D.A.’s Knee Jerk Reaction: Syracuse Celebrates A Huge Win Over Pitt 14-13

The Orange opens up the Big East season with an absolutely crucial win.

The Orange needed this badly. Syracuse grinded out a necessary victory over Pitt 14-13. It wasn’t pretty, but you have to believe none of these games in the Big East will be works of art. The Orange obviously need six wins for a bowl, so if that’s the goal – now SU can go 4-3 the rest of the way. A loss tonight, and a presumable loss at Mizzou, would’ve meant going 5-1 in the Big East. That was HIGHLY unlikely.

  • Syracuse said it wanted to start fast and not settle for field goals, and that’s exactly what happened. A strong opening drive as SU went down the field for 70 yards in just three minutes. It scored a crucial TD as well, going up 7-0 and giving the Dome life.
  • Heads up play by Dyshawn Davis to pick up a live ball and take it back to the house. It’s game changing plays like that this defense has to stress. This unit¬†may not¬†a force every play (at least not this season). But it can use speed and athleticism to create turnovers and big plays. But the D definitely gets the game ball tonight. Holding the Panthers to a TD and two FGs, and creating its own score? That’s a statement night on national TV at the Dome for that group.
  • Unfortunately, the offense went ice cold the rest of the night. SU ended up winning a game it scored only 7 offensive points. Why? Credit the Pitt D for some of that, but just not enough big plays were created.
  • Give the Orange offense though credit for sealing the deal. When it absolutely HAD to have a first down, it got it in the waning seconds when Adonis Ameen Moore surged for 4 yards.
  • That final drive was Amos Alonzo Stag’s wet dream. The three-headed monster of Jerome Smith, PTG and Moore grinded out yards on every play of that final drive reminscent of the days when the forward pass was illegal.
  • How big an addition is Justin Pugh? On the final drive that iced the game, the offensive line won its battle in the trenches. The line deserves major props for the big first downs late.
  • SU cut down on its mistakes in a big way. Only three penalties and one turnover in the combined “self-inflicted wounds” category. That’s the only way you can possibly win a game when you score only one offensive TD. Tip of the cap to embattled¬†Doug Marrone. This was a critical week, he was under the heat lamp. His team responded with a Marrone-esque win, a ham-n-egger grind.

Hey DA,BE games ,work of art?when was our last work of art?Thats right,in the BE against WVU,its not like we do works of art anywhere yet!!Lets be happy with just a win!I know HCDM is and so are us fans!!

@Russell MacEachern; your right Russ,it wasn’t pretty but a win is a win. Syracuse moves to 2-3 and 1-0 in the Big East.
The game ball goes to the defensive unit for their efforts tonight.

Adonis Ameen Moore scored the only offensive touchdown for Syracuse tonight. Late in the game when Syracuse needed a first down to keep the clock running they gave it to him and he didn’t disappoint. he showed his strength when given the ball the second time and it took 6 Pittsburgh players to bring him down after he carried them 7 yards backwards.

I hope Shamarko Thomas is ok after he crushed into the tight end. I thought that he might have broken is neck or maybe his back after the collision. I was relieved when he got up and walked off of the field.

Russell I watched a good physical college football game tonight that came close to an old fashioned street fight.

Not that I’m complaining about the win… but where was Ashton Broyld all night???

  5. Ron Avatar

@Kevin; I was listening to the post game show on the radio on my way home after the game and they were saying that the reason we didn’t see Aston tonight was that they believe that he must have screwed up during practice by not practicing hard and Marrone got fed up with his behavior.

All’s not lost though, I know at some point he will return for action it’s just I don’t know when.

Told ya’ll just needed to let the season play out! Another good thing about this win is…1week of no terry! I’m sure he wont show his face after leading the charge all week to fire DM.

That was a fun game to be at… the defensive stands towards the end were exciting. I think the noise forced a couple of mistakes as well with the false start and dropped ball on Pitt’s last drive, and that sack couldn’t have come at a better time.

    Go ‘cuse!

