The Fizz writers come together to give you their predictions about the final Syracuse matchup of the season. Who do you agree with? Do you think Syracuse can grab the W?
D.A.: Syracuse Wins, 24-22
When the schedule first came out, a final weekend vs. BC at home seemed like an easy win assuming Syracuse wasn’t absolutely awful. The Eagles were coming off of a dismal season, a wretched three years of recruiting under Frank Spaziani, and were trying to break in a first-year head coach. Now, it’s anything but. The Eagles are already bowl eligible, Steve Addazio has them playing hard every week, and running back Andre Williams is a Heisman candidate. It’s a one-game season for the Orange, and Scott Shafer needs to prove his squad can play for him when it matters most. Syracuse will pull this out on the strength of a strong ground attack and an opportunistic defense. Syracuse becomes bowl eligible with a 24-22 win.
Kevin Fitzgerald: Syracuse Wins, 27-21
Syracuse has one more shot to become the 11th bowl eligible team from the ACC. The odds look as if they’re stacked against the Orange, with no Sean Hickey to protect Terrel Hunt on the offensive line and a 2,000-yard back in Andre Williams coming to town. But on senior day, Jay Bromley and his defense will be able to rally the troops one last time. Williams has rushed for over 2,000 yards because of his ability to absorb tackles. He’s a flat-out monster. But Syracuse has still not allowed a tailback to rush for 100 yards all season. On their home turf, expect the Orange to pull one out to become bowl eligible: Syracuse 27, Boston College 21.
Brendan Glasheen: Syracuse Wins, 23-17
The Orange has been a resilient bunch all season when its back is against the wall. All the talk has been surrounded around Eagles RB Andre Williams. Not to take anything away from Williams’ outstanding season, Syracuse has the numbers on its side. SU is one of just three FBS schools to not allow a 100-yard rusher this season. Chuck Bullough’s defense is fourth in the ACC against the run. With bowl eligibility on the line, Syracuse turns to its defensive leaders like Jay Bromley, Marquis Spruill and Durrell Eskridge to get over the hump. The defense has carried the load all year long and it will come up big one more time. Senior day in the Dome provides some extra motivation. The defense leads while Jerome Smith stands out and continues his offensive MVP-like season.¬†No guarantee for a bowl even with the W, but Syracuse prevails 23-17 over BC.
Seth Goldberg: Syracuse Loses, 24-10
The Orange has a tough task at hand this weekend. The loss to Pittsburgh last weekend took a huge toll on the Orange, the team seemed defeated, and they may not be able to get up off the mat. With BC, the Orange defense will be tested on the ground by Andre Williams. Williams has already rushed for over 2,000 yards on the season and has run over 200 yards in six of 11 games this year. The rush defense has been the strength of the Orange, allowing about 133 yards per game. But Williams will hold his own even against a strong Syracuse run defense. On offense, the Orange will not be able to score enough points. The offense has simply lost too many pieces at this point. The injuries to Brisley Estime, Prince-Tyson Gulley, Jarrod West and now Beckett Wales are likely too much to overcome for Terrel Hunt and the Orange, even with a strong ground attack remaining with Jerome Smith, George Morris II and Devante McFarlene. This could be the final audition for Hunt to be the starting quarterback next year. While the Orange could beat BC, the combination of still overcoming last week’s tough loss and Andre Williams punishing Syracuse on the ground will send the Orange to a loss, 24-10, and a 5-7 record on the year.
Zephan Mayell: Syracuse Loses, 27-17
Unfortunately, I do not see the Orange winning this football game. Andre Williams will be too big of a force on the ground for the Eagles. The Orange had a great chance to reach bowl eligibility against the Panthers last week and squandered the opportunity. However, I expect the seniors on Syracuse to play their hearts out. Most of these seniors were here two years ago when Syracuse started 5-2 and did not make a bowl game. With a sour taste still in their mouths, these guys know they have one last chance to get to the postseason and not have a repeat of 2011. With the way the offense has been playing for the Orange, however, I see the Eagles winning this game by a score of 27-17.
