I covered Syracuse athletics during the Jake Crouthamel era. I flew the Syracuse football charter with him to places like Cincinnati and East Carolina when he was stone-quiet, staring ahead like a cadaver in the front row. I was courtside during basketball games when he would stalk the sidelines at the Dome like a graying mountain lion. I ducked into bathrooms on numerous occasions and brushed by him memorably smoking his beloved cigarettes in silence.

But let the current A.D. handle the public conjecture about Syracuse, Jake. This is an old director trying to stay relevant by critiquing every one else’s film.
Once upon a time, you couldn’t get Crouthamel to say a word. Now, you can’t get him to shut up.

Good article but he is wrong on one point. The legacy of Jake and buzz forever changed (for the worse) with the ACC debacle!! Va Tech-Pitt-Rutgers-WVU came to SU with what was basically an armistice. They had a written aggreement they all were willing to sign promising to stay in the B.E. if SU would also. Sure we were ACC bound, they refused. Then politics in VA took over and the ACC instead took Va Tech and BC who was begging to be taken. If we sign, the Hokies, and likely BC, are still in the B.E. and our Conference is much more stable. Then, instead of seeing the school and conference through the dark times, he opted for retirement. You couldn’t get it right then Jake so the least you could do is shut the hell up and let the people in charge do the talking now!!
