The Fizz tracked down the newest member of Syracuse hoops, Michael Carter-Williams. This is the Orange’s first hoopster for the class of 2011. They just keep getting younger, huh?
Carter-Williams, who goes to St. Andrew’s School in Rhode Island, toldThe Fizz that he made a call on Sunday to Syracuse University assistant coach Mike Hopkins, verbally committing to Syracuse.
Things changed for Carter-Williams over the last couple summers as he went to the SU basketball camps held each year.
He says the Orange wasn’t really recruiting him as recently as two summers ago, but that changed a few months ago. MCW says he had always wanted to play in a big place like Syracuse.
So Hop does it again.
“Coach Hopkins is a great guy. He’s the one that really was calling me from Syracuse. He’s one of the big reasons I’m going to Syracuse. He’s a good person and I feel like he can take my game to the next level on and off the court.”
Carter-Williams says he wants to get into the Newhouse School and either go into broadcasting or become a coach some day.
Other schools looking at him included Villanova, Virginia and Providence which he took visits to along with Syracuse. The junior says he felt most comfortable at the ‘Cuse and the reputation of the communications program played a big part in his decision.
His high school season starts a few weeks from now and he says he just wants to win and fulfill a leadership role on his team that was empty in years past.
Interestingly enough, Demtris Nichols went to the same high school and Carter-Williams says he has met the former SU star, but hasn’t really had the chance to talk over his decision with D-Nic.
He’ll be back on campus around Thanksgiving weekend when¬†The Fizz will look to catch up with him again.
