As recruiting heated up recently with the end of high school football season and final official visits, so did the Orange commitment list. The Orange picked up its 14th commitment of the 2014 class: cornerback Cordell Hudson.
Some were surprised Hudson did not commit after his official visit to Syracuse went so well on December 6, but he and his mother decided to take his final official visit to Rutgers to make sure he made the right decision. Hudson had a final list of Syracuse, Rutgers and Iowa State. He becomes the second cornerback commit of the class, along with fellow 3-star recruit Lamar Dawson.
Hudson stands 5’11” and just 159 lbs. He will need to do some serious work in the weight room to adjust to the strength and athleticism of ACC wide receivers. Hudson does have raw talent, as shown in his highlight tape. We talked last week about how he had a blast on his official visit to the Hill and believed in Scott Shafer’s philosophy. Unfortunately, Nile Sykes, who also visited that weekend, did not feel as strongly. He committed to Notre Dame over this past weekend.
Syracuse is graduating two starting cornerbacks at the end of this year: Keon Lyn and Ri’Shard Anderson. Although the Orange will liekly start Brandon Reddish and Julian Whigham, a lot of playing time is freed up for Hudson and Dawson to make an immediate impact. There have also been talks that incoming running back Naesean Howard might convert to a secondary position.
The Florida native will be yet another member of the Orange secondary from the Sunshine State. Lyn and Anderson both hail from Miramar, Fla., while Durell Eskridge, Jerami Wilkes and Julian Whigham are all Floridians as well. Scott Shafer said last week about how Syracuse is heavily recruiting in Florida, largely due to the strong pipeline already present and George McDonald’s connections in the area. This is a great pipeline to focus on as the state of Florida breeds some of the nation’s top players every year. Continuing a strong connection to the area could have its benefits long-term on the program as Shafer tries to attract better talent.
Hudson’s commitment continues to show how strong the SU-Florida pipeline is. The next Floridians to look to are wide receiver Steve Ishmael and cornerback Mike Johnson, who are visiting mid-January. Shafer hopes for more talent regardless of location as National Signing Day approaches in less than two months.

Watched the film on him. And he might work out. He does have a heart. But he bounced off a few hits too. That’s due to low weight and lack of muscle. His height is a plus(sort of) since he’s one of tallest CB coming in. I’m telling ya now, that ALL DB/S will be 6’0″+ from now on to have a real chance in the major college football as well as the NFL!! The 5’8 DB/S will no longer be the diamonds. Maybe on “O” but not on “D”!!
Please I’m not trolling here, but Eskridge saying he is staying. You got to be kidding me. Of course he should stay!! LOVE THIS KID, but not NFL talent, not yet. Maybe the SU LBs, but SUs DB/S got burnt many times this year. He has the “it” for may be a NFL career. But to me he has to show it regulally on the field. The Shark did and you only see him sparinglyon SUNDAYs!! So Durell stay put and and show the NFL you are a talent they will want in a couple of years.
They’re has been some concern relating to lack of PR/INTEREST coming out of the Texas Bowl compared to the Snow Bowl of NYC for SUs sake!! Well the NYC Snow Bowl could really give a hoot(did it help SUs recruiting-hell no)!! Really other than saying SU was in a Bowl that’s it for the Snow Bowl!! I really don’t see that much of a difference between the Bowls. But College Football wise there is a huge difference!! Texas is football country and any sincere fan knows that!! I made a donation for Houstons kids to attend the Texas Bowl. Go to Troy Nunes site for a donation. I complain always about the lack of growth on the SUFB program. Who knows with my/your donation and maybe a Houston kid wearing a T-Shirt with CUSE on it he might be the next Earl Campbell and he “might” not forget this memory!! DONATE now who knows! The Texas connection might happen and we all have a hand in on it!!

I disagree I’m not sure how great this pick up Is he run a very slow 40 and isn’t going to be able to keep up with the Sammy Watkins of the world. We need speed and muscle.
If Hudson and Dawson don’t receive a lot of playing time,it could be a very bad sign regarding their ability. I think that will not be the concern here.Adding Ishmael to the WR corp will make the Orange more dangerous in the passing game since McNabb was the QB.The list of WRs is recognizable and challenging for the opposition. West Cornelius Flemming if he is granted another year, Custis Williams,Cooper, Phillips in the slot and maybe Broyld if he learns how to catch the ball with his hands and Estime. Thats quite a rotation for Hunt Edouard or Long.Kimble Austin are long shots for the QB position as starters at least. Backup is another matter.
Chris has a point with the speed/quickness issue. But the WR’s SU has coming in will be hands better than what SU has had in years!! Dump Fleming he’s nothing at all!! So the DB’s will practice against decent talent that in prior years!! BUT HCSS has to have major playing time for FR. NOW and in the future, for 2 reasons. First quality FR. will know that they have a good chance to play or start knowing other FR. have played under HCSS!! And 2nd playing time means experience like it or not. This years 6-6 record is both caused by poor coaching and poor all around talent. So why not start more young blood and build the program up. It can’t get any worse. A mix of old dudes and young bucks now is spreading all over the college football nation. Why not at the CUSE too!!
Watched the SU/STJ game recently. After watching that I’ll miss SUFB even more. Decent game and all, but the color and action was just not there for me!! NOTHING LIKE CFB TO ME!! Beat them Gophers!!

