Syracuse begins the process of moving into the post-Doug Marrone Era as the Buffalo News reports he has been hired as the next Bills head coach. It’s surprising Buffalo hired Marrone when it had a slew of higher profile names available such as¬†Lovie Smith, Ken Whisenhunt and Chip Kelly. The Bills also had Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton and¬†Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy to choose from.
Will Marrone make a good NFL coach? Hard to say. He stands for thoroughness, discipline and doing things the right way. His blunt honesty is a rare commodity in a sports arena filled with buzz words and public relation campaigns. He has the ability to connect with each person, and embodies the persistence needed to believe when things are dark.
There’s plenty of that which fits the mold of what the Bills are looking for. He also has experience at the NFL level, and successful coaches in the pros (Sean Payton, Bill Parcells) whom he can lean on for advice. Marrone’s internal fortitude and belief in himself also makes it risky to doubt any endeavor he puts his mind to.
But from a Syracuse perspective, Marrone at this point feels best suited to be a college coach, and a very good one. Syracuse’s recruiting surged, building every year, since he took over. Spend 15 minutes talking with him, or listening to him speak, and he drips trustworthiness. You’d feel comfortable sending your player to him as a high school coach. You’d also feel secure giving him your son as a parent. You’d feel comfortable allowing him to make (most) decisions within a program as an athletic director or a fan. He seems to have a plan, and executes it.
Maybe his passion and personal history with SU made him a special, unique fit on the Hill. Had he moved on to Tennessee or Arizona or Texas Tech it’s possible he wouldn’t have been nearly the success. He had a genuine connection and love affair with Syracuse, New York City, and the type of kids that came out of there. If he walks into a living room in Wichita or a high school in Houston, is he able to convey that same emotion?
What does Syracuse do now? Promote Scott Shafer. There’s little doubt Laray Smith suddenly delayed his decision because of Marrone’s impending departure. I still believe Ebenezer Ogundeko was heading to Clemson even had the head coaching spot remained consistent at SU. But Smith represents the next issue with SU football. How to keep its commits through National Signing Day in a little less than a month, and not lose ground in its recruiting areas from the last four years. Shafer would help do that.
For every defensive commit, like CB Darius Kelly, DT Isaiah Johnson, and DT Wayne Williams, a continuity with Shafer will allow them the confidence the scheme and feel won’t change. He helped lead a defense that progressively got better this season, and concocted a way to shut down Geno Smith three straight years. He was the assistant head coach at Stanford, and Jim Harbaugh raved about him. He’s young enough (46) to still capture Marrone’s youthful energy. Assistants Tyrone “The Closer” Wheatley, and John Anselmo must stay on staff as well. They’ve done most of the heavy lifting in recruiting during SU’s ascension. They’re much more likely to do so when promoting from within, instead of hiring an outside name.
Orange Nation also knows you need to understand the unique Syracuse dynamic to succeed. Groobers had zero chance of winning, not only because he’s a terrible coach in every regard (just ask Chiefs and Wolverines fans), but because he was an outsider without instincts to bridge the gap. It’s a private school with a fan base that has the expectations of a public one. The basketball program has the glistening Melo Center, a legendary coach and plenty of national love. The football program needs to update its facilities. It’s a region of the country that’s difficult to recruit football talent from. You need to stay creative (mining the fields of New York City) and building pipelines to new areas (like the southern states), while working your ass off to keep the few elite in-state players home. You also have to pump optimism into a fan base that is used to coming up short, and starting over too much.
Marrone leaving for the Bills hurts. The entire program was starting to hum, cruising into the ACC with recruiting momentum and on the field success. But there are examples of successors that took programs higher than the original coach ever did. Just look at the hottest college coaching name in the nation: Chip Kelly went to two Rose Bowls, a Fiesta Bowl and the BCS Title Game in four years at Oregon. Mike Bellotti was there for three times as long and never took his team to Pasadena.
This is SU’s deal with the devil, however. Marrone getting an NFL job means he succeeded on the Hill. Syracuse must act swiftly. Last year we thought Rutgers recruiting class would fall apart in the wake of Crazy Eyes Schiano leaving. But they hired Kyle Flood immediately and limited the collateral damage. RU was also on the cusp of a BCS game with their first year coach. Now the pressure is on Daryl Gross to prove his worth as an AD.¬†The state of a program depends on it.

