A round-table discussion between staff members from The Fizz covering all the commitments and signings from National Signing Day 2014. Kevin Fitzgerald, Brendan Glasheen and Zephan Mayell break down each of the new additions. Hear from a handful of recruits from the 2014 class.
The guys start with the offensive side. The Orange adds a boatload of play-makers and immediate impact wide receivers. SU brought in 18 3-star recruits and the lone 4-star, KJ Williams, stuck with the Orange for the entire ride.
Fitz, Sheen and Zeph then dissected the defensive recruits. 7 DBs and 4, three-star linebackers are coming up On the Hill. The mature Zaire Franklin and possibly the “next Shamarko” Rodney Williams feature the 15 defensive guys brought in.
And finally, The Fizz Editor, Damon Amendolara, helps us finish out the day. DA gives us his take on the class overall, the importance of recruiting the best talent and how the Scott Shafer and company ERA has a bright future ahead.

Considering how well Shafer and his staff last year in recruiting when Marrone chose the worse time for our program to bail and what Shafer has done for this batch of recruits we can only think that the 2015 class will be beyond the thinking of mere mortals who are long used to the failures of the past. I see more 4 star early rated players coming here and the final rating of that class to elevate substantially.
Moore bailing doesn’t help either!! Real poor timing and doesn’t make the CUSE star shine bright either with the new recruits. Got to get an WR coach with a resume’!! HCSS has some WR players now. But at the same point the WR’s lately have shown nothing and Moore was the coach!! I heard he was tired of the recruiting nonsense. But I thought he was put in the NYS/LI/NJ area because of his roots. Well it didn’t work for him there!! Good riddance to him if true!! And HCSS get someone who wants to be here instead of being with the dougie loser team!!
I see my ranting’s really didn’t scare any players away from SU did it!! Sorry about that!!! LOL!!

I want to take the oppurtunity to congratulate the womens Basketball team on “destroying” Virginia Tech last night 73-48,improving their overall to (17-6 6-4 ACC).
I looked at the remaing schedule and figure they should finish the season (21-8 10-6 ACC)headed into the ACC League Championship Tournament and getting their 3rd straight invitation to the NCAA Tournament.
Great job ladies and good luck for the remainder of the season.
In 2009/2010 the incoming class of 2-3* and N/R athletes came to Syracuse as 17-18-19 year old kids to play the game of football and are leaving as young men with degrees all having dreams of playing in the NFL. Some will full fill that dream and for those who don’t,I hope by staying in school and graduating and getting your degree will help you become successful in your pursuit of happiness.
They came and banded together as a team proving to all that a 2*-3*or N/R player could play the game as well as anyone. Against all odds they overcame adversity/negativity and went to 3 bowl games over the last 4 years,and for their efforts I labeled these players as our “Modern Day Titans”. Coach Yoast would be proud of this unit. Kansas St,West Virginia and Minnesota will remember forever the night they played the Syracuse Orangemen.
So with heart felt gratitude I want to wish these young men the very best and hope they get the best that life has to offer.

RON RON RON time to have your urine checked again. NR/ 2 star players are not going to play as well as others(3/4/ and 5 star)-LMAO!!. Remember the Clemson, FSU and GT games and PSU/NW too!! What happened??? SU got clocked , by much better talent!! SU is improving-thank god!! But with its record of lower rated players recently shows there is much more work to be done!! This class is 52!! Better than the last 9 years, but don’t get fixated on that either. SU is not even close to the top 30 programs yet. Only better talent than your “as well as anyone” thinking will get SU up those charts and you know that!! HCSS has the program inching along. It just needs a push and this years class of better talent will help!!
dougie called SU for permission to talk to Moore. This traitor dougie just does not stop trying to hurt SU in some way. The dougie fans out there will say at least he waited until the day after LOI day. Come on, this this guy is nothing but a self described egotist-all for him!! The Jills will always be a stone in my shoe. Hell being a huge GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG-MAN fan I almost have to root for the Cowgirls/Yellowskins or Feagles when they play the JILLS!! OH god that hurts to say anyway!! DAMN!! LOL!!
HCSS in his interview said he offered 6 NYS kids and I believe him. He tried to get more home grown kid on the team!! I believe him, because you feel he heard us!! It sounded like the word got to him about that concern. But I also feel that Moore left because of the attitude of the NYS/NJ/LI area toward SU TOO!! SU in its successful years SU always had more than “TWO”
NYS/LI players on its recruited team that year!! Its still a mystery, but it also has to be solved quickly if SU is to improve!