Austin Pollack: Syracuse Loses, 35-13
Syracuse’s biggest focus is Andre Williams; the BC star running back is a Heisman hopeful. The Syracuse defense has been inconsistent all season, but was very strong against two ACC opponents, Wake Forest and Maryland. The defense gave up three points in those two weeks, but it was right back to a struggle against Florida State. If the defense can somehow stop Williams from going off, the Orange has a chance. He will find the open lane and run down the field because that’s how good he is. He has rushed for more than 2,000 yards this season, and could have a breakout game. It’s all up to the Orange defense to stop him. BC gets the win, 35-13

The ACC will have the officials fix the game to get Syracuse bowl eligable. Just like last week when they fixed it so that Pitt would be. Really, that’s what big time sports are all about, how stupid are we.
Wonderful…. Remember..we’re all God’s children….
Noticed the Cuse ranked 65th in the college football polls…. Noticed our recuiting classes continue to be in the 60’s… Neither are perfect but for those that discount such things… Seems to be a consistant
Like to beat BC’s brains in but having trouble getting enthusiastic .
Basketball team looked real good.. Grant is going to be a star!
Good luck to the kids.. Hope the seniors go out with a win… Good kids, played hard..just limited talent!
I am really pulling for our guys but that doesn’t matter when the game starts. What does matter is how the Orange execute the game plan that the coach’s put together.
I look for another low scoring game as both teams rely heavily on the running game. I don’t see either team scoring more than two touchdowns.
I hope our guys pull it out. I’ve got the Orange 17….. BC 13
Good luck team…. get this win!
Syracuse should win this game for the simple fact they have one of the best Run defense’s in the country however if BC stacks 9 cause in the box Su needs to get creative on 1st and 2nd down and take shots down the field to make Bc play honest D. Should be a close game but I think the Cuse stills this one at home.
While I would love to see the team go to a bowl, I think that we don’t have the offense to get past BCA lot must go very well for Hunt today for the team to go forward.We are missing a big-time lineman in Hickey and being replaced by a kid who really struggled last week. I’m not expecting a good day in the Dome today.
PPPLLEEEAASSSEE WIN THIS ONE…SEE YA AT DA DOME
To all know it alls. Terrel Hunt is the future quarterback for The Orange!
Shafer has the Cuse Bowl Eligible with 6 wins in his first season. Where are all the fans that compared him to Grob? Are you kidding me? This team could have won 8 games (Penn State…and Pitt) Congratulations Scot shafer and staff….A good start!…Now let’s get some better recruits and a big time QB!…Go Cuse….
DB; Didn’t you watch the game , Hunt is a big time QB.
I did watch the game…..One game does not make you a big time Qb. He played well today. Maybe this is the first game in his development ….but the jury is still out. He can’t deliver the ball down the field the way this offense needs to be successful. Spring ball will be very interesting. The QB job or 2014 should be a wide open race. Hunt has a leg up because of experience gained…..but a real top QB should be able to unseat him. We have two true Freshman QB’s and a new QB coming in to start early in January…
i say cuse 34, BC 31.
@Dr. bill;
I said earlier that I thought Terrell Hunt would not be in the mix/competition in spring practice in 2014. To be very honest with you I have to re-evaluate and think about it over the winter. Lets give the kid credit,where has that performance been. Taking the team the lenght of the field with 2 minutes left in the game and scoring the go ahead TD was amazing. Terrell turned a lot of heads tonight and will enter practice in the spring as the person to beat out for the starting job.
Russell Dangerfield and others who predicted a 6-6 record this year;major kudo’s on a job well done.
The team had 480 total yards of offense against BC. held their Heisman Trophy Candidate to 29 total yards and did not play in the second half of the game. At the beginning of the season I predicted Syracuse to go 9-3. If they would have played like that against Northwestern,Penn State,Clemson,Pittsburgh,Georga Tech. We could have had an over-all anywhere from 6-6,7-5,8-4,9-3,10-2,11-1. Can you imagine that happening?
Congratulations goes to Coach Shafer on achieving a goal of 6-6 and becoming “BOWL ELIGIBLE”in his first year as a head coach of s D1 program. First time in school history that that’s been done.
If they go to Michigan for a bowl game,it looks like I’ll be traveling around Chrisrmas time.
One other thing gentlemen to think about,Coach Shafer is the man to lead Syracuse back to the national sceen.
480 total yards tonight,AMAZING AND PRICELESS.
