Last week, Syracuse released the rest of the 2014 football non-conference schedule. Perhaps one of the biggest surprises is the Orange will travel to the state of Michigan, but not to visit Ann Arbor or East Lansing.
The Orange will start with a home opener against former Big East basketball foe Villanova before traveling to Central Michigan two weeks later. Syracuse also hosts Maryland at the Carrier Dome in a home-and-home series, with the second game coming in 2019. Lastly, the Orange will head to East Rutherford, NJ to play a neutral game with Notre Dame at Metlife Stadium.
The Central Michigan game is part of a two-for-one series that includes visits from the Chippewas to the Carrier Dome in 2015 and another at a later date. The Orange won the only game played between the schools in 1999 at the Dome. Central Michigan recently churned out the first overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft, Eric Fisher, who was also the  first overall selection ever from the MAC conference.
The organization of the non-conference schedule is advantageous for the Orange. The ‘Nova and CMU games will allow the Orange to find its stride in the beginning of the season, setting up the games against stiffer competition. The schedule difficulty is different compared to this season. Many have wondered how the season, including the quarterback situation, would have played out if the games against Wagner and Tulane were before Penn State and Northwestern.

Although Syracuse is not vying for a national championship in 2014, strength of schedule is always scrutinized. Maryland could be threat to SU, as they have played well thus far at 5-3 and have seen a boost in recruiting since their conference change announcement to the Big Ten in November 2012.
The showdown with Notre Dame will certainly be the strongest test for the Orange. This is yet another game Dr. Gross scheduled to gain exposure for the program in the NYC area. Syracuse has lost out on several high-profiled recruits in recent years to the Irish, some of whom are from the Big Apple. Prospective recruits will definitely be in attendance to see if the Orange can compete with the national brand of Notre Dame football. The stadium will most likely be packed with Irish fans, as Notre Dame has a very strong alumni presence and fanbase in the New York area.
Even with another five games remaining this season, it does not hurt to see who Syracuse will be facing next season. Could there be another quarterback competition if Terrel Hunt cannot produce?
At least this time around, the Orange will be eased into the season to make that decision.

It’s about time Syracuse changed it’s non conference games to the begining of the schedule instead of playing the harder games first. Villanova at home the first game of the year is going to be a good test for Syracuse,aren’t they one of the teams that makes the FCS playoffs every year.
Villanova-bye week-Central Michigan-maryland-Notre Dame is a good start to the season and Syracuse should be ready for the rigors of the ACC in 2014.
Look I’m getting tired of reading that when we play teams at MetLife Stadium top recruits from the NYC area will be in attendance to watch the game. The last two games at the Met hasn’t given us any of the top recruits from that area because their just not interested in playing Syracuse Football. My question,with zero results in recruiting those players,instead of wasting time and money on them why doesn’t Syracuse bring in the recruits from out of state that they’re interested in? The NYC kids already have their minds set as to where their going to play,let’s spend time going after the kids that want to come to Syracuse to play.
Give them hell(sorry for swearing-LOL) RON!! SU playing at Giant Stadium only makes sense when SU is back to solid winning years!! And lately that ain’t so!! If SU does not change into winning ways it won’t matter if SU plays on MARS!! These players of today want a winning tradition-period!! I believe that totally. Then a player starts looking at facilities and conferences!! Right NOW SU has neither!! $$$$$$$$$ is the sole issue with playing at Giant stadium and its a Dr Gross thing. Other than the $$$$$ the game is useless. I wonder where the $$$$$$$ goes anyway. Not towards facilities SU does not have any new facilities yet!! Are we going Grambling U’s way??? Hope not!! Its time Dr Gross to be dumped and leave his SUBB feelings behind!! BYE DOC!!

Now “Mars” might be an interesting game site Getting there would be the most fun and ESPN might want to make it a “game day event complete with some three boobed commentator ladies on the sideline. But that aside I agree that the NJ games are stupid while trying to build the fan base in the city. Why pay NJ rental fees when filling up the Dome might generate more income from a home game. Not to mention the $ made on M Street in merchandise sales. We still would get the $ for a national broadcast.
Funny as it turns out NW and PSU aren’t really having good years as we come into the homestretch of the season?No doubt with the easing of sanctions the NCAA made sure PSU would’nt have to suffer much from their lack of institutional control(FB 1st)and the only thing we learned is $$$ are a higher priority than moral’s!Let’s not forget or let them forget that we remember!
I too like how next season starts out. Only thing that doesn’t make sense is the bye on the second week. I think Villanova and Central Michigan will be good tests to start out. It should give us some good confidence going into Maryland, ND games.
I too never liked the thought of playing at Metlife. I agree with Terry bout where does the money go. Does it help with recruiting, coaches salaries, scholarships? What? I don’t think that it will ever help bring in top talent from down state. It hasn’t yet. So why keep pursuing these kids. Maybe that’s why Grob didn’t pursue them. I agree with Ron. Go after the kids that want to play here. The question is this. How does a coach know what kid wants to come here? We have seen in recent yrs now kids that have said they want to play here but go else where to play. So if a coach doesn’t take the time to pursue somebody. Coaches are played all the time. Just my thought on that.

