West Genesee High School Head Football Coach Joe Corley hasn’t ever had a player like Naesean Howard walk through his program. Not once during his nine years with the program.
“Never. I’ve never had any player attract the attention that he’s gotten. He’s something special.”
Is Howard poised to be the best local product to come out of Syracuse and don the Orange in college? As a junior last season, “Naes” piled up over 1,500 yards on the ground and amassed 26 touchdowns. The future Orange tailback is already setting lofty goals for his senior season at West Genny.
He told The Fizz he wants to eclipse 1,800 yards and 30 touchdowns. Corley admitted that it certainly could happen this fall.
“The sky’s the limit with Naes. I say this all the time about him, he’s not just a running back or a defensive back or a linebacker. He’s a football player. Naes is a football player, so athletic and he can do all the little things.”
Howard possesses quickness and speed that many can only dream about. He has the potential to be one of the best local products to go to Syracuse over the last decade. He could also team up with recent commit QB A.J. Long and form a tremendous 1-2 punch in the Class of ’14. Will he have a better career than some of these former locals turned Orange studs?
- RB Damien Rhodes, 2002-2005
Rhodes was one of the most highly touted players to stay home and play at Syracuse. Expectations were high for the Fayetteville-Manlius native, and he was one of the lone bright spots during the tail end of the Pasqualoni era. Rhodes left the Hill fifth on the all-time all-purpose yards list with close to 4,000 over his four years. His final two seasons he rushed for nearly 1,800 yards and racked up 17 TD’s. Rhodes has coached at F-M since 2008, and was just promoted to head coach in January.
- DB Will Allen, 1997-2000
The Corcoran cornerback had one of the best NFL careers for recent Orange alumni. Allen picked off 17 passes during his Cougar career Рincluding a school record 11 as a senior Рand went on to garner All-Big East honors as a senior at SU. He was drafted in the first round in 2001 by the Giants and played the majority of his career with New York and Miami. He was also one of SU’s best return men in school history.
- WR Marcus Sales 2008-2012
The CBA product‚Äôs career started slow, then¬†hit a snag in 2011¬†when he was suspended for the entire year by Doug Marrone after his arrest for drug possession. He proved to be a playmaker during his senior season and tallied nearly 900 yards and 8 touchdowns this past fall. He benefited from an up-tempo offense that featured SU‚Äôs most potent aerial attack in school history. He had one of the program’s most memorable bowl performances with 3 touchdowns in the inaugural Pinstripe Bowl.
Howard still knows he has some work to do to become one of the best ever. But for now, he admitted to The Fizz he’s happy to be continuing his football career at SU in 2014.
“Syracuse was always my dream school. I liked the family feeling of the coaching staff and I really think I can fit well into the football program. Also, it’s a good place to study business.”

I agree with the above post,the best ever to play here were Tim Green and Chris Gedney.
The best not to play here were Dorsey Levens and Jolan Dunbar. How did either of these players ever slip through the cracks.
But I do agree with your article on Nas Howard. He could be the next best player to come out of the Syracuse area.
Damien Rhodes has also told us that he has an OLB and TE/DE that can and will play D1 ball. You might want to do an article on Tyrone Wheatly and Zaire Ashley. it would be nice to get more information on these two players.
Oh! I forgot mention another good article Kevin.
Ron, you forgot Mike Hart. Yeah his pro career derailed after 3 seasons but he was one of the best, I think better, than Dunbar even. And one of the greatest steals Michigan ever made in Upstate New York.

Jax32 the reasons I didn’t include Mike Hart were,
a) He wanted to get away and was never going to come to Syracuse.
b) Keven asked us for the best players,I put Dorsey Levens there because Mike (in my opinion)didn’t measure up to Dorsey at the RB position.
You mentioned that he was probably better that Jolan Dunbar. You talking apples to oranges here,a running back compared to one of the finest line backers ever to play the game that came from Syracuse. I really don’t think so.

If Howard emerges as the kind of back described above I will be pleasantly surprised and admit Iwas wrong about him butat this time I don’t see the kid as being a high end recruit for the program. I wish him well as his success will be the team’s success as well.
Chris,I like to follow all of the local talent that is good enough to make D1. I followed Mike Hart’s career and will follow Naz Howards and Tyler Rouses careers as well. I loved watching Jolan Dunbar play football and asked myself the question as to how did this kid escape Syracuse University? We know there is alot of 5* athletes that get recruited that fail because they can’t handle the pressure and doesn’t play the game with heart.
I believe Naz will play the game with heart and I also think that Coach Shafer and the Syracuse Football program will develop him into an NFL running back before he graduates in 5 years.

marqise walker Henninger, UofMichigan, Tampa Bay? Tyvon Branch CNS, UConn, Oakland Raiders. I would put those two ahead of Jolonn Dunbar. I do think though that Dorsey Levens and Tim Green were the most successful local products.

Guys like Walker, Levens, etc played elsewhere. But these are great names.
If you guys were to rank them, how about the best best local players of ALL-TIME–Could have play college anywhere, not just SU…how would you rank them?
Well all time local product has to be Ernie Davis, but Syracuse area alone would have to be Tim Green.
I read somewhere that he will play safety at cuse. Of course that will change considering we need to go heavy at RB this class.

Rank the all time favorites! that would be an awful hard thing to accomplish Kevin. In my case I didn’t start following the local talent until Coach Mac recruited Tim Green and Chris Gedney out of Liverpool. I honestly wouldn’t know who came before them.
I believe out of the names mentioned in the above post,all are equal in my eyes, because all of them have played or are playing today in the NFL. Our local kids/ players have made it into the big time and I congratulate them all on a job well done.
