Florida CB Deion Hallmon Decommits from Rutgers; Syracuse Back In?

Deion Hallmon decommits from Rutgers and makes Syracuse the first stop on his visiting tour.

SuperPreps

2014 Cypress Bay cornerback Deion Hallmon decommitted from Rutgers Sunday, which allows Syracuse to get back in the running for the 3-star Weston, FL product. Hallmon told The Fizz back in July the Orange made his top five school list for his college football destination. Arguably a top 50 CB in the country, he still has the attention of top-tier schools. Now that the speedy corner has reopened his recruitment, SU has to take advantage.

Hallmon committed back on August 26th to Rutgers, a program he has yet to even visit. He doesn’t make his first official visit until October 25.

Hallmon told NJ.com a few weeks back about the mix-up: “I was supposed to come up for the Arkansas game, but I take my ACT¬†this Saturday. But I’m coming up for the Houston game though. When I come up it’s gonna be freezing.‚Äù

Rutgers defeated Arkansas on September 21 but didn’t succeed on Hallmon’s services. The Scarlet Knights take on Houston late in the fall, now with an uncertain Hallmon coming through. What exactly led to his decommitment is a mystery. What could have turned Hallmon off about Rutgers? The chance to play in the Big 10 and compete, especially as a defensive player, against some of the most dynamic offensives, like Northwestern, is a great challenge. Hallmon checked out Syracuse as his first, official visit on September 13. He plans to visit another member of his top five, Wisconsin, on October 12. Not much has been heard from Florida State or West Virginia, the other schools that round out his prospective schools.

According to the NJ.com report, Hallmon has battled an injured hamstring to start his senior stint. His fight and toughness on the field, though, have helped him weather the storm. Durability easily attracts a swarm of college programs. Hallmon was a full-time starter last season and finished with seven interceptions. He told The Fizz of his sharp awareness back when we last spoke:

“I’d say I’m very aggressive, especially in man defense. I like to cover the best receiver of the opposing team. I’m also good at reading the defense in zone coverage. Either way, I’m very aggressive in the backfield on D.”

A smart corner with a 4.40 40-yard dash is hard to come by. Hallmon has widened his play this season seeing time on the offensive end in multiple scheme packages, including the Wildcat and special teams. He remains very close with OC George McDonald thanks to “The Mailman’s” previous ties with Miami.

Hopefully SU’s recent check with Hallmon earlier this month had a significant impact on him. The Orange marked his first and most recent campus visit. Hallmon’s decision to decommit not only opens up his top five, but other top programs such as Clemson and Notre Dame climb into the discussion. The fact Syracuse was his first visit reassures that Hallmon does have significant interest in the program. He also mentioned playing in the cold. Yeah, Syracuse gets pretty damn freezing, but a closed-roof Carrier Dome becomes a solid pitch.

For now, the top dogs look to be Wisconsin and the Scarlet Knights. Hallmon provides some newly added versatility and continues to impress as a gutsy force in the secondary. When it comes to shutdown guys in the defensive backfield, SU is always listening. Keep an eye on November 16, when Syracuse travels down to the Sunshine State to play Florida State. Hallmon has already expressed noteworthy interest in the Seminoles. With news of his decommitment, the Orange shouldn’t blink to stay high on Cypress Bay’s defensive leader.

    Ha Ha I wouldn’t touch this kid with a 10ft pole!!The whole RU rivals board cheered when I went to see their reaction!Might be the flakiest recruit Ive ever seen in 20 years and I think he is UNRELIABLE…now hes visiting Wisconsin and wants to take LOTS of officials and wont commit anywhere till NSD!Hey,I don’t blame him for taking a lot of free trips but quit taking 50+ schools for the ride!Lets invest in solid kids.I bet in the end he don’t leave Fla!Malone had this guy pegged months ago!

  2. Russell Stugots Avatar

    DA,I think your wrong on this one but I agree we should keep an eye on him!We can’t let one guy take up more time than he might be worth!Something is funny about this kid with half the BCS school offers(are they real?) and still playing for the other 50+ schools!Enough of these circus type “recruits”lol!Lets hook someone solid and taller!How many medium 3*s have over 50 offers?Lets get Clemson this week and impress Holley!

  3. Ron Avatar

    If this kid is as bad as people make him out to be,and only cares about himself instead of the team. Then I say let the kid go,we don’t need a recruit here that is going to screw up the chemistry or the foundation of the program that Coach Shafer is trying to build here. If he thinks NJ & Rutgers is freezing,then he should go to sunny Wisconsin with it’s blue sky and 75-80 degree temperatures year round.

    Ron,Pasqualoni was fired 10 minutes ago at UConn after they asked him to dump GDeLeone last year and he just moved him to from OL coach to OC!What Offense?Isn’t that why we canned him?

  5. Ron Avatar

    @ussell Stugots;

    I’m sorry to hear that Russell,but after their loss over the weekend I thought it was just a matter of time before UCONN dropped the hammer on him.

