On Sunday, New York‚Äôs finest senior prospects were inside the Carrier Dome for the second annual New York State High School Football Classic. Of course,¬†The Fizz was in town to cover the all-star game that had¬†Doug Marrone’s footprints all over it.

Team Fizz breaks down the Upstate-Downstate competition in-depth, and talks exclusively with incoming SU freshmen Terrell Hunt, Ashton Broyld, and Ryan Sloan. Also, in the final segment of the FizzCast we bring you an exclusive with big-time Buffalo quarterback recruit, Chad Kelly.
Some highlights from the interviews:
Chad Kelly: The worry was Syracuse sat a significant distance behind programs like Clemson and Florida State, even though the Orange did crack Kelly’s top seven cut line. But did Kelly’s visit propel SU forward in the race? Based on his glowing remarks on the Syracuse coaches, perhaps.
“Coach Marrone and Coach Hackett, I probably have the best relationship with them out of any of the coaches I’ve talked to.”
If Kelly isn’t just blowing smoke, then there’s definite hope for SU. He mentioned that he’s venturing back to Central New York for another campus visit with his parents before making a final decision, which is another great sign.
Ashton Broyld: His outburst back in April apparently won’t affect the status of his scholarship, and he’ll be in Syracuse by the beginning of football season. In fact, he’s set to arrive much sooner than that.
“I’ll be here July 3rd.”
The Rush-Henrietta quarterback wouldn’t say anything more about the “incident” besides that it is now a private matter between him and Marrone.
Terrell Hunt: His 52-yard touchdown connection with fellow Orange commit Brandon Reddish was ad-libbed.
“It was actually supposed to be a hitch – a comeback route. But he looked at me, I looked at him, he gave me a head nod, and I just said, ‘alright I’m gonna throw it long to you.’”
Looks like the future teammates are already developing excellent chemistry. Wonder The Dougie is second-guessing his reported decision to make Reddish a defensive back after the long score?
Ryan Sloan: The huge defensive tackle from Long Island was excited to notch his first (of hopefully many) Dome sack.
“It’s amazing. You’re in front of a big crowd, and I just wanted to do good for the people that helped me get here. I just wanted to show them what’s in store for the next four years at Syracuse.”
In the second half of the Fresh FizzCast, we provide updates on a couple of high profile 2012 recruits. The key information:
-Four-star South Bend, Indiana prospect David “Boom” Perkins has surprisingly made his decision on a school, when he was supposed to wait until the end of the June to decide. He will announce his choice on Tuesday. His high school coach, Antown Jones, told The Fizz last week that Syracuse was front-runner to land Perkins.
-Last Thursday, Perkins picked up a late offer from Notre Dame, his hometown school. The Irish were reportedly just waiting to make sure Boom’s SAT scores were acceptable before offering him. It appears that Syracuse and Notre Dame are Perkins’ top two choices, with Michigan State as a dark horse.
-Barnegat, New Jersey tight end prospect Ryan Morris has a number of impressive scholarship offers from schools located all over the country, including Syracuse. Curiously though, Rutgers has yet to dish out an offer to the local player. The Fizz spoke with his high school coach, Rob Davis, who said that Morris is a block-first player that also has some receiving skills. With such a diverse batch of offers, the next step for Morris is narrowing down which region of the country he prefers. Coach Davis says they’ll get to work on the process soon.
