While Syracuse dominated on the field this weekend, it wasn’t all smiles off it.¬†Defensive¬†recruit Daiquan Kelly¬†announced on Twitter he has flipped his commitment from Syracuse to Penn State. The New Jersey native was recruited to play safety for the Orange but will play linebacker for the Nittany Lions. Last week the NCAA announced reduced ¬†sanctions against Penn State that resulted from the Jerry Sandusky scandal. The announcement does not affect the 2015 class however; Penn State is still limited to only 20 scholarships for freshmen next year. Kelly‚Äôs switch definitely hurts, but the Orange still has safeties Treevon Prater, Christoher Frederick, Marquise Blair and corner backs Gerald ‚ÄúBubba‚Äù Robinson, Andrew Spence and Daivon Ellison coming in to the secondary next year.
The road grader tandem of Sam Clausman and Colin Byrne have been the strength of St. Thomas Aquinas offensive line. But over the weekend Don Bosco upset St. Thomas Aquinas, the number one team in the country, 24-7. Daivon Ellison’s Don Bosco (NJ) squad had a tremendous night defensively against St. Thomas Aquinas’ highly touted offense. The second-rated team in New Jersey recovered a fumble on St. Thomas Aquinas’ first play from scrimmage that resulted in a touchdown. Aquinas responded on the next drive with a touchdown but failed to score again in the game.
Running back Dontae Strickland rushed for 142 yards on 15 carries Saturday as his South Brunswick (NJ) team knocked off Middletown South (NJ) 36-24. Strickland broke a 75-yard touchdown run in the 3rd quarter and a 25-yard touchdown run in the fourth.
Shy Cullen is being recruited to play linebacker for SU, but Cullen rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns in Lowell’s (MA) demolition of Dracut (MA) Friday night. Cullen also forced a fumble in the game. The two-way star was taken out of the game early in the third quarter due to the lopsided score line.
Game to Watch Next Week: Defensive end commit Brandon Ginnetti’s Hamden Hall (CT) hosts 2016 linebacker recruit Koby Quansah’s Kingswood Oxford (CT) Friday night at 6:30p.
