He’s not your classic burner, but Jalen Williams is a force to be reckoned with in the secondary. The junior at Newburgh Free Academy (Newburgh, NY) has had an offer from Syracuse for quite some time.
The 6’1” 180 lb. strong safety is a Class of 2014 prospect. Williams holds an SU offer, as well as bids from Buffalo and UMass. The schools showing interest include Penn State, UConn, Georgia Tech, NC State, Rutgers, Maryland, and Virginia. Williams is a New York state guy with some gifted talent according to his head coach Bill Bianco:
“He’s a very smart player. He understands team. He’s very long, and when the ball goes up he’s got some of the best hands I’ve seen.”
Jalen also brings some versatility to the table as well. Williams plays wide receiver at Newburgh and has suited up as the back-up quarterback. This past season, Williams recorded eight pass break-ups, 56 solo tackles, and nabbed five interceptions. Bianco mentioned Williams’ great awareness on the field. He’s a significant piece to Newburgh’s special teams’ unit.
In order to ensure a strong senior stint, Bianco said Williams is putting in the extra work to gain more recognition.
“He’s running track which he’s never done before. He’s doing it just to get faster for football. He’s doing side workouts with our trainer. Then I have him a couple of times after track to do some drills. The kid is doing everything he is asked. He’s a guy you can gravitate to.”
The fact the Orange is giving Williams a look is thanks large in part to wide receivers coach Rob Moore. He offered Jalen the opportunity to play at SU.
“As far as Rob goes, he’s a Long Island guy, when he walks into this school with his credentials, he can get the attention of any kid. And as professional of a guy he is, on top of that he’s a great guy.”
Now it‚Äôs clear the balance in power with in-state recruits has shifted Moore‚Äôs way. With Doug Marrone and John Anselmo out of the door to Buffalo, Moore‚Äôs role becomes all that more important in landing future New York recruits. Bianco is entering his fifth full season at the largest school in New York’s Section 9. He thinks Moore can easily re-build or re-load the SU-NY pipeline.
“When it comes to picking up where the other guys left of, it won’t be long before the pipeline is up and going again. You’ve got to remember those guys (Marrone and Anselmo) had built some of those relationships even before they went to Syracuse.”
Syracuse also has its eyes on 2014 Brooklyn star Thomas Holley, and Camillus running back Naesean Howard. Williams was a captain last season and should return as a lead man once again for Newburgh. He was First team all-defense in the region and made All State first defensive team last season. He’s running track for the first time just to improve his speed on the gridiron. That 40 time could get a lot better in the next year as Williams is recruited by SU. Maybe he starts a new era of in-state pipeline to the Hill.

I know Syracuse is looking at another WR in Steve Ishmael. I can’t find any information on him anywhere. Is he a sophomore or junior in high school and Syracuse is looking at recruits for 2015 and beyond?
Look dougie or Anselmo didn’t get any signatures from the # 1 players of NYS for years. Coach Moore will do fine. With his great rep it can’t hurt. With time and patience Coach Moore will change that. After all dougie and Anselmo didn’t get that job done. But I believe Coach Moore will.
Howard would be a wasted scholarship for Syracuse if he is offered and accepts.Everyone on the current roster is a better prospect at the running back position. Howard is not aDiv1 quality player and would only receive an offer t placate current coach as an investment for a possible future player that plays for that school.
As a West Genesee grad, Camillus resident and someone in the know, you might want to avoid Nasean Howard. Agree with Chris, lets focus on better statewide talent with a free schollie in hand.

I will admit Jax32 that I haven’t seen this kid play at all. You’ve seen him play and that makes you the expert and I accept your evaluation of him. But here is a list of schools that have offered,Syracuse, Boston College, Buffalo, Connecticut, Nebraska, Penn State, Utah.
Are the recruiters all wrong on this kid? Do you think that those schools are playing some sort of shell game on him? It just seems a little confusing to me.
What about RB Curtis Samuel? This is a NYC kid (Erasmus) and getting attention/offers from MD, Ohio State, UConn, Rutgers, BC and Nebraska? Hope we are on him, even if just for the show of it. You need to make the effort even if futile to build the relationships.
Hell SU doesn’t want local GatorAde NYS players of the year why would they want Howard???

The recruitment of Tyler Rouse is over and done with. Are we going to complain to us over the next 4 years about Syracuse not wanting him. For goodness sakes man move on.
Ron,u know me,I tell it like it is and Im letting you no were finally making offers to kids in NJ we never tried too b4 with Dougie and RU and the others cant get them all so Im real optimistic this year….just the general quality of the kids were going after is up a notch!!Well do better just by osmosis this year haha…I always said if Dougie was just a average recruiter we’d be where we belong already!!He was a damn good coach just didnt like recruiting!!But Chris is right it looks like HCSS is giving goodwill offers which might help down the line but a waste for now on 1 or 2 kids!!

I understand better now why you pound your chest and kind of brag a little when talking about Bergen Catholic High School. It’s not just the football but all sports that they win(490)championships in.
There isn’t one(ONE)high school in NYS that will ever compete at the level a school like Bergen Catholic does. What a difference it is when you cross the borders and go into a neighboring state. The mind set of the people who run those programs completely different from those in NYS. I wish schools like Bergen were in my neighborhood Russell,you should be very very proud of your old stomping ground. I know that I would be.