@Derek,when you said u were going to the game the other day I felt it was good karma along with the “Smitty’s” blues and changed my prediction of a 1 pt loss to a 1 pt win 17-16 SU yesterday cause I knew it was gonnabe a BE dogfight,(aren;t they all?)!!Carlton won’t be making his weekly appearance today but remember guys….1 at a time!!Were not gonna win every week but its a good start….next week it will be tougher and we have to stay healthy for the long haul but it sure is good to win and relax on Saturday and watch everyone else beat on each other!!I still think 5-7 will be our season record which dont sound so bad now or 6-6 with good fortune!Lets hope RU beats UConn today so when we win next week it will send a message to the ACC!!Winning against a ranked team on the road is sweet!!@Carlton,who do u play “FSU” today?ND will kill the paper tigers of the “U”!!”Go Cuse”…u there Norma, bgogo and Stringer?I know CuseDontLuse will comment!!

You’d think we won the Super Bowl… It was Pitt…they stink!
While no one has seen “mistake free” football. We know what it is…limited turnovers, limited penalties , good speacial teams.
They were better. Offense was stopped in the second half. Receivers couldn’t get free and their defensive line had its way with our protection.
I’m very glad we won. It doesn’t change the situation. DM is right. it’s his fault we are a very weak team!
He will be gone after the first season in the ACC. He inherited a mess. He isn’t capable of fixing it. Sounds like the President! Probably give them both four more years to fail.

  14. Ron Avatar

Russell,Russell,Russell; no I don’t have to work today and yes I will be watching some football today. Your one-liners are killing me Russell.

@Cuse17 or should I say Terry? Pitts.offensive line was bigger than our defensive line, but that didn’t matter,Syracuse took control of the problem last night and won the game. While I was watching Brandon Reddish corner blitz and laying the quarterback out flat on his back kind of gave me an insight into what the future will bring for this team. Syracuse is going to do alright going to the ACC.
Syracuse reduced it’s mistakes and caused a couple of turnovers, one of which gave us a touchdown. That was a good game not a “mistake free” one. I thought the biggest mistake was when Deon Goggins got called for roughing the passer while we had Pitt. backed up at their end of the field.
Anyway it’s over and done with and Syracuse came away with a hard fought victory. Also remember this is a web site used for discussing Syracuse Athletics. I would appreciate it if we let kept all politics off of it.

defense won the game for us last night no doubt. we have to score more points on a consistant basis though. 1st half offense looked good coming out of the gate strong but put on the brakes in the 2nd half, which was very frustrating. i feel our offense needs to get ameen-moore into the game more if were going to use him this year. i do like the no huddle and nassib did throw ok. the line was ok. i felt tyson gulley and smith had some nice runs.i feel we must get into the endzone alot more if were going to have a successful year. defensively i feel we have played well all year long and again won this pitt game for us last night. thank you defense. a wins a win and i’m pumped for syracuse but feel offense needs to play 4 good quarters of football.

@Uncle Russ….finally saw some fire & steam out of HCDM. It was a classic 12th man Carrier Dome atmosphere….Wat i saw:

    1. AAM has arrived, 3 headed monster needs more carries
    2. Sharpe can triple or quadruple his production of the previous two seasons, this season…provided that effort is continuous.
    3. Sales can try harder, jump ball was amazing, now do it every play
    4. CBs will get tested against RU
    5. Ashton could’ve taken some snaps? Nassib was indecisive at times. ZA will eat this offense up as a dual-style QB….
    6. 3-3 & a 2-0 BE record would shake things up! Wasnt foreseeable 24 hours ago?
    7. Losing streak ended on national teletube, recruits & fb nation watching, that was cool, I hate Pitt
    8. HCDM was fiery…finally pissed off, taking charge, cursing yelling….I F’n loved it!
    9. D was lights out….20 rush yards? Both backs have had 200 yd rushing games, shell has been a frosh phenom…this was an amazing feat
    10. Great team win!

