Fizz Radio: Peters’ Coach Tells Us Rakim Watching Recruiting Chess Game

Pass rusher Peters is the next talent who may come through the Georgia pipeline.

The Georgia pipeline is alive and well for Syracuse, and pass rusher Rakim Peters could be the next player traveling it to the Hill. The 6’4” 230 lb. hybrid pass rusher from Winder, GA tells The Fizz he will be taking an official to SU at some point, and his coach Shane Davis joined Fizz Radio this week.

“He’s got really good size, he moves well. He just understands the game. He’s not a burner. But when you watch him play, he plays awfully fast. He gives us a little bit of everything.”¬†

With the loss of Chandler Jones, the Orange defense will be looking for someone like that on the edge. On the fast track of the Carrier Dome, a pass rusher with speed can build a career destined for the NFL. Look at what Dwight Freeney did in his years at SU. But Freeney is undersized for a DE, while Jones is more closely similar in height to the 6’4″ Peters.

Will Peters take his official to Syracuse before the end of his senior season?

“Probably not. Now with the season ready to start, I just don’t know if he’ll be able to do that now. That’s why he has not committed. He did not want to commit to a place he has not seen. He wanted to be around the coaches. Be on campus.¬†He’s a little bit of a homebody. He’s a humble kid, all this is really, really new to him. It’s been a great experience for him. A shy kid, the last thing he wants is the spotlight to be on him. He’d rather it be on his team. He’s just going to try and handle it the best way he can.”

But Davis admits Peters understands he’s playing a bit of a chess game and doesn’t want to be left in the cold. His top 5 include¬†Syracuse, Clemson, Missouri, Kentucky and Mississippi State. But in the world of college recruiting, you can’t always afford to wait until the last moment.

“A lot of schools are going to offer more scholarships than they have. That’s the only thing that has him a little worried. He has a list of the schools he wants to visit, but he’s afraid he may lose out because of somebody committing early. Right now the plan is to wait to take his five official visits (after the season) and make a decision shortly after that.”¬†

The Orange would be wise to be patient with Peters. He’s an incredible talent at a position of need, and has the team-first make up to boot. If his other favorite schools do over-offer, Peters waiting until after the season ends could end up helping steer him to SU and land yet another piece of the Georgia puzzle.

i have no problem with picking up kids from georgia at all i think those are no brainer moves. you need kids that are from the southern states as well. i hope we can pick up these guys, i really do. as far as peters goes yeah we can use him no doubt. i’d heavily say that they really need to consider syracuse.

  2. Ron Avatar

It’s a fine line to walk waiting until your senior season is over before making a decision as to where you would like to play.

Rakim Peters would be a welcomed addition to the Orange. I hope that he doesn’t get left out in the cold when the schools that are recruiting him fill their rosters for 2013.

This would be a huge grab for the CUSE. Go after him now coach, convince him that Syracuse is the place for him to spend the next 4 years of his life at.

    GO CUSE;

By reading daily about the recruits that Syracuse University are after, are we watching history repeat itself by witnessing the resurgence of the football program?
Under the leadership of Coach Ben Schwartzwalder,Syracuse brought in players like Jim Brown,Floyd Little,Ernie Davis and Jim Mackey.
Under the leadership of Dick McPherson we had players like Tim Green,Dwight Freeny,Donavon McNabb,Rob Moore,Kevin Mitchell and Donavon Darius, and all of the above mentioned were great 3 star recruits except for Tim Green who was a 4 star recruit out of Liverpool High School.

Look at the quality of the players that already have committed to Syracuse and the players that we are reading about here on the FIZZ.

I believe that the 360 degree circle bringing us back to a national program is about 90/92% complete. If we are to get the players like the one’s that’s been written about, then the circle will have been completed and we have no one but Coach Marrone to thank for getting us there.

    GO CUSE;

This kid could be the next Freeney, Mitchell or Jones… Hope we get him … Go SU

I agree Ron things look great but lets start with some winning seasons and a bowl or two before talking national prominence although thats where were heading…Norma should be home and posting later,I’ve missed him. TG for the Dipper and the Fizz Fam to keep a smile on my face..

I hope some of our targeted recruits realize the limited amount of schollys available and not take the “Cuse” for granted as though spots will be available 3/4 months down the line?Everyones not EO who we’ll hold the scholly indefinately for! Were starting to become a popular destination!!

@Russ i agree we deserve better than to wait it out for hybrid rushers
@Lou R the dude is a hybrid d linemen he has a long way to go to receive these comparisons at least wait till if he does commit to then but still their is a vast margin for error with that hype
Really glad to hear our name with a school like Clemson who we will be battling in the future… they will be a changed program without taj boyd when we get there

@CD ACC coaches are gonna hate losing kids to SU…in a season or two, but I hate hearing Clem today! Agree about the hybrid kid, he could be a Mlb, or a pass rusher down the road. I don’t see a frosh coming in andand making an impact b4 Poncho…loved his effort in upstate/downstate game…he’ll benefit from prep year, and competition,,6’4″ 235 & growing.
@russ We’ve been sitting on 8 recruits for awhile, coaches have to be excuting a recruiting plan. ZA,Edwards, Marqez, Williams, there are some ball players there, but the work on the field could lead to a good February.

    Peters’ junior stats?

@CDL looks like a couple of the DT reruits will benefit from some weight and conditioning before reporting but thats not unusual for the “big boys”….

