Look, I understand I’m a tad biased here. But the final call on C.J. Fair’s “charge” was complete horse-crap. Everyone with a working knowledge of college basketball’s updated rule book can agree. Under the current interpretation of the rules, that needs to be a block or no whistle. It can’t be on the offensive player. It was an obnoxiously poor call that robbed Syracuse of at worst a tie game.
Should Boeheim have shown more restraint there? If you’re looking for soulless, emotionally empty computers, inputting info and spitting out coaching decisions, yes. Bill Belichick grabs a ref at the end of the Pats/Ravens game in ’12 because he knows he just witnessed a complete officiating disaster. This is a man known as the most unemotional coach western civilization has ever produced.
But Boeheim realized the severity of that situation. It essentially ended the game. Yes, Jay Bilas was technically correct. The game was not over. But it certainly was “over.” Down two, Duke inbounding, ten seconds left? I don’t like my chances at Cameron Indoor in that spot, especially in the immediate aftermath of that “charge” call.
Boeheim was right in his fuming over that call. He’s also right in suggesting postgame you leave that game in Durham, and move onto Maryland during the flight back. Personally, I think it showed pretty good character for Syracuse to lose to BC and then get to Cameron Indoor and put up a hell of a fight like that. I’m not worried about their will in March. I’m more worried an officiating crew like this one has the last word.
Syracuse had just put up with the fans, the officials and a really good Duke team for 39 minutes and 50 seconds. But one whistle and all that is thrown out of the window. His team’s two-hour fight rendered irrelevant by an atrocious whistle. And Boeheim couldn’t calmly explain in the heat of the moment just how wrong it was. How hard is that to understand?

What made that call even worse was the block call they made on Gbinije earlier in the second half in a some what similar situation.
We feel the same about the non call on hood at Cuse, and the charge called on parker up there… Not to mention Fair was out of bounds before even driving. It happens and you have to keep your cool. That being said, I still love Boeheim and I’m still excited to have you guys in the conference. Hopefully we will get another chance for both of us on a neutral court. By the way, please pound Maryland!!!
@Marty – I couldn’t disagree with you more on the Hood call. Rak got ball before body and was a great call. Parker charge I can agree with you on. But Gbinje was called for a “blocking” call on Parker, which was awful and the Fair “Charge” was match that lit the powder keg. Both terrible calls. And I liked Boeheim’s antics/fire.
Now any fan of college basketball for the past 25-30 years know that DUKE WILL ALWAYS GET THE CONTROVERSIAL CALLS. Its the way it has and will continue to be. I don’t think there is some conspiracy, but refs need to eat their whistles in close tight knit games.
Also, The official who made the call, Tony Greene, is going to become a household name when he refs from now on, for that call and he has a past history of making bad calls in other games.
duke got the calls all night. grant was mugged numerous times while scoring–even jay biased commented—and no call. christmas was asking where the call was on his last basket and parker got the benefit of a block when adinije stood his ground and allowed himself to be steamrolled. boeheim saw all of these all night. his frustration level–like mine–had to on the edge. i think he did it on purpose—and it was a righteous purpose. duke barely won even with the officials ensuring they would. boeheim showed (finally) that he will go to the mat for his guys–the way they do for him night afte night. good for him!

boeheim was correct that was a horrid call by the ref.it almost seemed as if the ref set this one for duke.
Marty please…the blocked shot on Hood at the dome was a great call as the ball was swatted away by Christmas and then HOOD initiated the contact by bringing his arm down on Christmas’s to dunk with what was now an EMPTY HAND- the ball was gone.

Yesterday I made the remark about “Cameron cooking”… CUSE “committed 5 more fouls than Duke…DUKE went to the line I think 11 more times…compare the Parker Gbinije block call vs CJ’s charge… Grant fouled out and Keita/Christmas had 4 fouls each…
Cuse players were getting bumped/pushed on drives all night…refs knew what they were doing….nothing new here. This is how a 31 game home win streak is constructed.
Having said all this…CUSE showed me something last night..they were more competitive. IF Cooney can get his head out of his a55 and JB can keep his jacket on…CUSE WILL GO TO THE FINAL 4!
When I was an active basketball official,they always told us in class that,if it was a close game don’t ever make a call that puts you in the spot light and takes the game away from the players. Let the players win or lose the game.
If the call against CJ Fair were reversed and the basket counted and a plus one would have won the game for the Cuse.
John Swafford should do an investigation into this matter and force a few of his officials into retirement. When events like this happens and is caused by an offical,it ends up giving the league a black eye. And I thought the football officiating was bad. Wow!!!!!
One other thing people that you all need to remember. People that live in the South haven’t gotten over the the North winning the war yet. BC,Pittsburgh and Syracuse are all from the North and feel they shouldn’t be in the league. Better get used to this type of crap,it’s only going to get worse the longer the northern teams are in the league.

In response to Ron, the former basketball official. Syracuse was playing a “northern” team last night.
Yes, I am a southerner. However, I have always had the greatest respect for Coach Boeheim. The ACC has historically been a conference centered in the South, but the times they are a changin’. I realize it all comes down to revenue as the ultimate factor. I am not fond of the realignment, but I am working to accept it. Thankfully the schools that have entered the conference are excellent institutions that will further the advancement of the ACC.
And on a final note, the loss by Syracuse last night was an absolute travesty. Welcome to the ACC, Dook is a bane to everyone’s existence.
I’m not a Syracuse or Boeheim fan by any stretch, but I think he did college basketball a favor with his blow up. If there is any place and any team where the updated rule needed to be applied it is at Duke, where they have a history of flopping for charge calls and where the home crowd has the potential for game-changing influence over officiating. Home court influence has been studied and it is real. Officials are human, but the subjectivity of the basketball charge call is a major turnoff to casual fans and frustration to die-hard fans. This was a pretty obvious non-charge under the updated rule and the ref blew it. I’m glad Boeheim blew up on him.
With all being said , agree with the many comments from both team supporters.

Officials , no matter the sport we see too many QUICK calls. I just wish they would swallow the whistle , delay the call untill they are sure they have it correct.
I understand the crap call ended the game, I wish JB would have kept his cool but I understand his fury as well. The reason we lost was not the call but our guards not being able to score. Ennis and Cooney have shown a downturn as of late and that is the reason we have lost the last 2. A call is a call but a shooting slump can be deadly come the end of the year. When the smoke clears if our guards don’t shoot better we can get every call and still might lose.
Let us not forget when Coach K was the new kid on the block and correctly called out Dean Smith, his Tar Heals, and the ACC for having two sets of rules, one for UNC and one for the rest of the conference. UNC previously was the recipient of all the calls without a doubt. Coach B was making a statement there, can’t blame him. I guess Jim Burr quantum leaped into Tony Greene’s body?
