It’s Rutgers week. Time for a quick history lesson.
No one likes Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights used to be really bad. But it didn’t really make any sense because they had bonkers talent all around them. They were only a hop-skip from Manhattan. Then Crazy Eyes Schiano came along and basically did the bare minimum to make RU good. He kept a few local kids at home. He competed in a watered-down Big East after the ’04 defections. He won a few games, and players who felt like playing for their neighborhood team did. And in his long and storied career at RU, Schiano finished in the top 25 once. Yep, once. And they had like one big game on an ESPN Thursday night when people paid attention, and the Empire State Building was lit red. But suddenly he acted like he invented football, was the second coming of Nick Saban, and the attitude of Rutgers fans grew to be insufferable. Maybe you RU peeps don’t remember, but you sucked royally for like a century and that only ended like ten years ago. And the peak of all that Schiano success was somewhere between a Texas Bowl and a Beef O’ Brady’s one. So, let’s get off the high horse.
That’s Rutgers history.
So now it’s Rutgers week, and RU’s athletic department is trying to get #chopcuse to catch on – which is pretty damn lame. And the Knights have an undefeated team that’s wearing silvery helmets that make them look like Shredder wants to play some Pee Wee football.
Guess what happened when Rutgers started begging to get into the Big 10? Sorry, no vacancy. When the ACC was looking to expand? Yeah – we’ll take Miami, and Virginia Tech and BC – and then Syracuse and Pitt – and yeah, Notre Dame. Hell, the Big 12 took West Virginia. “Sir, Rutgers is on line 4.” “Uh, tell them I’m busy.” Conferences have been staying away from the Knights like they had farmer B.O.
And it’s pretty great that players from around the conference all realize how shady and arrogant RU is. Here’s actual quotes from the UConn Husksies (maybe the only time I’ll ever applaud them) before their game last week.
Dwayne Gratz, corner (Piscataway):¬†“I don’t like Rutgers.¬†I never have. I never will.¬†The funny thing is, Rutgers didn’t offer me until UConn did. I kind of built a little hatred for them.”
Ryan Wirth, defensive tackle (Medford, NJ):¬†“I committed to UConn after prep school. And you know what? Rutgers was in the door the next weekend. Since high school, it’s always been that kind of deal for everybody on my team. I think everybody wants to let them know, ‘I bet you wish you did [chase them hard with an offer].’ But everybody here is happy to be where they are. I know I would never trade it for the world. It’s just letting it be known – you know.”
Nick Williams, senior captain (East Windor, NJ) on RU’s all-black uniforms. “I don’t know how you have a black-out at noon. But, hey, it’s Jersey.”

@D.A;D.A. I surprised that you threw a dig at the farmers by using a statement like “Conferences have been staying away from the Knights like they had farmer B.O”.
A farmers hard work and sweat is what causes an odor at the end of the day. I would never put a hard working individual down D.A. never.
And Rutgers is no way in hell working as hard as the farmers do in any given day.
Just sticking up for all of the farmers in NJ. I hope we kick their butts all over the field and by the way your post wasn’t bad either.
I hope you guys realize how hard it was for me to do this but between espn and the talking heads and now my favorite blog?I love SU and most of our fans,..the Fizzfam in particular but I cant listen to anyone demean my home state!!Ashame u have to trash a state thats contributed so much to SU!!Im glad Mosk was’nt a part of this I especially enjoy his work!!

As I consider u the common fan I can live with but from the Fizz staff it was over the top!!I don’t mind and even expect it from the regular fan but not from the guys who are supposed to set the tone!!
@Russell MacEachern;it’s nice to see that your still up. I didn’t think the article was about Rutgers University Russell, I thought it was more about Schiano as the coach. Let’s face it Russell the man didn’t do anything for the University except run into the ground. They gave him a new addition to the stadium and a $850,000 low interest loan to build himself a mansion to live in. And when all was said an done he told the University to go to hell and walked away from it. And by the way he never had never had a winning record at Rutgers. I know you were going to get up set Russell,but how do you think he got the wins? We all know it was against sub-par teams that he built his reputation on.

Ron,what do u know about farming?I come from a long line of Scottish and Scots-Irish farmers on Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton Island,Canada along with lobster fisherman!!I spent many yrs baling hay and picking spuds by hand!!Shuckin corn and nuting pigs!!Even handmilked cows in the 50s and 60s!!