If Terrell Hunt has a game like he had against BC and practices real hard over the summer,then I would agree and say He’s the starter in 2014.
Realistically and I mean really I don’t see that happening. Terrell has been at least inconsistant over the course of play this year. Over throwing the receivers,can’t hit them over the middle,throwing the ball into the ground making it impossible to catch on those little dump passes. I see Edouard and Long redshiting next year. I said it earlier,the one that looks promising because of his arm strenght in practice is Austin Wilson.
Lets review our post in a couple of weeks to see if we still have the same views or not. I know for sure spring practice in 2014 is going to be real interesting.

This is why I watched NJ high school football,I wanted to see what kind of talent was there. After watching the games I asked why aren’t we making a bigger push into that area and try getting some of those players.
Well someone other than Russell and I were watching the games as well. Here are a few names that we all should be watching next year that Syracuse has already offered a scholarship to for the 2015 class.
3* 6’2.5″ 280 lb (OG) Tommy Hatton out of Montvale NJ
3* 6’3″ 290 lb (OT) Steven Gonzalez Union City NJ
3* 6’3″ 210 lb (WR) Daiquan Kelly Union City NJ
3* 6’9″ 305 lb (DL) Keven Feder out of Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey NJ)
3* 6’3″ 210 lb (MLB) Anthony Malaguti out of Bergen Catholic HS (Oradell NJ)
Thanks to Russell for turning me on to NJ high school football. The one player that I want more than any is the 6’9″ Keven Feder. He’s a monster of a lineman. Now don’t get me wrong I’d like to see all of the above commit to Syracuse for 2015. That would be fantastic if it were to happen. That would be “FANTASTIC” Terry.

Ron, What, no love my way!? just kidding. I believe Daiquan Kelly is primarily being recruited as a safety. I am sure that will make Terry happy. I think the OT Gonzalez has already been up for a camp or some other sort of un-official.Players from any of St. Joe’s, Bosco, or Bergen Catholic have some historic success at all levels. There will be a lot of competition. Bosco is a feeder school for BC historically. With them back on the rise, they will be a player in North Jersey, where all the schools Ron mentioned are. We have a chance, and believe me, all the NJ kids have noticed the de-commits from RU and are looking elsewhere. Time to step up.

I apologize for leaving you out of my post. I’m forever grateful for guys like you and Russell for giving me the scoop on NJ football.
Terry was upset because of the chatter that Russell,you and I had on this subject last fall. The recruits that I’ve listed is only the beginning,there are others that we are after for the class of 2015 as well.
While watching Don Bosco Prep play,one of the first things I noticed was the play of 6’9″ (DL) Keven Feder,he didn’t have to jump at all and was blocking passes at the line of scrimmage. I felt/posted that we should be in NJ going after players like that. I don’t know if we will get any of those players,but I do know it’s worth the effort and maybe just maybe we get surprised.
I’ve also come to the conclusion that if anyone out there believes that Coach Shafer isn’t the man to lead the team is in my mind crazy. All they need to do is look at the type of and quality of the recruits he’s going after. Far and away better than anything the last staff accomplished.

I agree with what Malone and Russell told us all last fall. Syracuse needs to reestablish it’s foot print in the Northeast. Going after the recruits that I’ve mentioned tells me that Syracuse and coach Shafer is headed down the right road and may accomplish that goal in 2014.
That game against Notre Dame in MetLife Stadium could be the turning point to getting some of those recruits.
Last fall I posted that Fayetteville-Manlius head coach Damien Rhodes let us know that he too had two recruits a LB and DE on his team that could be D1 players.
One of those players(4* DE Tyrone Wheatly) I thought was coming to Syracuse,but after Marrone and staff left and went to the Buffalo Bills i’m not so sure anymore.

As I look at the major courses for both it seems that I can take screen writing and film courses as my general major elective as a English major.