Yep
Name of the game is $$$$… How much is the university able or willing to invest in coaches and facilities. That more then anything will determine Syracuse’s future. If they are not willing to invest they can’t expect the fans to be willing to invest (financially or emotionally). Shafer would probably be fine…. But he can’t do it alone. The university needs to decide what it wants to be.
I agree w little joe, but regardless i will always be a fanatical orange fan. I first thought scahfer was great but i would like to see david walker as head coach.
Here’s thing I think all SU has do is promote Shaffer To head coach if you look at the recruiting class most of it is Defense , that would safe the class and keep Hackett as the OC. I believe that if they dont promote Shaffer to HC that it wont be long before he gets a HC offer or follows Marrone to the pros.
Another traitor leaves recruits jumpming ship !
It is comical how coaches just up and leave these days . Especially coaches who are alumni , and said theye were here for good , blah , blah , blah .
Greed …. all it boils down to now .
Oh well , off to Buffalo , and another sinking/stinking ship .
Good luck there . If you thought the fans were brutal here …. you ain’t seen nothing yet Doug !
To all of the players at SU this year …. Thanks for a great season . You guys played your as*es off , especially the latter half of the season . And Ryan , you may be landing in …… Buffalo as well , and good luck , you can go to the next level , along with a few other guys .
Thank you all !!!
So, what do y’all think about our AD Gross? He could not hold Marrone in place. Wonder why? Not enough money? Marrone vs Gross relationship was sour? The “dream job” was not so much of a dream but a night mare under Nancy & Gross? Marrone was willing to interview with any NFL team (e.g., Cleveland, Bills, Eagles, etc). Looks like he just wanted OUT. Wonder why? Has Gross lined up another coach?
Can’t do anything about the past but lets start listing some future SU Coaches. I would like to see some names of some hot coaches that wold come to SU! Go’Cuse!
Start listing:
Marrone was what this program needed and was the perfect fit t turn this program around. My problem with this whole thing is that everything he preached and practiced over the past four years he did the opposite here. “My dream Job”etc. If he truly loves this school and the players how do you leave this team now as it heads to the ACC and is on the rise. Marrone I hate to tell you but you have let the fans, players, recruits and the whole community down on this one. I do think Schaffer is the best choice but dont you think he takes his staff to Buffalo.
By the way does anyone else have a problem with Marrone or Gross not making a statement.
I am literally nauseous over this whole dilemma. Marrone was and is the right guy for the job and the University, Board of Directors, AD, etc. . should have done everything in their power to retain him and his staff. The only logical think to do is to name Shafer head coach asap., at least to stop the bleeding. That being said, I do not think he is at all head coach material and will be half the coach that Marrone is in that role. From there the University/board, etc.. will need to begin a search for the ‘next’ guy, whomever that may be. Tim Green comes to mind, that’s if he would even consider the job.
Agree with most of posters. Sick to lose HCDM, who was such a good fit and it all the right way. Lack of public statement from Gross shocks me. Assuming HCDM wasn’t just blowing smoke with his “dream job” rant, something has happened to sour hm on the school. Why come to decimated college program as path to NFL? Seems way to risky for coach who had a solid resume anyway. There is much more to this than a raise.
Hey looks like your star running back Gus Edwards and DT Wayne Williams will visit RU on Jan. 25th. Last time a running back committed to SU and ended up a Knight was Ray Rice. We know how that ended up.
Assuming he would have gotten a raise/new contract from SU – lets say he would have been up in the 1.5-2 mill range. Does the NFL really pay that much more? The fact that Penn St’s coach and Kelly at ND have pledged to stay at their current positions make it all the more sour.
Schaefer’s not the answer at head coach. Budget needs to reflect that of other big time programs, and we need to make a run at somebody who can truly inspire recruits and the team, both in practice and on the field. You’re throwing a dart with your eyes closed if you think Schaefer can run this football program. He’s a great DC for SU, but that just doesn’t qualify for the goals we should have.