  13. bigdip Avatar

Giant talk: “I’m pro anti- Romo” go Carson!
SU talk: that future DL depth could be monstrous. CDL if he goes to prep like DL from Ohio…they reclassify to 2013, which makes him a 3 star, who could be a 4 star DL by/for next recruiting class!
Hey Uncle Russ, those “bigboys” are in camp. Zian, walls, Raymon, etc., what a late summer haul for HCDM…

    * I’ve underestimated HCDM, and I apologize to the Orange fanatics

  14. bigdip Avatar

    * cant remember exact post…referenced: top50(45) class being a win for HCDM, I totally agree! A killer recruiting class is on the way, we can only hope that these guys buy in to the system, bust their tails in the weight room and take their classes seriously. Potential will get them on campus, hard work will determine the mark they’ll eventually leave on the program. They may NEVER rate an SU class in the top25 or 50(lol), but if quality(of recruits) exists like it seems(’11 & ’12),I’ll take it every season.

My wife and I went down to see how our granddaughter who was injured during a 10U softball tournament held in Buffalo over the weekend was doing.
During our visit mu son told me that they have changed the rules on kick offs. The rule now say that instead of the 35 yard line, the ball will be moved to the 40 yard line. If the ball goes into the end zone the player has an option,he takes a knee to down the ball or the option to run it out. If the player takes a knee, the referee will then spot the ball on the 40 yard line to start play. The NCAA rules committee figures that the changes will help reduce the chances of a player getting a concussion.

What say you guy’s? They’re trying to change the game into a non-contact sport. Might as put a bunch of 95/100 wimps out there for us to watch.

This is to the imposter: after reading you comments again and pissing me off even more,I’ve tried to figure out what kind of man would direct his anger to a 15 year old boy who loves the game of football as much as the rest of us.
This is the conclusion that I came too on what your really like. You have to be a man who has had a sad child hood. You have to dress up in women’s underwear and put women’s clothes on and once the transformation is complete you have enough courage built up to throw you anger out to the world in a public forum.

This makes for an awful small person trying to have his message heard. HOW SAD. You need professional help bud,go get some and get the hell of of this web site.

I think we can all agree that none of the core posters on this site ever sound like that “imposter post” that was put up in Rons name lastnight. So from here on out let’s just assume if we see something like that we just understand it is a troll and pay it no attention. Not sure how fizz can stop that type of posting but I hope there is a way.
@russ I am sure CDL is fine he knows better than to think Ron would have posted anything like that. Heck he probably knows way better than us how these Internet blog sites get crazy and trolled up!

here’s more to the story about UNC and it’s fake classes.
North Carolina is investigating how what appears to be a transcript for former football star Julius Peppers surfaced on the university’s website.

The link, which surfaced late Sunday, showed Peppers received some of his highest grades in classes in the Department of African and Afro-American Studies (AFAM). A school investigation has since found fraud and poor oversight in 54 AFAM classes between summer 2007 and summer 2011, with football players making up more than a third of the enrollments and student-athletes making up 58 percent of the overall enrollments in those suspect classes.

If I remember right Julius Peppers was a highly sought after recruit by Syracuse University. With this breaking news, I’m real glad that he decided not to come here to play.

  45. Norma Stitz Avatar
    Norma Stitz

@Ron is it Peppers fault he took the path that UNC laid in front of him or is it UNCs for making that path for athletes to take? This type of stuff happens a lot so we shouldn’t be surprised. And hey of I was peppers or any athlete and didn care about school and the school said, hey come here and we put you in some classes that are pretty much bs classes and you will be eligible and not have to worry about school. Heck I would take that path too! If Peppers would have chosen SU they would have, presumably, made him take real classes and who knows maybe he would have done well.
My point being lets not condemn him for taking the path of least resistance when the rules force him to go to college in the first place. Well if he wants to play in the NFL that is.

  46. Russell MacEachern Avatar

Yeah Norma, these kids are way ahead of us as far as the internet goes, they could take us to school!!Like you said any decorum that smells odd or against our general natures we’ll assume its a troll unless we find out otherwise, though I’ll feel better when CDL sends a post letting us know all’s well!!Poor kid was just getting comfortable!!Dipper always misses out on the excitement here!!…but what I like is he’s never far!

Don’t these young fella’s start back to school soon? The Dip and CDL might be home schoolers as their pretty advanced kids…Id have never thought they were teenager’s by their post’s!!

  48. Ron Avatar

@Norma Stitz, welcome home Norma, I hope the wedding was nice and that you had a good time.

Your right, as we all know D1 football is the training ground for the NFL. The colleges are making huge bucks from what they charge their fans per game and their TV deals,Notre Dame and Texas comes to mind when I say that.

We all know that academics and athletics don’t mix. When a kid who probably doesn’t go to classes any way, leaves college early for the NFL and makes the draft and gets paid millions for their services. You don’t think that it really burns the hell out of them?

Last year when league expansion was the talk of the nation, I thought it was greedy and stupid. Greed has brought a lot of people and organizations to their knees. Now more than ever before I would like colleges to form the 4 super conferences and the schools that are involved turn and tell the NCAA to go to hell.

I want the ACC to go to 16/20 teams. The conference and the games played would be fantastic.

Just my thoughts guy’s just my thoughts.

  49. Ron Avatar

Norma, I don’t blame Julius for doing what he did,I blame the university.

But for the NCAA to come and say that there is no violation because it was available to everyone is ridiculous.
