Eleven SU prospects visited the Hill this past weekend and the Orange reeled in just one commit. But don’t be fooled, as it’ll feel like multiple Treevon Praters are all over the gridiron.
The addition of the versatile CB/S/WR makes it 17 commitments for the Class of 2014 recruiting class.
The visit must have wowed Prater, as he technically flips his “soft verbal” commitment with Western Michigan to join the SU class. Prater was one of many soaking in Syracuse-Pittsburgh hoops at the Dome Saturday. Improvements to the program, specifically new facilities, really open the eyes of recruits once they make their way on campus. ESPN ranks Prater the 45th best player in Illinois. His presence should be immediately felt in the Loud House, as his ability to play several positions gives him the shot to make an impact right away.
Last fall at East Saint Louis High School, Prater saw time mostly in the secondary. As always, the defensive backfield serves as a priority on the recruiting front. The 6’2”, 180-pound Prater provides an extra option at those positions as well as experiences at both cornerback and safety. Scooping up guys who have contributed at both spots really stands out to the coaching staff.  Scott Shafer and DB coach Fred Reed probably have a projected plan for the Illinois native to utilize his strengths. 
On the subject of the hard-nosed Shafer and his Illinois roots, the last two recruits to pledge Orange that hail from the Prairie State. Prater and DE Chris Slayton back up Syracuse’s strong ties with Illinois. Shafer’s invaluable connections strike again, but what can’t be forgotten is the rest of the staff helps keeps these ties tight. Orange defensive line coach Tim Daoust coached a secondary back in 2007 until 2009 with what team? Those West Michigan Broncos.
Interesting to hear if Daoust chipped in on the effort to land the athletic Prater. Regardless, you have to love the framework Shafer continues to lay with the state and that’s only moving forward.
It doesn’t look like the Orange has to hit panic time this winter season. Last year Syracuse scrambled desperately to put together its 2013 class after Doug Marrone left for the Buffalo Bills. The pressure on Shafer and George McDonaldhas dropped immensely this recruiting season now 17 guys currently on board. Rivals awarded SU the 74th rank for the class a year ago. Shafer slowly but surely is making progress: two weeks from National Signing Day, the program currently sits at 62nd.

His numbers easily back his handle title up. Prater recorded 76 total tackles and racked up seven interceptions. On top of that, he accumulated an average of 31 yards off each INT. Throw in two sacks as well during his senior stint. Offensively, Prater caught four touchdowns and tallied over 300 yards receiving.
Prater’s undoubtedly a widely, diverse athlete that intends to make his presence known at Syracuse quickly. Don’t blink twice, as at times you’ll feel like there’s more than one Treevon Prater out on the field. BOOM#5 goes the dynamite.

Eleven recruits on campus over the weekend,wow,wow,WOW!!!!!! Syracuse is going to have another big weekend with more recruits coming to campus Feb. 1st and 2nd. Hoping we pick up another 10-15 recruits from all that’s visited.
Welcome to the Orangenation Treevon,if you enjoyed the Syr/Pitt game on Saturday with the people going crazy,you haven’t seen anything yet. Wait until you play in front of 40-45K screaming fans supporting the football team that your about to join.
Remember now we have the 2013 national champions FSU coming to the loud house for a must see game this fall making for an interesting Saturday afternoon.

i really like the idea of getting players from illinois area and hope it will continue. i am a season ticket holder and i constantly scream at the home games. when this place has 45,000 fans screaming like me it will sound like 100,000 fans. don’t let the dome fool you, it can be a dangerous place to play for opposing teams. i for one really love my su football and the acc conference.
Nice to beat out Illinois and the B1G for this rangy framed kid! We need some taller dbs to compete against teams like FSU and Clemson. Who were the other 10 kids who visited? Fizz never mentioned them b4 the official visits last weekend?

Nothing against Mr.Prater personally, but should we really celebrate getting the 45th best recruit in Illinois away from Western Michigan. Hopefully there will come a day when we get the 5th best recruit from somewhere away from Michigan or Ohio State. Then we should celebrate. That said, welcome Mr Prater. I hope you become an All-American.

