Terribly nauseating that Crazy Eyes Schiano was able to run around the field after a win looking like a terrier who had just been shocked by an electric fence. What is it about this guy? He always seems one traffic jam on the New Jersey Turnpike away from ripping his dashboard stereo out and smashing it over his own head. The final moments, as the officials reviewed the fumble, he went from crying tears of joy with his coaches, to angrily screaming at his players to stay off the field, to composing himself long enough to shake Doug Marrone’s hand. I’m sure he’s the kind of guy who finds it fun to mix a Xanax with a vodka-tonic, just to see how drastically his mood swings.
No matter how much we chop up ol’ Crazy Eyes, this one is on the ‘Cuse. SU controlled the game for the better part of three quarters. Should’ve been a two touchdown lead. That was one of the ugliest games of the college football season. It was reminiscent of the time these two schools played each other in 1914. Jeez. You turn the football over 5 times? Lose the time of possession battle by 13:00 at home? Allow Rutgers to outscore you 10-0 in the 4th quarter (and the Knights missed a GW FG as time expired)?
But nothing stinks as wretched as the special teams. A blocked extra point? A missed field goal and a blocked one? See, that’s just karma. Last week the Orange benefited from pitiful officiating and a phantom extra point. Then Ross Krautman is ironically nominated for the Lou Groza award. All of a sudden, he has the game from hell. SU Athletics should have refused to let the NCAA put him on the Groza list. “Sorry, we’re good. Doug is just going to poke Ross on Facebook. Thanks, though.” The football gods upstairs – Bear Bryant, Ben Shwartzwalder, Beano Cook (oops) – hate that stuff. They’ll make you pay.
Nine turnovers? Twenty-one penalties? Missed kicks all over the place? Truly disgusting. But hey, losing conference games at the Dome is just how we roll.

How about all of the missed opportunities on offense, especially that turnover 5 yards from the endzone? I think Rutgers stopped us three times near the endzone. Terrible.
Credit to our defense though, especially Davis. They looked pretty damn good today, aside from a couple stupid penalties. Marinovich got in there too with some big plays. Once our D is healthy, it’s going to be scary.
All in all, this game reminded me a lot of last season. Defense looked wicked. The offense choked over and over again. A loss at home and just generally a sloppy game. Hopefully Marrone can straighten things out and use this as a wakeup call for our guys going into conference play. Go Cuse!
I agree that was wretched and that’s 4 1/2 hours of my life I’d like to get back.
Syracuse really demonstrated today how a team can give away a victory..this game belonged to the Cuse…I blame the coaching staff for this and not the players…this one is on Marrone and his Offensive staff… the key to the game was that 3rd quarter possesin in the red zone, I think we had 1st and goal from the 4 yard line….Why is Nassib passing? We need a big back down there…..I want to see the big 240 lb. Tailback from Colorado…Ameen Moore….what are we waiting for? Cuse just gave a win away to a Hated Rival…..Rutgers has Talent….but some dumb coaches….this one is going to hurt for a while……but again….I blame this on our coaches….we should have had at least 10 more point in regulation and we win going away……. time to move on though!!!!!!!!
Our Defense looked awesome!!!!!! It is our play calling on offense that is suspect. Nassib had a bad day..bound to happen after a great start….but the play calling did not help him out. Ameen Moore…time to burn that red shirt…he was our highest rated recruit I believe last year. The guy is 240 lbs….. with a great HS record…play this kid. We are hurting at tailback. We need another playmaker…..Our wideouts…… who is stretching the field for us? With a sustained run game….our pass game would be even better…Bailey would be more effective with a strong big back as a change up…… We will miss Prince Tyson Gulley…really liked his speed!!
I agree. I was really hoping to see Ameen Moore. I recall hearing that they were thinking about playing him today. Stupid not too. Bailey just doesn’t have the size to tire the defense like Carter did.