@Russell; enjoy the game against Rutgers on Saturday. If the Syracuse Defense Unit shows up to play the way they did against Pittsburgh on Friday night, they will win the game and go 3-3 overall and 2-0 in the Big East.

    Amazing and priceless isn’t it?

    Go Cuse;

I have been calling for Adonis Ameen Moore to play more all season!!! I did not see anything in the Pitt game that would make me back down from that stance. He was our top rated running back recruit in the Marone Era……Looked like he ran with power and purpose……Got to give this kid a few caries per game especially since we do not have a franchise running back…

Great win. Great atmosphere. Loved how the defense played. Section 129 was rocking. Was curious of the Broyld situation as well but as long as he is not injured or suspended he ll be fine. Love reddish but again morgan needs to play on the opposite side. Anderson and lyn just not getting it done. Great win. Sharpe played great. Loved seeing moore play he is a pounder. Alright I m still bitter about last years rutgers lose. I want this game bad.

Love all you guys weighing in after the game last night. That’s what it’s all about! Yeah, no style points for the Cuse, but thats ok by me. They just NEEDED that win. Def. scary moment for Shamarko. I have no idea where Broyld was. I don’t understand how they’re using him. Wasnt that the perfect night to try and get the offense going? Im jealous of some you guys that were at the game – love beating Pitt at the Dome! Good memories.

@Russ we got NC.State at 8 on espn. Should be an easy win. I know what u ment haha. All good :p.

@Cuse17 I dont think anyone here thinks it was the SB. Everyone that posted last night and today though aren’t the ones calling for DM’s like others did all week and are happy to see the team come through /w a big W. I don’t think this is a weak team at all. Are they a top 15 team? no, but u look at the teams they lost to and you would see those 3 teams are a combined 14-1. I do agree though that in the 2nd half pitt’s dline had its way /w our oline but we still found a way to win!

Yeah ur post was still on my mind as I was typing and posted to quickly b4 reading it!

  28. Ron Avatar

First let me reply to Russell’s post by saying that I totally agree with him that neither UCONN or Rutgers will be easy and after watching some of the Temple/USF game I think they too will be tough to beat. Just remember Temple is a very young team loaded with freshmen.
But I do think both Rutgers and UCONN can and will be winnable. Russell I think it’s going to be tough but stay positive bro AND GOOD THINGS WILL HAPPEN.

Onto a different subject. To all of the(TERRIES and other CRY BABIES)people who 4 years ago and up to last week wanted Skip Holtz to come to Syracuse to be the coach, please let me ask you. Has he done any better at USF than Doug Marrone has done here? Has he taken any outright BE Championship during his tenure? He’s on a 4 game losing streak, what would you be saying today if he was our coach? We need to set back and keep our mouths shut and let the season play itself out. In the end we all might be a little surprised at the results.

I think the loss to the undefeated NW is looking good for Syracuse right now. Should help Syracuse at season’s end to help determine what bowl they should attend.

In closing I wish both Tino Sunseri and Shamarko Thomas the very best and recover from their hits they both received during the game.

Hey Russell, I know this is a little long, but I needed to(vent)ask people some questions.

  29. Ron Avatar

Hey Terrie are you reading any of these posts? If yes,I think Prince Tyson Gulley is having a tremendous season so far and I haven’t seen him fumble the ball during these 1st 5 games like you told us all that he would. Would you agree with me in saying that I think that PTG is ONE HELL-OF- AN-ATHLETE?

    Go Cuse;

  30. Russell MacEachern Avatar
    Russell MacEachern

@Ron,Im convinced when all is said and done PTG will be one of our all time great RBs as hes just catching on!!RB will be a strength when AE arrives for yrs to come!!If AAM can get his act together (get in shape) and the OL starts to gell it will help our Def stay rested!…with the ACC being so weak lately I think they’ll be in for a surprise when we arrive and next yr will shock the college FB landscape!!Md if RE can stay out of Locksleys way will be the other surprise but hopefully Edsall will revert to his old selfish nature and mess it up for MD!!RE should practice what he preaches but his ego wont let him!!The future is bright friends…!! “Go Cuse”
