The Coveted A-Word: Athlete Treevon Prater Visits Syracuse This Weekend

Syracuse should sweep up athlete Treevon Prater to flesh out the Orange secondary next year.

As we near National Signing Day, Syracuse has another name to add to the list of visitors this weekend.

via Yahoo! Sports

Treevon Prater, a WR/DB out of East Saint Louis, Illinois, will come up to visit the Hill with three other prospective recruits: Denzel Ward, Steve Ishmael and Zeek Rodney.

Prater is committed to Western Michigan but only as a soft verbal. The Orange will have a chance to entice the Midwest recruit to look into switching his commitment. Prater’s position is listed by ESPN and Rivals as the highly coveted “A-word”: Athlete.

Athletes can be the most valuable recruits to a program such as Syracuse. The versatility that a recruit who can play multiple positions brings to the table proves vital when there is a major need during a given season. Ashton Broyld was listed as an “athlete” when he came to SU and took a receiving role when the team needed more weapons to throw the ball to. Prater runs a 4.82 40-time and played more safety than cornerback last season.

A 3-star recruit, Prater could join a solid 2014 secondary class. Rodney Williams is the only safety committed, while Lamar Dawson, Naesean Howard and Cordell Hudson have all given verbal pledges. DeAndre Smith has been heavily involved in Prater’s late interest in the Orange. At 6’1”, 178 lbs., Prater will have a shot to earn some early playing time, especially due to his flexibility among different positions.

As we have discussed, Shafer needs to grab some lineman commits to balance out the 2014 recruiting class. Aaron Roberts is the only offensive lineman committed right now, while Chris Slayton stands alone on the defensive line. That is what makes Denzel Ward’s and Zeek Rodney’s visits even more important. In fact, they are the only two linemen who have scheduled official visits to Syracuse before NSD.

A major positive for recruiting this weekend is that a large portion of recruits who are already committed to SU will be on campus. K.J. Williams, Alin Edouard, Parris Bennett, Zaire Franklin and Naesean Howard are scheduled to visit the Salt City this weekend.

In a few days, Scott Shafer will try to add the finishing touches to his first real recruiting class as head coach. Some of the best talent arguably is still on the table for Syracuse to scoop up. Will SU take the next step in recruiting by locking up sought-after recruits or struggle to make progress?

is his 40 time correct 4.82? That is real slow for an athlete recruit?

  2. Ron Avatar

Syracuse will jump into the mid to high 40’s in the national team rankings if all of these recruits commit to the Orange on NLI day, making some fans who worry about those things,HAPPY,HAPPY,HAPPY.

Go get them coach, bring them home to the Orangenation.

jamesvillecuse you are right 4.82 is SLOWWWWWWWWWWWW!! For a safety also!!! A lost here wouldn’t hurt. No wonder why he has WMU verbal. But his High School has always had real good talent coming from it in the Mid-West area- a top program!

RON your far off the 40’s even though you know how I feel about a higher class rank and SU improvements!! These are mainly low 3 stars and such, so movement up might happen but no means jet like!!

Interesting about the talk on new stadium and such. I’ll still stick with updating the Dome and move the SUBB program to a new site!! Only 50-60% of the seats at Dome are any good for BB!!

DO not forget the kids at PSABUSEDU!! THE NCCAA DID!!

  5. Ron Avatar

If we can get these recruits to commit to the orange,I see a new t-shirt getting printed.

On the front of it will say “Cuse on our way to recovery” or “who’s driving the bus”?. And on the back we have Coach Shafer driving a bus with some of these players and current players faces coming out of the windows. Signing Willie Nelsons “On the Road Again”,can’t wait to be on the road again.

  6. Ron Avatar

Edit–should be singing On the road again not signing on the road again.

    sorry guy’s

The ball and prospects will be in the hands of the best recruiters the Orange have this weekend. I fully expect at the very least two big time verbals. I really hope thatWard and Ishmael are among those saying the magic words ” I’m coming to Syracuse University.”

    @Terry;

I agree Terry, there is nothing wrong with the dome that we have now, building a new 40,000 seat stadium to house football, basketball, hockey and concerts (DOWNTOWN)is ridiculous. It’s telling me that the City of Syracuse is broke and is looking at ways to generate revenue at the universities expense.

My thoughts are, leave the dome where it is now and upgrade if needed. If we’re going to build a new building then build a new 36,000 seat stadium for basketball and hockey only and put it over to skytop where you have enough land to put it on.

Look the taxpayers of New York State are already paying for the new stadiums built down in NYC and the renovations that were needed with the Buffalo Stadium. I sure as hell don’t want to have my taxes raised again for a new stadium that really isn’t needed. for the people who think the dome is outdated,go to Florida’s campus and take a good hard long look at the “Swamp”. That’s old and it’s a beautiful building. I don’t think their ready anytime soon to tear that down and build a new stadium in it’s place to appease a few fans who probably doesn’t go there anyways. Stick with what you have Syracuse,I enjoy the seats that I’ve set in over last 20 years. Going downtown to watch a game just isn’t going to excite me and probably will force me to finally give up my season tickets.

