Opposing Player Gives Details on Syracuse Recruit Ashton Broyld’s Outburst

“He whipped out his d***, told us all to ‘suck it, f*** you,’ etc. He threw a couple trash cans.”

Henrietta Post

In light of the ongoing legal drama surrounding Syracuse recruit Ashton Broyld, The Fizz has spoken exclusively with a senior captain of Irondequoit High School’s basketball team that beat Broyld’s Rush-Henrietta team the night he allegedly exposed himself. While the player (who asked to remain unnamed) didn’t see the incident first hand, he saw some sort of blowup coming based on how the game was unfolding.

“After the game Ashton was very frustrated. It wasn’t just a single outburst. It was like a 20-minute complete eruption (during the game) where he got four fouls and a technical foul. He freaked out on the court and then freaked out when he got to his seat.”

The Henrietta Post published the picture above with the caption “Broyld throws a tantrum after being ejected out of the game.”

Time on the bench didn’t help settle Broyle’s anger says the player.

“After the game he wouldn’t shake anyone’s hand.”

In fact, Broyld was just starting to boil over.

‚ÄúFrom what everyone told us, he whipped out his d***, told us all to ‘suck it, f*** you,’ etc. He walked back in, threw a couple trash cans in the tunnel, and then went back to his locker room.‚Äù

Irondequoit’s players were already back in the locker room when Broyld – following the postgame handshake – allegedly exposed himself to the crowd. The Henrietta Post – one of the only outlets that¬†gave any details on the story – reported:

“When the game ended — and Rush-Henrietta lost — Ed Stores (Executive Director of Section V Athletics) and an official with Blue Cross Arena say Broyld walked out of the locker room towards the court and in view of the stands. At that point — according to Stores and the arena official — Broyld did ‘inappropriate things to the Irondequoit crowd’ and ‘did things he shouldn’t have done.’ Officials say it involved hand gestures and some other actions.”

It’s truly amazing there wasn’t ever a more clarified account (or video that surfaced) of what actually took place. Every TV camera was already shut off? No quotes from fans who were there? It was the New York Football Player of the Year in a state playoff game in Rochester’s largest facility who had signed with the state’s premier program just a month earlier. Not exactly a tree falling in the woods.

Other news reports stated he “kicked over a water cooler following his team‚Äôs loss, then made an obscene gesture and comment to opposing fans who were taunting him.” Irondequoit fans complained to a police officer at the arena. Broyld was suspended from school for a week and publicly apologized for the incident, although didn’t get into specifics. Broyld’s legal team has denied he actually whipped it out,¬†‚ÄúMy client does not admit to exposure or to a crime being done.‚Äù However, an inappropriate gesture was clearly committed and eyewitnesses say it was indeed frontal exposure.

By all accounts, Broyld is a great kid, so why the explosion?

“We have a really big rivalrly with Rush-Henrietta. Our varsity football teams (which Broyld played on) were undefeated in the state qualifier and they won that game.”

The player also told The Fizz this wasn’t the first time Broyld’s on-field behavior has been less than ideal.

“He was just really, really douche baggy throughout his tenure, especially this year. There’s just some bad blood between him and us. We were the only team to beat him from Rochester this year. That brooding just continued to get his anger to go and go and he just couldn’t stop being a d*** after a while.”

Anyone who’s ever played sports had a moment they’re not proud of in the heat of competition. Likely not to the extent that Broyld did, but it begs the question Рis Ashton Broyld a bad guy? Did Doug Marrone have one slip through the cracks this recruiting class in his strive to get all high character commits?

“I would never say he’s actually a bad guy. It obviously comes out more when you’re the State Player of the Year in football. The press is always going to exploit the bad part of your character. I have a lot of friends at Rush, and I know a couple of people on the basketball and football teams and they say overall he’s a good teammate. He just gets really competitive and that often comes out in a negative way towards opposing teams and opposing players, the crowd, referees, etc.”

Rush-Henrietta Athletic Director Tom Stewart declined to be interviewed for this story, but did say “we’ve handled the situation internally.”

“Ashton’s a great kid, he made an error.”

This is something Irondequoit’s captain agrees with.

“I don’t think he’s a bad guy, but I feel like the competition and what comes out makes him out to seem that way.”

No matter what Broyld‚Äôs legal team decides to cop to,¬†it seems highly unlikely he’ll lose his scholarship at SU. If he was at risk, Broyld would‚Äôve lost it already. The Dougie certainly has enough inside knowledge of the situation and we know he doesn‚Äôt play around.

The Fizz spoke with Broyld on National Signing Day and we loved the kid. With Malcolm Cater and Brice Hawkes still fresh on Orange fans‚Äô minds, let’s hope this was just a bad day at the office for Ashton and he’s truly the solid young man we talked to in February. Not another Marrone dismissal waiting to happen.

Hold up man… How in the WORLD can you possibly use a source that was not present at the time of the alleged happening? You could have interviewed me and i could have told you that, ” yea, i was not even in rochester when this happened, but i heard from the ice cream guy that someone saw him throw an old lady through a window.” Are you really proud of this entry? You are about as credible as Fox News at this point. What did you possibly gain from writing this today?