Yes Russ I’m happy with this verbal!! Where ya been??? But still concerned with his state rank. After all Illinois is no FL, TX or Cal either!! But being a 3 star is much better than a NR/2 star hope and pray!! I hope others will be coming in shortly!! HCSS has to deal with his lack of depth too!!
2 players from the NYC/LI areas that made NYS Class AA all state and are juniors this year. Eric Favors from North Rockland and Jonathan Forrest from New Rochelle!! I always like to see what underclassmen make All State HSFB for NYS!! Mainly because usually seniors are the major picks. But if a JR or SO(Rochester QB for Example)are chosen 1st team they got to have caught the right eyes of the state officials. What was interesting was that some of the hard fought players from NYS that SU lost out on ended up 2nd team. VERY INTERESTING HUH!! So for just the hell of it I’ll watch these two juniors and see what happens!!
Do Not Forget The kids of PSABUSEDU!! THE NCAA DID!!
No reason to panic here. It would have been nice to get Ishmael or one of the lineman to commit quickly, but they have to go where they think they will best fit in. Maybe this is a Jason Cabinda situation where they are waiting for an offer from someone else. You never know.
Denzel Ward said(via twitter) 50/50 between SU and South Florida. Both Shafer and SF’s coach are making an in-home visit tomorrow so we should know soon.
Talked with some of the football players tonight that were involved with the recruits over the weekend.
They all said that all of the recruits loved Syracuse and had a great time taking in the game and hanging with the players all during their stay. Out of the 11 recruits that were on campus 5 of them have already committed to the Cuse,the remaining 6 recruits,one has already committed leaving only 5 that are still uncommitted. One player told me tonight that he thought all of the players still uncommitted would commit to us. That would be great if that happened.
Don’t gorget now,we have another big recruiting weekend coming at the end of the month. Should make all of us happy,happy,happy.
In short gentlemen,it was another one of those days,talking to a lot of the players, that just makes an old man like me extremely happy.
Well the second of 5 recruits that were on campus over the weekend committed to the Orange on Monday.
3* 5″9″ 170 lb CB Juwan Dowels gave us a verbal. Must have liked his visit.
The kid must be good Terry,Oklahoma,Rutgers,Clemson and Texas A&M were just a few of the schools that were interested in getting him to commit to their schools.

Ron, based on what I am reading, I agree with assesment that we may get 5 of the 6 non-committed recruits. I feel good about Ward. I like Rodney, but he’s visiting Wake, which is close to home. That may be an issue in securing his signature. Ishmael is taking visits, and that’s tough to see, but from what I hear, he’s as solid as there is in leaning our way. The last kid (I think his name is Kyron Watson)is an LB that is committed to Kansas. I think he’s getting action from Nebraska as well. He may be tough to sway away from his home area. He and Prater are HS teammates.
Terry, I don’t know the players you referenced, but that is downstate territory. Russ and I (and Ron) have been pushing for better recruiting in the NJ/NYC/LI area. These schools would qualify as they are both within 15 miles of NYC, along with many of the better Catholic HS in NJ like St. Joe’s, Bosco, Bergen or Paramus Catholic. I have no problems with our lack of success in NYC if its because we are focusing our efforts in northern NJ and Rockland County NY.
Of note for Dowels is that apparently Oklahoma LOVED him and one of his current coaches is a former FSU D-back and also LOVES him. He is an agressive speedster with quickness and “explosiveness”. Rumor is his coaches match him up on the opposition’s best even if he’s a 6’3″ 4 star. Also of note when reading this, he plays opposite a 4 star corner, and he’s the go to shut down guy.
Ron still concerned about the height issue with these players. One is 5’9″ that’s not good in todays game. FSU won the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP by having a tall WR catch the winning pass over a real shorter DB!! But both seem to have the talent, but lack the bodies. Still a decent 3 star is better than a NR/2 star hope and pray like we’ve seen in the past classes!!
Malone-I really don’t know if these NYC/LI kids are talented????? Its just as hobby of mine to watch certain players grow. These two + the Rochester SO QB(SU will never get him) are on my radar. But at the same time 2 players I thought would be 1st team AA didn’t make it. The Cassius(Buffalo) RB that went PSABUSEDU and the DE(father’s coach at Bills)are both 2nd team!! Kinda funny huh!! Malone do not forget the Long Island area, but I’m starting to agree with you on NYC!! LI and NYC are two different worlds in HS sports!!
I feel a player like Watson is a must get!! SU’s LB’s lately have played great but are undersized. Where’s the beef???

I believe that the best is still to come for Coach Shafer and the Cuse. @Malone mentioned the recruits that we’re after in NJ. I believe that we’re after 15-20 recruits that play for a lot of the power house programs,Bergen Catholic,Don Bosco,Paramus Catholic HS’s to name a few.
I know your going to think I’m crazy,but I still have a feeling that Jason Cabinda might change his mind and come back to Syracuse.
The players that I was talking too the other night were all excited about the recruits that came in over the weekend. They couldn’t say enough good thing’s when dscribing them.
Terry,how ever there is one thing that we all complained about and discussed in detail last year. Have you noticed that Shafer hasn’t brought in any JUCO players this year yet.
I know that you clamour for a 25-35 national class ranking. If we get some of those recruits out of Jersey,add them to this years class along with the current members of the team,Terry I’m telling you now,Syracuse will be in the range that we all are wishing for. I believe that things are looking that good for the Cuse. I know that’s the homer coming out of me.

Ron, Check out my post on the Washington story. We will have a good idea on Watson come Friday. I think Ward is in, as well as Ishmael, but i hear Louisville is putting on a good push for him. Wilbon is a dark horse, but I heard a rumor that we will get a visit 1/31. That bodes well.
