Fizz Five: Counting Down the Most Anticipated Matchups of SU’s ACC Slate

Now that we know Syracuse’s opponents, it’s time to rate just how hyped up they’ll be.

Syracuse basketball to the ACC should now truly be sinking it after the release of the opponents and sites for next season. The Orange will host Pittsburgh, Boston College, Miami, Duke, Georgia Tech, Clemson, UNC, N.C. State, and Notre Dame at the Carrier Dome. SU will play nine ACC road games against Boston College, Pittsburgh, Miami, Duke, Florida State, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Maryland and Virginia.

It’s a new world for the Orange.¬†No more UConn, Georgetown, Villanova, and other long-time rivals. The move will hopefully create new rivalries, maybe with the likes of Duke and UNC. The Fizz¬†breaks down the top five games for the Orange this season.

#5. Maryland

This will be the only time the two will tango as conference rivals. It’s a shame too. The Terps will leave for the Big 10 after the season, but Syracuse-Maryland has always been close enough to make it a great rivalry. Carmelo and plenty of other top SU recruits have come out of the Maryland/Baltimore area. The Terps won the national title the year before Syracuse in ’02. The Comcast Center will be rocking for this matchup. Would be nice to send Maryland off to the B1G with a loss.

#4. Boston College

B.C. hasn‚Äôt been a top national program since the days of Jared Dudley and Tyrese Rice. But the Eagles and Orange had a special rivalry when both were part of the Big East. B.C. is trying to build back its program, and showed signs of life last year. On Jan. 16, Miami only beat BC 60-59 in Chestnut Hill. Feb. 10. Duke won 62-61 at Boston College. Remember, B.C.’s head coach Steve Donohue also knows upstate New York a little. He’s the former coach of Cornell. The New York-Boston rivalry is back, and Boston College becomes SU’s closest geographic conference foe.

#3. Miami

This is another throwback to the Big East pre-2004. The Canes were a conference foe back in the day, and South Florida is home to plenty of Syracuse grads. The game at BankUnited Center will surely have Orange in the house, but last year it actually became a tough place to play for opponents. Miami was the regular season and conference tourney winners in the ACC. If SU wants to win the league, beating UM will be key. While¬†Duke and UNC may be the two games everyone wants to see, don’t sleep on the Hurricanes as one of the best teams in the conference.

#2. UNC

It was a disappointing season for the Tar Heels, but an NCAA tournament team nonetheless. Roy Williams’ squad lost games to the best in the league (Duke and Miami), and tough non-con foes (Butler, Indiana, Texas). UNC’s potential as a rival for the Orange is huge. Both have Hall of Fame coaches. Both land McDonald’s All-Americans. UNC has 18 Final Four appearances, and a ton of history. The Dean Dome and Carrier Dome are two of the largest venues in college hoops. Expect record attendance for this game. There’s also something cool about the color matchup: Orange vs. Carolina Blue.

#1. Duke

Syracuse-Georgetown will always be special. But SU-Duke could grow to be just as hyped a matchup in a few years. Again, two HOF coaches. Two annual Final Four contenders. Otto‚Äôs Army and the Cameron Crazies are two of the loudest and most passionate student sections in the country. It’ll be transfer Mike Gbinije’s first game against his old team, while Syracuse will get to see one of the most talked about recruits in recent years, Jabari Parker.¬†This is another matchup where Syracuse may have to think long and hard about putting the floor in the middle of the Dome, because they could fill 40,000+ for this game.

    Great article young man, great article.
    The Syracuse Fans should be real excited by now after reading the ACC schedule,they should start to jump through rings of fire to get tickets.

    Putting the court in the middle of the dome would give everyone within shouting distance a chance to come watch Duke and North Carolina play in upstate NY. We get Pittsburgh,Boston College,Miami and Notre Dame here. WOW!!!! I thought losing the Georgtown game would hurt. Now I’m saying Georgetown who.