Syracuse proved all the pundits who at the beginning of the season predicted them to finish in last place in the ACC WRONG. Syracuse finished in 3rd place in the Atlantic division with an (6-6 4-4 ACC)becoming bowl eligible. Should be interesting.
Very nice win… Congrats to the kids..Shafer.. The whole gang!
Hope the Seniors get their Bowl game and go out winners!
They had a better season than I expected…
Maybe Ron is right and Shafer can coach…hopeso…He needs some talent!
What a week to be a member of the Orangenation. The mens basketball team coming off winning the Maui Invitational Championship,the womens basketball team beats 12th ranked Texas A&M(78-63) in the championship game of the Paradise Jam Reef Division title and improves to 8-0 on the year.
Then there was “thee” game against Boston College on Saturday. I’m going to be the first to say “my feelings/emotions”ran the gammut. In the end I couldn’t be more proud than what I am right now to be a fan of Syrause University Athletics and a member of the ORANGENATION.
All season long I’ve been one that has critized Terrell Hunt for lack of leadership and the ability to sustain and lead this team down field for a score to win a game. Today It looks like I have to ask my wife to make me a CROW PIE to eat. I just want to say Terrell that you performed at the highest level that anyone could ask of you to do. “JOB WELL DONE”,young man set back and glow in the rave reports that’s coming to you from the coaching staff and from the fans. The script to the end of the 2013 season couldn’t have been written any better. congratulations to you and the team for not giving up.
How could you not love that fake spike at the end for a crucial first down!? Shafer did an excellent job as a head coach selling that fake. He walked out onto the field frantically signaling spike. Anyone who thinks that was Hunt overruling his coach doesn’t quite get it. The glue is starting to harden. I feel the tables turning. Recruiting class will be good. Despite delays, the IPF will get built.
Congrads on a 6-6 is numbing. We SU fans are sincere with 6-6 then SU is in trouble. I did predict 6-6, but was looking more at 7-5. but 6-6 is not a winning season. but batter than losing!! Yes its a start, but come on RON its not really what the doctor(not Gross)odered!
@Terry;
I know,believe me I know. But Terry take a look at the whole picture at the beginning of the season.
Marrone and this staff left for Buffalo. Scott Shafer was hired as the new coach,came in and immediately started working his butt off trying to save what was left of the 2013 class,along with putting a new coaching staff together. His task wasn’t easy,the pressure to produce was placed on his shoulders immediately after Marrone had left. Working with what he had,he directed this team to be the best that they could be and they rewarded him with going 6-6 for the year and became bowl eligible.
It isn’t what the doctor ordered Terry but you know you have to start some where. Scott Shafer has done what no other coach in the history of Syracuse Football has ever done and that was becoming “BOWL ELIGIBLE” in his first year as head coach.
For me (6-6 4-4 ACC) is pretty damn good. I’ll take it because that gives him a starting point for the program to build on. Look I predicted a 9-3 record this year,I like what @Malone said in his post,especially when he said “The glue is starting to harden. I feel the tables turning”.
We both know it takes time to accomplish turning a losing team into a contender. Lets give our Coach the benifit and give him a chance to prove to us what he’s all about.
Ron,Malone and I…as usual feel some of the same things!! I feel like the “worm is turning” too!!Now hopefully with a bowl win and a few recruiting surprises we’ll get back into the “national picture”.What an unbelievably GREAT finish to the regular season!!Best win of the yr IMO!!Now I can enjoy the holiday season and won’t be eating crow!!Like Ron I did’nt see the QB game TH had all yr?Can he keep improving?Like Ron I’ll need to rethink my opinion..Terry as usual keeps our feet on the ground!
@Russell Dangerfield;
I know that I’m going to get some flack when I say that I put the Boston College game on equal footing with the Va Tech game that Syracuse won with no time remaining on the clock using the same play with the QB rolling to his right and throwing back to the TE for the go ahead score.
I’ve always said Russell,give me a kid that playes the game with heart and 9 out of 10 times your going to have a damn good football player. These kids played with emotion and showed us all that they played with their hearts. I hope Coach Shafer and staff brings in a few surprises at the end of the year.
If anyone was really watching the game on Saturday,they would have come to the same conclusion as I did, what we were really watching was the future of Syracuse Football.
