Calling all recruiting experts, there’s a new way of getting the attention of your most desirable players. It’s a proven method with tangible results. And it might just be the most successful tactic of the 21st century. You don’t even have to speak a word to or travel to see the recruit you’re going after. The Twitter-verse has become the hottest new recruiting medium recently, including Syracuse.
In an age of instant attention with “tagging” and non-stop exposure via hashtags Twitter can make all the difference. One of the biggest SU tweeters is 2014 commit AJ Long, who is doing some terrific recruiting of his own. How is he recruiting 4-star OT Chad Mavety?

And AJ is not stopping there. He also wants fans to show the love to his cousin 4-star WR KJ Williams and 3-star LB Colton Moskal after SU’s most recent commit Zaire Franklin pledged to the Orange.

Understandably these are young impressionable students, and it is eight months until Signing Day. These recruits are also receiving the same twitter rap from every school’s fan base. #CuseNation will have to continue to show the love to prospects like Mavety and Williams for another 35 weeks, but players do love the shout outs. Every high profile athlete enjoys the attention. Some ask for a Twitter shout out before they will grant an interview.
It’s an incredible new tool in the recruiting world. But how much should we look into it? Last year, Zach Allen reached out to tons of other recruits on twitter. He seemed to have the Midas touch: whoever he talked with also wanted to go to SU. But in January, after Doug Marrone left the program, Allen de-committed. It shows just how temperamental and ever changing the recruiting landscape is, with or without twitter.
But it does more good than bad. SU`s George McDonald is on twitter, and it`s valuable. Recruits will stay connected with him after he leaves their living rooms on visits. And, you have to admit, he’s just as motivational as he is in person.

The next big thing for Syracuse football may be 2014 dual-threat quarterback AJ Long (Lebanon, TN), who committed late last week during the basketball team’s rout of Seton Hall in the Big East tournament. The hoops squad has given us a little more optimism, but Long’s commitment is another huge win from the weekend.  
Long has been on Syracuse’s radar since May. He was the second 2014 QB to be offered by Doug Marrone. Long had been highly recruited by former OC Nathanial Hackett as well, and despite all the change to the staff, the communication between Long and the university has been solid.
The Orange gains a 6’1” 190 lb. athlete who can both run the ball effectively and pass the football efficiently. Long visited SU for the third time last Wednesday, and he figured third time’s a charm. He got the chance to really evaluate it as a school choice. Long told The Fizz it just clicked:
“I’ve been up to Syracuse twice previously. Both times I fell in love with it. Loved the people. It just felt like home. Third time now, with the new staff, I just wanted to see what things were like and what it was like. Being up there with the entire staff, Coach Shafer, Coach McDonald, and Coach Lester, it was a great day. They are a great bunch of people.”
The new coaching staff continues to prove its worth early in its young, promising tenure. McDonald has become Syracuse’s recruiting guru, and Lester seems to be adding big value as well. He saved Austin Wilson for the 2013 recruiting class. Lester came up clutch again, with the help of social media:
‚ÄúIt was different because I didn‚Äôt know if my offer still stood with the new staff. The week that had happened, Coach Lester hit me up on Facebook, telling me to call him. That day I did and I talked to him and Coach McDonald and Coach Shafer. They all reaffirmed I had the offer from them and they wanted me to get up as soon as possible to meet them and check out the renovations with the ACC move. It was a tough time not knowing, but it was nice to know that‚Äôs reaffirmed.”¬†
What’s very clear here is Shafer will stand by Marrone’s policy of being straight with recruits. Long told The Fizz he appreciated how upfront the staff was with him:
“They’re 100% honest with you the entire time. They’re not going to tell you what you want to hear but what you need to hear. That was the thing that made me want to be there because they have my best interest at heart. That was the reason I committed so early and I felt so strongly that was the right place for me.”
The Orange never lost contact with the Friendship Christian star. Never mind the coaching changes, Long moved from Pius X HS in Bangor, PA to Lebanon, Tennessee due to family reasons. It’s a good thing SU didn’t lose sight of Long. He’s pumped about the chance to play in the ACC, and he’s set the bar awfully high for when he comes in:
“It’s a good conference. You’re going to play good football. You’re going to play good teams. Syracuse will be competitive in the ACC, yes. Will they win it? I don’t think so. But our first year on campus, the recruiting class we are building for the 2014 class, our goal is to win the ACC championship as freshmen.”
Long also told The Fizz he‚Äôs already been talking with some of his 2014 colleagues. He‚Äôs connected with¬†SU‚Äôs first commit of ’14 Naesean Howard, and even mentioned WR Steve Ishmael (from Miami, FL and has an SU offer) is interested in playing up at Syracuse. He‚Äôs already anchoring this recruiting class. In terms of his game, Long was sensational for Friendship Christian last season. As a dual threat presence, he posted great numbers on the ground and through the air. He also threw just one interception compared to 37 touchdown passes. Long discussed his one pick in detail wtih¬†The Fizz:¬†
“I think my knowledge of the game is something that really helps me because play snaps, I know what defenses are in, I know what they’re trying to do, and I know what to take advantage of. I think that made it a whole lot easier and it makes my accuracy a whole lot higher. I don’t make the mental mistakes that some do because people don’t know how to read defenses and they make a lot of dumb throws. That one interception, it came from a good pass. It wasn’t a bad decision, it was just somebody else made a play before the ball could get to the receiver. So if that had not happened, maybe right now we’d be talking about no interceptions.”
His attention to detail shows the football IQ of Long. SU was second to UCLA to offer Long. Other offers include Appalachian State, Arizona, and Buffalo. But top BCS schools like Oregon, Notre Dame, Florida, and USC are just beginning to give the gifted athlete some extra attention. Even with all that, it’s not changing Long’s mind, so he says:
“I’m 100% in on Syracuse. There’s no school that’s going to make me de-commit. There’s no school in the country that can sway me to look at my decision and try to change it. Everyone talks about Syracuse basketball, Syracuse lacrosse. But when you talk to people on campus, everyone is excited about Syracuse football games. It’s the one thing that really goes unnoticed. I don’t want it to be unnoticed by the rest of the country. I want it to be the top thing. I want it to overtake those two. I’m talking about our class, from the kids that I’ve talked to, our freshman/sophomore year, we want to win the ACC championship. But our junior/senior year, we want to take it to the national championship and win it.”
With Syracuse basketball prepping for its first round battle with Montana in the NCAA tournament, and the lax squad streaking into Providence tonight with four consecutive wins, life’s good On the Hill. Long wants Syracuse football to return to the dominance it once possessed. He says McDonald wants him to become a “football junky.”
“He said if he’s the office at 6 o’clock, I should be in the office by 6:15/6:30 sitting with him before his class or before workouts. That was his biggest point. If you turn out to be like a Kellen Moore, like Matt Barkley, you’re a big name, you’re a hot commodity. It helps you because you not only know your scheme, but you learn other team’s tendencies.”
Gotta love it. Long could be the next big thing for Syracuse. The attention he’s grabbing from top schools, to wave them off, and remain devoted to SU is saying a lot. Long-term, the star-studded QB wants to put Syracuse football on the next level:
“It’s not a matter of whether you are noticed right now, but it’s about what you do in college. You get there and it’s a great program, but when you leave you want to make it a better program than when you found it.”

