Jim Boeheim is cranky, and he directed it at Andy Katz. His squad was upset by an unranked rival. He’s missing an important big man in Dajuan Coleman. His team has been hit or miss heading into the stretch run of the regular season. And one of his best scorers has been held out of a half dozen games because of a term paper snafu.
After the 66-58 loss to UConn, which marks the last time these two bitter enemies will face one another as conference foes, The Per’fesser had choice words for Katz.
“I’ll answer anybody’s question but yours. Because you’re an idiot. And a really disloyal person. I have a few other things I can add, but I’m not gonna go there.” ¬†
And for historical record we now have what is known as the “Katz Face.” What did Boeheim mean by his rip job? Fox Sports’ Peter Shrager tweeted:
“I’m told by “in the know” sources that Katz irked Boeheim by sharing info JB believed was off the record on the air re: James Southerland.”
Early in the game, Katz reported from the sideline that James Southerland had been suspended because of two paragraphs he wrote in a paper. Apparently, Boeheim was rip sh*t that Katz would make these details public.

It’s funny because the popular theory around campus was that Southerland had someone write a term paper for him. Now we learn it was only two paragraphs. One would think Boeheim would snicker because it makes the case seem that much more ludicrous. A player loses 20% of his season because he cut and pasted two graphs from Wikipedia?
But instead Boeheim must be pissed Katz used confidential information (obtained from Boeheim, Southerland, or an SU source) on the air about it. I don’t buy the theory Boeheim is still steaming about Katz’s thoughts after the Bernie Fine situation. Katz and Boeheim must’ve had conversations since then. This boils over after the UConn game because it’s all about Katz’s sideline report.¬†
Should Boeheim be upset? If Katz went public with information he obtained with trust it would stay private, then yes. But The Per’fesser’s wording was silly. No reporter has a responsibility to be loyal. Especially one that covers the entire sport nationally. Boeheim doesn’t ever have the right to be bothered that a media member was “disloyal” to him or the program. And Katz is generally regarded as a very good, and very fair, reporter.
Boeheim has also made a cottage industry out of spiting the media, so this might just be par for the course. When the going gets tough around SU land, Boeheim usually attacks the scribes (the G-Mac tirade, trashing Waters/Ditota a few seasons ago).
Ultimately, Boeheim should be chuckling that Katz did his dirty work for him. A player being forced through the ringer for two sketchy paragraphs is a joke. But Boeheim going off on the media and making it personal? Just another day in paradise.

So plagiarism is okay? If he was caught plagiarizing than yes, he deserved a suspension. As long as the NCAA keeps up its facade of student athletes than he should be treated like any other student.
@Max – The Southerland issue had nothing to do with the NCAA.
Did you even watch the game and listen to the explanation? Or are you just offering another ridiculous opinion.
He proved to the board that he didn’t plagiarize and was able to play proving that he shouldn’t have been suspended.

The Southerland suspension WAS due to an NCAA investigation as reported by Mike Waters
in early January.
JBs act is getting tiresome. He is the face of SU and SU basketball in particular. he could have answered the question and then told Katz I need to speak to you later. Instead he insults a reporter and I think makes the program look bad. You see how the team played and the coach acted. Would you want to be associated with that 3 hours of Cuse bball?

The Southerland suspension had nothing to do with the NCAA investigation. It was self reported by SU. Waters original article was wrong. The NCAA was investigating Southerland’s prep school, not the paper that was recently in question.

Having been in a college algebra class with Boeheim and seeinh how the athletes got through that class Jimmy should be the last person to get involved in a discussion of cheating. Others in the class wereRex Trowbridge and Billy Hunter. It was pretty disgusting to see happening in fron of you

This is what I will say on the southerland thing. It’s been said it was a paragraph not an entire paper. It makes me think that he might have made a mistake. Do any of you know what MLA or APA is? I doubt it. Citing stuff can get complicated. Its easy to make mistakes. Now if it was an entire paper then well he probably did cheat.

Here’s the whole thing in a nutshell if Katz was told something that was supposed to be kept off the record and the aired out to National Tv audience JB had ever right to go off on Katz. Lastly I also was under the impressions that if something is still being looked into further that they could not disclose any information about what is going on or what happened. KInda like not being able to comment and recruits that have signed.
Syracuse will have 15 losses by the end of the season. They will have to forfeit 6 games because Derek Brower was ineligible and they played him anyway. JB needs to track the eligibility of his guys much better than he does now.
UConn is not a top team nationally!! SU got beat badly by them!! Wait until SU plays top talented teams. There is plenty of parity nation wide. JB is losing this team. I can’t blame JB for being pissed off about Katz. The media nationally and locally are only after tidbits that make their jobs easy and show influence. Sometimes JB gives them bait for that!! So you really think this team is really a Sweet 16 team after the UCONN game?? THEY CAN’T “REBOUND” even against smaller teams. Wait until they meet a superb rebounding team and they will!! This has everything to do with the fine situation. Last year preseason nit jim told katz preinterview not to go there on the fine topic. Katz went there, it pissed off Jim, and Jim hasn’t spoken to him since until last night.

Actually it’s not because of an NCAA investigation from January otherwise an SU academic review board would not have been able to re-instate him to play.
Not to say there isn’t an investigation going on as I understand there is but Southerland’s suspension was not a part of it as was clearly reported at last night’s game.
The investigation has to do with an SU employee who has since resigned that was director of basketball operation I believe, Stan Kissel.
Pay attention when grown ups are talking.
Boeheim starting to remind me of Paterno in his later years. Don’t think he’s up for much more of this and probably could us a break from it all, a permanent break!