Not sure about what mademan just mentioned but Gus Edwards to RU seems like a very legit possibility. Jawan Jamison has declared for the draft opening up some PT at the rb position at Rutgers. I wonder what impact this all has on recruiting. I mean though I’d probably advise my child not to just commit to a school because of a coach, I’d be lying if I said the coach is probably one of the most overwhelming factors in deciding on a school. Players essentially pledge their loyalty and commit to the HC and/or coaches that recruited them. If that guy leaves, does the school and other factors have enough to keep a guy interested.
I won’t jump on the Hate Marrone bandwagon because a couple of months ago, most fans on messageboards wanted to run him out of town anyway. Its business. I just feel like college coaches need to exit the “right way” and let their AD, team captains and recruits know that they are out. You can respect that. It also gives the school a fighting chance to hold on to their guys and begin the search for a replacement to head off any losses.
First, stop with all the..How could Marrone dump us…he said this was his dream job…..Well, dreams do change. Thanks Doug for lifting your alma mater out of the toilet…..Thanks….job well done!!! That is what we should all be sayting to our former coach and root for his success in the Pros..
Now, on to Cuse business: A new coach from the outside…it will take him 3-4 years to get his program going….he may want to change everything…who knows. Our best bet is to promote Shaffer to head coach, retain Hackett as offensive coordinator, Shaffer already has a man on board, Daust, who could slide into the defensive coordinator position…Keep Anselmo…and Wheatley and Moore!! this is critical to retaining this class, and keeping the offensive system that is exciting and produced so much success…….We need to act quickly and decisively!!!!
Let us not forget, we can afford to pay Shaffer, an established big name?….where is the cash going to come from?
Agreed…I definitely want this offensive system to stay…but I want a dual threat trigger man at qb. Kinder, Hunt, Broyld and Allen are my first perferences with Broyld being the most intriguing. I’m not going all VY or Cam, but he could be the qb that Joe Fields wasn’t if things go well. I pray that he atleast gets a shot at qb. If he loses the position battle let him work at wr. Try to have him stay in the 225 lb range and let Rob Moore work the hell out of him.
Watching all these committs starting to look elsewhere is sicking and again the fact that Gross and Marrone have yet to make a statement ticks me off to no end. Marrone is and continues to be the right man for the job but how he has handled this process is very unprofessional. Doug I hope you realize you arethe setting this program back. Doug your letting the players, recruits, university and fans down thanks. Wonder if he told the Bills that is his dream job and he has been preparing his whole life for that job.
The thing that bothers me is that marrone lied to us about the “dream job.” He brought us out of near irrelevancy and helped us stand again. Then kicked our legs out from under us. And for that he makes my all time douche bag list. He was the right guy for the job and left after 4 years. Where does that leave us? Who can we hire that isn’t going to do the same thing? Makes me appreciate Coach B and Mike Hopkins more than anything.
How can you homers say 4+million for 4 years is not enough for your traitor dougie. Again he lost as many as he won!! Just watched ESPN and the SU’s traitor dougie’s move to Buffalo Jills. It said dougie looked at film of “ALL” the teams in need of HC position. ESPN said dougie told ESPN that the Jills had the best talent of all the teams looking for a HC. That’s why he’s in Jillville!! HUH!!! He’s been looking for awhile not just the last couple of days. Why do you give this guy a free ride. He’s a classless liar who refused to lets his feeling be heard. What ever they are!! Well he did it his way and now watch what happens to SU. I have always been a strong critic of this coach. With this new insight he needs to get out of town now!! He lies about his loyality toward SU. He’d rather watch NFL film, than stay on the hill. Gutless!! The media won’t say it , so little old me has to say it!! God Bless the CUSE!! Enough I need a beer and a recliner!!
Guy is classless. Jumps ship just to be fired three years later. How can you not give your coaches, players and kids you recruit a heads up with what you’re doing? I thought he was the right person for the job, but in the end he is the same as every coach out there. Guy has no integrity and hope he falls flat on his face. But than again he is the one laughing to the bank and not me. Peace out! And I say get tressel to come back to where it basically started.
Some of you guys are so naive.
Of course someone is going to go the NFL over some middling football program at a basketball school. If the guy wants to prove he is a good coach, you do it at the highest levels.
I doubt he lost his love for Syracuse but he is a coach and at least a good enough one to get looks from the NFL. His dreams probably changed since he found some success.

