As previously discussed, the 2013-2014 Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team was weakened by its lack of a pure shooter.  CJ Fair had to be on top of his game and spread the ball to give the Orange an opportunity to win, and Trevor Cooney had to hit some shots to keep the Orange in the game and spark its offense.
In the Orange’s first NCAA Tournament game against Western Michigan, fans got a glimpse of the team that won 25 games in a row to start the season.  Fair shot relatively well, hitting 6-of-13 shots from the field to contribute 14 points.  Cooney shot well, hitting 4-of-8 three pointers to lead the team with 18 points.  Ennis was also smooth from the floor, hitting 7-of-11 shots.  The team hit nearly 50 percent of its attempts; a very high number for this team and its confidence was reflected in its defense.  The Orange finished the game with 77 points and a 24-point victory in its opening game.
Everything that the Orange did right in their first game, however, was its downfall in the third round (second game) contest against the Dayton Flyers.  The problems, of course, started with Fair’s inconsistency.  He was 4-for-14 from the field and turned the ball over three times.  Cooney was equally horrendous, finishing 1-for-6 with no three pointers.
In fact, the Orange didn’t make a three-pointer as a team.  It was the first time in 665 games that the Orange didn’t hit a shot from behind the arc.  And when the Orange doesn’t connect from behind the arc, it becomes harder and harder for it to score in general.  Syracuse only scored 18 points in the first half.
Not only did Syracuse not score from behind the arc, but they also were only 1-for-19 from outside the paint.  Ennis, alone, was 0-for-8 from outside of the key.  Dayton, on the other hand, was 10-for-21 from outside of the paint, including seven three pointers.
Syracuse certainly had won games in which they had shot poorly from outside the paint, but the difference was the lack of transition game.  Despite forcing 14 Dayton turnovers, the Orange only managed six points off of turnovers.  Syracuse averaged 16.5 points off of turnovers per game during the season.  The team wasn’t able to run in the open floor, and it wasn’t hitting jump shots, which left only the paint – a one-dimensional attack.
Syracuse enters the offseason with a lot of question marks.  They have two top recruits coming in and have two seniors graduating.  They have two more players who are considered on the fence for leaving for the NBA Draft.  One thing is certain, however: the Orange needs to find some shooters to work into the rotation next season if they want to correct their mistakes from this one.

Shooting is alot of it…but so is passing and a crisply run half court offense. For years..except for last year with MCW/KJOE…the orange HC offense has been slow and predictable..spacing suffers…we dribble and dribble and dribble some more. If you get a chance watch Virginia and Florida and the pace they play at offensively.
And I guess it’s to be expected….we’ve got a coach that has been there over 40 years..we’ve got the top ass’t who has been there 20+ years along with GMAC and Autry who are alums– so where do the new ideas/blood come from?
But so far as shooters are concerned next year… Ennis will be better/ Grant will be better..I think Patterson will give Cooney a run for the money..Gbinije will be better.
The shooters will be there..the question is will the offense be there that will generate quality shots? And will it be run at a pace that is hard to defend?
Final thought..Coleman in place of Keita and Xmas a year older will make our inside game better offensively..which in turn should create more open outside shots.
If Grant and Ennis return, the only thing holding this team back from an ACC championship and a FF run is coaching and player development.
Coleman’s return is fine, but he is a non scorer. He has no inside scoring capability so far. Ennis and Grant may be gone Pro. That leaves CJFair and Keita graduating. 4 out of 5 equals a whole new team. Cooney stays and could be another weakness in 2015 as he was in 2014. The article is right. Currently we have no 3 point shooter worth a damn. Unless we recruit another good 3-pointer we are lost next year. Cooney coming off the bench for a breather is fine but we cannot depend on him as we did this year. Thus whole new 2015 team
What this team “lacked was a CONSISTENT SHOOTER.When you consider that the two considering leaving for the NBA were among the least consistent scorers its amazing that this possibility is real and possible I love both players BUT neither has an offensive game to get excited about . Grant is a spin and dunk while Ennis occasionally pops a long jumper but even in the tournament couldn’t finish near the basket with his floater Nether is going to get those shots in the pros without having the ball rammed back ino their faces.
Well guys there’s a lot of information in an article posted on syr.com today telling us that Tyler Ennis has decided to turn pro. I personaly think it’s a mistake and I think he’s going realize it when it’s too late. In an article posted a couple of days ago they interviewed Pearl Washington and the comment was made that he loved playing in front of the big crowds at the dome while the one thing he regretted the most was leaving Syracuse University early for the pros. Tyler Ennis should have read his story or better yet should have talked to him man to man.
The other tid bit of news in today’s article said that both CJ Fair and Tyler Ennis decided early that they were going pro and started playing for themselves, building their personal stock for the pros and shutting Jeremy Grant down from scoring.
I believe that to be a reason for the decline in victories after the 25-0 start. I guess CJ Fair and Tyler Ennis are not the team players that we all thought they were.
Help is on the way at the point. With Ron Patterson sharing time with Kalieb Joseph,Syracuse will do fine. Let’s not forget Chris McCullough who people are already comparing to Carmelo Anthony.
Look forward to the class of 2015 and see that Syracuse has the best player in the country(5* Malachi Richardson
out of NJ)who play’s point guard and 4* PF Tyler Lydon that’s already committed to Syracuse.
Syracuse is also going after 5* 6’10” 235 lb Center/Forward Thomas Bryant out of Huntington Prep Huntington West Virginia that’s really high on syracuse University.
I’m trying to tell everyone that we’re not going to miss Tyler Ennis. I wish him well but one day down the road, when there is no more basketball,he’s going to remember the day he left Syracuse University with out graduating. That’s when he’ll remember what a fool he was listening to all of those reportes that talked all season long telling him and everyone who listened just how good he was and realize they didn’t know whart the hell they were talking about back then.
DA that’s the last you’ll hear anything from me about the 2013/2014 basketball season.
