Greg Schiano has not only won another recruiting war against Doug Marrone – he walked into Syracuse’s backyard to do it.
Quentin Gause, an All-State linebacker from Rochester’s Bishop Kearney High School, commits to Rutgers after an unofficial visit Friday.
He also received full scholarship offers from Syracuse, Buffalo, Louisville, Duke and Akron. He’s a Rivals 4-star recruit and a U.S. Army All-American nominee.
Gause recorded 114 tackles, six sacks and one interception. He doubled as a running back, racking up 800 rushing yards and 200 receiving yards. Gause scored 14 touchdowns for a team that finished 5-3.
It’s beyond disheartening that a (really good) Rochester product would choose to spend four years in freakin’ New Jersey rather than slide an hour down I-90 and play at the Dome.
New York in general does not manufacture top-tier football talent. Long Island and New York City metro will occasionally pump out the four and five-star kid. This is why¬†Marrone has gone to such lengths to create goodwill and trust between the state’s high school coaches and SU. When there is talent in New York, Syracuse must capitalize. When it’s upstate? That kid can’t get away.
But the wreckage left behind by Groobers is still smoking. Many of you will tell this Fizz scribe, “Let it go D.A. Are you gonna blame everything that ever goes wrong this century for Orange football on one guy?”
My answer: at least right now, yes.
Here is a young man who grew up and played high school ball an hour and change from the Syracuse campus. He had a scholarship offer from both the Orange and Knights. His major? Communications, because he’d like to go into sports broadcasting one day.
Ten years ago it was unheard of for Rutgers to win this battle. Five years ago, people still wondered if Schiano could get to bowl games consistently. Rutgers is known for sports broadcasting as much as it is aeronautics and genetic engineering. This was an SU slam dunk. Newhouse or Snookie?
But the tides have turned. And for that blame Groobers. There’s obviously credit that goes to Schiano and the Knights for doing their part to turn around that disaster. But Groobers failures reached such depths, it’ll be a few years to dig out from. Syracuse went from a consistent bowl program which always nabbed the Quentin Gauses’ of the world – to two-win seasons, national scorn and losses to Akron.
If Groobers was able to even keep the Orange a .500 program and nab a four-star kid every once in awhile, Gause would likely be sporting Orange. If Groobers could have merely avoided turning the name “Syracuse football” into mud, things would be different.
Instead, Marrone is still in for the fight of his life – and a 4-star linebacker/ aspiring sports broadcaster from Rochester just chose Rutgers. Argh.

To be fair, NSD is a long way off. If you didn’t lose him to Rutgers, you might have lost him to Miami.
Actually, it’s hard to hang it all on GRob. If Daryl Gross hadn’t fired Paul Pasqualoni only days after taking over as AD, Syracuse would had Ray Rice in orange… instead of watching him run for 384 yards and 4 TDs against them over three years. That move is probably the best thing that’s happened to Rutgers since Schiano signed his contract.
There’s no doubt the damage the silver fox did will be felt for years and the rise of the Rutgers program unfortunately coincided with that. We lost this one, but a couple of more beatings of RU like the one SU adminstered last year will turn this around. Keep the faith brother.
Russinator – I appreciate the optimism. If Miami or a nationally ranked program wanted him, it’s hard to feel like that’s a tough loss. It’s just this is the EXACT kid you have to win. And I never had a problem replacing P – just the guy they did it with.
Hey for months I have asking the media about why is it so hard a sell to NY/NYC/LI and etc. recruits that Syracuse is the place for them. Marrone has planted a seed that is growing and the media just ignores it. Are you afraid to rufal a few of Marrone’s feathers??? It sure looks like it!! Not going Syracuse is not all blamed on the recent record. Its got to be why all the players are leaving. Other programs out there recruiting the same kids we are have to be telling the kids about Marones actions on the players leaving. Yet no reason from the media to get on Marrones back on this issue. I guess we have to wait until he gets fired to find out why his actions effected this team. Yes we have got talent from our area but its seond tier at best. We need to harvest all of that talent to say D-1. Media do your job!! And find out why is is happening!!!
The reason he didn’t go to Syracuse is cause he wants to win, play in a great stadium, play in the Big Ten, play in the NFL, and get a great education. Syracuse offers none of this. BTW the dome is a terrible place to play/watch football.

Rutgers may not be the place to go for broadcasting – unless you’re Becky Quick (CNBC) or Natalie Morales (The Today Show on NBC) but let’s set them aside for a second – or Aeronautics, but Genetic Engineering? Rutgers offers an undergraduate degree in Genetics. Does Syracuse?
Also, Snookie is a product of New York State; New Jersey just made her a star.
Terry – I don’t follow. You think that something Marrone is doing behind the scenes is hurting recruiting? Or just dismissing kids? I guess it’s not the most popular stance in the world, but for all of the relationships Marrone is making with NYS HS coaches – I can’t blame this all on him. The program is still a 4-win program and a nat’l joke. That’s the biggest reason bar none.

When there’s 50,000 people ringing car keys while VT or Miami sets up its offense, it’s a pretty bad ass place to watch football I must say Dom. And if he’s betting on playing in the Big 10, there’s a four-year wait period before they can buy out. So that’s Dom argument fail.
SoaO, I’m pretty sure Rutgers is not known for that genetics program – and let’s not even try to compare Becky Quick and Natalie Morales to half the sports media hall of fame – Marv, Stockton, Costas, Tirico, Glickman, etc. Not a fair fight.