It has been proven time and again that we make more money on the games in NJ than we do in the Dome. The M Street revenue has no impact on the University, so why should the Universtiy pander to M Street? If this game is not at MetLife, ND backs out of it as part of their agreement with the ACC, sending us scrambling for another Wagner to fill the hole. NY/NJ recruits are still a part of our recruiting effort and this game gives the potential for a lot of unofficials that we may not get to the Dome. Defending this game is getting old. We didn’t sell out #3 (at the time)Clemson, but we’ll be packed ot the gills for unranked ND? You want to focus on out of area talent? There are a lot more direct flights to NY/NJ than Syracuse. My biggest issue is the SU turnout at these games is equalled only by the SU turn out in the Dome. 20K fans in a 45K stadium seems better than 20K fans in a 85K stadium. If its about money and not facilities, as everyone says above, then this game make THE MOST sense because it is more money and exposure and not in our “poor” facilities (sarcasm, I don’t think our facilities are that bad).
I don’t understand everyone now saying we should quit on the NY/NJ kids. I thought we were starting to see the gate swing the other way, and I think there are quite a few area kids that we’ve already targeted. I think we need to go local for OL help in particular, as the farm kids get grabbed by the likes of OU and Texas and the B1G teams. Have we forgotten how many SU greats are from the NY/NJ area? Recent greats too. Where would we be without Darius, Moore, Monk, McPherson, Harrison, or OL men like Shelton Prescott, or Justin Pugh? Just look at the 1995 roster, one of our greatest teams in recent history. Kevin Johnson, Tebucky Jones, later players like Tyree and Spotwood. I am leaving out Jim Brown, Floyd Little or Jim Ringo because I am focused on more recent success. After this season, assuming we right the ship even a little, next season will be a great opportunity to put our recruiting foot on Rutgers’ throat. We won’t get it all back at once, RU has done more solidifying of their base than we give credit to, but their on field performance is beginning to show what’s really behind the facade, and after a season of B1G embarassment, they will not have as good a footing.
The 2014 team with this schedule will be far more likely to get to a bowl game than this year’s bunch.Some quality at WR and QB bodes well for Shafer and his assistants.
Malone isn’t Pugh from PA?? NY/NYC/LI/NJ talent just is not interested in SU!! But you’re right about the talent that came from pre GROB and until now!! History has shown that playing in the big apple DOES NOT help DU recruiting at all!!

Terry, yes Pugh is from PA. Eastern PA. Close to NJ. We have played exactly 2 games “in the big apple” and I have a hard time saying that is enough history to show anything. There are quite a few NY/NJ kids on the current team. The NJ kids are probably the most lacking and I for one feel that needs to be fixed. Exposure is a good way to fix it.
I get your point, but there was NOTHING that GROB did right. We can’t recruit these areas BECAUSE he ignored it for four years.

Every once in awhile I show my disgust that I have a any given point by making a stupid statement by ignoring the NYC/NJ/LI area recruits. Then someone comes along and slaps me up side the head and tells me to straighten up. Thanks Malone for slapping me upside the head today.
Yes I want the kids from those areas,it’s frustrating for me to watch them all go to other schools only for them to set the benches when they can come here and start almost immediately. It’s frustrating as all get out.
We didn’t make the trip to MetLife to watch the Penn State game. I will not miss the ND game next season. I guess we’ve made(or I should say I’ve made plans to go out to the Central Michigan Game next year. Maybe I can get my wife to go to the game with me once we get out to my son’s house for the weekend.

Dr.Gross when you set up the mini series with USC in football I thought we were going to play them in basketball too. I don’t remember them playing the game yet,can you please tell us all when we get the home and away game in basketball with USC?

Ron, it was meant more as a shake than a slap, but the ends justify the means. I get the frustration, mine is at a Rob Moore level, but we can’t give up. There are probably 5 kids in the Midwest and 10 more in Florida that cannot afford to fly in and take unofficial visits. Combine that with the staff not wanting to schedule officials in season, and we are not getting these kids to campus until January, when its very cold and snowy in Syracuse and after a lot of them have already made a decision. I love getting them to a basketball game, but these are football players. They want to see a game day atmosphere. Recruiting locally where there is ample talent (NJ) allows us to get recruits to games as unofficials and putting a game in an NFL stadium in their back yard, in the sports media capital of the world is a marketing and recruiting coup, especially if the fans show up (that seems to be the hard part). ND schedules games in Chicago even though they have one of the most iconic and best game day environs in college football. Why? Because its smart, that’s why. Dr Gross is being smart too, now it’s time for us fans to get smart and jump on board.