the only positive that could come out of this is if doug made a big donation to su for football. as for coach you should offer it to scott schafer and try to keep as much of the staff as possible.
[…] must promote Scott Shafer […]
This is the first time Ive posted since he broke his own rules on the Spruill incident and jamming us w/leftover jucos in recruiting…..it looked to me like he put up a “white flag”!!I swore Id wait till he was gone before Id watch him!Ive missed Ron,Carlton and my nephew bigdipper but was physically sick by Dougies actions!btw Terry looks wise now guys!
Shows us what he thought about next year by his actions and the real heroes are Nassib and the team!A great QB could make anyone look good!Dougie has Ryan Nassib to thank for his new job!!
I haven’t always been a DM fan but you can’t blame him. Syracuse plays football on the cheap! Simple comparison on Division 1teams answers the question. DM and his staff were under paid. The facilities are sub standard and the administration is not actively supportive. Louisville decided to change their profile 3 years ago and look at the results. They spend over $7m more on football than SU…way up in the last few years.
He has a family and has the right to reach for better.
That said.. Buffalo is doomed. He doesn’t have the credentials. Compare him to Reide, Love the guy from Oregon. Buffalo got the only guy that would go there!
By the way..I’m for Cristobal or Tressel!
Schafer is small time and more of the same. The recruits he will”maybe” protect are not world beaters.
Problem..Cuse won’t pay!
These guys both have reason to want this job so we might get them on the cheap?…
We’ll take Schafer..more small ball!
@Cuse17,ur right about the Bills job,he went from the frying pan into the fire!!Cristobals a great recruiter but his wife LOVES FLA….he accepted RUs job last year but wife overruled him so maybe he dont make same mistake twice?Trouble is he’ll leave at first southern oppurtunity! How about Frank Solich, good coach and recruiter with Ohio and Pennsy connections?
I think there are multiple reasons he’s leaving . And i’m just guessing here , but if you look at the changes coming to the hill this year …. it may be one of the reasons .
a)Nancy leaving SU this year .
b)Probably Daryl gone shortly after
c) Not happy about going to the ACC
So maybe we should get either the HC from Stony Brook or Rhode Island. Both of those coaches did a fine job of coaching against us , and other bigger schools .
At least they wouldn’t be the next GRob !
You guys know how my venom towards dougie has been over the years!! I smelled something a little while ago about him. I have mentioned this issue before and one more time for it. dougie looked at film of all the NFL teams looking for a HC=ESPN. ESPN said dougie said the Jillettes had the best over all talent and that’s why the JILLS got your man dougie. Under normal circumstances dougie should be fired yesterday for doing that. If a person did what dougie did and went on his company time to find another position at another company, security would be called and he’d be fired immediately!! But the good DR didn’t do that!! One more of my crazy statement and this one really hurts because it came true. “I don’t mind being wrong, but I hate it when I’m right!! I was right about this fraud of a coach. DR get him off the hill NOW!! Plus quit supporting this guy!!
Does he not sound like a Randy Edsall clone at this news conference ???
http://www.buffalonews.com/
Does anyone really think that Gross is capable of making a quick decision on his next football HC? He will treat this like the search for the holy grail. Does anyone think that an AD wouldn’t be alert to alternate possibilities for his head coaching positions at a moments notice?Things happen in life that could have required that kind ofurgency. Like losing your heasd coach in the middle of recruiting season.
Why all this hate for Doug? There is not a working man amoung you ..no matter how much you love your job….would turn down an opportunity to do that same job with a bigger more high profile company for twice the money! Doug is not a traitor…..We live in America…the King of Capitalism!!!
He left for a better job…he could not talk about it publicly until it became official. We need to all stop crying about doug leaving and thank him for a job well done….The task is now on the AD and Syracuse to pick the right Guy!!!!!
I don’t hear much crying. I dont hear much hating…I hear genuine concern over the current administrations ability to find a high profile replacement that can help us save our recruits…as little as they are…lots of three/four stars and transfers without a real QB replacement either on board or amounts the recruits…..as we enter the ACC.
Schafer is easy and stupid..right up Gross’s alley. Remember..he brought us GRob from USC….he was dragged to DM from internal pressure looking for an Eastern Football guy with Cuse ties.. Remember the letter in the DO from former players.
