Charley Loeb was put in a tough situation this year. After three seasons as Ryan Nassib’s backup, it looked like Loeb could get his shot to run the team. As it turns out, he lost out to both Drew Allen and Terrel Hunt.
But Loeb says the competition was tough, and in the end, everyone made out for the best. This year, Loeb has taken on more of a coaching role on the sidelines, relaying signals to Hunt and the offense as George McDonald gives other signs for the plays, something Loeb says the coaches asked him to do. Loeb added he has enjoyed the experience and he could see himself coaching to stay close to the game after he graduates in May.
On the matter of the coaching change, Loeb says the major difference is that Scott Shafer is a defensive guy and Doug Marrone was an offensive one.
“No two coaches are the same, but because Shafer was on Marrone‚Äôs staff, not much had changed.”
It is interesting to think not much has changed since Marrone took so many coaches to Buffalo.
Loeb also has an interesting perspective on the play of Hunt and know what he is expected to do in the gameplan. Hunt came in and lit up Wagner and Tulane, making the offense look like a more cohesive unit than it had been under Allen. Loeb said that Hunt simply executed well and exploited the defense’s weaknesses. He also said the supporting cast seemed to play better, the wide receivers made plays and the line held more blocks.
As for Hunt’s struggles against Clemson, Loeb attributed it more to the Tigers’ defense.
“They are a very, very good team. Something goes into that we did have over 300 yards rushing, and if you are going to take away the pass and let us run for 300 yards, it is going to be harder to pass the ball. I think Terrel still did a great job managing the game.”
While Loeb could be putting a good face on for the team, it still must be difficult to say that Hunt managed the game well when he completed just 8 of 24 passes, threw three interceptions and led the offense to just 14 points. Loeb added that Hunt has a bright future. Loeb seemed to think that if Hunt keeps doing what he is doing, he will be a solid quarterback for the Orange for the next couple of years.
Loeb brings an interesting perspective and is extremely smart. If coaching is something Loeb wants to get into – and he said it is – the Orange would be lucky to have him, perhaps as a graduate assistant in the immediate future and then as some kind of positions coach thereafter.

I give Charlie alot of credit for hanging in there as he did!! Class act!! I never heard pouting or childish action from him on playing time. Granted he is no McNabb, but class anyway. Thank you Charlie!! Besides your SU degree won’t hurt you at all!!

Terry,what do you think our record will be now with the lukewarm start?I’m sticking with 7-5 but if we don’t beat NC St I may reevaluate?The thing I hear about NC St is their Dline is VERY good?If so our running game(which we’ll need)may find it tough sledding.After FSU,Miami and Clemson though I think we have as good a team as most(Wake,BC,Dook,Va,Pitt,Md,NC St,NC)even maybe VT or GT!!Just need another couple of good recruiting classes to catch up to the top tier!
After our latest commit 3* Beau Benzschawel,I checked the 2014 class rankings and again found them to be interesting.
Scout.com has Syracuse 2014 class ranked 48th.
Rivals.com has the team ranked 63rd.
It appears to me that one site knows what they’re talking about while the other set’s on their laurels and guesses what the class rankings should be.

Just letting you know that I’m rooting for FSU to beat Clemson next week. What’s the story on the betting line? Is anyone of the skilled position players hurt that will keep them out of the game? I hope your corners and safety’s can keep up with their recievers and shut down the deep threat. More importantly,I hope that there is communication between them during the game,something that was missing in the Syracuse game.

I have to say Marrone did us no favors by gutting the SU coaching staff. He took seven (7) coaches and that HURTS. Poor Shafer & company now will have to double time to make up the lost assistant coaching ground and its connections. We should NOT have a coaching turnover merry-go-round and expect quick results. SU needs to develop connections and networks to get good recruits.
Syracuse wouldn’t pay Marrone. I thought thats why we got into the ACC. That means the staff payrate is very low as well. He should have stayed being the 65th highest paid coach in college football? When he has offers from The NFL? He shouldn’t offer men he has worked with and trusts a huge career opportunity and 2-3 times salary?

One of their safety’s got hurt and is out for the season. Line probably the way it is bc Clemson is at home an ranked higher. Also FSU didn’t play well on the road against BC. Game was tied till Winston hit Greene on a hill marry to take the lead at half. Although they never trailed again BC kept it close an interesting.
Ron your knocking Rivals is amasing!! They(Rivals) have SU rated lousey for years. From SU’s record they have been right on. SU is below .500 since Coach P. firing. Enough said!! 48 is way to high for this class. Yes there is a couple of players there, but way to many projects there to.
