Last week here at The Fizz we introduced you to Trevor Cooney, a hot target for the SU coaching staff. Cooney attended Early Evening Madness last week on the Hill and is a junior at the Sanford School in Delaware.
Trevor has offers from most of the basketball powers on the East Coast; Syracuse, Villanova, Notre Dame, Maryland, Wake Forest, West Virginia, Georgetown, Rutgers, Cincinnati, and Duke.
Trevor and his coach at Sanford, Stan Waterman talked to¬†The Fizz to break down Trevor’s game and where he’s at in the recruiting process.
(Side note: Waterman was a point guard for the University of Delaware and is the long time coach at Sanford.)
Waterman describes Cooney as “complete player” who not only succeeds on the court, but academically as well.
As for Trevor, he says he’s just taking his time to make his decision and that his visits are probably done for this year, but there’s still a lot that he liked about Syracuse.
Exciting news for Orange Nation, Cooney ranks Syracuse very high. He’s not officially placing schools in any order, but how about this:
“If I was to have a list, maybe (Syracuse) would be at the top of the list, but as of right now I really don’t have a list.”
On the ‘Melo Center:
“It’s definitely one of the top (facilities) that I’ve seen. It has everything… very impressive.”
Also sounds like Trevor came away impressed with Midnight Madness:
“Midnight Madness was not what I expected it to be. It was a lot more people there. It was definitely a great experience up there. It was like a game.”
On his relationship with the SU coaching staff:
“I talk to the coaches as much as I can. I like to get in contact with them and try to build a relationship with them.
And Syracuse assistant coach Mike Hopkins has been the point man for Trevor in the whole process:
“I’ve built a good relationship with Hop, so we’ve become pretty close over the last year or so.”
Practice starts on Friday the 13th of November for Sanford, and Waterman says he’s looking for Cooney to become a more vocal leader on the court this season.