    With the additions of Syracuse,Pittsburgh,Notre Dame and Louisville the ACC automatically becomes the best conference in America. The best.

    The one thing that I really like about all of this is that the Boston College rivalry is going to be renewed and for me that is a good thing.

    Miami game may be a dud – and DEFINITELY will be if Shane Larkin goes pro on Sunday.

    Still think Pitt should be on this list Top 3 since we’ll see them twice so one team will have a revenge factor, and a conference title may be on the line for one of the meetings. No love lost between fan bases here, familiarity be damned.

    @Carlton;

    It won’t be this year Carlton,but in 2015 my wife and I will be at FSU for the game and based on what you’ve told me about the partying that goes on all week before the game,will be there sooner. I think it’s going to be a great year and the ACC will find out Syracuse isn’t going to fold for anyone and thinking that we’re a joke is going to come to and end.

    Looking forwards to meeting and talking with you.

    I’d put NC State in there instead of BC or Maryland. They have a similar history and are trending up as opposed to down. Better fan base also. But it’s all about Duke and NC. Let’s be real. Including SU, we’re talking about three teams that are realistically top-5 nationally each year. Together, they could rival the glory days of the 80’s Big East.

    Yo hoo!! Come on!! Some of the FB matchups will be interesting too. If not more!!

    @Terry;

    I’m not over looking the football side of this equation. I honestly think the upset of the year is going to be home in the dome against Clemson. Stop and think back when we were playing Boston College,no-one can deny that the games were good in both sports. We get shots at playing both Miami and Va. Tech again. Do you honestly think that Frank Beamer isn’t going crazy with the thought of playing us again with memories of that Donavan McNabb led win against them with no time left on the clock the last time they were here?

    Let’s face it guy’s joining the ACC has elevated all the sports programs here at Syracuse. I’m not going to single out just one or the other and say it’s better.

    FSU has to travel to Pittsburgh for their opening game against Pittsburgh on a Monday Night.

    On a Monday Night!!!!!Have you ever seen that done before Carlton? Isn’t it unusual for the college game to played on a Monday Night?

  10. Ron Avatar

    I need some help here fella’s. Do we have to pay a monthly fee for joining the Syracusefan.com web site?

    The forum section seems pretty clean to me and was wondering if a person had to pay or not.

  11. Terry Avatar
    Terry

    Ron-I wouldn’t pay for it any way. Just tired of the BB end to this move to the ACC. Its about FB totally. Yes with the Dome there is $$$$ possibilies for BB, but College FB is the money maker way over BB. Tonite is an example. The NFL draft is about College FB not any OTHER college sport. College BB draft is invisable!! Going to the ACC and leaving the BE(no matter what JB thinks) is best for SU. Get over it. Other than only 4 teams in this years College FB playoffs will be quite exciting. Every game counts. Even who you play counts to. Not compared to College BB! At first BC, Pitt and VT should be SUFB major rivals in different ways. Can’t wait!!

    PS I’m watching the draft and Buffalo is sniffing around Ryan. For his sake please pass on him Buffalo. Good luck Ryan!!

  12. Ron Avatar

    @Terry;

    Well your wish did come true,Marrone passed on taking Nassib in the draft. All of his talk when he first came here making statements like “Syracuse is and always was his dream job”,was nothing but hyperbole being spoken to a fan base that needed someone to lead and turn a program around.

    Well Terry,his word means nothing to me now and I’ve lost a lot of respect for a man who I thought was a honest and truthful person.

    No-one has to come in here and bulls**t us,all were asking is someone to be honest and to the point on what direction they want to take the team. I like to think that Coach Shafer is that person. His straight talking,to the point and believing in what he is saying is refreshing.
    I hope he stay’s here awhile and builds Syracuse into a national power. I’ve noticed that his approach to recruiting is way different than Marrones,and for me that is a good thing.

    I think NC State will turn into a pretty good rival. We’ve had some recent basketball history with them and I’ve noticed we seem to vying for a lot of the same recruits in football.
