Syracuse keeps growing its ’14 verbal commitments before the start of the season. Three-star defensive back¬†Lamar Dawson is SU’s ninth commit. He’s¬†6’0″, 190 pounds, and plays cornerback for St. Rita of Cascia of Chicago. He also had offers from Cincinnati, Michigan State, Central Michigan and Western Michigan.
He told Syracuse.com,¬†“I went to Michigan State; it was good. But I didn’t know how early I would play. I went to Syracuse, and they had two seniors in front of me. I felt like it’s the earliest chance for me to play.”
Dawson echoed something Syracuse should be selling: playing time. With a move to the ACC the staff should be mining for all types of talent, and promise getting on the field for all incoming players.
It also reinforces this coaching staff looking outside the normal recruiting area for the Orange. Dawson is the second Illinois product on the Class of ’14 commit list (Colton Moskal is the other). Parris Bennett is a Detroit native, and A.J. Long is from Tennessee. SU is also looking at Aaron Roberts in the Windy City.
More traditionally stocked recruiting areas are smart places for SU to work now that it has a more national profile with better exposure in the ACC. The defensive backfield is also a good place on the depth chart to be getting talent, because opposing offenses are now more potent. Dawson is a good get for the Orange on many fronts.

Ok what the hell goes on here DA?? Is he 6’0″ and 190 lbs or as Rivals says he’s 5’11” and 177 lbs!! Your option says alot better, but I’d go with the sites because they don’t have anything to lose if they tell the true facts on a recruit!! Some where Long is listed at 5’11”, but the majority have him taller than that. I hope so. Please no more short wounded duck throwers(Paulus) here, please!!
@Terry, Rivals isn’t the only recruiting site, why don’t you check espn and scout and draw your own conclusion. They say 6′ 190 this kid had 8 ints last year and led all of IL maybe that should be discussed too
Yeah, diff, sites have diff. listings for him… not all that uncommon. Sometimes they use older stats from a soph or junior year…
WoooW easy up there!! Finally SU gets a CB/S verbal bigger than 5’10” and I question it. I understand the height/weight game through out the footbal community. I just ask for REAL #’s on these facts. Its nice to see SU get a player of his size instead of smaller players. Since the movement at national WR’s is over 6′ and 200lbs!! It will catch up with ya if you only have smaller DB’s back there!! Especially in the ACC!!

Just so you guys know, the average NFL CB is 5’11.
I am from Chicago and have seen him play. Very solid player from the Chicago Catholic League Blue division. For those of you that do not know, St. Rita also plays Mt. Carmel (McNabb’s alma mater), who also happens to have Matt Domer (former SU recruit who chose Illinois). I watched him against Loyola Academy last year, he bit on a few fakes, but his talent is there and with coaching will be a very good player for SU. GO CUSE!!!

Thanks for giving us some good news on Lamar Dawson. Don’t take the comments on this website the wrong way. There are a few who post here that likes to post on a recruit that they’ve never seen play.
I’m sure Lamar is going to be an asset to the Orange Football Team. Can’t wait for him to come to the upstate region. He’s going to love it here. And we the fans are going to watch him help transform Syracuse into a national power again.

conclusion,I’ll take a kid like lamar any day of week. I’m glad he chose Syracuse.

conclusion–I can’t begin telling you what I really think about those two statements.
I know that people want recruits in here that are faster than a speeding bullet,
stronger than a locomotive and able to leap tall buildings in a single bounce,stand 10′ tall and weigh 500 lbs. anything short of that size is not acceptable here.
But you see,I live in realville and I know that we’re never going to get a recruit that size and run a 2-3.0 40 yard dash.
But I will take all of the kids that play the game with heart,no matter what their position are on the team.
I just want to be the first to welcome Lamar Dawson to the Orangenation. I know with guys like Lamar on the team,Syracuse will transform and become a contender shortly.

That aggression paid off for the Syracuse defense a season ago as they finished with 100 tackles for a loss, ranking them sixth in the country. The Orange were 48th in total defense. They were No. 1 in the country in fourth-down percentage defense, with opponents converting only two of 10 fourth-down attempts.
Heart,players that play the game with heart,are all winners as far as I’m concerned. Can’t wait for the season to start.
