Miami’s Q-Dog: Syracuse Targets South Florida QB/ATH Quinton Flowers

The Orange are up against some of the nation’s elite for the dual threat QB.

What does Syracuse have in common with Alabama and Clemson?

All three are in the hunt for wide receiver Quinton Flowers from Miami (FL) Jackson High School. Flowers is 6’0” 203 lbs. and committed to USF in mid-June, but decommitted shortly afterward.

Flowers is listed as a wide receiver by Scout.com, and ESPN lists him as an athlete. There’s a few positional options for him at the college level. At Jackson he plays quarterback in a tough, physical, mobile style.

Once he breaks free from the pocket and scrambled through defenders he is very difficult to take down. He also has the speed and footwork to be an option at wideout. His quickness allows him to break open and run crisp routes.

The list is long for Flowers and there’s already major competition for the three-star player.

He has received offers from Alabama, Cincinnati, Clemson, East Carolina, Illinois, Kentucky, Marshall, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, USF, Syracuse, TCU, Texas, UCF and West Virginia, according to Scout.

Syracuse already has a quarterback commit in A.J. Long and is still looking at JR Zazzara from CBA. Sean White from Boca Raton is no longer in the mix after recently committed to play for Auburn.

A power rankings story on Bleacher Report lists Flowers as the No. 10 quarterback in the ’14 recruiting class, describing him as a dual-threat quarterback.

He ran a 4.72 40, according to ESPN Recruiting Nation. It’s not surprising Syracuse is in this race considering the connection to South Florida that George McDonald has. The Mailman has delivered many times already for the Orange, but beating Alabama, Clemson and Texas to a player would be the biggest package of them all.

    @Gilbert, I have no doubt AJ Long would beat him out on the depth chart.

    Stop the Zarrara thing. He’s not top D-1 material. Holley gone to!! BYE!! OL,TE and size/speed are what SU needs now!! Good class so far, but not a program builder kind of accomplishment as of yet??? This kid and his 4.7/4.8 speed not super(?) for athlete, but for another position maybe!!! It looks so far the shotgun approach is not totally working for HCSS and Coach McD on recruiting. Bigger names(local and far away) say no way to SU. Just hope the time put into no-gos like Holley doesn’t bite SU in the A$$!! Instead of going other places!! I think Coach McD has seen that SU right now is quite a challenge on recruiting. Maybe more than he thought!!

    Why is Holley a no go and why do you sound douchey about it?

    Because he is douchey. This team is doing just fine in recruiting with HCSS and the Mailman doing their thing. GO SU

    Beat Penn State

    Couple of worries if we are really on these guys. I have a gut feelilng that Mavety is a heavy FSU lean, and that Custis is leaning Pitt’s way. Ollison is in my mind between us and Pitt, Witter between us and Rutgers, Hallmon goes to any FL school that offers, so FSU is at the top of his top five too. I think we still have a good shot at all of them, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. I have not heard much on Sykes in a while other than he’s going to Minnesota for camp this weekend.

    In all of this recruiting agony ..and it is agony if you are a Cuse fan, I think the key recruit for us is Ollison. The kid has the size and speed we are looking for in the style offense we want to run. The kid is from Buffalo!!!! We have to get great talented kids from Buffalo. He is the type of recruit we have always gotten. We get him, then Witter from South Florida, our situation at RB is solid for a few years.
    We need some OL/DL help to make a big splach in the ACC….Go Cuse

    Also on Ollison, ties to that area/program might help to strengthen ties with Wheatley, as odd as that sounds. I think we will need all the help we can get there, but that is the icing on the cake, not the reason we want Ollison. Ollison is high quality in his own right.

    I agree with Bill in this. We need big OL & DL. Have not seen any quality recruiting commit s in these areas. How can Temple out recruit SU for an offensive lineman?

    Come on kiddies(Tnut & 44notever), because research says he’s pushing aside SU. HE DOESN”T WANT SU and I and HCSS don’t want him if thats true=pay attention. HCSS has said before he wants players who want to be at SU if not go else where. Love that!!! Other coaches(Moore) have said that to. Mavety is doing his games to-let him go as well. Put that wasted time on Mavety to better use on other out of state talent. Both of them have nearly said they are not interested in joining the NYS family at SU why chase them. Ollison is in the same boat. Jerking SU around!! First interested then SU is a bottom feeder for him. The Gronkowskis(sic) kids were from Buffalo to, other than the old man none of them came close to coming to SU. This problem is getting worse by the years. Yet we got foolish fans/media that just bury their heads in the sand and hope this important problem will go away. It won’t and history shows that!! Well it started in the Coach P era and is getting worse every year. SU does get NYS talent sure, but the cream goes else where. Am I wrong!! NO!! WAKE UP!!!

    Terry see what I mean about 4.6 being real fast?This kid wr/qb/ath is heavily sought after at a “listed” 4.72?Is that his “best” time?Getting 4.4 guy’s by the bushel is a fantasy even for the track team!Nd and Ala ain’t even pulling in that type of “real” speed only the rare unusual gem!4.3?Maybe at the olympic’s but not in every day CFB!!It would be nice tho!!

    4.7/4.8 is quite fast if your/me are chasing them. But the SEC and ACC will show us SU fans yes 4.7/4.8 is fast on our beloved team, but they’ll(ACC,SEC) still run away from SU players to. The real issue with speed is does the player have the god given ability to go with it. In our youth we always had buddies who could run like the wind but just didn’t have the “it” of ability!! So we know what that’s all about!!

    Once again, the fizz proving it has no idea what is going on with recruiting. Syracuse has not bee involved with Flowers at all since they offered. Syracuse will also never offer Zazzara and have never shown legit interest. So ridiculous what this site makes up all the time. I’m still wondering why people read this crap on a regular basis. Never based in reality or what is actually going on.

  14. Ron Avatar

    @Frank;

    To be honest,this is the first news that I’ve heard on Flowers,it would be fantastic if he decided to commit to Syracuse,but as far as Zazzara goes,he was offered a scholarship and has commited to play lacrosse at Syracuse. I really don’t see Coach Desko or Shafer getting together and agreeing to let him try football.

    But your statement suggesting Syracuse hasn’t been involved with Flowers since they offered. How do you know that? Are you a traveling companion that goes with the coaches when they visit these recruits? If not,then how in the world can you or anyone make such a foolish statement?

    I don’t know about how the rest of the Fizz Family feels about this young man,but I am one who liked what the Fizz had to say and thanks them for letting us know what kind of kid Syracuse is trying to recruit.

    In stead of dropping by once in a blue moon to voice your opinion,try another website,they will love guys like you joining them.

    Who cares where our recruits come from? As long as they want to represent the school and our history, I could care less if they come from the moon. Any recruit who is willing to put in the hardwork will show promise for ‘cuse football!

    @Ron

    Because I subscribe to Rivals, Scout, 247, and ESPN. All have much better inside info on recruiting than here. I follow everything related to SU and players they’ve offered. They haven’t been involved with Flowers at all. He also has no interest in SU. So having an article here is pointless. It acts as if SU is involved which they aren’t. It’s poor information and shows the fizz has no idea what’s going on with SU recruiting.
