Well, this is now becoming hysterical (as long as you’re one of the schools jumping ship). Just days after John Marinatto tried to sell us that TCU was staunchly committed to the flailing Big MAC, words pops that the Horned Frogs will bolt to the Big 12 after a vote. That would bring the midwestern conference to 10 schools, and to build it back to the twelve needed for a title game, reports say West Virginia and Louisville could get the secret handshakes as well.
“Four days after TCU president Victor J. Boschini Jr. assured Marinatto that his school was committed to joining the conference next season as planned, the Horned Frogs look to be Big 12-bound.”
I mean, how much of a disgrace is the Big MAC turning out to be? This is like the party that was awesome around 7p, then disintegrated into a sloshy dude-filled boozefest around midnight, and now it’s 2a and there’s three kids in the kitchen doing whip-its.
“He told us over and over how much he wants this conference to move forward. There was no wavering at all from him,” Marinatto told USA Today.
This is so pathetic it almost hurts to watch. Marinatto is getting stiffed by a program that has been in the WAC, C-USA and Mountain West in the last decade. You’d trust Marinatto to fix your fuse box, not your athletic conference. He was entrusted with one duty: save the Big East. So what did The Electrician do? Balked at ESPN’s last television offer. Well played, Johnny.

How about this for a double-whammy for the Big MAC? The loss of Syracuse, Pitt and TCU would mean only six football-playing schools – and you need 7 to keep the BCS bowl bid. The solution? Oy vey.
“One possible restructuring possibility now for the Big East is to invite Navy for football only, add Temple and Central Florida for all sports and have Villanova make the move up to the FBS level in football.”
If you’re Rutgers or UConn right now, what are you thinking? “We’re stuck with Navy and ‘Nova? Someone grab the cyanide capsules.” I mean, at least homecoming will be a blast for the Huskies and Knights. You have your pick of the litter of miserable, pitiful football teams to schedule.
If the Big MAC loses WVU and Louisville too, it’s time to just focus all your attention on basketball. Let Rutgers, UConn and Cincinnati beg for mercy at the Big 10, Big 12 and ACC’s doors. Huddle up Villanova, Georgetown, Marquette, St. John’s and try to merge with the power hoops teams of the A-10. You have zero chance of being anything worth fighting for in football. Play to your strength, keep the urban, big city influence in hoops and play games in MSG, Philly, DC and Brooklyn’s new digs.
Would the last one in the Big East, please mop up Bob Huggins’ puke in the bathroom? Thanks.

Pitt fan here. In all honesty, I’d take the old Big East with Miami, VT, BC, and Temple over moving to the ACC. I will miss the rivalry we had with WVU if it goes the way of Pitt/Penn State did. Even more, I’ll miss the basketball matchups with Villanova, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Louisville, and maybe UConn, depending on where they land.
With that said, I’m thrilled to be in a conference where there’s not a fear that every school will take the first opportunity to jump ship.
Furthermore, I wouldn’t trust John Marinatto to pick up my trash. He’s the guy you let watch your house, only to come home and find you’ve been robbed because he was upstairs making sure nobody came in those windows, while the thief came in through the front door that he left wide open.
It’s unfathomable to me that TCU didn’t have to agree some prohibitive penalty if they left in the first 5 years. It’s also unfathomable that the ACC could do exactly what it did 8 years ago and there weren’t measures put in to prevent it. I think Pitt, and maybe Syracuse too, wanted to make the Big East work. Syracuse was a founding member and Pitt didn’t join much later. I know Boeheim and Dixon probably would have preferred to be BE lifers. But when you knew that Rutgers and WVU were going to leave at the first chance they got, you didn’t have much choice when opportunity came knocking.
Someone should be eating crow pie if they were to reinvite Temple into the league,then add Villanova. What a joke!
The Little/Big East is becoming the laughing stock of the college athletic community. Over the last 5 to 10 years I’ve watched probably the best college basketball that’s ever existed and will miss it tremendously.
It’s to bad that Marinatto couldn’t see the positive in what once was.
I’m sure that Marinatto is still seeking and listening to the advice given him from a school president that has it’s own tv contract that doesn’t share any of it’s money with the other members. I know if I were him I would want to listen to the man.
Maybe the Big East should let Marinatto go and hire the jerk out of West Virginia as the new commisioner. You know,loud mouth Oliver Luck,listening to him I know he could straighten out the problems and have the league return to normal.
When you expand to 16 teams your going to have major problems within the conference and as the old saying goes,all good things mut come o an end.
With the problems that the Big East is experencing,the rest of the athletic directors should take notice real hard,it could happen to them.

Marinatto is merely in the wrong place at the wrong time. Inaction all these prior years is the real cause of the conference collapse Normally you don’t blame the person caught in the middle of an avalanche for its cause and effect. He or she is just a victim It happens all the time and the finger gets pointed at the wrong person.

Win or lose, I love my school. I just want every Horned Frog evyhrweere to be happy about this ten years from now.As for speculation: Even though the Big East will soon be deceased, I wouldn’t expect any of those schools to join the Big 12-10. If two schools are added, I would think an invite to BYU is the best move — huge fan base. As for the second school, I’d pick the hated Broncos for the sake of conference strength. Houston, SMU, et al just aren’t good enough to merit a BCS ticket.