    The chants to get rid of Mac Brown of the Texas Longhorns are getting louder and louder. Fans just don’t realize Russ that all programs go through their highs and lows. I guess paying a coach $5.5 million a year doesn’t guarantee you job anymore. They have to win and if they don’t their gone.

    The dude my infact be flaky but I cant be mad at the kid for wanting to explore HIS options for where to attend and play. Truthfully most kids probably shouldn’t commit to schools prior to NSD. I mean its one of the biggest decisions in your life…think it through. Talent wise he seems like a good prospect for a secondary that could use help. I dont know about any other red flags but if he checks out….continue recruit him..

  7. Russell Stugots Avatar

    Ron,whats up with BOB offering Jason Cabinda our NJ LBer recruit after he gaves us a solid verbal?Would they offer not feeling he would accept?I knew they “PSU” needed LB help and this year not many good ones are available but you’d think they could find their own after they miss on there top targets?This is why they needed the death penalty!!Its a cult and ONLY FB matters to them!

  8. Russell Stugots Avatar

    I dont blame him for the visits…just the mind games!If you follow recruiting you’d know what I mean!We don’t have the luxury of wasting time on fickle kids when no ones bigger than the program!

  9. Ron Avatar

    @Russell Stugots;

    After Cabinda committed to Syracuse,there were people who posted here that said they didn’t think he was worthyof the scholarship.

    Shortly afterwards another story I read was how his stock was on the rise and more schools were after him.

    I personally wrote Jason Cabinda a letter and thanked him for committing to Syracuse,I told him he was an outstanding young man because of the work he does with community service in helping people in need.

    The strongest comment I made to him was,the Orange Nation woukld be very proud of seeing him in a Syracuse uniform.

    He will stay committed to Syracuse,not because of the letter that I wrote,but because of the fine university that is Syracuse and the chance he has to come in and play as a true freshman.

    Looking forward Russell to seeing this young man in Orange and Blue uniforms next year.

    Let’s beat Clemson on Sarturday;

    @Russell Stugots;

    If you remember Russ after Jason committed to Syracuse I made the comment that he might be the key that unlocks the door to the recruits in NJ.

    It’s just a gut feeling but I believe that Kurt Holuba and Juwann Winfree are two of the targets that might/will commit to the orange before it’s all over and done with.

    I really hope Russ that the Orange kicks Clemsons a$$ this weekend.

    DA: How silent our board is today concerning fired coaches! Iremember on this board, many were calling for SU to Hire..let me list them:
    1. skip Holtz
    2. Lane Kiffin
    3. Turner Gill
    4. Mike Locksley
    Did I forget anyone? All these coaches were getting touted instead of Marrone…They all were fired and or did terrible jobs. Marrone…gets promoted to the NFL as the Bills head man. Su..and Dr. Gross’s choice of Marrone atr the time…looks very good now doesn’t it?

    Ron,if SU had a couple hundred more fans like you,Terry,Malone and a few more that escape me(CuseDontLuse)who do more than cheer(like me)we’d be selling out every game!Kudo’s to you’s guys who keep guys like me motivated and hopeful!How many take the time to send personal letters?Im proud to be friends with you guys!!I don’t think JC will flip either but I just didn’t like PSU’s(BOB)audacity after Dougie stayed away from his FAs after they were put on sanctions!

    Look if this kid is good enough its ok for SU. But these kind of players can have a negative effect to. If they sign on at a quality program with other players as good or better than him they will quiet him down alot quickly. If he thinks he’s the next coming on Neon Deon on a team with limited talent he will be a stone in the teams shoes!! I’ve seen it before. HCSS seems like a no nonsense kind of guy and doesn’t like these kind of players. But if he commits to SU and honesty wants to be here, I’m sure HCSS talked to Hallmon about his attitudes and they might be an issue to the team. But before he signs he needs to be aware of the sincere program needs!! Other programs do it so I’m sure HCSS would to!!

    @Russell Stugots;

    Russell thanks for your comments,but please it’s you that motivates guy’s like me,really you do. For me Russell getting to know you because we have/share a common love for Syracuse Football is more than I could have ever dreamed possible.

    I know that’s a little mushy but that’s how I feel. Talking with the members of this group has been and will always be a honor for me. I tell all of my friends about this website and how great the debates are between the members,and if they’re interested ,should join the group for some discussion.

    The roads that you and I took growing up Russell are damn close to being identical. I wish that you and I would have crossed roads back when we were just entering our teen years. The friendship formed between us would have lasted us a lifetime. I’m proud Russell to call you FRIEND,real proud.

    Oh!!! I forgot to mention,Syracuse will kick Clemsons ass on Saturday. Got that Terry? Hear me roar,”Syracuse will kick Clemson’s backside on Saturday”.

    Hey, RU is still recruiting CB’s because they knew he was going to decommit. The writing was on the wall when he didn’t visit and RU just got heavenly involved with a top CB from Maryland who is a better prospect than Dieon. I’m not knocking the kid because he does have talent, but the kid is leading people on with his recruitment. He is holding out for a FSU offer. He doesn’t want to play in cold weather. A lot of RU fans never wanted this kid and with the recent news of this other stud, we started celebrating.

