SU fans were nervous the entire day, and this game was a battle all afternoon. It shouldn’t have been. Stony Brook was a lesser opponent, but again the Orange found a way to keep an opponent in the game because of mistakes. But for the first time since the West Virginia game of last October, Syracuse gets a victory.
- Shameful tackling by Jermi Wilkes on Miguel Maysonet’s ridiculous 71-yard TD run. Wilkes drifted left toward Maysonet, but when the running back hurdled a tackler, Wilkes simply threw a shoulder into him (barely). Wrapping up and putting a hit on the ball carrier there is mandatory. It helped create the highlight run. Maysonet finished with 158 yards. Not okay.
- Dreadful blocking and owning of the trenches by the Orange on two goal line failures in the second half. Especially on Jerome Smith’s loss of a yard on 4th-and-goal from the 1. This is a worn down FCS team on the road in the 4th quarter. There’s simply no way you cannot own the line of scrimmage there.
- Doug Marrone’s guts to go for it in the second half to extend the lead is admirable. You’d hate for SU to coach/play scared or “not to lose” against an FCS team. But up 21-17, is 4th-and-goal the time to be going for it from the 3? And if so, should you take a shot with a passing play in such a condensed area?
- Prince Tyson-Gulley’s fumble under 2:00 at the end of the 1st H was unacceptable. Against better teams that’s the type of mistake that kills you. SU was around midfield, looking to put an exclamation point to end the half and PTG coughs it up. Can’t happen. Of course, he also scored the first TD of the day on the 61-yard reception in the first. So it wasn’t all bad for Prince.
- Nice drive by the Orange to come out of the locker room and take the lead. SU should’ve had that killer instinct all day. But at the very least, SU found that aggressive nature on the first drive of the 3rd quarter.
- Three offensive stars for the Orange: Ryan Nassib, Smith and Marcus Sales. Nassib once again went over 300 yards, didn’t throw a pick. Smith ran hard all day long (when he wasn’t running into his own blocker on the 4th-and-goal), and finished with 95. Sales caught the final score of the day, and had 5-117.
- Finally saw the Orange play calling target Ashton Broyld. He touched the ball a dozen times on offense, and scored on a beautiful 22-yard run up the middle. He showed his tackle-breaking ability and break away speed. Get the ball in his hands more. please.
- Coach Mac’s performance in the guest booth for SNY was the highlight of the day. He was fun, energetic, salty and homer-ific. Just Mac being Mac.
Final Word: It’s good to just see a win, been too long. But it should’ve never been that close. It could’ve been worse if Stony Brook didn’t overthrow a wide open receiver at the goal line in the first half. If this was an emotional let down after the USC game, it’s understandable. But the Orange is not good enough to play sloppy and still win against anyone else on the schedule.

Sorry anyone thinks that Coach Mac is the highlight of anything.He is creeping into dementia. He just won’t go away. He just won’t shut up and they encourage him to keep on blabbing and make a fool of himself. Its really sad.
PTG’s fumble was caused by a great helmet to the ball. It happens get over it! SU was practicing during this game, trying things. It led to some big plays by SBU but after half SBU was never a threat. SU never even ran one bunch WR set like they have been the firt two games. They used a FB they used Broyld! It was all way different than the first two games. If you think Marrone is gonna let his team blow out an FCS team I think we have learned that isn’t how he coaches. Bad for fan base but respectable towards other coaches. I would rather a semi blow out to be honest.
Yes it wasn’t the best game but as Stringer pointed out, Syracuse was trying new things today. I would’ve loved for them to just play their game, get up by like 4 TD’s and then try some different things but I agree I just don’t think that is how Doug Marrone coaches. We aren’t THAT good of a team yet that we should go crazy against a team that, lets be honest, no matter how bad we could’ve played there is no way we would’ve lost this game not in a million years. Just take the win guys and lets keep on with the season!
@Stringer;Syracuse missed 2 field goals and failed to score twice from the 3 yard line. Score should have been 48-17 Syracuse. But your comment about blowing the other team out is right on the money. THAT’S SOMETHING THAT SYRACUSE HAS NEVER DONE INTENTIONALLY,NEVER.
Two things that I’ve noticed was Stoney Brook was a big physical good football squad. Their game plan was to run the foot ball and slow the game down keeping Syracuse’s Offensive unit off of the field. The second thing that I noticed is I believe that Syracuse plays to the level of the other team. Syracuse didn’t look like the team that took the field against USC last week.

Not a bad over-all night and Syracuse records it’s 1st victory of the year.

i think su could have played alot better but we’ll take the win. i think we were inconsistant on the offensive side of the ball, but played better in the secound half. su must score alot earlier in these games.
Stony Brook is actually a really decent team, so I’m happy with the win. I disagree with the play calling of going for it down on the goal line in the 2nd half when you can make it a 7 point game with a field goal. Instead, we went for it, missed, and came away with no points. We’re lucky that Stony Brook’s offense didn’t have an answer.
Other than that, it was not as bad as it could’ve been and it felt like we were testing out some different looks and seeing what our running game can do going forward. I still think we’re a passing offense.
I honestly think Stony Brook would be better than .500 if they played in the Big East, so it’s a good win. I expect Minnesota to be an easier contest.
Derek,no way Derek,no depth!!they don’t have enough horse’s to last the whole game with even Temple but they’re good in their own level!!But their D1 transfers make them appear decent!UConn,Pitt,UL,RU,almost anyone would bury them but in any one game anyone could get lucky!!Im not sure they could compete at lower Sunbelt level!!

