Syracuse to Welcome Large Group of Recruits This Weekend

This weekend could go a long way towards SU getting back on track.

It hasn’t been the best of weeks for Syracuse football. Last Saturday¬†a 28-7 loss to Boston College ended the Orange’s season with a final record of 3-9, but Head Coach Scott Shafer will have no time to wallow in self-pity; he has guests to entertain.

While the students are busy studying for finals this weekend, Syracuse football will be hosting 15 recruits, of which five are commits and 10 have yet to make a decision.

These recruits are:

Commits:
Evan Adams; OL, 73 out of 100 Rating on ESPN Recruiting Nation
Marquise Blair; ATH, 76 Rating
Keivonnis Davis; DE, Not Rated
Trey Dunkelberger; TE, 70 Rating (Played Junior College at Pierce College)
Dana Levine; DE, 74 Rating

Targets:
Steven Clark; DT, 70 Rating
Jonathan Crawford; ATH, 77 Rating
Amir Ealey; TE, 75 Rating
Doyle Grimes; OLB, 75 Rating
Donavan Hale; ATH, 73 Rating
Matt Keller; LS, 69 Rating
Qaadir Sheppard; TE, 75 Rating
Tyree St. Louis; OL, 81 Rating (Committed to Miami)
Calvin Steyn; OL, Not Rated
Jazzee Stocker; S, 79 Rating

It’s a lot of players to try and impress in one weekend, but the Orange need to get to as many recruits as they can and convince them that this season was merely a fluke.

Players such as Ealey and Sheppard could make an immediate impact in a Syracuse offense that was less than mediocre this year, and playing time should be one of Shafer’s selling points for them and most of the team’s offensive recruits.

The Orange are now in full-out recruiting mode, and after a depressing week of multiple recruits decommitting it will be nice to see some potential players that are still planning on or interested in making the Carrier Dome their home. This offseaon will test the recruiting abilities of Coach Shafer and the Orange coaching staff more so than ever, as the 2014 squad left little positives to point to.

I think one of the major recruiting tools will be the new IPF building. It’s approximately 85-90% completed, the carpet is laid down and after they get to look at the Manley Complex then go over and have a look at the new building should sway quite a few of these kids to commit to Syracuse. I’m hoping that Coach Shafer and staff (including George McDonald)takes a different approach with these kids than what Doug Marrone did in the past by getting involved with them and talks to them while they’re here. That could be a game changer too. Go get em coach,I hope you bring all 15 home to the Orangenation to play football. I could be wrong here,I think there is names on that list that we haven’t heard much about. Could that be the reason that some of the previous recruits decommitted? Leaves one to wonder as to why, doesn’t it?

New names are not that new, and some of the coaches were in to visit Daiquan Kelly today too.

Sheppard and Ealey are being recruited at DE. It is my understanding that Stocker and Crawford are two reasons we moved on from Robinson. Feel good about Clark. St. Louis is a long shot, but he went to high school with RS Frosh Ward. Grimes is staying with his old friend and former teammate as well.

Ron, while I don’t think the Wisconsin RB would have wound up here, being from Wisconsin and all, the most disturbing part is not being talked about. His HS coach, who brought him is an SU football alum. Just like the RB Stanbeck at UCF who was pushed away by Marrone. We really need to connect with our alums. They have their hands on talent.

Malone,I mentioned in an earlier post(on another thread) about his highschool coach being a Syracuse Alum and that he played football for the school. When I read the article on syr.com about these four visiting back in 2009 all I could think about was the article about the different coaching staffs of McPherson and Pasqualoni and GROB shuting down parts of NYS because they both thought the talent wasn’t there and then read that the talent they thought didn’t exist ends up playing in the NFL. It leaves me wondering what the hell is going on up on the hill!!!!!

I know from what I’m reading and hearing the future of Syracuse Football is going to have some major problems. The new chancellor wants a new stadium and if it does get built move it off campus. I hope if a decision is made to build a new stadium they make a decision to keep it on campus.

I mentioned the new names because I haven’t read a thing on any of them,so I guess I need to get busy. Thanks for your input.

    Malone;
One other thing that I keep forgetting to mention. I just don’t see the doom and gloom for the program because of these 4 decommits who many think were in part caused by Georege McDonalds demotion. I just don’t see it.

Ron, sorry if I came off bad for the “not new”. Just excited to be moving forward. Don’t like all the negative reporting on this matter, especially because it simply isn’t true. We moved on from Lindor and Robinson, same as Kittles last year if you remember. As I mentioned to Seth in his article, it is not for Lindor to decide if he thinks he fits our new system, it is for the coaches and if they don’t think it will work, you don’t give away precious scholarships for the heck of it, you move on. I think the only de-commit the staff is upset about right now is Kelly, because they are still talking to and visiting him. I don’t think any of this is some sort of backlash to the McDonald demotion. These kids claim to have gotten the silent treatment in Sept. and the demotion was in Oct.

    Malone;

I’ve never taken any of your comments the wrong way,so you never have to apologize for making any of them. Going over the list I realized that there were a lot of new names that none of us have mentioned. I especially took notice of Tyree St. Louis; OL, 81 Rating (Committed to Miami). If he de-commits from the “U” and commits to us,it then destroys the above post and kills any future comments made of Shafers demotion of George McDonald in the media. I’d love to see all of these guys come to Syracuse. I also find it fascinating that guy‚Äôs who have de-committed, Devantae Davis,Daiquan Kelly,Gerald Robinson Doyle Grimes haven‚Äôt committed to another program yet. I‚Äôve also checked the recruiting websites and noticed that Tyrone Wheatly JR. hasn‚Äôt committed to anyone yet. Do you think Michigan having problems and firing their head coach Brady Hoke has anything to do with him delaying his decision?

I’ve always enjoyed reading your(logical/sensible) point of view on things.

With UAB shutting down their football program we should snag a few players to jump start us the way marrone did with Hofstra… Grab their best interior lineman and the Rb who had 262 yards last game…they have 6 wins they have players

After talking with some of the players that chaperoned the recruits over the weekend and the articles that came out in the papers on Monday, all of the recruits were really impressed and could get a few of them to commit. Everything sounded good and the current players were impressed with what they saw.

Let’s all hope we get a good share of them here.