To bad this didn’t happen after we got rid of Nancy and then Gross!
It seems like the Orange care more about it’s basketball program than anything. It’s crazy how you guys have a heisman trophy winner and national title, but care so little for your football program. Look at hoops, Legendary coach, the new Melo center. You guys bring more people in the Carrier Dome for hoops than football. Things maybe going in a good direction because im hearing your AD is all over Notre Dame DC Bob Diaco. I hope you don’t get him because he is a coach on the rise and he can recruit NJ and NY elite athletes
Dr William come back to reality. dougie just plain lied about his feelings and SU. He needed HC experience to gain NFL employment and gave SU lackluster attempt for 4 years. He also made over 4+Million $$$ doing it over 4 years most mortal hard working “couples” would not earn that in a couple of life times. That sounds like the American dream to me. More that that sounds like greed to most!! After all of this he stuck his middle finger out and left like a child(or he should of been rolled off the hill-now). As a solid fan of SUFB this is the better job than Jillville any day!!
Mademan: I totally agree. Dr G let SUFB slide as long as SUBB is so respected nationally. I have always felt that SUBB could be of more help to make SUFB more respectable. And that’s directed at the fans just as strongly. I have had many discussions involving this issue with SUBB fans. Simply put they like the winning more than acknowledging that college FB is #1 and always will be. Again the lack of winning(thanks dougie) has led SU fans more in the direction of SUBB. I’m telling you win at the DOME and they will come!! Get dougie off the hill Dr. Gross!!
Just because you can recruit at Notre Dame doesn’t mean you can recruit at Syracuse!!! Big difference. How good will this defensive genius’s defense look when he doen’t have 4-5 star players running it?
We as Cuse fans have to realize the limits of the Syracuse program. Facilities cost $$$$$$$$! Where is the money going to come from? We are not State supported, we don’t sell out our stadium and have Rich boosters dropping Millions on the program..like many of the big football factories. We have to try to win with what we have and by being who we are. The move to the ACC was driven by the need for more $$$$$$$$$$!!!! Now that we are there, we will need $$$$$$ to upgrade our facilities so that we can try to compete. HCDM figured out a way to win with the players he could get to come to the Cuse. The next coach needs to be able to do the same. We are not being real Cuse nation. We are who we are!!!!
@Russell MacEachern; hello again. I tried getting in touch with you at the Pinstripe Bowl but just didn’t have any luck. I tried looking for your telephone number and didn’t have any luck there either. You haven’t posted for a while and I got concerned if everything was ok. I’m glad that your ok Russell.
I was waiting to see if at some point you’d start to post again,I happy that you have. Like I said earlier, this will be my last post. So Russell “King of the one Liners” and a friend, give em hell bud, give em hell. It’s been nice getting to know you. So long.
No more RONETTE=Damn!! DA whats going on with the old AXEMAN show(Mon-Fri @ 2-6pm). Saw somewhere its on CBS(??)!! But can’t find it here in the Southern tier. Help us!! Must be off TW now!!
Easy Mademan. Stop trolling. It took your school what, 150 years to care about your football program? You have been relevant for less than the last ten years and look at your own hoops. You are in one of the richest basketball states and areas in the world and you can’t make the NCAA tourney. Your coach jumped to the NFL too. Your current program is built on the recent failings of ours. Ray Rice is still your best product, and he was going to our school until we fired our coach. Don’t talk trash about our commitment. Your’s is a big state school that still won’t spend money. I would bet that over the last ten years, our hoops program has out drawn your football program too. I think you average about 44,000 since 2006. That’s not much better than our about 39,000 in the same time frame and we were going through one of the worst string of performances in program history, while you were going through one of the best. You’d better hope we don’t build on our return to the NY/NJ area.
Dr Bill…..you are banging your head against the wall. After reading numerous comments over the years at various messageboards and sites, I am thoroughly convinced that a decent portion of the fanbase is delusional about SU football. Its amazing when I read complaints that we can’t reel in 4 and 5 star recruits on the regular. Or how somehow a coach shouldn’t leave SU to pursue and NFL gig.
Lets be honest, the SU job is attractive to a point. For a guy like Marrone who played for the team there was a certain appeal. It doesn’t mean that he didn’t also want to take a shot at coaching in the NFL(the pinnacle of his particular industry).
