FizzCast: Who’s To Blame for Syracuse’s Early Exit in the NCAA Tournament?

Team Fizz debates how much fault is at the feet of Scoop and The Per’fesser.

Dennis Nett/ Post Standard

‚ÄúI think Syracuse fans have always felt this way ‚Äì that SU basketball‚Äôs season would come to an end because of its Achille’s heels.‚Äù

Those were the words of D.A. on last night’s Postgame FizzCast, and that’s the way all of Team Fizz feels. We knew all along that this team was maddeningly inconsistent, with problems focusing for the full 40 minutes, turnover issues, and a lack of interior depth. Sure enough, the Orange took a premature exit to the 2011 NCAA Tournament, and those were the main culprits.

A guy who tends to garner tons of blame from the fans following losses is Scoop Jardine. This defeat was no different. Team Fizz was divided on how much to pin things on the point guard from Philly.

D.A: “You hate to put it on one guy. It is a team game. But the final minute plus is defined by Scoop. The ridiculous decision to try to tiptoe the half court line when the inbounds pass can go back in the back court, when you can go back there and track it down, is a silly basketball IQ mistake. And then down three to come back down the floor and to just launch when you don’t have to take a three, when you can settle for a two, foul, and play the free-throw shooting game, is also a stupid decision.”

Hoffman: “It’s very easy to look back at this game and go, ‘Scoop was the reason Syracuse lost.’ That three at the end of the game wasn’t a good shot. You can blame Scoop all you want for that. But you can also blame Jim Boeheim for letting Scoop get that shot off and not calling timeout.”

Conroy: “I am going to be the defender of Scoop here. Scoop made some bad decisions. Scoop took a bad shot at the end. Scoop was in a position to win the game in stretches and did not win the game. This was no different than anything that happened all year long. So why is he in that position? Why is he being trusted with the ball to win the game? Why is Kris Joseph, your leading scorer, not in a postion to win the game? Why couldn’t you get an entry pass to Rick Jackson, arguably your best player, to win the game? Why is Scoop Jardine being tagged with these late-game situations, and why are Syracuse fans so appalled with Scoop when these games turn out like they do.”

Kanell: “Scoop Jardine is the guy that this team lives upon, and tonight it died by him. I don’t think much of the time he can be blamed for that. You have a bunch of other guys that have too many flaws to take over games. How does the blame then fall on Scoop Jardine for that?”

Check out the Postgame FizzCast for the rest of our thoughts on the way Syracuse’s season wrapped up. D.A. talks about the frustration of the Orange’s NCAA Tournament early-round struggles year after year. Hoffman calls in from the Cleveland, and describes a distraught Rick Jackson and robotic  Boeheim following the game. Conroy and Kanell look ahead to next season, and debate how much confidence we should have in the incoming freshman class. Will the team really be deeper in 2011-2012, or is it a mirage? Either way, it’ll be a while until fans come to grips with the fact that this season is over. We at The Fizz will do our best to help you get through it.

It’s Boeheim’s fault for not using 1 of it’s last 2 timeouts after DJO hit the 3 to go up 3 with 25 seconds remaining and set up a play.

Scoop is not a starter or a player that should be handling the ball late in a close game. Scoop is a good player, but His basketball IQ for a PG is way below the average of any other PG in the country. Besides, you would have thought he would have learned from the OT game last week against UCONN not to hoist up a 3.

And the turnover’s that lead to Marquette points is unacceptable for this team late in the year. I just don’t understand where the ‘Cuses mindsets were last night.

i do a agree. what was JB thinking? He has to know that jardine was just goin to chuck it. Most of the time i agree dont call a TO go down and run ur O but with this team and lack of pg you got to call a TO and set somthing up. Awful way to end the season but if MCW or TC cant come in next yr we will have the same problems.

Bottom line is that Scoop is a horrible player. You guys at the Fizz can sugar coat it all you want. Scoop should NEVER, EVER be a starting PG for any team (in D1) yet alone a team like SU. Unfortunately, we as fans will have to deal with him next year which make next season a repeat of this season.

When is Boeheim going to recruit like coach K and get SMART players. I don’t care if the FAB 5 thinks those type of players a “Uncle Toms” that is the reason Duke wins all those games. Smart players not street ballers win basketball games.

