Daryl Gross is rattling some cages about the ACC’s scheduling, and (shockingly) not everyone thinks he has the standing to do that. He’s sent a memo to the ACC powers asking that the league goes to a 9-game conference schedule, then mandating the other five opponents would be played the following year.
Naturally, it all looks a little “new kid in school wants better playground” for SU.
Here’s Dan Wolken (@DanWolken), who covers college football/basketball for USA Today:
“Couldn’t Syracuse have waited, like, at least 15 minutes after joining the ACC before complaining about the league’s scheduling?”
“If you want “fair” conference schedules, go back to 10-team leagues where everybody plays everybody – like the Big 12. Otherwise, shut up”
“Money grab, money grab, money grab – but let’s complain because we don’t play in Atlanta enough! Can’t have it all, folks”
Personally, the timing of Gross’ lobbying is poor, but his idea is correct (which sounds like most of Daryl’s problems in the past). If the ACC wants to be the strongest conference it can be, utilizing its strengths should be a priority. As much as the ACC wants to be taken seriously as a football conference, it’s still behind the SEC, Pac-12, Big 12 and B1G. Even with the potential national champion, it feels like there’s a few haves (FSU, Clemson, VT, Miami) and the majority of have nots (everyone else).
So to help the have-nots (basketball schools who want to build their football program like Syracuse, Duke, NC State, UNC, Wake, Louisville) and have nothings (BC), allowing those teams the greatest exposure in markets like Boston, Miami and Atlanta makes sense. Playing in Florida and Georgia specifically helps recruiting in those states. Playing in big markets helps build brands. Playing in Miami and Atlanta is valuable for SU because of the alumni bases there (and for plenty of other ACC schools).
The misfire Gross has is asking for the annual rivalry games to be a victim of this new scheduling, which is short-sighted and self-serving. Sure, Syracuse-BC might not be a great football matchup. But Miami-FSU is important for the whole conference. UNC-NC State is vital for those two programs. They should not be sacrificed, and don’t have to be.
The 9-game conference schedule is a good one. The non-con matchups are normally nothing but filler anyway. Does SU need Tulane AND Wagner on the slate? But keep the annual rivalry games, while still making sure you play the other 5 schools as soon as possible. The idea that SU won’t come back to Atlanta until 2027 (think about that – 14 years?!) is ridiculous.
Gross is on the right track. He just has a problem with timing. And that’s nothing new.

I am no fan of Gross and would change the AD asap were I the new Chancellor, but on this issue Gross is correct. He presents a cogent argument for a 9 game schedule. In addition, he is now an equal in the ACC hierarchic and as such he has every right to raise the issue as does every AD in the ACC. He is looking our for the CUSE as well as the ACC by doing so.
Agreed John. I think teh league sees us as an unproven upstart. My how short their memories are. Ask BC, VT, and Miami. We are not new to this stuff just because we’ve been down. We have been taking part in ACC meetings for a year prior to being made full memebers. I think Gross sat back and listened for a year and the schedule idea that came about this season (14 years between trips to Atlanta) is the result. Thanks in part to us, they have the most bowl eligible teams of any conference in history. They have what is now universally considered the toughest hoops conference in history. Lacrosse is stronger because we’re there. Our other non-revenue sports are bringing something extra to the table. I don’t see why he can’t contribute to the conversation.

What goes here??? In a weeks time 2 transfers!! Washington and Manley!! There are 3 reasons usually players transfer with dealing with the team not school!! One-does not show up at all in talent, two-was promised by staff whatever was promised and three-the chemistry that was in the players living room just did not cook well after time at SU!! I read and heard with my own eyes WASHINGTON was a player!! Even the current players feel Washington was the best kept secret at SU!! I heard or know nothing about Manley!! This is the kind of issues that could act like a carcinogenic and really effect a program negatively. Hell SU’s recruiting and depth are average or below average now!! As of now SU is rated 69 nationally in FB recruiting!! HCSS better get his act in order now before this spreads. This is where playing freshman plays in!! Look SU for 4 games(I’ll count NW too) got the poop kicked out of them!! So what was regually on the field at these mentioned games showed nothing at at times and the score shows that=terrible. You just can’t lose talent you got to come to SU, unless the player is an A$$ or the STAFF is an A$$!! Get your act together HCSS or maybe the media can find something out about these transfers. After all last summer the media wrote about some Swans eggs!! But at the same time if the player wants to go let him. HCSS has said the same of recruits so it must also mean the same for currant players, if you don’t want SU-bye!! I agree!! But if talent is leaving=WHY WHY WHY!! SU is no factory afterall as of yet!! GEZZ!! Come on now!! SU does not need this at all!!

I’v heard the rumors of some pof the players being told that their scholarships wasn’t going to be renewed next semister forcing them to leave Syracuse. I come to conclusion that maybe they weren’t putting enough effort into the scholastic end of things and their grades were not good enough to keep them in school.
You and I have talked and are on the same page as far as playing the freshmen who are gifted enough to play. The lack of playing time might be the reason for the players leaving for a D11 school. I think a total of 4 players are leaving the team this year. I just hope that we’re not going through another year where we lose another 25 players like we did in Marrones first year here.
my concern is the investment in the football program has not began yet. lets get the indoor practice started, whats the holdup on this?? better football facilities=better football recruits. ron whats the word up on the hill with the indoor practice facility? when you have updated facilities the recruiting will take care of itself.