@Russell MacEachern; I want to make one other thing perfectly clear to you and everyone else ok, I will never knock another University and I mean never ever. A couple years ago when we had to travel and play Akron,that school and stadium was absolutely beautiful and my sons and I enjoyed the trip.
But the ordinary fan that didn’t go complained for a month afterwards that they didn’t think it was right that we traveled to play them.
Ron,I don’t give a sh*t about Shady…never liked him but that Uconn nonsense I heard all last week…sour grapes from plan B recruits and so did the bulletin board at RU…they got beat worse than the score”UConn” !!NoBODy in NJ likes him!!But he was a hell of a recruiter..u just get home from work?

@Russell MacEachern,I started working on a farm when I was 10 years old. I’ve had days putting in 3-4000 bails of hay up in the hay mount. I married a farmers daughter and we live on the land that she grew up on. Milked cows by hand,delivered the milk in milk cans to the creamery, picked corn by hand walking along a wagon in the corn field so my fater-in-law could take it and get it ground into grain for the cows to eat,spent a lot of full days plowing the fields and fitting them for planting. Getting up early(4:00 am) to start chores is not always the easiest thing to do.
Today Russell I have a 2 acre lot that I use for a vegetable garden. I run a stand during the summer months once the garden starts to produce. I own 2 tractors, a set of 2 bottom plows, 6 foot disks,I bought and refurbished a 2 row corn planter,and recently purchased a manure spreader. The garden keeps me real busy during the summer.
Russell we’ve never met,but I see we have a lot in common. If we ever get a chance to meet face to face Russell,I’d like to call you friend and say that it seems like we’ve known each other for eternity.
Seems like nothing ever seems to come to much good there on Choctaw Ridge and then Billy Joe Mac Allister jumped off the Tallahatchee Bridge!!!..

Yeah Ron,You seem to have have had a similar upbringing as me as I used to ove getting out of the city and work with my Uncle Darby on the farm!!I wascloser to him as a kid than my own dad who loved me but did’nt know how to express it!!Id like to get to the Dome b4 thanksgiving and get to 1 home game where we’ll get a chance to meet!!

I don’t see how anything written in this article denigrates the state of NJ at all and why Russ is flying off the handle.
This article is about the arrogance of SUNJ and it’s fans based on an overall historically terrible football program. As well as DA’s hatred for the SUNJ and it’s football program.
Where in the article does he state NJ is bad in any way ?? Please tell.
The only thing that I can think of is the Blackout comment “…But hey, it’s Jersey”. That is coming from a UCan’t player, not DA.

The is at it again. Look you trolls always go backwards into SU history about teams and coaches all the time. WHY?? Because that’s all you have “NOW” to look forward to. Rutgirls, Cinnsy and Louisville are BE programs that have improved over the last 5/10 years!!! And SU is not even close to improvement of any case!!! DA and myself hate RUTGIRLS no problem there. The problem is don’t make it sound like sour grapes as DA does. Rutgirls has blasted past our beloved SU in FB no doubt-get over it. Yet we move on out of the low classed BE conference. Rutgirls stays. GREAT!!!! Yeah we’ll get beat by them Saturday, but we are hopefully moving on to better pastures of NCAA FB. We should still play Rutgirls regularly if possible. Mainly for a rival and recruiting too!! So DA and you other babblers, Rutgirls is getting the better of SU now. But hopefully not in the future(unless we keep loser HCDM/dougie)!!!

This may just be the best article I’ve ever read on here. So true about how awful Rutgers & their fan base have become. I certainly do miss the days where every single year we could look at Rutgirls/Buttgers on the schedule and assume an automatic 49-0 win… picking up a win this weekend would be great though! It’s a throwaway line – a joke – farmer’s work in the fields all day and sometimes when they get back from a day in the sun and dirt, they have some BO! Dont get all hot and bothered about hating on NJ… it’s Rutgers week – one of the few weeks we can really get the rivalry in football going. Enjoy it – it’s sports – its not personal. Yeah reading this I definitely did not get the sense DA was after farmers, I understood it to be a figure of speech. More importantly, SU needs to get a statement win this weekend and a big part of that will be Dyshawn Davis. Look for him to shake things up early. If the pass rushers can hit Nova early, there’s no telling where his confidence will go. If it hits the tubes, don’t expect another 397 yard performance. SU offense also needs to not be afraid to sling it. Brandon Sharpe in practice today: “We aren’t trying to retaliate {to RU Athletics promoting the #chopcuse hashtag}, we just want to make our statement at the end of the game on the scoreboard.”
Can Sharpe have another Big East Defensive Player of the Week performance against a ranked team? This is a crucial game for SU to emerge as a contender in the conference.