Anyways, I’m reading comments over at syracuse.com and everyone is calling for Marrone’s head. It seems a little early for that, but I’m curious what readers over here think about Marrone at this point.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with Doug Marrone. For anybody that wants him “out” or “his head” because of this lost is just ridiculous. This loss is NOT is fault in the least. In my opinion, I think the coaching staff did a great job today. Liked the play calling (for the most part) on offense, really liked the play calling on defense, and they really seemed to know what they were doing (unlike our old George DiLeone, Major Applewhite and Paul Pasqualoni combo). The real culprit for this loss is on the special teams. Our punter absolutely sucks… he cannot kick the ball more than like 30 yards through the air. Sometimes if the return team lets it bounce, it ends up going like 40 or 50 yards, but otherwise his punts are just short little pooch kicks. We never get any punt returns because we never have any blockers back (which is funny considering we never block any punts either… you would think we could at least do 1 of the 2…). And all year long our kicking has been poor. Even in the Wake Forest game, I can distinctly remember many times where it just seemed like they kept coming inches away from blocking our kicks every single time. They even got a blocked FG at the end if I’m remembering right. We missed that PAT that wasn’t called last week. And now we get another missed FG, a blocked FG that should’ve gone for a TD (can anybody tell me what “personal foul” brought that score back?) and the blocked PAT was the real kicker. Even after the 4 TO’s in regulation, the 2 blown FG’s, and the lost TOP battle, we still would have won if we just converted the extra point… one of the most basic plays in football. SPECIAL TEAMS NEEDS MAJOR WORK!!! Defense looked spectacular today… was it just we played a tremendous game or that their O-line absolutely sucks? Because I don’t remember ‘Cuse getting any pass rush whatsoever in their first few games… the Rhode Island game included. Even the offense had some flashes. At least it’s much better than a Groobers offense… we can at least move the football, gain 1st downs, and score. We may have had a few big mistakes that prevented us from putting up like 20 or 30 something points today, but our offense continues to be balanced. Our passing game is okay, and our running game is okay but too 1-dimensional… what happened to Prince Tyson Gulley today? And who is this Jerome Smith that had 3 ineffective carries today? I agree we should play Adonis Ameen-Moore, or at least give that speedy kick returner Jeremiah Kobena some carries… anybody else agree? In the end, I still say: this loss is NOT on Marrone, its solely on our special teams.

I’m not certain the coaching staff escapes blame here. Three possessions, at no worse than the Rutgers 31 yard line, and they run a total of 8 plays, with two turnovers and a missed FG. And that playcalling right at the very end, 1st down at the Rutgers 37, incomplete, incomplete, incomplete, … picked off?! That’s terrible.
I just don’t think they’ve figured out the best way to call plays yet. They go three and out at the worst possible times. And this game cried out for Ameen-Moore to play. Actually, so did the first three games. Can we get one or two deep bomb attempts during the game?
Oh, if this is what a week of media silence gets you, by all means, allow the media free run of practices from now on.

Hackett definitely needs to be given some grief over his play calling. It’s five games into the season and I can think of maybe five times when Bailey has had success running between the tackles. Hello, earth to Nate Hackett – Antwan Bailey is not Delone Carter, stop trying to use him like he is. Bailey finds reasonably consistent success running off tackle where it’s easier for him to get clear and use his speed. I get that you need to bang it into the middle from time to time to keep the defense honest, but this line isn’t capable of opening up the middle. Mackey MacPherson may be fine in pass blocking and holding his man in place, but he’s just too small no matter how good his technique is to blow a man back off the line of scrimmage. The fact that Hackett and Marrone don’t want to run the ball most of the time in third and short should tell you all you need to know. They don’t trust the line to get short yardage with Bailey. Either Smith or Ameen-Moore need to start getting a lot of carries to get experience and add that power running dimension to the running game.