Your right and so is Russell when telling us all just how important the NYC/NJ/LI areas are to Syracuse. I’ve been on board with Syracuse Football for so long that jumping ship is something that just doesn’t appeal to me. Come hell or high water,I’m a Syracuse Fan for life and nothing is ever going to change my loyalty to them. The two decommits that we recently experienced was devastating,Jason Cabinda’s decommit(for me)cut to the bone and it hurt. Like I said it’s frustrating really frustrating.
In the end though Malone I feel things will change. If Russell is correct in telling us that Rutgers is in a decline and the fans wanting change then maybe those recruits will start to see just how good our program is here and start commiting to Syracuse.
Ron, that is my hope too. Rutgers has their pants down this year. They are very exposed finally and I can’t help but believe that Schiano’s fall has had something to do with accelerating and celebrating it. One of the next steps is to expose the B1G as a whole. I recently read an article about Ohio St. running up scores on conference opponents because they have to. They are undefeated and on the outside looking in for the National Championship. Due to the lack of strength in the B1G, they have almost no shot of making the game, even if they win out. Combine that with the general belief that Rutgers will get walked over in that league, and there is opportunity for us to take back the territory that was once ours and own our back yard. Won’t happen overnight, but they need to have a few guys flip like we had with Cabinda (hurt me too as he was a polished NJ guy).
For the record, because I know this is one of Terry’s points, Rutgers didn’t get the top HS guy in NJ (Peppers)or the top JUCO, from NJ (Mavety). In fact, Rutgers is recruiting well, by most accounts better than us, and they have only one of the top ten recruits in their own state. And in case you are thinking they are not going to good programs, the top 10 is going to Michigan, ND, Ohio St., Penn St., Mich. St. so you see why I say the B1G beeing a little more down than they think is a good thing for us to recruit places like NJ.
Wake up RON, RUSS and MALONE!!! NY/NJ/NYC/LI and PA too are history as of NOW for SU and TOP FLIGHT HSFB talent!! SU is still in running for 2 and some 3 stars from these areas. But mainly crumbs and few at that!! GROB(not a fan of his) saw that many moons ago and NOW its still the same. History has shown that over and over and over again!! Losing NYS best HSFB players is old news. Get over it!! And this years staff can’t change that. My sources in NJ say SU just does not have the bling for their best to go there. PA has always been a great breeding ground for HSFB in NE. Around Philly and Pitt was once decent for SU. Even when Pitt and PSABUSERU were at their best. SU always got more than a few(like now) from PA!! NYS well that’s a sore just won’t heal and I feel the lights are turned off at SU and players like the lights of OSU,ND,PSABUSERU, MICH and ETC!! SU has to change program wise, tradition wise and bling wise to get back on the top like it was once at!! Huge changes have to be made, but I just don’t see that while Dr Gross is here. SU needs a no bars held AD that want ALL programs to succeed!! One of my bucket-list wishes was granted a few years back and that was attend a FSU FB game. Well the smells and sounds of that game changed me forever and it also showed me how backward SU really is!!! New facilities(if they are really coming-thanks Doc) should help, but the SUFB environment has to change too!! I just feel the homers just don’t want change and prefer losing to winning. The last 10/12 years have shown that. 2 barely winning seasons!! A couple loses(Toledo for 1) and SU would have a losing record for that period!! I HATE LOSING DO YOU?? IT SEEMS NOT BY NO UPROAR FROM THE HOMERS!!