I’ve read AJ’s cousin is Jarod West. He has another cousin KJ Williams who is a 4 star WR. KJ has told him if SU offers he will commit so they can play together
So excited about AJ’s commitment. He looks awesome and love his attitude. He is right, Cuse Nation is hungry for some good football and the ACC. I went to the NC State basketball game in Raleigh last year and there had to be 5,000 SU fans at the game. Football recruiting and exposure is going to go up big time. This kid is really good,he throws a 40-45 yard pass just as easy as a pitcher throws a ball to home plate. Let’s hope that he doesn’t pull a “Zach Allen” on us.
Coach Shafer and staff have gone after some big time recruits already this year. If a few of those 4* star athletes commit to Syracuse,then the next 4-5 years of Syracuse Football ought to be real interesting.

You had asked about the WBB Team and wondered whey would be seeded. when talking to the girls, they all thought hat they would be the 7th seed and playing in the Kentucky Regional. I then looked at the ESPN web site and they had Syracuse as the 7th seed playing WVA in the Raleigh NC Regional.
After the pairings were announced on MNonday they ended up as the 7th seed against the 10 seeded Creighton in the Oklahoma city Regional. I guess that just goes to show everyone,the pundits on ESPN really guess as to what’s going on. They shouldn’t be saying anything until the selection committee is done selecting the teams.

He hit it right on the head. SU’s talk is about SUBB and SULAX. But he wants to change that. Thank god some one sees that and mentions it as well. I have said if the SUFB program succeeds( much better than .500) the other program will get better as well. College football is # 1. Recruits see that SUBB this and that and their interest is chased away. Our best NYS HS talent shows that. I doubt that if SUFB was a solid top 20/10 team we would loose as many NYS kids!! Its time to build SUFB and HCSS is the man!!