I had the same thoughts Dr. Bill, why is Nassib passing on 1st down on the 4yd line. Put Adam Harris in the game and let Antwon run off left side like he had been doing all day. I don’t understand why West isn’t getting the ball more. He is tall receiver and has shown to be a big time receiver. You would think the coaches would utilize more in the slot. Davis was a beast today, I hope he continues to get playing time. P. Thomas played well but missed a huge opportunity for a pick 6. You have to make those plays to win games. Very disappointing…..this is worse than getting beat up by your sister. Go Orange!!
Krautman & Schiano both went to the same high school in NJ. Krautman was just trying to do Schiano a favor.
I can’t say this loud enough……Why isn’t Ameen Moore playing? If Rutgers can play it’s freshman QB a series every game to get him experience….why can’t a 240lb tail back get some carries. Bailey is gone after this year….We need to develop a tailback. Price tyson gulley is Gone for the year…….Let Moore Play… running back is usually a position that a good HS player can come in and play in college…..Let this kid play now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought the play calling was horrid. First and goal from the four. The last time we ran Bailey, and he scored in one play. So either run him again, or come off a play action fake to him, right? No. We come out in an EMPTY backfield. HUH? Simply stupid. And what was that third and six inches swing pass all about? We can’t makt the length of a football even though the defensive line isn’t pack in tight? The sneak was a gimme. Then on the last rgulation drive, four straight short throws with the dbs all over our receivers? Why not one pump and go, just to keep them honest? Admittedly our special teams are consistently terrible. Kos rarely get inside the ten, punts are usually around 30 yards, our punt returner seems scared to actually return one, calling for a fair catch at the 7 with no defenders within 10 yards of him, place kicks suffer from consistently bad snaps and no blocking. And our dbs have hands like Marv Throneberry. Still, the play calling lost this one.
Marrone is fine. The problem i have is that he is an offensive guru that coached one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL, but cannot do anything here. Get rid of Hackett, i dont understand his play calling at all. If your argument is the “players” then you cant run a pro style offense with them.
I’m sick of he media built up on Nassib, for someone who has all the tools for the next level, his decision making is awful.
I dont expect SU to win every game, but i do expect some productivity, and if Marrone and SU wants more fans at the dome, then give us a reason to go. Def not going to watch that slop.
Hackett is not an offensive coordinator and is way in over his head. The O should be performing much better than it is and I lay most of the blame at his feet. It has been some of the most bizzare play calling I have ever seen.
Doug’s decision to split the ST coaching among the coaches is not working. we suck on ST and that is on the coaches. Hire an ST coach and while you are at it, hire a real OC.
The D is full of kids and all banged up and they turned in a great performance despite being on the field for like 5 hours longer than RU. THAT is coaching.
We are going nowhere with the present setup. I am a big supporter of DM but he has made two bad staff decisions. We’ll see what happens at the end of the season but it certainly looks like some changes are needed.
On way back to the buses aftr thegame on saturday, a couple of students were say to us that PTG was let go from the team. If that is true then Coach Marrone needs to start playing Ameen-Moore as soon as he can.
The play calling in this game was atrocious. To conservative! I don’t understand the call that was made when Syracuse was on the 4 yard line and decided to pass the damn ball. Why didn’t he just try and punch it in on the ground?
People got mad at Coach P. for being so conservative that led to his dismissal from Syracuse. After what I witnessed at the Pinstripe Bowl last January, I thought that a new era was about to begin with a more wide open offense. Boy how wrong I was to think such a thing.
I have always been overly optimistic about Syracuse Football and this year my predicton for them was to go 10-2 and play Pittsburgh for the Big East Championship on Dec.3rd. With the loss to Rugters and the management deciding to take our seats away from us. I’ve decided that after 20 years of being a season ticket holder they don’t need my optimism and support any longer.
Couple of things guys –
1) I completely agree with you on the playcalling. I’m totally mystified. Much more on that in the Fizz 5 today.
2) Prince-Tyson Gulley was not released and is in no trouble from that regard but he is out for probably the season with a broken collar bone. He’s had surgery according to Marrone post-game.
3) On the same line, I agree with everyone on injecting some Adonis DNA too. Once again, more on that in the Fizz 5.