I’m glad to see that you have your funny hat on today. “RON/RUSS and Malone!! The 3 CUSEkateers”!! That statement alone will make me laugh for the rest of the day.
Onto more serious thoughts. My comments wasn’t meant to say lets continue recruiting 2/3*/N/R players for the future. The class of 2014 shows me that were moving in the right direction as far as the recruiting goes.
I was saying Terry that this group of seniors that are graduating exceeded all expections and played their way to 3 bowl games and winning them. To me that looks like and smells like success to me. The players should be recognised and thanked for working hard and sticking together during their four years at Syracuse. I know Terry that the bowl games weren’t top tier bowls,but I do feel they will come over the next 2/3 years,but you just can’t overlook the fact that these players helped take Syracuse to 3 bowl games over the last four years. That was my message.
When I was typing that last message to post,I knew that I was going to get a response out of you today. Terry you never,never have to apolize to me for ranting and carrying on about your feelings about the program. You and I have had our spats/discussions over the years and personally I don’t want them to end. I’ve gotten to the point of understanding what it is that your trying to say,and will tell you that we both have alot in common. More than you’ll ever know kiddo,more than you’ll ever know.

I believe that Shafer could if he wanted too bring in another three to four recruits if necessary. If we have the room here are a few recruits that haven’t made a committment to anyone yet.

I’ve got to admit… Shafer continues to give me reason to believe. It’s not a great class but it’s the best We’ve had in a long time. Time will tell. If he continues to improve the talent..continues to coach them up.. We are on a real positive path. Won’t happen over night but I’m encouraged.
Now he needs the University behind him.. Upgrade the facilities, pay the coaches…support the student athletes. Build a reputation as a place to play…. The NY kids will be back!
I’m looking forward to being a more positive contributor next year…

I know from talking to the players that they love and respect him as their head coach. Your right in saying old Doc Gross and the university better get behind him, I’m afraid(if they don’t)in a couple three years he might be gone and we’ll be right back at the beginning again. We don’t need that to happen.

Ron The staff did this last year too. Its the shot gun method!! Blast away and hope and pray. I was really disappointed in the results like the list of 4 star players the staff gave us for 2014. If SU gets some great but, I’m getting tired of the promises with no real results!! But all in all the classes are improving and you can’t ask very much more. Only concern with this class is if some don’t qualify and I heard some are under border line!!
WTF!!!!!!!!!! PSABUSERU has a men’s hockey team(beautiful arena too) and the CUSE don’t. Just watch them beat the 10th ranked Michigan team. Thank you title 9 again!! Hockey is the perfect fit for SYRACUSE. Imagine the rivalries!! DAMN!!!
Terry, Cusecateer Malone here. SU and hockey would be a great mix! I’ve heard it said that with our geographic location alone, we’d be top ten in less than five years. That said, not much hockey in the ACC, so no real revenue upside. Don’t hold your breath. Going back to our earlier conversations about down state whoa, I won’t say Moore is the root of all problems, but NYPost reporter Zach Braziler openly gushed about Cuse being rid of him and how it would likely help in NYC after what he said. Grain of salt with this kid. He strikes me as misguided and angry, but it points to what we talked about earlier with the bad PR downstate.
BC=ACC hockey team does pretty well. Yes they have been around for awhile. I knew that about lack of ACC love towards hockey. But not all ACC do LAX either. SU hockey is still and always will be about Title 9!! I believe if the title 9 cleared up and $$$$ raised for SU’s OWN arena then maybe SU will be on the ice. Just imagine the rivals from just all over the state. Probably Cornell #1 and even now PSABUSERU too!! DAMN that sickens me that PSABUSERU has hockey and SU doesn’t!!
I heard the same!! That Moore was pissed at the attitude of some NYS/NYC and LI HS players!! He still has strong feelings for SU. I can’t say that for dougie!! But at the same time if the players dis ya I might want to go to. He did not really successfully turn talent from these areas SU’s way-is only 1/2 the problem. The other issue is just plain crap from sources that are hard to pull out of their holes!! And the people of know, know that too!! But they just won’t let it out so SU can get it back on track and recruit this area effectively!! It will hurt SU until at least it is found out why they just don’t respect the CUSE!! Someone has to man-up here!! A Long Islander friend of mine told me its about SU leaving the BIG EAST and old schoolers(?) just getting their bites in now!! He told me it will take time but they will get over it once SU gets back to where it was once!! Who knows??????????? Something it out there and I think Moore leaving won’t change a thing!! We’ll see!! But I got a strong feeling I won’t ever read about it in print or on my computer ever- why SU is not getting respect from these areas!! Man-up media!!
If we still had Wheatley we would get his son and war would still have Wheatley if the Bills weren’t bad and didn’t get a whole new coaching staff, so recruiting would be better and we would be climbing even faster on the way back if not the Bills just a weird thought
Initially I thought we over recruited secondary but Dawson is basically not part of this class (pray for his recovery) and Prater may not qualify apparently so it will workout

The womens Ice Hockey Team had a good weekend when on Friday they tied the 8/9 ranked Robert Morris Squad and on Saturday beating them 3-0 to improve their overall to 16-11-3.
The womens softball team opened their season this weekend traveling to Alabama for the Mardi Gras Tournament where they beat Austin Peay 9-0 and the 21/25 ranked UAB team in extra innings 3-2 Saturday evening,and Losing to the 20/21 ranked South Alabama squad 2-1 and 8-0. They finish the tournament with a game against Mcneese St. this afternoon.
Great job by both teams. Congratulations ladies.