I feel that Syracuse is lucky to have great athletic teams that represent the School and the community well. How can anyone brush off a team that has won a National Championship in basketball,10 National Championships in lacrosse,and women’s teams that represent the School and the City of Syracuse in the NCAA’s in softball,field hockey and lacrosse? I think Terry you need to readdress the way you think. In my opinion all of the teams representing Syracuse University are important and need to b e addressed in one form or the other.
Over this past winter during our lively debates as to who was going to be our starting QB come this fall,my thoughts were Charlie Loeb as the starter with John Kinder as the backup. Everyone please go to the syr.com web site and read the story that was posted about Charlie Loeb. it makes for real good reading and it also backs up my point that Charlie will be the starting QB come August 31st against Penn State.
I get what he is saying though, Syracuse Football needs to be a prime time sport because Football is a prime time sport everywhere else.

I agree with Terry in that Syracuse football is the missing piece of the puzzle. You get football back to where it used to be, with lacrosse, basketball and even soccer the olympic sports getting better, and you’re talking about one formidable athletic department.
I’m not the biggest baseball fan, but going into the ACC I think it would be great if we fielded a program. I’d like to see a men’s hockey team too.

Derek your right but title 9 will kill any growth in men’s sports at SU. But at the same time there’s more women sports than men. Yet men’s bring in the most $$$$$$!!
Ron you just proved my point!! You didn’t mention SU’s lone Football Championship in 1959. That’s my favorite NC of them all so far. Even though that’s dinosaur time!!! God knows how I would feel if SU won a NC in the coming years. College football is # 1 and that won’t change. For SU to improve SU has to equalize the interest of all major sports.

The way I’m reading you point is that you want everyone to always talk football. The point I’m trying to make is that Syracuse Athletics is good very good and shouldn’t be dismissed. Football is and always has been the driving force behind everything Orange except and I repeat except during the GROB era when basketball was king. During that period of time basketball generated more money than the football team did.
But the way I look at it is just like all other sports,football is played during 10 week season in the fall. When the season is over we move onto the next sport. Terry,thanks to Coach Shafer this is the earliest that we the fans have talked about the recruits that he and his staff have gone after. I can remember going back to Coach P and Coach Mac’s time as coach’s that the fans would always talk about Syracuse Basketball and always making the statement,boy I can’t wait for the basketball season to start. Lately I’ve noticed that things have changed a bit,the fans are now talking football during the basketball season. As the season chugs along and Coach Shafer gets some of these 4* athletes to come to Syracuse,it will be awful hard for anyone to keep the fans quiet about the team once they become a force. I’m looking forwards to it,aren’t you?
Terry,I haven’t forgotten the 1959 football team being National Champions either.
I looked forward to SUBB too after SUFB was over, but we had teams then!! But as SUFB under Coach P to GROB and yes your man dougie the state of SUFB declined to way below standards. I know for a strong fact and it pissed me off that SU fans literally dropped SUFB because of the loser tag these above coaches gave it. They became SUBB fans and really didn’t give a damn about SUFB. Well we will see if they come back into the fold. My feeling is this anti-FB fan(only because of losing) is why the Dome is 1/2 packed. They jumped to SUBB because they win always. But to me and some others SU and college Football will always be # 1 in college/pro sports not basketball. And I won’t ever give up on that just because SUFB is struggling!! The SUFB program with all its faults is pretty clean from an administration feel. SUBB has had some major issues there and even recently. That plays into it also with my feelings and others to. So yes Mr RON SUFB is the grandfather of all SU sports to me and many others. It put SU on the college sport map-no doubt. Not basketball!! Its just a shame that others have given up on SUFB and jumped on the SUBB ship. If HCSS gets this FB program on solid ground again they’ll come from under their bridges and again root for SUFB. Give’m hell HCSS and staff too!! I got Ronititis here and babbled to much-SORRY!! Can’t wait for August. Tired of this weather!!

for me Terry it’s always been the whole package of Syracuse Athletics that I love and follow. Your right on point in your last post. The fans walked away when the program started to go down hill. I’ve been a season ticket holder for the last 20-25 years and every time I go to a game I notice the fans getting up and leaving the game half way through the 4th quarter. What the hell is that?
I was at the first football game in the dome back in 1980/81 when they played Miami of Ohio. The place was packed with a standing room only crowd of just under 52,000. I remember them saying if we could pack the dome every week the city of Syracuse would put a $1 million into the coffers. I’m afraid those days are gone. Unemployment is down,demographics of the city today is loaded with(foreign nationals)people who just don’t understand the game the way you and I do.
But to your point of always talking football. This has to be an exciting time of year for you and the rest of us. Coach Shafer has ingrained an attitude of “NO SURRENDER ” and isn’t afraid of going after these highly sought after recruits.
To me he’s changed the dynamics within the recruitment of players to come to Syracuse and most of all I think other recruiters from other schools are starting to notice Syracuse University. All we need to do is look at the schools that we’re in battles with trying to get the same recruit.

