for the season and right now the face of the program. He experiences winning that very few first-year quarterbacks have the opportunity to be a part of. Syracuse became bowl eligible in the last six seconds of its game against Boston College – he completed the pass that put SU ahead. He also led the team to a victory against a Big Ten team in the Texas Bowl.
Confidence is high right now for the young quarterback, and the motivation and momentum he has moving forward is likely to bring good things to the program this season.

I’m more interested in Hunt being the ARM of the team than the face.
I think McDonald will have the WRs stronger overall as a unit which will help Hunt in the passing game.
Hunt still needs work on the deep ball- if we are at least respectable in that area, the CUSE offense could be dynamite- IF ADAM CAN COACH the OLINE!!
We have 4 experienced backs..a QB that started 9 previous games in an offense suited to his talents. That Central Mich game is going to tell us alot!
our wr’s are much better and alot deeper once the freshman class moves in. this offense will be better in my opinion. i’m very confident with our recevers. if everyone stays healthy i think we might surprise some people this upcoming season.

I just picked game 2 cuz the “bugs” in game 1(hopefully) get worked out and CMICH might be a step up in competition. We’ll start to see some patterns develop…strengths weaknesses..improvements like throwing a deep ball completion.

His performance during the Texas Bowl(19/29 passes 188 yds and 15 rushes for 74 yds) won him the MVP,was less than spectacular and was average at best. If it wasn’t for Brisley Estime returning a punt for 70 yards late in the game Syracuse would have lost.
I hope Coach Shafer is smart enough to realize that if he wants to win at least eight games that he can’t rest/compromise the 2014 season on that performance alone. From what I saw during the Spring Football Game,Terrel hasn’t improved his mechanics enough to be the starting QB,still directs/telegraphs his throws,doesn’t have a quick release and he hasn’t improved his speed.
To be very honest “orangeinva” I see him getting replaced during the 1st half of the Villanove game.
I know that I haven’t made his supporters happy,but that’s just how I see it.

Maybe 2014 is the year Syracuse implements/uses the 2 QB system.
We have 4 QB’s in camp with the 5th arriving on campus in June,competing to become the starter for the Orangemen in August.
After reading a post by Brent Ax this morning he seems to think Austin Wilson is the odd man out because of him being a pocket passer? I guess the coaching staff likes the running QB which makes no sense to me because the NFL wants the “pocket passing” QB. Syracuse QB coach Tim Lester said today that AJ Long is further along than what he expected and showed some interest in him after the spring scrimmage game. Does than mean AJ is in the lead for the #2 spot?
All that one needs to do is compare the careers of Peyton Manning to Donovan McNabbs,Mike Vick or RGIII’s to see what they prefer in the NFL.
If things do work out the way the press is predicting,Terrel Hunt as the starter and AJ Long as the #2 man,then I look for two of the QB’s Austin Wilson and Mitch Kimble to transfer out and that’s going to be a shame. It’s my opinion that at this point in time Wilson and Kimble are the best 2 QB’s on the team. When Alin Edouard arrives on campus this summer I can see everything as we know it now thrown in the air and the competition for starting QB getting down right nasty. When it’s over with and the starter’s are announced,I still see two of the QB’s transferring out.
Ron..if Hunt gets replaced in the first half of the NOVA game due to poor performance…I’ll come wash your car!!
I hope that Wilson is the #2 qb..kind of like a relief pitcher//change of pace.
