Syracuse is no longer in the hunt to land South Bend running back David “Boom” Perkins, according to his head coach.
Antwon Jones, the head man at Washington High School in South Bend, tells The Fizz Perkins has decided on a tentative top five that doesn’t include the Orange.
“He’s narrowed it down to basically his top five. He’s kind of teetering with maybe switching one or two of them for like a Michigan or something. Right now I’d say (Syracuse is out of it).”
The five schools currently in the lead for the four-star recruit are LSU, Missouri, Michigan State, Tennessee, and Ohio State.
From the sounds of our conversation with Jones, the only encouraging thing for SU fans is that Perkins is still a long way from making up his mind. Other media outlets have recently reported that Perkins has a firm top five list.  Jones senses that his player may change his mind yet again.
Remember, Boom is a prospect that put Syracuse in the lead way back in May, then promptly committed to Notre Dame, and later de-committed from his hometown school. He has been indecisive throughout the process. It wouldn’t be all that surprising to see his recruitment path swerve off in an odd direction.
But for now, it‚Äôs easy to see why Syracuse has fallen behind in the race for Perkins. Doug Marrone’s best chance to land Boom was at the very beginning of his recruitment, and he almost did. SU knows it needs to get in earlier than better teams for elite recruits and build a relationship to level the playing field. Even during the summer, though, a bigger program was too much for the ultra-talented running back to resist. He passed up the Orange for the Fighting Irish.
There had been reasons for optimism for Orange fans. Upon de-committing from Notre Dame, he immediately called SU coaches. He built up a significant relationship with Tyrone Wheatley. His coach told The Fizz Perkins would likely visit CNY and the move to the ACC was intriguing.
But it’s becoming clear Boom didn’t spurn Brian Kelly to come crawling back to a team that finished in the basement of the Big East this season. There are bigger and better options out there.
Jones says Perkins will not make his final decision public until National Signing Day in February. However, Boom will most likely come to a private conclusion prior to that.
It’s probably time for Marrone and the Syracuse coaching staff to move on and devote its attention on Georgia running back prospect George Morris, who may join DeVante McFarlane as the only running backs in the Orange’s 2012 recruiting class.

Early on Perkins was to visit and SU blew him off. If he truly did call coaches after de-commit – did coaches visit him?

Again you got to blame your man HCDM on this one. But then again this kind of behavior from a player you might not want anyway. Its all on HCDM!!! You who still back this guy will see in the end he’s the problem. Mainly because he does not have the HC experience. And you can feel the pressure is getting to him. Our 2012 recruiting class is at the bottom of the BE now. I don’t think any players he actually signs now will change one damn thing. I just wish the media would be as hard on HCDM and find out whats going on with the program, like it does with Bernie and his accusers.

Get Morris on the hill. His other films are really impressive too. He has good hands, is shifty, breaks tackles and has a nose for the endzone.
Only idiots would ever hope for Perkins to come to Syracuse The child was playing the coaches and fans like an X Box favorite. He wants a big time program and that isn’t Syracuse We are a very long ways from that after this great year.
Derek – I’m with you on this. It’s up to the SU staff to land Morris now. They have to go all in on him. With this offense they need backs, and only McFarlane coming in with this class is not enough.
Agreed, it’s essential that Syracuse hauls in Morris.
Terry, I know you want us to put more blame on Marrone, but it would be a little exhausting to rip into him every time SU lost out on a recruit. Syracuse isn’t going to get everyone, and even though the class isn’t regarded very highly as of now, only time will tell how good it really is. Time, as in, like two or three years from now.

Kanell: Who in the last 2 classes really stands out for the team? So why do you think this up coming class will be any good. We’ll see. But you fans that think HCDM walks on water and you will not give him any grief at all on his methods. I though your the media. If you stomach HCDM’s style OK. If you can’t then do your job and find out REALLY why this program is failing again miserably. DO YOUR JOB!!!

I wrote this article almost a year ago. It was very critical of Marrone at a time when everyone was basically supporting him 100%. Our job is to be fair, and not to completely overreact in either direction. Marrone deserves his share of credit for certain things, and blame for others. I’d like to think we’ve been very fair in our coverage of Marrone.
As for the last couple classes – 2010 was Marrone’s first real shot at putting together a full class, and it hasn’t turned out all that well. Spruill is really the only one who stands out. Jonny Miller is a bust, with Kinder it remains to be seen, Cater and Hawkes are gone, Beaulieu is a huge bust, Tyson-Gulley has been injury-prone but I’m convinced he’ll turn it around as an upperclassman, and Michael Hay and Deon Goggins were good junior college finds.
With the 2011 class many redshirted and all deserve at least another year before we really start to judge them, but from what I can tell, Desir is going to be good, and Reddish will contribute at DB. Cam Lynch and Dyshawn Davis had solid freshman years. Jonathan Fisher was a good find at punter. Jury is still out on guys like Adonis Ameen-Moore and Rob Trudo, but I believe they’ll be very good down the road. Eric Crume should pan out, too. And I believe Terrel Hunt will start at QB in 2013 as a redshirt sophomore.
Overall, though, I think it’s still tough to judge Marrone’s recruiting. A year from now, we can really start to pinpoint who he hit on and who he whiffed on, and decide how he’s done as a recruiter.