Without the fertile recruiting area in SU’s backyard, without the immense financial commitment, without tangible gameday fan support and without competitive football facilities most “game changer” coaching prospects would probably pass over SU. Therefore, we need coaches that have the same approach as a Doug Marrone. You need a coach that is willing to try to mine raw talent into productive college players.
I’m amazed Doug Marrone just can’t win. I mean a few months ago, folks wanted to run his butt outta town. I mean he sucked as a recruiter because he couldn’t land Jones, Williams, Kelly and now Ebo. He couldn’t coach because the team was 2-4. Now folks are ticked off that he left.
Hey Malone……Really you want to talk about relevance. Then don’t mention Orange football. Your coach left to become the Bills coach. There goes to show how much he wanted to be there in the first place. Schiano built this program from years of neglect. Which means Rutgers weren’t trying to be a big time football school. SU was good 50 years ago. RU Football is better than SU football sorry. When was the last time you have had a top 25 recruiting class. RU just doesn’t care for basketball because it puts everything into the FB program. But don’t worry, 43 million a year annually in the B1G will help with facility upgrades. Maybe we can build our own Carrier Dome with that money and showcase it on the B1G Network lol. Troll these
@Ron,I had a little med problem and spent bowl day in NJ hospital BUT HCDM and some supporters lack of respect for SPD and the fact he allowed Spruill to play soured me as an RET.Det in a large NE city!!Are you still fighting with Fizz Staff?LOL..we have to meet soon and exchange %s and private Email addresses,Ive missed you Carlton and bigdipper paizon…Malone too,btw mademan is an ol RU diehard!Stops by occaisionally to bust chops HaHa!I get a lift out of his posts!!Terry still making a lot of good points Ron!!Like him or not!!He loves SUFB!!!
Ron,did u read my old post too u in Oct about our recruits at the RU game sat and partied with the RU recruits while they were our guests?I see its become public knowledge or I wouldnt bring it up!HCDM knew they were celebrating RUs win in their locker room but held it in….tough job!!I think his skin was too thin for the job!
Well I see alot of hate on this topic. Most of you pissed about DM bolting would have or have been calling for his head as soon as things got tough next season. It is what it is. I’m not mad at the guy. Some of you are talking bad about the Bills. I get that but Chip kelly was never coming out and DM was the hotest college coach on the market. I’m so tired of other teams left overs as the bills HC that I like the hire. Some of you say thats all the bills could get. Well they interviewed chip and lovie ect and didn’t offer them the job. They however offer DM. So w/e your all full of shit and pretty much know nothing.
Hey Russ, the kids had twitter pics with Khassem Greene in the locker room when RU beat Syracuse. DM had to feel he was fighting a fight that was out of reach. That B1G news had to be the writting on the wall. RU vs PSU, Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska, and Wisconsin are going to get NYC’s attention more than SU vs ACC teams. Besides FSU and Clemson, who cares about them.
@Russell MacEachern; I will be going back to work this weekend. sat.at the dome for a basketball game and back to my normal part time job on Sunday. I hope that you got all of your medical problems straightened out.
If you’d like I think a meeting could be arraigned between Wednesday-Friday of this week. All you need to do is let me know where and when. I would like to stay in touch and talk some more with you on different subjects away from this web page. How’s that sound old friend? I’m glad that Terrie has made some friends here. I think he needs all of them that he can get. Let me know about the meeting ok.
Ron,definetly must arrange meeting but since I live alone in the Albany area Ive been recovering in NJ at my Moms and sisters house till next weekend but let me know ur off days and well make some arrangement! Why are u not staying on the board? Marrones departure?Who made friends with Terry?A lot of what he says makes sense to me and he’s upfront unless u mean mademan’s comment which looks like went over Terrys head!I see my old friend Carlton still w/us,another upfront guy!I like that about him!Im glad hes happy w/the new coach but Im skeptical!!!All in all Carltons had a great grid season and I know the azz kickin the Cards gave the pride of the SEC made his year!@Carlton,enjoy ur xmas visit home?Ive missed u guys but some of HCDMs moves drove me nutz!!We could’ve won the Pinstripe w/o Spruill and after the Juco’s that was the last straw! Some of them cant believe they got a BCS offer!