I am thanking god that this morning I woke up and the boards aren’t full of the sky is falling the sky is falling bs! Great post Ron on the “potential score” as well as the actual stats. SU was dominant by the stats without looking dominant in the game. Not sure how to feel about that! Hahaha! It was almost like once they did something or used someone and it worked they checked that off the list and moved on to trying something/someone else. I think they were trying to see what running plays would work if the stuff they were succesful at in the first two games failed down the line against someone. And I agree that SBU is a heck of a team just not deep enough all over the field. I really hope that the coaches got a chance to talk with/ explain the game plan or strategy to Zach Allen after the game so he doesn’t think they are an FCS caliber team. Zach was at the game supposedly for his first SU visit. Although those two Nassib keeper runs that Nassib actually pulled off pretty well were probably a signal to Zach of what he can expect when he gets to SU. I will tell you that at times, a lot of time actually, the SBU fans were louder than the SU fans. That is pathetic and unexceptable. Fanbase as a whole really maybe one of the most detached, uninformed, ignorant, fan bases in the country. It is heartbreaking and disgusting.

Just to show you how finicky recruiting is let’s take a look at Marcus Coker. Here’s a kid that Coach Marrone went after a couple of years ago. He decides to go to Iowa where last year he rushed for 1400 yds in the Big 10 and for whatever reason transfers from Iowa and goes to Stony Brook and ends up playing a game against Syracuse in the dome. Don’t you think that that’s a little ironic and why didn’t he just come here to play in the first place?
Stony Brook has 15-19 Division 1 players on it’s roster. They’re a good team and should make the championship game at the D-AA level. Bigger schools schedule these games and look at them as a practice/warm up game before the start of their regular season and finding out that it’s not the case anymore. These schools are becoming very good.
I also looked at their roster this morning and Russell getting back to one of our earlier statements,they have 42 players from the State of New York and 8 players from NJ on it. I wish them well and good luck for the remainder of their season.
The NCAA rules committee has had John Raymons transcripts all summer and hasn’t made a decision yet as to wither he plays for Syracuse this year after transferring.
When do you think these fools will make a decision? Boy you talk about indecision.
@Derek; I believe the two times that Syracuse went for the touchdown when on the 1/2yard line was the correct call then and it should have happened more during the game. Why didn’t they go for a 1st down when they were on the 35 yard line with a 4th and 2 instead of punting the ball and giving to SB on the 20? Just doesn’t make any sense to me.
As good as SB was, they wouldn’t have a chance in the Big East Conference and never would be a .500 club. Not with that team anyways.

@stringer-maybe we should play all our games at MetLife! Just kidding, but the point is you can’t blame SU for wanting to tap into a bigger better fan base then the Syracuse metro area has to offer. SBU is on Long Island and they travel better than our home crowd? The school should definitely work on making games a better experience for students, get them to the game en mass and lubed up and recreate a home field advantage. I just don’t think the crowd from Liverpool or Manlius is gonna get that job done. Did anyone see that SU plans to spend a good chunk of its $1 billion endowment establishing a campus component in NYC? Gotta keep pace with Cornell, Stanford, and all the other great private universities that are expanding in areas where the job placement and big money boosters and alumni are. New York’s college team!

@Malone I completely agree they have to find a way to get the students there every game. Maybe adopting the same carding policy as say a Chucks or another local haunt on the hill would do it?! Wow… you guys have been busy! I’m actually going to stick with my statements. Their offensive line is actually a lot bigger than ours. They have two incredible running backs. Their QB looked decent. They’re just lacking decent receivers, and even they beat us on some good plays. I was seriously impressed with their defense as well.
I do think if we played our usual game it would’ve been a much bigger lead, but the coaches were experimenting.
As for punting, I tend to think that anytime you’re past the 50 and have a reasonable shot at a 1st down if you go for it, then you should go for it. If you’re down on the 2 and it’s 4th down and you need three points to make it a seven point game, then you kick the field goal. Most other times you should probably go for it though. It’s situational. I’m just saying that you want to take the points and make sure that the other team can’t take the lead on their next possession. If we kicked the field goals on both those occasions, we would’ve been up 10 points. I’m just saying we got lucky that their offense wasn’t answering, otherwise we would’ve been screwed.
@Derek, with the ball inside the 5 that gives you a 1st and goal. The question is always what should we do here? Try to punch it in for the touchdown or kick the field goal. To me it’s a no-win situation. If your team is ahead by 3 pts and you kick the field goal giving you a 6 pt lead,then the other team comes down the field and scores a touchdown to win the game you end up second guessing yourself along with kicking your self in the pants and listening to the fans holler for you to be fired. It’s a damned if you do and damned if you don’t situation.
Me, I would always go for the touchdown being that close to crossing the goal line.

I only see about 150 SBU fans in the stands on Saturday and that’s not including the band members. There were 39K fans in MetLife Stadium last weekend to watch the Orange play USC. It was reported that USC had sold it’s allotment of 4700 tickets which leaves approximately 34K Syracuse Fans in the seats.
I will give SBU fans credit though,they were “LOUD”,do you all hear me “LOUUUUUD”.
We should take cue from those fans and get loud ourselves when supporting our team.

Russell I didn’t have to travel for the SB game,it was held in the dome.
Basketball fans travel in droves. Malone should call down to Madison Square Garden and ask what effects Syracuse moving to the ACC will have on future Big East Tournament’s. I recently read an article that the ACC will try and rotate their tournament to include MSG as a future site because of Syracuse.
Russell, in the end I believe that our fans travel to support the teams. I know that when we traveled to play Akron,the Syracuse fans filled the parking lot(tailgating) that we were in and numbered a little over 5K for the game. I honestly believe that Syracuse and it’s fan support is on par with a lot of other schools when traveling.
@Derek,making those decisions are the reasons all of these coaches make the mega bucks. It also makes great fodder amongst the fans.