Malone,I was just telling Ron on the previous thread about Craig Iron Heyward from Passaic HS…in the 80s my HS Belleville beat undefeated and #1 in NJ Passaic 3-2 in a classic…Ironhead 5’11″240 4.6 40 ran 50 times into the line and it took 8 guys to bring him down for 2/3 yd gains and took a safety w/1min left to keep him FAR from the endzone lol..we finished 3rd in the state that yr and Joe Pa sent Dick Anderson to coach RU instead of him…Anderson told Heyward he was’nt RU matierial??could u believe that?His brother Nate was actually a better ATH than him but only 5’11” 195 but both played at Pitt and in the pro’s!!Heyward passed in his mid 40s a few years ago!!(Ironhead)RIP,he was a warrior!!
Everyone is asking,once Syracuse enters the ACC will they establish rivalries in the new league to make it more interesting for the fans? My answer to that is yes they will.
For me we’re still going to have a Northeastern flavor of football with Boston College and Pittsburgh every year. It would be real nice if Syracuse could set up a non-conference home and away game every year with Penn State and a neutral game to be played at MetLife Stadium.
Have you all forgotten what Miami and Virginia Tech did to us by leaving the Big East? I haven’t!!!!! Donavon MacNabb after fading to his right,stops and throws back across to the opposite side of the endzone for the winning score with no time left on the clock to beat a Micheal Vick led Virginia Tech. Could be a real nice boost and could become a rivalry and I think even with all of it’s troubles Miami too. If Maryland would have stayed in the ACC we would have had schools in place just like it was in the old days. For me that would have been fun. Boston College,Maryland,Syracuse,Pittsburgh and Penn State. Doesn’t get any better than that folks.
Ron,truth be told RU would be a fairer and more realistic rival now due to recent history and outside of a few oldtimers like us the younger fans dont remember some of our recent past let alone “rivalry” with PSU??..hell most dont understand the signifigance of #44 or understand “Cuse” history but do hate RU plus the fact their sanctions gives them a built in excuse if we do beat them!!…you seem to look at them wistfilly but I think PSUs pushing got RU the B1G spot tho they do fit the profile better than us and Joe Pa who always was a RU booster said if he ever took any other job it would be them! I agree Russell,we’ve played Rutgers in the past home and away for a long time and I shouldn’t have left Rutgers off of the list of those Northeastern Schools that I mentioned in a previous post.
I was impressed with the old Giant Stadium Russell. The new MetLife Stadium is gorgeous and a great place to watch a football game. The tickets are already on sale for the game and I will probably go next week to get mine.
Ron,what I like about us is we understand each others natures and can read between the lines haha!!With us its more than sports we have in common!!I also feel warmly about “Carlton the Real” and “Bigddip the Loyal”…all I like… not to forget our young Texas friend CuseDontLuse!!
Russell I’ve come to call you friend because of the words that you’ve written over the last year/year and a half. During that time Russell you’ve told us all your life story.
I have the utmost respect for anyone who has served his country in time of war. I think I understand the medical problems that your going through now,and also know that when it’s time we will go to a game together and have a great time. Maybe with a little luck Russell I bring my wife along so that we can share a great “CORNED BEEF/HAM AND CABBAGE MEAL WITH ALL OF THE TRIMMINGS WITH A LOAF OF ITALIAN BREAD THROWN IN TO BOOT.
When I was younger Russell and still to today I’ve always stood for the little guy and the people who where out numbered when it came to a fight. I call you friend,but we could almost be brothers. I can pitcher you and I being rushed by 10-15 guys who want to kick our ever loving backsides. When it’s all over and done with the only ones standing are the two of us.

From sources i know, RU and SU are discussing a series in the future but are waiting for everything conference related to play out. Also I have a question, I have seen the the movie about Ernie Davis and does your outdoor stadium still exist?

What is wrong with syracuse not recruiting the best player in the state Curtis Samuel??!!! or atleast hard enoguh then they are leading on to. He has offers from ohio state and notre dame and his teammate wayne morgan is at the cuse and about to shine big time. I read his coach said hes the best theyve ever had SMH!!!!! And he just finished second in the state in the 55meter in track.
@michael,I guess its because ur only allowed to offer so many and they feel offering him would be a waste of an offer?Im sure they’ve talked to him “who would’nt” and maybe he indicated he wants to leave the state (some do)for his education!?!JMO.

Every passing year diminishes Rob Moore’sinfluencein recruiting.These kids playing the game now barely know who Jim Brown was and his impact on the game. Look at the Bo Jacksons JimBrown greatest athlete poll.Bo’s name being more recent drew the most votes. Try throwing in another name that deserves recognition as this greatest athlete. HOw many know the Jim Thorpe story and how this poor Native American was robbed of hisOlympic medals by small-minded people with too much power following ridiculous rules like a television character named Barney Fife”. The point is that the further away in time you are from the children of to day the less impact you have in recruiting or getting their respect.