I see things are starting to happen with the new building. I took aspin today down by Manley and the old fiels is completely stripped down and is ready for the construction to start. They’ve moved some of the heavy equipment up to a Skytop parking lot. I think @Malone posted yesterday that the steel frame would be finished and the building enclosed by April or May and the building to be completed by August 2004.
I keep on saying that all we need to do is be a little patient. Putting a building up the size of the new IPF isn’t going to happen in a week or two.
So…besides this one clown of a “reporter”, who exactly were the other criticS with an “S”. I only count one.
And BTW, most if not all of the ACC AD’s agree with Gross that the divisions and scheduling need an overhaul.

Kike it or not, Gross is correct. The conference can do a better job of taking full advantage of its own markets. Swofford is a smart guy, and he probably respects Gross’ insight.
A lot of people put Gross down, but he’s only done one bad thing his whole career. He hired Greg Robinson. That was a big and costly mistake. Everything else he’s done a has been a home run.

I forgot to add that I remember when the picture of Gross shown here was originally published. I also remember seeing him that day, holding a phone to each ear (which is what he’s doing in the picture). This was just before GRob’s firing. Gross was taking heat from a couple of people at the same time on the calls, I am sure.
This is one of the only things I have ever thought Gross was correct about. The scheduling is terrible.
The Doctor is right on this one. But this kind of media info drives me crazy!! Why print this kind of stuff unless you’re not crazy about SU, PIT and Louisville showing up in the ACC-PERIOD!! To me and any others there’s issues out there FAR MORE IMPORTANT that the media can cover!! Like why SU can’t sign its own states best talent or even some of the best N.E. talent out there. Pitt/BC does???? WHERE ARE YOU MEDIA??? I guess stepping on toes on certain issues is not allowed!! But Doc, at the same time if you’re invited to a party for the first time you should not yell your entrance when you show up at the door. Good-bye Mr Smith!!! Look he did do a good job while at SU. But at the same time he didn’t impress at all during SU’s blow-outs this past year. Tulane/Wagner and a weakened WF and NCS (thank god for that we’ll take it) helped his stock(sort of). He really seldom makes it outside the line and has been caught easily from behind a number of times!! But can you blame him for leaving-hell no!! But at the same time he ain’t no Mr Williams of BC either. Not even close!! If he stayed he could of helped SU maybe build a foundation needed to succeed down the ACC road. The only thing I get so depressed about is the damn reporting that’s being done about tsyracuse Football. It seems russell that no matter how ell they do the reportes always throw in some of their favorite barbs,that down grade the team.
Let’s take a look at what Coach Shafer has accopmplished in his first year. Against all odds he’s taking syracuse to it’s 3rd bowl game over the last 4 years. THAT’S PRICELESS MY FRIEND,PRICELESS.
Let’s take a look at the recruiting for 2014 and 2015. He’s still after some good recruits for 2014 and for 2015,well I for one have noticed the efforts that’s being made for recruits in PA,CT,NJ and maybe NY. I believe Russell that he/someone has finally figured it out that we need to re-establish our foot print in a region that we dominated at one time.
Russell,we’re going after recruits that play for Don Bosco and Bergen Catholic HS’s. It was you,Malone,mademan and I who talked about the recruits in NJ last fall. Thanks to you,I’ll be doing the same thing next season.
I honestly believe that Shafer and crew is going to end the 2014 recruitng season by bringing in some really good recruits.

Hey, recruiting Twitter update. Along with Hallmon, Mike Johnson also seems to be a “Plan B” guy. I have heard from Hallmon’s mom that she thinks Mike is “rough around the edges”. HCSS is a character guy, so maybe he pulled the plug based on some negative feedback and progress with other recruits who don’t have the same concerns? I think MJ goes to Louisville based on what I read and Halllmon to NIU. Liking what I read about Zeek Rodney (except classroom performance, but heres hoping that gets cleared up). He could be a good foot in the door in South Carolina. Ward has me worried he’s a lost cause. He’s been showing a lot of love to USF. I guess the Chicago kid just liked the sunshine, cause I can’t figure why else you’d go to the AAC when better conferences are calling. UCLA is late to the game, but the same sun and fun could lure him.
As for the IPF, it is technically in construction. Large components of the facility are being factory fabricated and will be shipped to the site, almost like a pre-fab. We are not seeing it, because it is happening in a shed somewhere else. Expect to see some slab/foundation work in February/March and the superstructure being erected in March/April. The skin I believe is pre-fab panels as well, so they will attach quickly as the structure is picked into place. The 2015 recruits will see it in full construction for spring visits and probably in use on summer visits (maybe even some camps).
Russ when SU is ranked 69th nationally in recruits(class 2014) depression is right around the corner. Also nothing seems to be in the works for talent to get the 69th to “at least” low 50’s. Russ high 60’s is no sign for growth in SU’s program. We were told that with HCSS staff came a better recruiting method than dougies. So far very little has changed. Its early yes, but SU is hardly mentioned on any real decent talent soi far this winter!! 3 star mainly is better than dougie but far behind a decent program!!
Terry,I’m a little thick but no fool and I realize even 50s is too low for recruiting but for now it is what it is and Boise and 2 or 3 other schools with some innovatation and good,hardnosed coaching could win 8 or 9 a yr until HCSS figures it out? I won’t be happy until were in the 30s or low 40s for now with top 25 classes down the line! Merry Xmas to you and you’res Terry and keep your chin up!I did’nt forget the abused kids at PSU!