I met Ashton after the spring football game at Syracuse and he seemed to be an alright kid. Ashton has to learn to control his emotions and temper if he is to succeed at the D1 level. If he does make it at Syracuse, I’m sure that Coach Marrone’s leadership will have a lot to do with his improvement.

    hahahahahahaha!!!

Good commment. I think the story should be dropped. There’s nothing to build off this. Kid made an irreversable error and has to live with it. Hopefully he matures.

He was in the building. He was on the court for the first 18 minutes of the blowup. No he did not see firsthand the exposure but he was there for the rest of it. If the only thing you got out of reading this story was that he didn’t see Ashton whip it out, you’re missing the bigger point.

He was an awful sportsman on the floor and then after the game refused to shake hands and instead chose to flip trash cans. That’s not a Marrone kind of guy. If this is something that happened regularly, do you want this guy representing your team, and possibly in a few years being the face of it as the starting QB?

Like Ron said, Ashton seems to be a really good kid who made awful mistake and I think Marrone and the guys on the team will help him mature, but there was a lot more to this story than him exposing himself.

    Hasselhoff…

YOU are missing the bigger point. The kid lost his composure. It happens. Marrone will take care of that. The problem is quoting a kid who was not there during SAID situation.

At least it’s a better story than them constantly repeating Dion Waiters possibly leaving Syracuse. Every article that week was about the same exact thing with no different insight. I didnt learn one thing from them during that stretch

Didnt i already tell u guys the same story like hmmm months ago? I wasnt at the game but new somone who was and had another source that told me the same story.I havent heard one good thing said about broylds besides that hes a hell of a athlete.

J Hughes, it sounds like you’re losing your composure.

It’s perfectly reasonable to quote a player who witnessed most of the temper tantrum first hand and then spoke to classmates who saw the rest of the incident. That’s a credible source, and your comparison to “the ice cream guy” makes you sound like a fool.

Your comment saying “if this something that happens regularly?” would be a better story than what you wrote. Does it? That is something that you should dive into, not exposing this wrong doing that everyone knows about. We all know that he exposed himself and flipped out. But is this something that can be fixed, one freak accident or is this his real character? that is a good story. Keep it up and dig for insights, look forward to more posts

    KJ …

I clearly was not losing my composure. Good post though, and very insightful. I have lost my composure in the past im sure as we all have. Maybe we should stop beating the dead horse that IS this situation and let the kid move on and try and improve himself.

The player says in the story that he was consistently a “douche baggy guy” on the field for football and on the court in basketball – especially this year.

Also just to clarify – this wasn’t about exposing what happened (no pun intended). We clearly know and have known the incident itself since it happened in March, this is more exploring the buildup and why. If we find someone who saw it first hand, we can get into the details of what happened (if anyone did see or knows anyone, please email us!) we will explore that then. As for now, it is more about “how did this happen?” and is his less than ideal on field behavior common, which it clearly is – this time it just boiled over.

I’m from the Rochester area- I wasn’t the game but the sportswriters at the Democrat and Chronicle have been drinking his bathwater… they barely even ran anything about the story, and he’s supposed to be a good kid. I think it should be scratched from his record but in the backs of the coaches minds in case something happens again where he’s out of line.

Here is the bigger reason for this article that noone has hit on. The biggest atribute a quarterback has to to have is judgement, clearly Ashton seems to be lacking in this area……Who if he is “douchey” on the feild…it is when he engages the fans after some 20 minutes of retardedness, this kid is severely lacking good judgment. Sounds like hed be a great weakside linebacker.

  16. 86trash Avatar
    86trash

Wow, I butchered that last part. Who cares if he is douchey on the feild? It is when he engages fans after some 20 minutes of retardedness, that concerns me. This kid is severely lacking in the good judgement area, sounds as though he would make a great weakside linebacker.

86trash… while you may be right that he is probably lacking good decision making skills at this point, THAT is what growing is all about. HCDM is THE man to rectify the way this kid may be currently acting. It would be a great success story and I would like to see a kid with many tools learn how to be a man and grow into something spectacular. Am I the only person here that wants to help this kid out and see him flourish? What is wrong with our society if we want to just brush this kid aside and forget about him because of one bad judgement?

  18. 86trash Avatar

How do you figure moving an elite athlete to a position where he thinks less and reacts more isn’t helping him out? High school quarterbacks are chosen because they have the best athletic ability crossed with the best arm, that will not be the case a SU. Lets ask this question, how good was Hogue and Smith on offense?……Now how much better were they on defense, and how much better off was our team.
Additionally, if HCDM is the man to teach Broyld………..why wasn’t he man enough to teach Malcolm Cater, who was ineed a superior athelete

  19. johnboy Avatar

Unbelievable. The kid has got a legal team and admits no wrong doing. Just swell. He should be a great addition to any team at the next level who values a win over education once again By defending his sorry actions they have now encouraged him to do it all over again with no ramifications.. I live in Pennslyvania but was brought up in Webster, New York during the 50’s and early sixties(Section v where Rush-Henrietta is located) Kudos to R-H for suspending him. Frankly, I would make it a permanent suspension. R-H and others should care less about his D1 scholarship and be completely mortified by his morals and citizenship. As for his parents, his life should be hell on earth. Apparently this individual dropped his moral compass somewhere and needs to retrace his steps and find it. At this point I would not give him a snowball chance in hell of being successful in the context of what most people value as success.