  17. Ron Avatar

    @Mademan;

    Thanks for giving us the lowdown on this kid, He must think the teams in the NFL are all in Florida and California. That’s why I’m a little confused about his interest in Wisconsin. The kid does seem a little flakey.

    Where ever he decides to go,I hope he’s happy with the program.

  18. Alan Pavon Avatar

    Syracuse is a Bball school and has been ever since the MacPherson days and even then, it was Bball first. Football is a ha-ha at The Cuse but I do hope you beat Clemson on Saturday. As for “Deion and the Belmonts”, he would be good at Cuse b/c you play indoors. Oh, and one last thing….Doug Marrone is an arrogant SOB and what did he do at Cuse that was so wonderful? Returning to mediocrity is not achieving the objective….but then again, we are talking about Syracuse football where that is the standard….

  19. Ron Avatar

    @Alan Pavon;

    I look at Syracuse Athletics as a whole package. Let’s take a look at the two schools that you’ve mentioned in your post.

    I agree that Syracuse Basketball is one of the top 5 programs in America and Coach Boeheim has built a program that spoils the daylights out of the fans by winning 20+ games a year during the last 25 years.
    So please let me ask, has Clemson even come close to what Syraxcuse gives it’s fans? I didn’t think so.

    Syracuse has won National Championships in both basketball and football. Has Clemson done the same? What did you just say? NO,I didn’t think so. What school shows mediocrity? I know it isn’t Syracuse. We may be a little down in football right now,but we’re on the right track to turn this program around. Now remember I don’t want you running away from us after you get dumped on on Saturday. We’ll talk some more after Syracuse beats Clemson .

  20. Ron Avatar

    @Alan Pavon;

    I forgot to mention;Syracuse leads the series between the schools in football 1-0.

    Syracuse was a mediocre team back in 1996 when we destroyed Clemson in the Gator Bowl down in Jacksonville Florida. After the game on Saturday Syracuse will lead the series 2-0. Priceless man,JUST PRICELESS.

  21. Ron Avatar

    @Russell Stugots;

    I find it awful funny Russell that people have always down played the recruits that we go after. Some fans making statements we’re getting nothing of value. It’s amazing that other schools are offering scholarships to our recruits like Jason Cabinda and Corey Cooper. Am I missing something here? It appears to me that the coaching staff is targeting and going hard after the right recruits and feel we as fans should let them do their jobs.

  22. Mademan Avatar
    Mademan

    Cabinda is was not recruited the way he should. He is probably the second best LB in NJ this year. Penn State, Wisconsin, RU, and Nebraska have offered but he has remained solid like a rock. Kid’s a beast and I think Coach Flood is goi.g to regret it. Your coach has to see talent with his eyes. Problem is that people are brainwashed with all these recruiting sites and it creates a perception. Look at my program in RU and all the 4 star bust players. Tom Savage, DeAntwan Williams, Miles Shuler, Marqiuse Wright and the list goes on. Look at our starting RB Paul James who is a walkon and he lead the nation in rushing at one point. Recruiting is a dice game.

    Like I said many times the DOME made JB’s program. And again the DOME was built for SUFB!! SUBB games at the DOME was an after thought!!
    Ron sorry Clemson will rout SU(I hope I’m wrong)!! The talent ratio from Clemson is way ahead of SU’s talent!! Love to get ya going Ron but your HOMER side always shows. Yes it hurts when I’m wrong. Will it hurt you this Saturday!!

    I don’t trust many NJites!! After all they eat too many affected clams and their vision is not always correct!! Plus Rutgirls breeds there!! YUCK!!

    Who is this Alan Pavon character? Troll. Glad you hope we beat Clemson. Where do your aligences lie? At least Mademan wears his colors, and always offers good insight from another perspective. I am just assuming you are a Rutgers fan Mr. Pavon due to the article you are commenting on. Talk about a smug SOB? What did Schiano ever acheive? guys about to get himself fired, and he went .500 beating FCS schools. Don’t think he ever won a BE championship either. Good luck with the future, maybe one day you too can attain mediocrity. In football. I don’t think you can hope to acheive what SU has done in other sports, such as Bball, Lax, wrestling, Field Hockey…

    Apologies to Mademan, especially if this troll is not an RU fan. Show your colors Mr. Pavon, mine is Orange.

  25. Russell Stugots Avatar

    Yeah Malone,I couldn’t figure out who he(Pavon)represented?Ron started with the Clemson stuff but why would he want us to beat them?Then I though RU but most are outspokenly RU fans?BC?UConn?WVU?

    I know Terry,at times it reasl easy for me to get irratated. If Syracuse loses to Clemson this weekend,I expect a bunch of crap from everyone because of the stance that I’ve taken on this game. All I can say is bring it on man,BRING IT ON!!

    On the other side of the equation Terry,you know what your going to get from me if SYRACUSE DOES WIN THE GAME? RRRRRIIIIIGGGGGGGHHHHHTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT.

    I’m really looking forward to Saturday,it’s just isn’t coming fast enough.