Title 9 ruined a couple/three of the mens sports especially at Syracuse University. They stopped the wrestling program,coached by Olympic champions Gene Mills and Chris Campbell,and the mens swim team all for gender equality.
After President Kennedy was assassinated,the “hard core Feminist” started pushing for Gender Equality. Title 9 was one of the first results of that movement which led to the inclusion of women being drafted and fighting on the front lines in war time with the men.

You talk about SU not having a mens ice hockey team,what about having a mens baseball team?
Baseball was an appropriate victim of ROI and the meaning of “student athlete”. Hockey can’t join the ACC as there is none. How much H E double hockey sticks (pun intended) would be raised if SU diverted ACC money, football money, to non-ACC hockey? Not pretty I imagine. I wonder if wrestling will come back with more money. Baseball’s return scares me because I feel it’s a fools errand, especially given our geographic location and the league we’re in. If I remember right, our men’s swim team was doing pretty well at the time of their demise.
I don’t expect Moore’s leaving has much effect on recruiting, positive or negative. I see NO correlation between the Bills being bad and our recruiting. We lost 5 guys to Marrone leaving. I wanted them more than anyone. I think our recruiting is stronger now anyway. Wheatley was a great recruiter. Losing he and Anselmo hurt most. Losing his son because he’s not here is not going to break us either. We are on the outside looking in, but not out of it. I wouldn’t hold a man back for one recruit. Nobody will have better insight on our program, and if the kid doesn’t come, he probably wouldn’t have even if his dad were on staff.
Malone I think Anselmo is totally over rated!! What REAL talent did he bring some but way more got away!! But Wheatley was a gem of a recruiter!! Hockey/Baseball are far hotter than Swimming or Wrestling for college sports!! I’m pipe dreaming I know, but the ONLY new sport fit for SU is HOCKEY-period!! How come BC still has hockey because they want it. SU can only get HOCKEY if it wants it and cares little what the ACC thinks(unless the ACC grandfathered hockey in at BC). But do not forget title 9 too!! It just blows my brain that PSABUSEDU has hockey in that redneck corn field of a place and SU with its hockey traditions all over these near by places has no hockey!! GEZ!!

Your right about the swim team back then. I believe that we were leading the Big East in swimming when it was cut. The top two swimmers on the team were from Bosnia and got picked to represent their country in the Olympics that year. I wanted to sponser them and was told by the University that I had to send the money down to the Bosnian Embassy in Washington DC. I decided that it wasn’t that important a thing to do and didn’t follow through giving them money to enjoy themselves while competing.
Swimming sounds like baseball as Malone said a fool’s errand! Leading the BE in swimming? Who really knew or cared in NY?Sounds more suited to Cali or Tex/Fla than upstate NY but thats just my opinion.Wrestling/Hockey now is a different story as we fit the mold and NY/NJ LOVES wrestling and hockey to a lesser degree(at HS level)! I think BC is happy and entrenched in HE and UConn is a new member but thats a State U….in this economy with FB needing funds right now is it even feasable? I agree with Malone and baseball isn’t here either IMO.

We had a respectable closing in on becoming a powerful wrestling team at Syracuse led by Olympic/world champions Gene Mills and Chris Campbell. Gene Mills did every thing possible and fought the good fight to keep the program and lost. The only reason I mentioned the (mens)swim team was it was another program cut due to Title 9 becoming the law of the land.
Mens Hockey and wrestling teams should make great additions that would be welcomed by everyone.
Woman on the frontlines in combat?Not many men today could deal with FL combat!Unreal…I havent kept in the loop but I can’t even imagine the marine corps men and woman training together as hand to hand instruction is too “intimate” and rough or have we become that “soft” as a civilization? Isn’t the idea/reasoning to protect the woman and children in war/conflict?

I think (OLB) Frank newman was the kid who played LB and was switched to QB in his senior year. A picture of him with his father in the Post Standard dressed in Syracuse outfits led me to believe this kid was coming to us. What happened????

Did Shafer max out with the 25 recruits for the class of 2014? Is there room for a couple three more that he can add to the roster?
I don’t think there is room for any more, but on Cotton, I don’t believe he qualified and has committed to a JUCO. I beleive the staff will keep tabs on him. That said, he is smallish by my standards (so you know what Terry would think). I like his hard hitting, but at 5’9″ I think, that is a little short. FS at best? I don’t think he’s fast/quick enough to be a cover guy. He listed himself as a safety/LB prospect. 5’9″ isn’t an LB in the ACC. Even the great Sam Mills played his college ball at Monmouth College I think due to his stature.(NJ guy, see what I did there?)
5’11” is my expected smallest height with the rare exception for LB or SS with 220lbs at LB and 205 at S. Man do I miss the FB season guys!!!