If there was a new stadium , with a retractable roof , Syracuse would be on a circuit to hold the lacrosse final 4. That includes women’s and the lower divisions as well, which is a huge tourist draw. NCAA won’t hold it indoors in the Dome, but would like to hold it in Syracuse, which, with the Iroqois Nation capital being Onandaga is the true home of lacrosse.

  10. Carlton Avatar

Why in the hell would the state pay for a new stadium for a private school? That’s just not going to happen.

  11. JB Avatar

Thomas Holley is visiting this weekend and he is going to go Orange to join the elite fraternity of Syracuse defensive linemen; Dwight Freeney ,Chandler and Arthur Jones and soon Jay Bromley. All first class players and men who were educated at Syracuse University.

  14. TnT Avatar
    TnT

    @JB

How do you know he is visiting? Or are you just screwing with people?

  15. JB Avatar

TnT , Read it on Syracuse.com. Seemed legit. I’m sure guys take their free trips.

  16. jamesvillecuse Avatar
    jamesvillecuse

Holley already made his official visit so I think the odds are slim to none he visits.

  17. TnT Avatar
    TnT

Do you have a link JB? Also, Holley took an unofficial this past summer.

  18. JB Avatar

TnT,I read it on the comment section of Steve Ishmeal story on Syracuse.com. He is friends of many of the guys who played high school football in the City. Like Al Cornelius,Wayne Williams, Ryan Sloan,Wayne Morgan,Omari Palmer,Ivan Foy,JAY BROMLEY,Brandon Reddish,Devante MacFarlane, Jeremiah Kobena and especially Terrel Hunt. These are his boys , he should lead them.

  19. Malone Avatar
    Malone

Holley is not visiting, and that should not surprise us. He is probably back to deciding, but its between 3 schools, PSU, OSU, and Fla. New stadium seems like a bad idea even if there was no Dome to consider. Too many cooks. Crunch Hockey? City, County, and State? There is no money so the gov’t would penny pinch it down to wasted money (spend $300 mil instead of $500 mil and get a vanilla bldg. that suits nobody well). Ron, what stadiums in NYC are NY taxpayers paying for?

  20. Malone Avatar
    Malone

Prater is bringing his current high school teammate Kyron Watson for the visit. Watson is a Kansas commit, but a heck of an LB prospect. I am not sure about the speed issue, but this is a big reason we are looking at him.
JB, I am under the impression the NCAA does not want the lax finals played in a college stadium, especially one that would create such a huge home team advantage. This is why the game rotates between Foxboro and the Linc. Gone are the days of championships at Rutgers or Maryland.

  21. JB Avatar

Malone, Are you saying that Holley is too good to play at Syracuse? Because that’s how you and all the other supposed “in the loop” people on all the other Orange fan sites sound. It is a very defeatist position that creats the impression in the minds of guys like Holley that we’re not worthy of consideration. I think Syracuse would be the best place for him to play. He will go to the front of the line and get unending support from the fans and the alumni base.

  22. jamesvillecuse Avatar
    jamesvillecuse

Holley doesn’t want Syracuse so not a defeatist position! I want kids who want to be at Syracuse these NYC kids like the bigger schools and they earned that right. If you get you football info from the Sub Standard your never gonna be in the “loop”

  23. JB Avatar

I sift thru every site I can find. In regards to Holley. Penn St has a new coach, their 4th in 3 years. Can’t make him think there’s much stability there. Florida’s coach is on the hot seat,if he has another bad year he’s gone. OSU, he might as well redshirt with all the players ahead of him. Syracuse is still in play with this guy and if he were to commit to the Orange it would be a gamechanger. He can change the perception of the program.

  24. Malone Avatar
    Malone

Wow, is this the same site where I am often called a Homer?! JB there is an enormous difference between being a realist and being defeatist. If Holley had taken an OV to Cuse like he did to PSU, OSU, or Florida, I would say we have a shot, but he never even accepted a free trip to our fine Universtiy. To me that is a pretty strong statement. Your very sound logic about teh spotlight, and playing time does not seem to resonate with him, or others who think they are bigger than the programs they commit to. think the 100,000 fans at every home game aren’t going to treat him like the 25,000 fans for SU if he lives up to his own expectations? If he said he wasn’t going to OSU (where the coach that recruited him to PSU in the first place was just hired) because he wasn’t good enough to start right away or become a star, then HE’s being defeatist, and I don’t want him. I am not the one saying he’s too good for Syracuse, he is.

