Corey Cooper represents the new face of Syracuse recruiting. The wideout with a 4.58 40 could be an absolute force for the passing game, and a potentially high-scoring offense down the road. He had almost 20 offers last fall, including SEC schools like South Carolina and Tennessee. But he could also be the ultimate exploding cigar, a warning to be careful what you step into.
As Syracuse.com noted this week, Cooper’s recruitment is now back open since he did not qualify academically. He’ll be playing at Jireh Prep in Matthews, NC to prepare for D1. But even though Cooper was an SU signee, now he gets put back into the pool for the Class of ’14. So he’s heard from¬†South Carolina, North Carolina, Mississippi State and Maryland since he did not qualify.
He says he’s still committed to SU, but admits he’ll be listening to other offers when they come through the door.
“I have no choice but to talk to them if they come to the school,” Cooper told The Post-Standard/syracuse.com in a text message. “And you know I’m always all ears.”
The 5’11” burner from Raleigh was a highly-sought after recruit coming out of high school, and switched his pledge from Louisville. Since Scott Shafer has taken over, the Orange coaching staff has looked well beyond SU’s normal recruiting reach of the northeast and Florida. Syracuse doesn’t normally get kids out of the Carolinas, especially ones this good. And wideouts seem to have a hankering for playing for George McDonald, a former wide receiver coach.
But when you recruit players who won’t qualify academically, you are risking investing plenty of time, resources (and a scholarship on Signing Day) for a player who may end up as another school’s property.
It’s the right idea to be reaching new places for athletes for the ACC. Quarterback A.J. Long told The Fizz the coaching staff admitted to him it needs to target much better players for the heightened competition. And sometimes that means taking a chance on a kid with questionable grades. But do it too often and it can leave you burned when your highly sought-after signees ends up with other teams, and your left needing to fill that hole again.

So he is going to stay committed, but has no choice into listening to others. That makes a lot of sense.
That’s like me saying I’m getting married but if another girl comes calling I will be seeing her.
My hope is that Corey’s a man of his word and stay’s committed to Syracuse.
DA, great article. You’re right: playing in a tougher league means SU is going to have to gamble with some kids with shaky grades. The reality is that Cooper is 50/50 to still come to SU. If he has a good PG season, an SEC school may make him an offer he can’t refuse. SU has to stay on him, but yes, all the effort could be futile.
SU has taken chances in the past, and some, like Malcolm Cater, did explode in their faces. Others have not. Sometimes you can’t tell who is a knucklehead until they get on campus. That’s one of the tough parts of coaching. They have to trust 18-22 year old kids to make the right choices when they are presented opportunities to do something wrong on a pretty regular basis.

Great post,agree with all of it. I’m just wondering if maybe the athletes were to get some of all those $ Billions of dollars that the NCAA collects on a regular basis,that maybe a large part of these type of problems disappear.

Like HCSS says if you don’t want to be here @ SU then “See Ya”! Yes they took a chance on Cooper. And now taking feelers from other programs. But that’s his right!! But still no real class on his part. I don’t think SU needs him either if he’s looking else where!!
Recruiting’s never over until the fax arrives with the signature. If they hadn’t recruited Cooper, they would have likely signed a much lower grade receiver. It’s worth the occasional gamble, and SU needs to gamble a bit if they’re going to become more competitive at this stage.

I think Terry that your reading the story on Corey the wrong way. He’s not looking to go to another school,other schools have become interested in the 4* WR Corey Cooper.
I want to take this oppourtunity to comapre Corey Coopers situation to Shutang Mungwa.
We both were a little down after we both were told that Mungwa was leaving the program to follow his true love of music and Corey didn’t enroll at school because of grades.
Shu Mungwa had a SAT score of 1700 and a GPA of 3.8 in high school. A 3.8 average=an A grade,and was refused entry into Stanford.
Corey Coopers grades wasn’t made public,but we were told he missed by a couple of point from being eligible for college. If Shu Mungwa couldn’t get in with those grades,then what the hell’s expected for all of the other students?
Are people trying to tell me that non athletic students are far far superior to the athletes? Their grades are better.What then are they asking. Do you think entry into college is harder for athletes than a non athlete? Does a double standard exist?
So I want to ask people who have taken the SAT & ACT test and have qualified for college.What kind of marks do you need to get into college? It appears to me that both of these young men were qualified for entrance into college. What am I missing here? Please explain it to me.

Let there be no mistake about my comments on a 4* WR named Corey Cooper. Corey will be electrifying on the field no matter where he decides to play at the D1 level. let’s all hope he decides to stay at Syracuse.
I think they need to change the rule about being able to open their recruitment back up if they do not qualify and have to attend prep school. I also believe they should have an early signing period just like in basketball. It will eliminate all of the flip flopping.
Glad you guys enjoyed the piece. It’s frustrating if you’re an SU fan (or coach) to watch a player commit and sign with SU (after a ton of hard work by the coaches) only to maybe end up elsewhere. But it’s the NCAA rules and he has that right… although maybe it’s something that could be altered in the future? Not sure… but maybe worth looking into.

Russ,I haven’t heard a thing on Winfree or Ollison. Their either real shy and keeping their thoughts to themselves or there’s an awful lot of soul searching going on with these two about where they want to play football. From what I’ve read about Hilliman and Blacknall,Syracuse never had a chance with either of those guys.
Me too!! I think the Penn St game is going to be the opener that we’ve missed out on, for way to long. If we win,I believe that we will beat Northwestern and be undefeated and rested(by week) going into the Clemson Game.
We still have a majority of the team that destroyed Louisville in the dome and WVA in the Pinstripe Bowl. They know what it’s going to take to beat those teams and I believe Coach shafer is going to have them ready for the season.

Remember in your youth(many moons ago) when we were 6/7 yrs old and watching the bigger guys hitting each other on the playgounds. But we played the little boy FB in the back ground. But finally we got bigger and started to knock heads with our older age groups!! Man what differnce in size and speed we quickly found out. Well SU is out of that sess-pool of the BIG LEAST and now is playing quality CFB!! SU will not beat 2/3’s of the ACC teams if they played Toledo like the played Toledo last couple of years!! The ACC move is for SUFB and in the LONG run its the best move. But not maybe(?) ths year. 6-6 is the best by far!!