Perhaps Scoop will “leave” school early like Paul Harris did. And on another note: only tywo of the eleven Big East squads in the tournament are remaining after three rounds. What does this mean for the Big East exactly?

  5. todd Avatar

Scoop makes terrible mistakes all game. The problem is that the other ball handlers wouldn’t be able to get the ball up court. Everyone would press Syracuse all game with anyone else at point. SU won 27 games without a point guard. So everyone can keep piling on Boeheim but he had to do what was necessary to be competitive.

Scoop is not a horrible player, and which three do you think he should have learned from the two he made to put the U Conn game into OT or the one he missed at the end. Scoop is the one guy on this team that takes it upon himself to win games; the problem is that he is not talented enough to do it. He is Kemba Walker without the same talent. He can’t shoot, he can’t jump and he’s slow, but you know what he has done OK. His IQ – probably not high enough with his level of experience – and that is what SU lacked this year. A smart player, a leader, so Scoop tried to be that guy.

Stoop has low basketball IQ to say the least. This years tournament is full of such players. He is the QB and as such is evaluated by he manages and executes on the floor. In a vast number of ways he is the weakest link on the team and barely a plus if you used a plus minus system to assess him. I want to wish otherwise, but the truth is his low basketball IQ is the reason, he just does not understand the game or his opponents.

Mikey, for the UCONN game the 1st 3 Scoop hoisted up to cut the lead to 3 in regulation he banked in and by no means was a great shot. The one he hit to tie the game he had to get off with a limited amount of time and was a “clean shot” meaning there wasn’t a defender in his face. Still a good shot and i think Scoop is a good shooter.

Scoop worked hard this past off season by goin to camps and playing for the USA basketball team. But his role is a point guard, a floor general, meaning he needs to get his scorer’s the ball and run the offense. Too many times this year he put himself and the team in bad situations. He tries to force way too much.

Scoop is a red-shirt Junior. He should be graduating this year and still makes the mistakes of 1st and 2nd year players.

My problem is more with JB. He didn’t coach the last minute of the game. He easily could have set up a better out-of-bounds play that led to the DJO 3. Marquette had man to man pressure the entire game, they weren’t slackin off ‘Cuse players. After the 3 he should have called a TO to settle the players down and set them up with a better game plan instead he elects not to therefore Scoop shoots an ill advised 3 with 2 defender’s in his face.

Boy JB gets away with another one. He berated these kids all season. He’s getting sinical about all kinds of issues!! You can see it this year and also with his rant about GMac a couple of years ago. JB is not taking these early exits well and its wearing on him. No he does not need to be let go, but a fresh face in a couple of years might kick start this program back into its right place. JB know he has cut proof tenure and nothing will change. This incoming team ought to be something with all the talent. JB never had this much talent on his bench.

well no matter how you dice it this team was incredibly inconsistent. They could beat any college team in the country, and lose to any team in the country. You never knew what you were going to get on any given night.

Until we define turnovers more clearly, we will never be able to define players true abilities. Drives to the basket by a point guard, that has no outlet and gets blocked or easily rebounded are turnovers just as sure as a walk or a toss of the ball out of bounds. A glory taken three pointer with no one under the basket to rebound because the team is not set is a turnover 66 percent of the time, since only 33 percent are made at best. Yet these drives and launched quick shots are not considered turnovers, but should be by the coaching staff. If nothing else they indicate a degree of immaturity and a lack of playing within the team concept. When a team has 18 turnovers plus a myriad of things which I consider as turnovers, there is little chance of winning. We look at assists and turnovers and anoint players as great with little regard to how they play the game. The way I see it none of our players are on the positive side of the statistics since they give up more points than they make with their assist, and goals. We also make spokespersons for the team, players who have not earned the role. A big mouth in the locker room opining on other players abilities is really bush. The media makes stars out of players where none exist and unfortunately, the coaching staff lets the players vent to the media, as well as take stupid shots in an attempt to create star status for themselves. I find it amusing that a player who is hot for the first five minutes of a game can disappear from the scoring and the flow of the game without a notice from the coaches. It seems Trish is not favored by the Philly contingent and can’t be the go to guy. Unfortunately with the same cast and little chance to see a different point guard, next year will be more of the same, and dreams of a team that can go far in the NCAA are just that a dream.