  25. Terry Avatar
    Terry

Hey Malone join the club!! Maybe your working off your homer attire!! See if you question SU or its moves they’ll jump all over you. Stand your ground and become a anti-homer. I’ll teach ya!! LOL!!

  26. jamesvillecuse Avatar
    jamesvillecuse

lot of Cuse football fans seem to think we use to be a top program and consistently brought in top 25 classes, hell one guy even said we had the #4 recruiting class one year, this is not true we recruited 2 and 3 star players with a few 4 star players. This is how it will always be we will never reach the level of the basketball program except for a rare year like 87 but they will not be consistent national title contenders!

  27. JB Avatar

Look who’s supporters you Malone, troll city. THolley’s commitment has to be soft at this point. If you can tell me what an 18 person is going to do your smarter than me.I do think that he and his advisors should consider that at a big school the pipeline player development connections get preferential treatment , so he better be twice as good as those 4 and 5 star players. At Syracuse he will get the preferential treatment.

  28. jamesvillecuse Avatar
    jamesvillecuse

if you are looking for an argument maybe you should stick to syracuse.com? Holley is not coming to the CUSE he will not visit again! Move on like the coaches have. I pay for my info I suggest you do the same at cusenation.com

  29. jamesvillecuse Avatar
    jamesvillecuse

proving you are wrong further Holley just committed to Florida!!! Guess where I heard that cusenation.com

  30. JB Avatar

You cup half empty people take it as some great affirmation when your right. It’s the easy road to take , telling people that they will fail at difficult things.

  31. Malone Avatar
    Malone

How is being right also being cup half empty? You are the one that comes off defeatist with that comment JB. Being honest is not being half full or half empty and it is definitly not telling people they will fail at difficult things. When it comes to SU I am quite an optomist. The reality is, we “failed” a long time ago with Holley and in June through August when he was considering us and came up for the unofficial, I was the biggest chearleader out there, which is why I find your comments so funny. He sent the message that we were out a long time ago. I am not being negative if I tell you we didn’t make the cut AFTER we didn’t make the cut. I am sorry you were not aware of his intentions. With Holley, the writing was on the wall. There’s no shame in being right, especially when the kid in question has been fair in letting his opinions be known. You want to be optomistic about a potential flip in the aftermath here? be optomistic about re-flipping Cabinda. You want optomism for the future? Wheatly was seen as a heavy PSU lean because of Larry Johnson. Now that LJ is at OSU, his Michigan dad may just push him in another direction. Take hope in that. Holley was not coming here even before he visited. I got hope after, because he said he was impressed, but if it was so easy to impress him, doesn’t that tell you what he thought of us as a real option? If you can only go up in his opinion, what does that tell you about where you are? We took our shot and it didn’t work out. No shame in that. We’ll get one, just not him.

  32. Malone Avatar
    Malone

    *optimistic. Sorry.

  33. JB Avatar

OK Malone , I get what your saying. But even after he has committed to FLa I still look at him as a prodigal son that would be welcome back to the family. As I said before Florida has their deeply connected recruiting pipelines. When they groom guys and develop them and direct them to Florida and then some New York guy takes his spot, don’t come looking to them for other players. That’s what he’s up against.

  34. jamesvillecuse Avatar
    jamesvillecuse

plus you didn’t even know if your info was correct but you defended it anyways? The perception of the program is getting better but still not great and this will only change with winning. Hell Holley’s mentor in this was Ishtaq Williams dad, both his parents went to SU, he still didn’t recommend that either kid go to SU. I agree with you on why he should of chose SU but it doesn’t matter what we think. Be patient we will start getting a couple of these kids.

  35. JB Avatar

Ishaq’s father probably doesn’t want Holley to go to Syracuse because it will show how wrong he was directing his son to go to Notre Dame, where he continues to be mired in the depth chart. Sad really when you think how he would have been a celebrated star for the Orange.

  36. Malone Avatar
    Malone

Agree with this. Sean Williams is no friend to SU (or most of these kids he mentors if you consider his results). Very sad that he is an SU alum and he holds the school’s feet to the fire for not being Alabama rather than trying to help the kids, and the school that helped mold him. Was this guy a Newhouse grad? He seems to be an apologist, like many SU broadcasters can be. Works to hard to be objective and unbiased. I think HCSS is and should distance our program from the likes of this guy. Rebuild NYC recruiting from the foundation. Take Mr. Williams out of the equation.

  37. Malone Avatar
    Malone

*too hard. Damn I’m off my game today.

  38. Ron Avatar

After Ishaq committed to Notre Dame, someone had asked his father as to why he decided his son there?

Do any of you remember his response to that question? He responded that he wanted his son to become a house hold name recognized by everyone.

Do you realize that he’s getting his wish? Everyone here is talking about Williams. Let’s forget the damn guy, stop talking about him and maybe he goes the way of human excrement when flushing your toilets.