Russell;I think Coach Shafer and staff has the attitude of being honest and “TAKE NO PRISONERS” is far and away better than the last regime that was led by Coach Marrone.
To be honest,I’m shocked at the players that Shafer has gone after and he seems to still have his foot on the gas pedal pushing it to the floor going full speed ahead.
This weekend with some of those big recruits on campus is going to be real interesting. Let’s hope 2 maybe 3 of those recruits commit to Syracuse during or after they complete their visit.

Russ sometimes it takes time for me to understand on what people are trying to say and sometimes I need a slap up side the noggin for it to sink in. The best weapon that I have to use is current events, and they’re telling me no “SHOWING ME THE DIFFERENCE” between this staff and the last one and I’m enjoying the success that the current staff is having in the 1st quarter of 2013.

Ron,Yeah,I think Dougie did us all a “favor” by quitting on us figuring next season he might get fired w/o Nassib their to bail him out!!Nassib was the difference in a least 2/3 games and yet everyone was blaming him when we started the season slow instead of excoach dm…I couldnt believe it??I knew Ryan was a early 2/3 rd draft choice by the 2nd game and guys right here were calling me nuts?Poor Dougie looked like he was gonna meltdown during a few games….(the only times he showed any emotion),I was worried about his mental health for awhile…He looked like he threw in the towel on coming back after the “every effin year” comment and recruits were’nt buying what he was selling not to mention he was averse to the press and fans and broke his own rules!!
A lot has been made of AJ’s contribution in recruiting and its commendable that he is making an effort but before we give him the medal D’Orange lets see if he has any success. If he can talk any kid into coming I will applaud him but not quite yet.

I don’t mind a player that has committed,try and get other players to commit too. But when he steps out on that limb to help,he better produce results.
In 2012 we were being told about how hard Zach Allen was calling different recruits to come to Syracuse. He decommitted,we didn’t get any recruits,and his crediability was shot.
I’m starting to get concerned with KJ Williams. His words were,if Syracuse offered he would commit immediately afterwards. He hasn’t as of yet and I don’t know if the guy can be trusted or not.

I wish we got him but I’m too happy about Moskal to complain!!lol.

I know I’m going to catch some flack here but let me ask,do we really need KJ Williams? I don’t think the world going to fall apart if he doesn’t come? Let me explain!! Look at the recievers that Syracuse is after out of NJ,Florida,Georgia,and Illinois. A majority of them are over 6’0″ and some go as tall as 6’4″,all have speed and sizeranging from 185 to 210 lbs. If we can get any of those recruits to come here and they produce on the field,then KJ Williams will become just a memory. Boy I wish I hadn’t said that,because I really want KJ to come here in 2014.

Syracuses 2013 offensive line averages 6’3.5″ and goes 293.16 lbs. This unit is going to be a force to be reckoned with and will open holes for the RB’s to run through. Now let’s fast forward a little and add 6’5″ 320 lb OT Jarrell Broxton and 6’6″ 330 lb OG Chad Mavety to this unit. Can you visualize the holes that our RB’s Devante McFarlane,George Morris III,Matt Domer and Travis Lock are going to have to run through and over the opposing defenses in 2014?
If you can’t,just go set in your favorite chair,close your eyes and let your imagination run wild.

Moskal is a good get. I think OCMcD is the guy to give ALL CREDIT to… he’s one of the hotter recruiters in the nation, b4 the SU job.
Take a look at programs like Kentucky, Texas A&M, ND, Clem, Mich, even Alabama… wins, competition, pro prospects & coaches are driving recruiting success. We have ACC- competition. Total: 44-38 ..That’s horrible for Alabama standards.. proving any team can turn it around! Recruiting is just part of it, but college football has cycles! This is the final season of the BCS…The playoffs are close… Saban, even having won a title with LSU in 2003, was 4-5 in bowl games b4 Alabama?
* Kentucky has a current class of 15 so talented, SU’s total 25 schollies, couldn’t compare, maybe even 30 prospects? That’s the kinda splash I envision for a future recruiting class of HCSS…top10-25