Devante McFarlane and George Morris 11 looked impressive,Josh Parris big strong and can catch the ball is going to be a force to be reckoned with over the 3-4 years. On Saturday we saw (WR) Quinta Funderburk,(RF-WR)Alvin Cornelius,Brisly Estime and (FS)Durell Eskridge catching the ball when thrown to them.
At times to be successful you have to think “outside the box”. If we were the coach who of us out there would have made the decision to put a defensive player free safety with 3-4 games remaining in the season in as a reciever? Coach Shafer made one of the biggest decisions probably in his life when he put Durell Eskridge in as a wide receiver. A gamble that has paid him back in spades. Wouldn’t you agree?
Just to let everyone know (RF-WR)Alvin Cornelius is from Staten Island, N.Y. / Tottenville.
Ron, Ron, Ron, your homer is showing. Recruits are not going to sign with SU because they beat BC. Not at all!! Neither is its 6-6 record or a bottom rank bowl either gather interest for SU. What brings talent to SU is constant winning(lack of that recently) and a huge trust/belief in “ALL” SU staff!! So HCSS and staff have to sell its self honesty by Feb 2014. Plus next year say what you do. PLAY FRESHMEN!! And don’t frigging lie!!
HCSS’s BC presser was a work of art. I just can’t understand why the national media has not caught on to this guy yet!! That just tells you how bad the upstate media really is. Come guys/gals this guy is unique or I’m wrong.
HUNT was better but…………. He still missed open WR’s. Really if he throw a couple better passes it was a no contest!! But also a sure TD was dropped in the endzone in 2nd quarter! Also his running is more lumbering than it should be. I think a QB camp if leagal wouldn’t him at all. PS why does HUNT get a # of his passes knocked/batted down??? Must be throwing too flat!! Just wondering
SPEED SPEED SPEED when a QB/WR easily out run SU DB’s where’s the speed. The speed of this team is totally lacking. Williams ran around the corner with ease TOO!! Correct that please HCSS!!
But still a great great win!! And the holidays will be better than I thought. So SANTA we all know your a true “CUSE” fan. Please sprinkle some of that magic dust you have on a few recruits so they sign with SU this Febuary. That would be a great Christmas Present!! And us sincere “CUSE” fans will leave you that special thing on Christmas Eve- wink wink!! Please SANTA!!!
Please at this time of remberance of the less fortunate, do not forget the poor children abused at PSABUSEDU!! The frigging NCAA did!! Sorry SANTA I want to be good but its hard!!
Terry, I agree that we need better speed. Estime represents what we could be. He is fast, had a big catch with a banged up hand (hardnosed) and just draws attention. Image a few more of him out there and things open up. Hunt and Broyld don’t seem to click. Hunt is often behind Broyld, and AB’s response is not fitting of an SU representative in that he yells and pouts a lot. If all goes well we can close out the recruiting strong. We are still in on more than a few telented kids that could bring our class into the 40s at least.
Yes it is Terry,YES IT IS.
@Terry;
I would say the kids thought process is way different today than what it was Terry when guys like you,me,Russell and Malone were their age.
What makes you so sure that maybe a recruit won’t pick Syracuse because of a 6-6 record or beating Boston College to become bowl eligible? I think anything is possible and if a recruit were to use both as reasons to commit to Syracuse,well I think both you and I would be pleasantly surprised that they come to Syracuse to play football.
Ron,as wise as Malone is I don’t think he’s near our(+Terry)age….just between generations?My sense/guess on Malone’s age?37/39? Do you think Malones 55+ Ron? btw,Im really appreciating Terry’s rational posts! They keep our feet on the ground as he knows when he should or should’nt have the glasses on so we don’t get too complacent as fan’s we can find that hard to do!
@Russell Dangerfield;
Russell,I lost the ability to figure/guess how old a person is long ago. I was surprised when Terry told us how old he was and that he was a grandfather. He’s a man that stands behind what he believes in and is a family man.
All I can say about @Malone is I’m glad he’s a member of the Fizz website. I don’t know where he gets all his information from,but I know he’s on top of things,just like Carlton is out of Florida and I appreciate both of them sharing their information with the rest of us.
Wonderful blog! I found it while browsing on Yahoo News.