Terry, I can understand where you’re coming from, but I think you have me wrong. I am not a homer in the sense that I understand the term. I want to see the team (and the school) succeed on all levels in all aspects. We can’t simultaneously ask that traditions be adhered to and change come rapidly. I want change, because I want success, but not at the expense of losing the identity of the school. I will look at your prime target of ire as my example. PSU is a huge tradition monger. They live on it and that is a large part of what got Cabinda to flip. About 15-20 years ago, when we were probably at our best and they at their worst, Paterno saw the writing on the wall that he needed more success or he was out. He hired some guys to help turn it around, he dropped the standards of acceptance to get better athletes in despite questionable morals, he fostered the football first mindset that ultimatly produced the Sandusky scandal. Look back and you will see that people applauded his willingness to change and that he if anyone had the ability to mold questionable kids into PSU men. Look also at the fights the team got into at parties, or the other off field issues, such as players assaulting students, or Kerry Collins who was a mess of an alcoholic until he got with the Giants. I want wins and success, but not at that price. I don’t think that makes me a homer.
My desire to recruit NY/NJ is more from the fact that there is talent there and it is closer/easier for our school to recruit. I agree that the school needs to put up or shut up right now with regard to paying into the program. I am hoping the ACC affiliation pays off in this regard.
I don’t fully understand your belief that Gross is a BBall only guy. I think he’s tried to fix things with FB but he didn’t know how and made mistakes. He is a first time AD and coming from a FB power in USC (and not a hoops mecca by any means) he may not have understood how the other half lives when he got here. Of course he latched on to hoops, they were coming off a National Championship and seeing a huge uptick in recruiting and notariety. Money was coming in (mostly from Melo) and that lead to the Melo Center. Hoops was the program that handed him the keys to NYC. Hoops fans make home games out of any arena. FB doesn’t do that. That’s not Gross’ fault. That is the fans’ fault. I was on the hill for one of the more prosperous periods in SUFB and SUBB still ruled the roost. It was SUBB that went to the Championship in 1996, not FB. That 1995-1996 FB team was one of the best teams in program history talent wise, and it was chock full of NY/NJ talent. It wiped the field with Clemson in the Gator Bowl. That was the team PSU and Miami (another program built on questionable morals from ashes in the 80’s) didn’t want to play. We can do that again, we didn’t need to change who we were then and don’t need to change who we are now to do it. We just need to get the talent in place and, it seems tweaking the coaching staff may be necessary. We need an identity. We need to put a football philosophy in place and stick to it. Wholesale changes don’t work. History has proven that too.
Alright I hear your arguments, and agree with them. My question though is this. How does SU start to get these players from down state to start coming? Some of you think it’s a good idea to play at metlife. So SU starts scheduling games their against respectable teams. To be able to play in their back yard as it is put. Yet these players still go elsewhere. WHY? I feel that GROB cutting tie with the schools the way that he did. Not making the effort to pursue kids in that area and going to places that are not noted for SU to recruit is still hurting this program. I think Marrone has done a very nice job in trying to make ends meet. He got back into these places and has made SU known again to these schools. I just don’t think that some of these schools trust sending their players up here yet. I feel that is why the top talent has been still leaving to go to other schools.
On the other hand. I think we all know that the play on the field has to change. Since the Grob era SU just hasn’t been good. All those losing seasons with Grob. I feel that we just haven’t gotten out of that hole yet. Marrone has tried to put us in the right direction. But even under Marrone we still had every bad loses that didn’t help the program. Even now losing the way we have lost this year has killed us more now that in the past. The up and down crap has to stop. We need to be more consistent on the field and not look so lost.
The thing I can’t understand the most is. If you watch SU play. These kids are looking to get playing time right away. You are a top QB, or receiver, or any thing you can think of. Why is it that these kids don’t see that they can come to SU and play right away? None of you can disagree with me on this. Why don’t these kids see this? To watch this team and see that we have positions of need. I just don’t get it. I hope that the ’14 recruiting class can do just that and get us going in the right direction

But MANY SU fans just seem to think oh well wait until next year or better yet wait 20 years for something to happen. That’s where SU is now. 4/5 win season probably is the best for SU in 2013!! So I say it like it is as would a Alabama fan would. But many SU fans won’t!! I’m a huge CUSE fan and defend them constantly!! I’m tired of losing and being embarrassed!! DR Gross is more excited about SUBB than SUFB by yards. Look at his hires,the Giant Stadium sites($$$ option really only reason)poor facilities and when the facilities show up they are stalled. What goes??? You really think a AD of a so called major college football program would act like that. No way yet he always does. The facts say college football is #1 by tons in many issues not college basketball. Yet he sits on his hands. SUBB is a super winning program not like SUFB program!! He has his hands on the SUBB program more than SUFB too. No matter what JB thinks!! He has outlived his usefulness and time for him and his ego to move on. I was a big fan of his until he smelled up the facilities thing and yet NO ONE at all is talking about these facilities lagging behind. Shame is the only word to explain Dr’s motive or at least treat us SUFB fans to the truth why the facilities are a no show. Sorry just the anti-homer in me!!
You have to admit, it looks like Florida St and Clemson were right. Syracuse is in it for the money and have no intention to become a viable football power. Why would this University be involved in any endeavor that it is not going to try to achieve at its highest level. Makes Su look like money grubbers.

I don’t know if this is a sign of things starting to happen with the new IPF but yesterday I noticed that a trailer was parked at the other end of the building site. I don’t know if it was to store the track and fiels equipment in it or if it was loaded with different construction equipment to be used during the contruction of the new building.
All that I can say for sure is that it’s never been there before. Maybe we’re closer to the start of the construction that we think. Let’s hope.
